Taengea was turned into chaos in the short span of one festival. It rapidly shifted from being joyous to being a time of mourning.
A king and prince dead.
A country thrown into turmoil.
And her family seemed to been the thick of it.
Selene had never seen such destruction, such death, on such a personal level. A hundred or more dead, unspeakable injuries and a new growing fear of the unknown-- it was all very overwhelming for her to comprehend. What helped, more than she realized, were the letters to the Prince of Colchis. While they hadn't seemed like overly personal letters, they were still a piece of sanity, and explanation to the madness, and a welcome reprieve from the horrors they had experienced. And just as suddenly as they brought comfort, they turned formal. And she was sure that any chance of friendship between herself and the heir was gone. She was leaving just in time to avoid the looks of disappointment from her mother.
It had been difficult to convince her father to allow her to go to Athenia in the first place. The letter had been well received, but he didn't like the idea of sending her out without protection. It had taken a few days and the acquisition of 3 new slaves before the plans had been put into place. As much as she longed to stay with her sisters, to mourn as a group, she also felt the urgent desire to go. She needed to remember that the world wasn't built on the horrors of the races. And she needed to forget about the lost friendship with the prince.
Standing on the deck of the royal ship, after a few days at sea, she was anxious to disembark. Her first day on the boat had been filled with seasickness, taking far longer to find her sea legs than she had expected. Now, there was a bit of pleasure in the travel. Nothing like horseback, but that wasn't a bad thing either. She was growing fond of the slave she had chosen for herself, a sweet young teen who went by the name of Jo. The story into servitude was a sad one, her parents death causing her to become an orphan who needed to pay off her parent's debtors. Selene had taken pity on her during the auction, and the journey across the sea had made them friends. The other two were burly men, in the service of her father who placed them in the charge of the 2 additional guards who were to be at her side at all times. The Leventi girl thought it was overkill, but she couldn't deny that it brought her comfort as well.
The docks of Athenia came into view, and the two girls turned into excited fiends, ready to bolt as soon as the ship was tied off. She had to be patient, had to relax so that the men could do their work. Her eyes darted among the crowds, just as excited to see Emilia as she was to be in a brand new country. The royal carriage was not hard to spot, but Jo gently reminded her that it was best to wait until the Princess came to them, not to rush to her side like a child.
So she waited. But it did not stop the bouncing of her heels, her excitement uncontainable.
There was far too much to see and do to stay on the ship longer than she had to.

After a whole 3 weeks of being back in Athenia, Emilia was fnally feeling more like herself - more capable of handling visitors as true to the Athenian spirit, that is. The trip back from Taengea had taken a week, and the following week Emilia had spent just with her sister and reminding herself of how grateful she was to even be alive, at home and with the few people she had to call her family. Bouncing in between spending time with her ailing father, and even occasionally sneaking into Persephone's room at night to curl up next to her sister when her nightmares had woken her up and rendered her unable to fall back to sleep.
Her missive to the Lady Selene had been sent that following week, when her hands no longer shook everytime she was left alone for longer then five minutes, and she managed to pen out a decent letter to be sent to the Taengean noble family, to make official her invite to her newly minted friend for a visit to her lands. The response that Emilia had received the week later had launched the young princess into a full blown preparation mode to receive her guest.
Not wanting to bother Persephone with the smaller details, as Emilia knew her sister was preoccupied with the Senate meeting regarding the new bill that was to be passed, Emilia had personally seen to he preparation of the room that the Lady Selene was to be placed in for the duration of her visit, as well as the gifts she intended to present to the Lady, all Athenian made and locally sourced.
Informing her guards to get the coastal guards to send her a signal upon first sighting of the royal vessal Emilia had sent out to pick the Leventi sister up, when the news arrived to Emilia at breakfast that morning, the Xanthos princess quickly finished her meal, before setting her plans in motion. Her lady's maids immediately pulled out the new chiton Emilia had instructed be made for just the occasion.
In her room, Helen first draped the sea-green silk chiton on her body as the first layer, winding it so the layers fell beautifull around her legs, before a second layer was wound around her body. The top layer was of a pale yellow chiffon, see through to show the beautiful silken pattern of her bottom chiton, yet providing just enough contrast of colors to enhance the beautifully tanned skin that both Emilia and her sister posessed for being a Xanthos. As a final touch, Helen pinned the brooch of an swan, her house sigil on her shoulder to secure both layers over her left shoulder.
