Marietta was a hypocrite. She could accept it. She was a hypocrite. She nearly slept with Adrestus of Nikolaos, and boy was that a night. Marietta almost went through with it. Had her nerves not stopped her she might have fallen into bed with him...
As usual, heat rose to her cheeks. She was lost in her fantasies, of a night that she could not stop replaying again and again. But no matter how amazing that time could have been, it did not make the girl any less of a hypocrite. For she wanted transparency with Evi and yet… she was not yet transparent herself. There was no real need to talk to her younger sister, after all it was not the job of Hebe and Evi to concern themselves over Marietta, not like how it was Marietta and Sanasa’s job to watch over them… yet to lead by example in this case would be what’s right. At least Evi was old enough to know and understand, and Hebe could remain in her innocent bubble for a while longer.
And despite Marietta playing the role of older sister far too often… Evi was by far the person in this world she trusted the most. She was friends with Elias, with Sofia, near her entire life and would fall upon a sword for them… but the love she felt for her friends was a mere shadow to that of her family, and especially to Evi. If anyone deserved to know about her true anxieties or excitement, that is in her life it was Evi.
And so Marietta made her way to her sister’s room, after stopping by the kitchens to collect a plate of sweets. She would not be a hypocrite sister any longer. Sweets should make it easier for this conversation to be had at the very least. It gave Marietta something to chew over as she mulled over her next words, instead of stumbling through the conversation like a tittering fool.
Upon Marietta reaching the door she lifted her hand to knock on it but hesitated before her knuckles made impact. What was she going to say? By the way, you remember how I’m courting Adrestus, well we nearly had sex. I know it is best to wait until marriage, and I know this may cause a scandal, but you should know because honesty is the best policy. No, that was lunacy! She couldn’t say it like that.
What kind of example was Marietta being in her younger sister by being this honest with her? On one hand, she wanted transparency and wanted to be there and support her sister, but on the other she expected Evi and Hebe to be proper ladies and represent their family well. Marietta certainly wasn’t proper, and she didn’t want Evi and Hebe thinking that it was okay to follow in her footsteps.
Marietta pursed her lips, staring at the door before her. No, no, she must talk to Evi. At the very least she should keep no secrets from her. With a nervous heart her knuckles rapped on the door. “Evi, dear? I brought sweets.”

Still in bed, Evi was spending a relaxing morning lounging in her room with a good book. The book was several hundred pages, each yellowed with age and use. It was one of her favourites. The book was a simple earthy hued cover, warming to the eyes, comforting. After all these years it was soft to the touch and the edges had a similar look to some beloved blanket. Letters forming words were faded on some pages, marked by Evi following each word with one of her fingers in her more formative years. It was another fictional book - a story of adventure and great battles, nay a poem that told tale of a miraculous feat of heroics. Some of it was rather pretentious, Evi thought, but she loved it all the same.
To be able to travel and see the world - both the known and the unknown - was remarkable. When Evi read books like this one, she could pretend she was part of the journey, and sometimes she swore she could smell the sea-salted air, and taste exotic foods from lands afar. That was what made a good book, in Evi’s eyes.
A quiet knock signalled the desired entry of someone in the household. Evi hoped it wasn’t a servant, sent by one of her parents for her to get out of bed. She was enjoying her book too much. But she heard her sister’s voice on the other side of the door, and she sighed in relief, “Come in,” Evi called as she closed her book and placed it beside her on the bed. She sat up, pushing the covers away and moving to her wardrobe to seek out more appropriate desire. She did not worry that her sister would see her naked as she changed into a simple magenta chiton and threw her night clothing back onto the bed for one of the servants to clean up later.
“Sweets?” Evi asked as her sister appeared and closed the door behind her, “At this time in the morning? What have you done that I deserve such a treat?” She teased as she took a brush and began pulling it through her long brunette locks, riding it of knots that had formed during the night.
It was often Marietta’s way. The two sisters were closest out of the four, and Evi knew Marietta’s tells. If she turned up empty handed, she was either bored or preparing to rebuke her sister. If she used the word ‘dear, there was normally a lesson to be learnt on Evi’s part. If she brought goodies with her, she had either done wrong and was seeking forgiveness, or she had something troubling on her mind and was looking for guidance from her younger sister. Evi thought back over the past few days, trying to think what might bring Marietta to her door.
The girl smoothed out the sheets on her bed. She did not have the knack for doing it like the servants would, all neat an ready for the next use, but she smoothed them best she could and invited her sister to come and join her on the bed. It was big enough for the to of them to lounge quite comfortably with the bowl of sweets in between them. Evi leaned forward and claimed one of the sweets, popping it into her mouth and began sucking on it. As she did, she took her sister in, still trying to figure out what Marietta wanted to talk about.

