Her nights had been restless and her days filled with hushed whispers—as if she could not hear what was being said about her family and about her. Elias had been locked away in their homestead for several days now, his temper fairing poorly at the captivity and Chara was in little mood to soothe the wounded soul of the man today.
Dressed in her finest, she knew that her appearance would be heavily scrutinized. She would need to wrap only the finest linens about her form, her hair would need to be immaculate and she would have to carry herself in a manner that made House Stravos the envy of the Greek world that it was. She only brought a single servant with her, a young maiden who had long since proven herself quite loyal to Chara over the years.
The market was as crowded as ever though Chara noticed that not as many were scurrying to clear her path as before. Annoyed, but willing to forge on, Chara stopped at a stall that was selling hand-crafted jewelry. The glittering jewels sparkled in the Athenian sun as the vendor graciously commented on Chara’s own natural beauty before selecting a few pieces that would only compliment what the gods had already granted her.
Flattery was always nice but the man could grant Chara nothing but trinkets and wasn’t worth even a small chuckle or playful blush. Normally she had the vendors eating from her palm but Chara could not bring herself to such actions, not when a dark cloud held its place so firmly above her.

Agathe’s days had become increasingly interesting due to the recent events in the kingdom. With Persephone set to inherit the throne and House Stravos cast to the wayside, Agathe had found herself catapulted through the ranks to become third in line for the throne. While she had initially not supported her cousin’s challenge to Persephone’s claim, she had to admit that his actions had unanticipated results in her favor.
While Agathe was not one to lord her marginally improved status over others, she had noticeably walked a little taller since the Senate’s vote in Persephone’s favor. She had even taken it upon herself to emulate her mother—or at least how she imagined Sera of Marikas had dressed herself when she was still living in the Royal Paláti—in the event that both of her Xanthos cousins perished in some tragic accident and she became the heir apparent in the wake of her sickly uncle’s imminent death.
She had chosen an uncharacteristically modest gown for her afternoon jaunt to the shops. With brief instructions to her servant, Eudocia, to make herself scarce, but useful, Agathe had set out for the outer circle of Athenia. She anticipated the wary glances in her direction and the hushed conversations that followed. What she had not anticipated was seeing her closest friend and courtly adversary perusing the wares of a jewelry vendor.
The young woman certainly looked the part. Chara had draped herself in her finest garments and had undoubtedly spent a considerable amount of time ensuring her appearance was nothing short of perfect. However, Agathe could tell by the way she regarded the vendor that something was not quite right. Intrigued by her cousin’s apathetic demeanor and driven by her curiosity to learn how House Stravos had been faring since the Senate meet, Agathe approached, hooking Chara’s elbow with her own.
”Lovely cousin, what a pleasant surprise to find you here amongst so many common folk. My heart has been heavy for you and Mother is worried sick for the wellbeing of her sister. Pray tell, how is your family?” Her words were laced with genuine concern as she steered Chara from the vendor, brushing off his irritation with a wave of her manicured hand.

Chara of Stravos
The weight of her brother’s actions had fallen heavily onto Chara’s shoulders. The hushed and secreted discussions of possible redemption mixed with conspiracy and treachery that would see her brother’s death and her off to something far worse. Still, the siblings seemed to both consider demotion far worse than death. Her mind darkened by all the twists and turns they would be required to navigate, she did not even notice her cousin’s appearance until they were hooked at the elbow, as they often were.
“Agathe,” Chara sighed as the vendor was dismissed with a fine wave of an even finer hand, “You have my apologies for not seeking your companionship earlier…”
Chara had always had a way with words, sweet like honey but vulnerable with a despair that would send anyone to the front lines of Hell to console her. Her hand patting the arm of her affectionate kin, she sighed and her shoulders slumped ever so slightly, “Mother is attempting to remain strong but you know how quickly the wolves gather at the doors. There are those still seeking to strike House Stravos while we are down.”
Still, the beauty steadied herself and managed to stand up tall, “But there is enough time for the dark tales I would weave, tell me darling, how have you been fairing? You must still be reeling from the sudden rise of status?”
Chara held no ill will towards her darling cousin. Elias’ actions were his own and the ramifications from them were like ripples in a pond, spreading ever wider.