Letting her lady's maid set her naturally wavy brunette curls, Helen brought her gold wrought ivy-leaf crown embedded with emeralds that matched her chiton, placing it gingerly on her perfectly coiffured hair, before her trusted maid held out an arm for Emilia to steady herself as she slipped into her golden weave sandals.
Eschewing with Nicholai as he had taken his break, Emilia instead headed out with her retinue of three guards and three maids by her side, seated in the royal carriage that was pulled by two fine white horses, the finest in the land. The carriage itself was a fine one - a covered vehicle in royal pale blue, gilded with golden patterns of ivy leaves and textile patterns, with the Xanthos sigil of the swan carved right into the ornate door. The roof was in black, and a royal crown denoted the status of the person within the carriage. Emilia had drawn the curtains once she had settled into the plush seats, looking out eagerly until they arrived at the cobbled streets of the docklands, where the carriage stopped right where the newly made wooden docks started, a new addition after the storm had decimated their previous ones.
Opening the door, Emilia was handed down by her guards, and upon looking up, a smile broke across her lips when she saw the familiar face of Lady Selene of Leventi, a friend she had made in Taengean soil. She had extended the invitation to visit out of a kind heart, for Emilia could see the wish to travel out of her home kingdom, and figured this was the least she could do for someone who offered her the hospitality of her house when Emilia had been terrified after what had happened at the races.
With quick steps, Emilia made her way to the blonde noble, her smile never leaving her lips until she was close enough to speak. While in rank, Emilia far outstripped the lady as a princess, yet her respect and manners denoted her to give a small bow of her head as she greeted Lady Selene. "Welcome to Athenia, Lady Selene of Leventi. I hope that the voyage here had the blessings of both Zephyrus and Poseidon." While the young princess had been cheerful and informal in Taengea, it was obvious now that she has had the full upbringing of a royal, from the way she held herself to the way she was dressed. Yet despite all of it, a warmth bubbled in her gaze as she awaited for the Lady Selene to fall in step next to her as she guided her guest back to the carriage. "I have much planned for your weeklong visit, but for now I figure I should allow you to rest from your voyage?"

There was something about a bustling port that always seemed to enrapture Selene's attention. Everyone had their own concerns, had their own focus and desires. People shouting and screaming at one another, buying and selling. Money passing hands. Animals being pulled from ships, loaded onto more. There was always a sense of excitement in the air. And it was always easy to get pulled into the joyous atmosphere. She wanted to look at everything and nothing, wanted to know it all and still wonder. Her wait for the Princess to come for her was not long, nor was it boring. In fact, she was almost distracted too much to miss it arriving.
She turned into a giggly young filly as she disembarked from the ship at the sight of horses. Selene was quick to make her way down the bottom of the gangplank, it was hard not to notice the large amount of eyes focused on the two. The Eldest Leventi was used to the stares as her looks were uncommonly fetching, and now seeing their Princess with an incredibly lovely older woman certainly would cause gossip. Her chiton was the fine material she had purchased that day with her sisters, and she had spent hours further decorating it with lovely gold and white thread around the trim. Her hair was pinned, as it had been the majority of her journey.
The Princess's small bow was met with a deep one of her own. As much as she wished to embrace the girl, she knew that she was a Princess. A more affectionate greeting could be had once they were in a more private situation. "I am most grateful for your invitation, Princess Emilia. And am humbled by the lengths you went to ensure the most comfortable of journeys. The Gods blessed us with a smooth sea and fine weather." She followed the girl as was indicated, knowing that her own security and slave would follow quickly behind. "I have done little but rest, your highness, as there is very little of a lady of my status to do on a ship but rest and look at the water. Although I must admit, Titos, one of my father's slaves, showed me how to fish. That was certainly an adventure of its own."
As the approached the carriage, Selene stepped back to allow the Princess into it first before she allowed herself to be handed up into it. It was far finer than the one she had used in Taengea, and it was just as comfortable. She took her seat and adjusted her skirts. Her smile was bright and she took the moment of privacy to reach across and grasp the princess's hands in her own. "I am most excited for your plans, Princess. It will certainly be a fun adventure! Was your sister put off with the idea of company?" She asked gently, wondering if she had a hard time persuading the Crowned Princess to allow her to visit.

