For an event that strained already-frayed relations between a brother and sister that had never gotten on in the first place; Elias embarrassing his little sister at the last court meeting had been inconsequential to most of the courtiers present. In fact, many might have whispered about kind Elias had been to bring attention to his sister and let her share the limelight for once with the rest of them. However, what they didn’t know was that this was an attempt from Elias to shut her down. Danae had been doing something that her brother did not like, so he exploited her own fears and anxieties in regard to being the center of attention. He took her own greatest weakness and used it against her as if she was some sort of enemy, just because he had overlooked informing her about his grand plan to placate the courtiers. Elias had been foolish enough to not tell his sister, who was just as talented as Keikelius in this field, that his fantastic idea to fix the economy was just a farce. He also saw the flaws in his plan but made no attempt to inform his own sister that he had no real intention of implementing it. His own stupidity had left Danae no choice, but to try and undermine his words so that her own country would not fall into ruin at his hands. As she had not been told that it was all false and Elias had shown before that he would not listen to his own family… Danae had to do it. She did not have any other choice.
But Elias did have options available to him. Their mother knew what Elias was planning. She could have stepped in to stop Danae before the damage would have been done. That would have been the easiest thing to do with the least amount of hurt. Instead, he turned to embarrassing her and dredging up her anxieties to forcibly shut her mouth. He could have taken responsibility for his missteps, for his lack of foresight when he forgot to inform her, but instead, he put the blame on his little sister who was just trying to do right by Athenia. In the hours following the court event, Elias had made it clear that Danae should have done nothing. That it wasn’t her place to stand up to her head of household in the way that she did, by whispering in other’s ears. He was more than willing to put the blame onto her and not recognize that he was at fault too for what had occurred.
Danae could not forgive him for this.
Elias had known what he was doing. He knew how his sister would flounder and how upset she would be afterward. Yet he did it anyway as it was what suited him best at the moment. He clearly demonstrated that he did not give a damn about Danae when he exploited her own faults for the whole court to see and then later refused to acknowledge that it was wrong. He had shown his true colors at that moment and Danae had been forced to reckon with the fact that she could not have the utmost faith in her brother. Not that she really had much of that, to begin with. Elias had never been the kindest older brother to the girl who was eight years younger than him. Danae always knew that he saw her as a thorn, a pest, a nuisance, and countless other things that never truly encouraged any sort of positive relationship between the two. But this moment? This one split-second decision made at court was a bit of a tipping point for Danae. She now knew that she couldn’t trust Elias. He would always think of himself first and foremost.
With this mindset, it had been easy for Danae to withhold the use of her urchins for his cause, much to the chagrin of the rest of her family. They all knew that the youngest Stravos had a list of orphans on the streets that would be at her beck and call for her little business ventures that she wanted to keep under wraps. After all, the last thing Danae needed was the world knowing that her money fueled several of Athenia’s more prominent gambling rings. That she was the one pocketing the coin that came from the merchants paying for the right to decorate their shops in Stravos colors or that deep in her desk was a careful collection of all the loans owed to her throughout Athenia. At least, not when the world expected her to be some frivolous gossip queen like all Stravos women were supposed to be. Those street rats were the ones who made it all possible as they could go where Danae could not and their own desperation for food made them rather loyal when their benefactor could provide them with the delicacies they could never afford on their own. They were a crucial part of Danae’s business model and the youngest Stravos knew that without them, her entire enterprise could come crumbling to the ground.
So, it was a bit understandable why Danae had thus far refused to just turn them over to Elias so he could use them as he saw fit. There was a certain expectation in the Stravos house that Danae would eventually ‘come to her senses’ and give them access to this resource of hers -- but that was all they were to the rest of her family. A resource. Danae depended on them. She was not going to hand them out willy-nilly to whoever asked for them, especially if was for Elias. The Stravos girl was not going to hand over the key to everything she truly held dear just because he desired some cronies. Especially after what he had done at the court session. She had absolutely no reason to trust that Elias wouldn’t ruin this one thing that made her happy, this one thing that she could take pride in when she failed so miserably at being the perfect little courtier that everyone else wanted her to be. The urchins were hers and no one would use them without her say-so. Danae was not going to change that just because one boy who fancied himself a king thought that everything that was hers was his to exploit. Not today and not ever.
At least this was the mindset that Danae had when she checked and double-checked that the master list of her urchins was safe at the bottom of the secret desk compartment in her room. She had every faith that it was fine, that it would always be fine… but Danae had to be sure. The girl was fairly confident that even though her brother didn’t know that this was where all those important documents, ledgers, and other notes that Danae did not want getting out was kept, there was a chance that Elias might know. Her brother had never taken a direct interest in what Danae did, but her father had been the one who designed the desk. If she refused enough, he might just tell Elias where the list was or summon Taureas to go find one of his urchins. She knew that this could happen, making her whole desire to protect this part of her ultimately fruitless in the end, but Danae was fairly determined to hold out and defy her brother for now. After all, no matter how much she hated Persephone, it did not pale in comparison to the volatile emotions that would come if her brother ruined this one thing that was more precious than the gold it brought in for Danae. She was going to do everything that she could to protect it. No matter what the cost of doing that was.