Evi leaned forward and claimed one of the sweets, popping it into her mouth and began sucking on it. As she did, she took her sister in, still trying to figure out what Marietta wanted to talk about.
Her sister knew her far too well. What did Marietta do for Evi to deserve such a treat? This was already off to a horrible start. Perhaps the treats were too much. Should she have come with tea? Or maybe she should have brought a half-finished art piece… or had asked Evi to listen to her harp. That way if Marietta chickened out, she could at least have an easy conversation to fall back on.
Her smile wavered as she entered Evi’s room and sat upon her bed, placing the bowl of sweets between the sisters. “What, can I not visit my lovely sister’s bedroom without drawing suspicion? I already feel as if I am on trial.” Marietta teased, using humor to deflect her rising anxieties.
Quickly as to not put her foot in her mouth, Marietta chewed on one of the sweets. She wanted to talk about this elegantly. There had to be a way to be honest, but also to encourage her sister to keep her virginity until marriage. Marietta would have wished to remain pure as well, but if any sister were to make that mistake she would have wished it to be her. Any mistake the sisters made was best made by Marietta so they have the chance to marry well and be happy. She would bear the brunt of the guilt on her shoulders to allow all three sisters to flourish and thrive.
“You know me too well, I’m afraid.” Marietta finally said, swallowing her treat down. Her stomach began to bubble. Would her sister think her a slut? No Evi wasn’t like that. She was kind and understanding. But perhaps she would think Marietta was foolish, or be angry that she questioned her sister and then went and did the very same thing.
She took another deep breath, running her fingers through her hair. “Yesterday I visited Adrestus on his ship. Oh it was wonderful, Evi. I felt like an adventurer on it. I was ready to just sail off to some far away land, where I could discover untold beauties and share these visions with the word.”
Marietta’s eyes glimmered for a second, before settling back into her anxious tendencies. “But I did something I should not have done, Evi. I had half the mind not telling you, but there should be no secrets between us. I nearly slept with him, Evi.” Marietta bit her lip. “And… and it was fun, us messing around. It was great. But it was uncouth, and unladylike, and should word get around I can’t imagine the scandal. And our parents… they would be so mad. Especially had I gone all the way...”
Her mind did as it always did. It was running through all the worst-case scenarios, from being the talk of court, to being shunned and disowned by her family. The latter would never happen, but the scenario popped in her mind nevertheless. “I would be a hypocrite keeping this from you, after you were so honest with me and your feelings for Elias.” Feelings that she hoped had faded by now, not that Marietta would say that aloud. “I’m glad you didn’t follow in my footsteps, Evi.” Footsteps Marietta full well intended on continuing.

“Not on trial, sister,” the younger of the pair laughed, “It’s just that you don’t often come to my room seeking out my company this early in the morning… much less with sweets for us to enjoy. It makes me think you either want something from me, or you have something you need to share… so which is it?” Evi used her teeth to break the small, hard sweet open in her mouth, crunching her way through the rest of it before picking up another one and popping it in her mouth. If there was anything to be said about Evi, it was that she had a very sweet tooth, thoroughly enjoying anything like it. Marietta knew her well enough to know that, which raised her suspicions even more.
As she watched her sister, Evi noticed a sort of… glow about her. She was a bit of a dichotomy this morning: both tense and seemingly perfectly at ease. Evi couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but she knew that elder of the sisters was both troubled and delighted about something.
“That I do, sister…” she replied slowly, feeling like they were about to get to the crux of the matter without any sort of preamble. Marietta, with her nervous ways, had always been one to beat about the bush when it came to certain matters. Apart from the time she had cornered Evi and Elias and demanded to know about their night spent together, Marietta was rarely so forward.
But this morning… then it all came spilling out in one gush of words. Evi blinked, surprised at how open and honest Marietta was being. “Well… there’s a lot there to unpack…” was what she said in the first instance, and she felt hot in her stomach that she was still lying to Marietta about sleeping with Elias - though they both knew the truth of it anyway. “Is he…” she shook her head, that wasn’t a road she wanted to go down. This was her sister and her friend. She did not need to know those kinds of details. “I hope this means you plan to start a life with him.” She said instead.
“I am glad you told me, Etta.” She said after a long pause. It was good that Marietta brought the sweets with her - it gave them both a chance to keep their mouths busy while they mulled over what they were going to say next. The silence lingered between them as Evi continued to suck on the sweet in her mouth. She felt like a fraud, lying to her sister all this time when the rumours about herself and Elias were well and truly circulating throughout Athenia. Apart from Marietta, no one had asked them right out if they were sleeping together, but it was still a burden to bear, and she didn’t like this dishonesty with her favourite sister.
“I doubt there will be a scandal. You two are courting… and there is no law against sleeping with a man out of wedlock. It is only… guidance. And it isn’t like you are whoring yourself out to any and every man who comes knocking, are you?” Evi laughed, though it came out very forced. “I’ve seen the way you two look at each other. I can tell the two of you are in love with each other, and I couldn’t be happier for you: there is no better man in all of Greece than Adrestus. I cannot judge you for what you have planned.”
Evi swallowed the sweet along with her doubts and misgivings and finally admitted the truth to her sister, “And you are not a hypocrite. You were only trying to protect me, I understand that. But… you have heard the rumours and probably guessed them to be true already, but you are not the only person to have ideas of having sex with the man you love.” She couldn’t say ‘I have slept with Elias’ as bluntly as Marietta had admitted her own night of passion, but she knew her sister would catch her drift.