Was your sister put off with the idea of company?" She asked gently, wondering if she had a hard time persuading the Crowned Princess to allow her to visit.
The Lady Selene was a finely bred lady - any blind one could see that. The Lady Evelli, as Emilia has heard during her weeklong stint in Taengea, went to great lengths to ensure their four daughters were met with great matches, and the princess easily noticed the ways in which the Leventi matriach has went about ensuring such a thing. Despite so though, the blonde lady's beauty was a natural thing, as was her naturally compassionate disposition, as Emilia had been a recipient of during the horrors that had happened during the end of the festival.
A small amused smile reached her lips, seeing the truth of Selene's words. "I see you take to the sea well. I can't say the same of certain others that I know of. Did you manage to catch anything of note? Perhaps this Titos of yours could teach us as well? I was considering a trip to Arcana, my sister's barony, and their waters have an abundance of fishing and shellfish that are apparently quite delicious." she murmured, settling into the plush seats of her carriage.
Once Lady Selene had gotten comfortable as well, Emilia did a quick rap on the roof of her carriage, an efficient signal that showed when the carriage immediately lurched into motion, the clip-clop of the horses hooves in equal synchronization as they started moving down the streets of Athenia.
When the privacy afforded them the ease to, Emilia smiled as she returned the grasp with one of her own, shaking her head. Her curls bounced along with the movement of her head, as she responded to the other's question, "Of course not. My sister is delighted to have you, but she apologizes for not being around much, as she has much to do in the Senate."
Looking out, Emilia gestured out for Selene to look. Compared to the vast meadows and beautiful fields of Taengea, the scenery that Athenia provided was vastly different indeed. Situated on the cliffside, everywhere you look, the beautiful emerald sight of the Aegean Sea greeted them, and the joy of Athenians showed on their faces as the carriage rolled down the Agora, where people immediately stopped their actions to bow and greet the princess, who naturally waved back with a sweet-natured smile, every bit the educated hostess that her background dictated her to be.
Turning to Selene, Emilia gestured her forward as well, bending back to allow her to peer out the window of the royal carriage, so her people could greet her guest. "It is late in the afternoon now, so I was thinking we could visit the Naos of the Gods first, before we venture out to the city tonight." Pausing, she thought for a while, before following up. "I do hope all is well with Taengea now, after the... events that had occurred during the festival?" Emilia tentatively asked. She had not taken the events well, and while she did not want to bring up the images in her mind again, she had to ask to ensure herself of the wellbeing of her hostess and friend while she had been there.
As the carriage left the main Agora, the large wheels took a corner and it didn't take long before the vehicle was rumbling along the long entrance to the Xanthos's Royal Palati. As the carriage rolled to a stop at the first entrance, Emilia nodded at the guards there, who quickly allowed her entrance, and soon the impressive structure that was the Royal Palati in Athenia loomed into view, a luxurious construction that left little else to be desired. To Emilia however, it was just home, and her eyes twinkled at Selene as she brought up more of her plans. "Tomorrow, we head to Corinth, the fairytale province of Athenia. It's about half a day's carriage ride away. I think you will enjoy it there."

She had enjoyed the ship, but after exploring every nook and cranny, Selene was beyond pleased to finally be on solid ground. The rock of the carriage was far different than the ship, but it was just as soothing and pleasant. Her eyes were torn between focusing on the princess and sneaking a peak out the windows to get a better look at the city. Everything was beautiful and very different from her own home. She wondered if Jo, perched up with the driver, found it as appealing as she did. The girl was bright and bubbly, part of the reason Selene had been so quick to purchase her. That and her education level-- her parents had been merchants and even though they hadn't been good with month, they had certainly made sure that the girl may have made a decent match.
It was unfortunate that they didn't live long enough to see to it.
Perhaps Selene would free the girl, make sure she was well set before doing so. From what she had learned of the girl so far, it was easy to see that this was a sad lot that she had drawn. Even though she was owned, she felt the desire to protect her, and see that she was safe in the end. Her attention shifted back to the princess, smiling brightly. "I would be honored by the chance to meet your sister, however I understand that she has a busy schedule." She was starting to question what a woman's role in life was, starting with Vangelis' description of his mother and father's relationship. Now, hearing that the heir of Athenia was a part of the Senate and was active in the political scheme of the place... perhaps her mother had grossly underestimated what a woman could do.
