It's that time of year everyone, when Aeipathy opens its NaNo doors and offers up our special awards that are only available at this time of year! Some of our members will be challenging themselves to write their own novels, but some of you may be interested in taking on our site challenge! The lunatics among us may be aiming for both!
For those who don't know, NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month and happens every November. It challenges fledgling and veteran writers alike to write roughly 1.5K a day so as to have 50K of their manuscript (the official word count for a 'novel') done by the end of the month. At Aeipathy, we do the same - challenging members to write 50,000 words as their characters across the month of November.
However, if that sounds horrendously impossible to you - don't worry! Our NaNoWriMo is inclusive which means there are stages and levels that you can achieve and aim for! Here's how it all shakes down...
How It Works
From 12:01am November 1st 2021 to 11:59pm November 30th 2021, our NaNoWriMo competition will be openly running. Any in-character words that you write on Aeipathy will count toward your word goal for this year's event. We would like to see everyone meet their personal goals for this month, whether it's 5,000 words or 100,000 words. That said, we have three set awards for you to earn if you are looking to push yourself and earn those coveted Member Points!
The Prizes
The following awards will shine on all of your character accounts! You may see some of these on older members' accounts already from previous years. As well as each of these pretty award icons, you'll also be awarded the listed points!
Bronze Award Achieve over 15,000 words. Award: 100 Member Points
Silver Award Achieve over 30,000 words. Award: 150 Member Points
Gold Award Achieve over 50,000 words. Award: 250 Member Points
The Rules
-- All words that count toward NaNoWriMo must be in character and a part of our canon storyline. AU Threads will not count.
-- The sole exception to the above rule is our extended Summer Event: Apollo's Muse. All posts made in these boards will count towards your NaNo total.
-- No code inside of your posts will be counted toward your word count. All of our code is automatic, however, so this should not be an issue.
-- If you ghost-write a post, those words will count toward your total word count for the month.
-- This contest is on a per member basis, not per character. So, you're aiming for 50K (or whatever your goal is) across your characters, not with each of them.
-- You do not need to sign up for this event! Every member is automatically put into the running and will have their word counts checked at the end of the month by our staff team - easy peasy! You're in it automatically so why not have a go? ^_^
-- You do not need to track your own words! Our staff team will do this at the end of the month! However, if you wish to track your own word counts for fun, or to see how you're doing, I suggest you head on over to nanowrimo.org/. They have a really wonderful and immersive means of tracking your word counts. You can set your own goals, even if it isn't for the full 50,000 words. They give badges and awards and also help you track your progress by alerting you of big milestones!
-- Please note that your word counts will be counted through copy and pasting your posts into Google Docs. Some word counts count things differently so this is just a heads up. We recommend not sitting on exactly 50K, thinking you've made it - maybe aim for a few dozen over your goal to be sure.
Tips and Tricks
We want everyone to be successful. Whether your goal is 15,000 or 50,000, we want to see you hit a goal that will make you feel great about your efforts, your plotting, and all of the stories that you will write over the span of the next 30 days.
-- We suggest that you don't leave all of your posting until the last minute or hold back posts. Not only does this hold other people up from their goals, but it makes reaching your own word count goals more difficult. If you keep on posting regularly throughout the month, you might actually surprise yourself about how much you get done!
-- Be swift as a coursing river, everyone. If you can manage it, don't leave replies for too long. If you keep up, keep consistent, and keep sending your posts back to your partners, it keeps yours and everyone else's muse high, keeps them writing toward their goals, and makes it easier for you to reach yours.
-- Some of you might average 400 words, and some of you might average 600 or more. We suggest that you stretch your wings as a writer. Write an extra 100 words a post, or experiment with different ways of fleshing out your writing. Try different exercises to improve your own writing strategies and increase your word counts. Just don't fall into the trap of writing too much and getting drawn away from the purpose and plot of your posts. This isn't an exercise in purple prose. But adding a little here and there could have big results for your word count total and help expand your range as a writer - win-win!
-- Don't overburden yourself with extra threads if you won't be able to handle all of them, especially after NaNoWriMo ends. We know that something like this is exciting, but taking too much onto your plate now will affect your writing come December and the months after. Simply pace yourself. If you're a writer that likes to keep strict thread numbers, then make it your goal to keep up with them closer instead of taking on more. If you know you can handle more, plot, explore with your fellow members, come up with new storyline etc. But don't overextend yourself so you feel pressured and get nothing done - we're here for fun, not for stress!
-- Forget about the awards. No, seriously. If you're hung up on the number, we find it's stressful to keep writing. We recommend literally just writing and having fun. Sure, keep an eye on things if you want to make sure a particular goal is within reach, but I think you'll be surprised how many words you actually write if you just let go and go for it.
The Deadline
NaNoWriMo will end at 11:59pm EST on November 30th, 2020. A few days after the end of the month, we'll come out with the winners and the awards for the month will be added to the next Broadcast. So just remember: pace yourself, set yourself attainable goals, keep writing, and have fun!