Selene enjoyed the look from others, nodding her head to those who acknowledged her. She wondered if she would be the talk of the town here, or just another face in the crowd. "I would love to see the Naos. I have not had a proper chance to pray since leaving, and I feel like I own the gods my thanks for making my journey so pleasant and the company so perfect." Her mood sobered a bit, at the mention of Taengea. She was not among the political minds, but her father did speak with her about what was going on. "There is a calm before the storm, it would seem. The city is still picking up the peaces, and there is much unrest among those most vulnerable to their fanatics. To be frank, my father almost did not let me leave, simply because he did not like the idea of not being able to protect me directly. If he did not have 4 other daughters to protect, I believe he would have found a reason to come along. I was only able to convince him to allow me the journey with the acquisition of 2 new slave guards and a slave of my own."
There was a relief to feel safe, which was odd. She was on foreign soil-- she should not have felt more safe here than in her own home. But after what had happened in the circus and the destruction in the streets afterwards, it was not safe to be a Leventi in Taengea. She shook her head, smiling brightly. "I do hope you have since recovered as well. I am here to help put my mind at ease and to put aside the horrors for a while. To explore a new land with my dearest new friend. I would hope there are horses in Corinth, for it has been far too long since I've been on a steed and I long to ride." She confessed, her excitement in the travel a bit overwhelming. She knew she should be proper, should gather her thoughts, but in the safety of the carriage with her young friend, she felt safe to show just how much she had been looking forward to the trip. "I fear Jo is nervous about this, for her training did not include how to be a hand to a mistress. I may send her off to unload out things if we should meet your sister. I do not think her constitution is quite ready, even if she is just supposed to stand in the back meekly."
Her blonde curls bounced as she shook her head. "But never mind that, I wish to hear of your journey home, and how things have been since I've last seen you."

If there was anyone in her life she held in highest regard, it would be her sister. There was no one Emilia was more proud and more respectful of, and as long as it was Persephone, she would follow, even if her decisions occasionally irked the younger Xanthos. "She does, indeed. But Senate has been quiet lately, plus she's been spending more time with me since I returned from Taengea." she replied, smiling when her people openly welcomed Selene to Athenia, as was normal for her hospitable people.
"We must. The Naos of Gods is a place everyone would take a stop at when they visit Athenia." Emilia reinforced, perking up when Selene began giving updates to what had been happening in Taengea ever since Emilia had left the kingdom in haste. "I assure you the highest protection while you're here, and I would be happy to send a missive to Lord Georgios to ensure your safety, should he need one." the princess promised.
Nodding as the Lady asked on her wellbeing, Emilia only gave the half-truth in her response. "I have been well. Nicholai got me home as swiftly as he could, and being home with my sister and father has helped greatly." she murmured, a small smile that hid the still wary look in her eyes at any mention of the events that had transpired at the chariots. In truth, Emilia was still twitchy when she thought of being alone, and disliked the idea of even leaving her father for long periods of time alone now. The events in Taengea had definitely scarred the young girl, but she was well versed in hiding it.
Smiling at the Lady Selene's obvious delight at being here, she replied, "Our horseflesh is nowhere as fine as the ones produced by your kingdom, but we have the best of Athenia's in our royal stables. Perhaps we can take a ride to the Naos, instead of another carriage ride? The fresh air could be welcome after a long voyage." A thoughtful look crossed Emilia's face when Selene mentioned her young slave's lack of training. "Perhaps Jo would like to spend some time with Helen? My lady's maid is... harsh, but a very good maiden to help. She may learn much, but she'll have to deal with Helen's sharp tongue."
The princess paused at the blonde's concerned question. Emilia's occasional nightmares still popped up, but she let it slide, and instead had a bright smile on her face, peering out again as she replied. "Things have been quiet in Athenia, what with the Senate in preparation to review the new bill my father has proposed to pass. We have a festival coming up in which I've been helping my sister prepare for, in between spending time with King Minas. Otherwise, it's been... fairly quiet." By the time she finished, the carriage rumbled to a stop, and within a few seconds, the door to their carriage was opened by a footmen, who bowed and offered a hand out to Emilia.
Taking the proffered hand, Emilia stepped down, and then waited for Selene to descend, before she used her arm to gesture at the Royal Palati they had arrived at, a welcoming smile. "This is my home, the Athenian royal palati. I'll have my servants bring your items? Come, let me show you to your rooms."
Waving at Helen with pre-given instructions that the maiden was supposed to carry out, it was fascinating to watch how everyone fell into clockwork at the instructions Emilia had pre-given, something the young princess had learned from many years to be how a well-oiled Queen and noble. Many who thought that being a noble and a royal was only to sit and enjoy life... well, let's just say Emilia will vehemently deny that their lives as royal figures was easy.
Ascending the marble steps, the well wrought door opened to the foyer, and Emilia led Selene up a flight of circular stairwell, up to the second floor, where she went down a hallway, and then smiled as she stopped at a door third from the stairwell, situated on her right. "My room is a floor above, but if you ever need me, just ask for a handmaiden to get to me. This will be your rooms for the duration of your stay." The door would open to reveal a large four poster bed, with a canopy hanging upon the four posts, and a wooden chest situated right at the foot of the bed. The sheets of the bed were of the highest quality fabric, and by the large window that revealed the view of a glittering Aegean Sea, a dark blue couch was underneath it. The sheer curtains fluttered in the light breeze that came in through the opened, gold gilded windows. "Please do freshen up before you come down, Lady Selene. I will ask the stables to ready two of our finest horses for our ride to the Naos."

Persephone had had a long day and the last thing she wanted to do right now was to put on a nice face and play hostess to a guest she knew nothing about. That, however, was not the case when it came to the Lady Selene. Emilia had been insistent on inviting the woman to come to Athenia for a time - especially given the festival they were due to have in a few days. Not that Persephone had needed a lot of convincing. She was happy for any new acquaintances that Emilia was making that were with the genteel and elegant ladies of court. Perhaps the girl would learn the finer points of etiquette that Persephone simply no longer had the time to teach her sister - a failure as one of her guardians that Persephone felt keenly and with a strong sense of guilt.
From the tales and stories of the Lady Selene - plus the young woman's reputation that had preceded the princess's personal accounts of her - Persephone was happy to have the woman in Athenia and even a little eager to meet her herself.
As such, despite the tiredness that seemed to ache in her very bones, Persephone was noting of the time as she finished with her scribes for the afternoon and, with several volumes of work left on her desk for the evening, she headed out into the palace, an assigned guard and a handmaiden in tow.
Heading out of her private chambers, down a series of steps and towards the front of the building where the foyer led up to the guest rooms, she was in time to see her sister standing in the doorway of one of the guest suites clearly talking to someone inside.
With her feet in the doorway and her hand on the frame, Emilia was lent into the room with her rear end poking outward and her dark curls disappearing into the room. It was clear that she had been talking to her friend as she was leaving, and had refused to stop talking as her feet carried her out, creating an unladylike final position.
Persephone said nothing.
She simply cleared her throat.

Selene was pleasantly surprised how well she was being received. It wasn't that she thought that she shouldn't have been. But she certainly had not expected fanfare and attention. Emilia was a princess, and while they had bonded after the races, the woman didn't think that Emilia would have time for her. Perhaps hand her off to someone else. But she couldn't deny her excitement over the week. It was going to help her forget her woes and her stress. She could focus on seeing as much as she could, and not about home or Vangelis. And perhaps, when she returned home, she would have a letter from him. And then, she could share everything she had seen.
But she had to see it all first.
She shook her head, "I do not think he will require such a message. I think he is more just overly worried. The events of the past weeks have caused him overly worried about his daughters. He would prefer to keep us under lock and key at home. 'I cannot well protect you across the seas, Selene.'" Her voice tried to take his deep tone, but she let out a giggle at the end. "He means well. I shall write to him and convey your message to him. He will be honored that you care so deeply for his eldest's daughters wellbeing." And she grasped her hand tightly, "And my father wouldn't dare insult your hospitality by suggesting otherwise."
Her feet itched with excitement, wanting nothing more than to release her pent-up energy with a brisk ride. "I am sure your horses have some Taengea bred into them. It will be nice to see for myself if our horses really are the best, or if it is just a boast of prideful men." She grinned, glad for the suggestion for Jo. "I think she would like that. The girl grew up without a mother and recently lost her father. Anyone to give her some structure would be well appreciated. I don't think she knows what's expected of her, and we haven't had time to work on it." She couldn't leave her behind, and together on the boat, they had become more like friends. But now, in the capital, she would need to know her place.
Every palace was finely made, and this one was no different. Selene was excited for a chance to explore the open spaces, to take in architecture and paintings. She was sure she could get lost in the beauty of it all, quietly wondering if there was a music room for which she could play. She carefully listened to the instructions of the princess, taking a mental note of the locations she mentioned. As she made her way into her quarters, she beamed a bit, pleased to see just how beautiful they were. She certainly felt like a princess herself, the rooms far nicer than her own at home. Selene was taking in the room when she noticed a visitor at the door.
Her cheeks flushed, lightly tossing her head to Emilia so she might notice her sister at door. The blonde dropped into a deep curtsy, "Princess Persephone. I am Selene of Leventi and I must thank you for allowing me the absolute honor in visiting your beautiful home. Your sister has been a most gracious hostess." She straightened out her chiton, beaming between the sisters. "I am most excited to see your beautiful kingdom."

The idea that the Athenian royal stables would like have fine Taengean horse blood in them would probably not surprise Emilia had she been into horseflesh, as the finest horses came from the kingdom which she had just left. However as the princess held little interest in horses and even less in horseflesh, she merely nodded in a non-comittal manner at Selene's comment, and waved Helen over with quick instructions to take the Lady Selene's handmaiden under her wing for the duration of Selene's visit, to ensure the young slave girl could learn the proper ways and etiquette to serve her lady.
Entirely focused on Selene as she introduced her room and the amenities available within the lavish palaces of the Athenian royal family at her disposal, Emilia did not notice anything until the blonde Taengean flushed, a shade that easily showed up on her pale cheeks, and instinct made her turn.
Only to almost stumble when she caught sight of her elder sister.
Don't get her wrong, Emilia loved her sister dearly. Both the Xanthos girls had, for most of their lives, only each other to rely on, and were likely closer then your average royal siblings. Emilia would put her neck on the line for her sister - but that didn't mean she was anywhere near as graceful and poised as her sister usually was. It was no secret that the difference between the two Xanthos sisters were vast, the elder being as graceful and poised as a goddess, and the other... with much to learn.
"Sissy!" was her first reaction, before her mind kicked in and reminded her of who she was with, and Emilia gave Lady Selene a look, before quickly correcting herself, picking up her skirts to give a small curtsy. "Persephone, what brings you here?" Emilia asked in a more sedate, gentle tone, subconsciously rearranging her posture to reflect more of her elder sister's. "Did you not have a lot to prepare for the Senate meeting?" asked the younger one, obvious concern for her elder sister when she saw the weary way in which Persephone held herself.

"Did you not have a lot to prepare for the Senate meeting?" asked the younger one, obvious concern for her elder sister when she saw the weary way in which Persephone held herself.
Persephone's mouth curled into a small but warm smile as she watched the two very different reactions of the women in the room, amused that her appearance had triggered such prompt behaviour.
Knowing that her sister would not be offended to come second in her attentions in defection of her friend, Persephone turned first to the newcomer...
As the blonde woman curtsied in a most graceful manner and at a depth that even the proudest emperor couldn't take offence at, Persephone nodded her head respectfully back, her expression turning friendly and - she hoped - welcoming.
"You are most welcome Lady Selene." She told the woman. "Your acceptance of our invitation has brought much joy to my sister and sent the kitchens scurrying to learn more Taengean recipes. I believe your visit brings an excitement to our chefs that they are excited by. Though I assure you I have insisted to the most traditional Athenian dishes to be prepared during your stay also. I hope you confirm to my own thinking that experiencing the native cuisine and culture of a new place is one of the greatest enjoyments when travelling."
Not that Persephone had ever done much. As the eldest child of the Xanthos House, regardless of any other potential rank or responsibilities, combined with the fact that she was female, Persephone had never left Athenia. But her words were true enough to her opinions were she ever to do so.
"Speaking of which, I had hoped that you should join us for the evening repast after sundown." She told the Lady Selene before turning to Emilia. "I have my work to do sister mine, but never too much to spend a meal with you. If you are headed for the Naos I shall meet you in the dining room at an hour past sunset Emilia..."
As Persephone bowed her head respectfully, clearly intent on leaving the girls to their excitement and chatter, she gave a final directive. "Take Nicholai with you, Emilia. I expect no less than six guards in your party if you are to ride... I shall send a missive ahead to the Naos for them to expect you within the hour."
And then the young heir to the throne left the ladies to their own devices.
Part of her - the young and girlish part that Persephone was highly unfamiliar with at this point - wanted to join them in their excursion, to meet the Lady Selene properly and perhaps turn an acquaintance into a friendship. The woman was seven years older than herself - Persephone had checked the heritage of the woman in the nobility ledgers in the university library before she had allowed the invitation - and could have perhaps offered advice or experience from dealing with the courts. Not that Persephone felt she needed advice when she had been running the Athenian court since the age of twelve. But it was always an interest of hers to learn more, adapt styles and develop a greater understanding of the different peoples of Greece.
And yet, nothing much of this registered in her mind in that moment. Too practised at being a princess first and Persephone second, she was slow to register the missed opportunities to herself as an individual.
At least she would be able to talk to the woman some more at dinner...

There was an elegance to the elder princess that Selene was drawn to. She was almost certain that they would have gotten along, were they to become friends. And she truly hoped that they would be. Her sisters were so different from her, all in different ways. It would be nice to be able to talk to someone who was an older sister, who understood the pressures of being an example. And, perhaps, be able to learn the obvious strengths that the eldest Xanthos had.
If her people were considering changing the law to make her Queen, then she must have been worthy of it.
She let out a laugh, "It will be nice to have a touch of home, but I'm looking forward to trying the food here. To be frank, I think that as long as the floor does not shift during dinner, I will enjoy it immensely!" She had been so new to traveling that it had taken her a few meals to get used to the gentle sway of the room as they ate anything. And she was sure that Emilia would know what she was talking about. "I'm excited to see all the difference between our kingdoms. My father insisted on a bringing two most casks of wine for you, as a token of his appreciation for the hospitality."
Selene beamed, unable to hide her pleasure in the chance to dine with the girls. "That would be splendid. I have many questions, and I hope for the chance to bombard you with them." Bowing her head, the Leventi girl tried to gather her excitement. "I will make a note to pray for a fast sunset, so that we may all enjoy a break from our stressors to partake in good food, abundant wine, and pleasant company." She let the sisters have their moment, focusing on the view from her room to that the instructions could be passed along.
As soon as Persephone left them, Selene returned back to her hostess's side. "I shall make haste in freshening up, so that we may be off!" She gave the princess a bow, then a soft giggle as Jo joined them once more, bustling around the room to put things in their place for the week.
But she was already sure that a week would not be long enough.

Emilia merely watched quietly at the exchange between her sister and newfound friend, noting the deep curtsey that the blonde lady from Taengea offered her sister. Emilia was no surprise - stories of her sisters daring clash with the Senate would definitely be rife in other courts in other kingdoms by now. Afterall, it had never been done before in the history of Greece. Emilia herself was fully convinced that Persephone would emerge successful, but she did not want to jinx it.
Smiling when Persephone brought up the kitchen, Emilia could already imagine the delicious scent of the Arcanian fish stew being prepared - a dish the young princess absolutely adored everytime she followed Persephone to visit her barony. The feast tonight was promising, if she were to judge by the elder's words anyway.
When Persephone addressed her, Emilia smiled sweetly, as she always did at the affectionate way her sister referred to her. There was no doubt in any's mind regarding the affections between the two sisters, and the girl chuckled when the elder one directed - not suggested - directed her to bring her guard, a move she was not surprised with. Persephone had been extra alert with her safety ever since her return with Taengea, and honestly, Nicholai was not much different.
Nodding as her sister left, Emilia turned to Selene, hiding a small, amused smile at how excited Selene looked to have met who may have been the next Queen of Athenia. Nodding in excitement, she waved at her handmaidens who stood waiting right at the entrance with an array of bathing salts and fragrant oils she had specially prepared, along with a large tub and what was sure to be hot water following behind. "I have had a hot bath prepared ahead of time for you, Lady Selene. Please, do take your time with it. Once you are ready, inform one of the handmaidens and they will tell me of your return." the young princess turned to her head lady's maid, who stepped up. "Helen, please do assist Lady Selene in her ablutions, and see to it that her lady's maid learns all she can. I will get Dawn to help me, and I'll send word for Nicholai to be ready for us in the foyer with our horses."
Returning her gaze to Selene, Emilia dipped into a light curtsy as a means of signalling her departure, before exiting the room, fully intending to straighten up herself before they made their way to the Naos.