Marietta heard the rumors, of course she heard the rumors. She had her doubts ever since that conversation in Teleos. However, as time continued to pass, Marietta grew less and less suspicious despite the rumors that were running rampart throughout Athenia. Evi would not lie to her for that long. Evi would not hide things from her. Evi was a good sister, and it was Marietta who should be ashamed of being suspicious and causing a scene.
Marietta started coughing as the swallowed too quickly on a sweet, it lodging itself in her throat. She turned her face away from her sister. Evi had caught her completely off guard with her confession. She had expected this to be about Marietta. At worse, Evi would be disappointed, but at best she had a few questions and they went along with her day.
And now Marietta faced a conundrum. In Teleos she asked for transparency. She asked that Evi and Elias tell the truth and she wouldn’t be upset, nearly disappointed. But several months had passed, and while Marietta made an active effort to follow her own example, it seemed that Evi did not heed her warning. As such Marietta should be angry. She should be upset, ready to barge down the doors of the Palatai and demand to speak with Elias, dragging Evi along by the ear.
Oh gods this was a complicated matter now, made more complicated with the fact that this was a confrontation. Marietta loathed confrontation with every fiber of her being. Marietta wished at this moment Sanasa was here instead. She would know what to say and wouldn’t back down until Evi relented and apologized for her deception. And even after the apology, Sanasa would continue on, perhaps even to a point where Marietta jumped in to defend Evi.
She wiped the bit of tears that had formed from her choking on the candy. She fanned her face, recomposing herself. “I-I’m sorry you… what? With Elias?” That was also a whole other matter. Marietta loved Elias, she really did. Her friendship was something she cherished and would continue to do so until she long since passed from this Earth and is making her trip to Hades. But… it did make her ill thinking her sister slept with him. He was a brother to Marietta, and so for her sister to do such a thing…
No, this was not a vision she needed. Marietta banished the thought from her mind, refocusing on the important matters at hand. “Evi, why did you hide this from me? There isn’t meant to be secrets between us. And I had told you back then if you were honest then I would be disappointed, not angry. You had a myriad of chances beforehand. Why wait until this moment to tell me?”

It would have been funny, watching Marietta choke on her sweet the same way Evi had choked on her wine all those many months ago. It would have been funny if they weren’t having such a serious conversation, one that Evi had all but lied about. She felt guilty, that was definitely true. But the lie slipped out, smooth and easy like melted butter running down toast. She didn’t suffocate under the weight of her lie, the lies that she had always feared most were the ones close enough to the truth to pass under the radar, or the ones so big that you’d never dream it up in your wildest dreams. This lie had been somewhere in the middle, little enough that it had been easy to hide the truth, but large enough that the guilt had all but gnawed away at her over the past few months.
At times, it was easy to forget that she was lying, and she was surprised at how easy it was to keep the illusion going. Like if she didn’t talk about it, it wasn’t a problem. Marietta, nor the rest of the family come to think about it, had questioned her about her relationship with Elias over the past few months.
It would have been funny, but as she watched her sister’s expression move through so many emotions as she tried to process the information, Evi’s guilt turned into shame, and she ducked her head, allowing her hair to come in front of her face, such that she didn’t have to look at her sister anymore. “I…” Evi reached over to the table beside her bed and took a slow sip of her drink, giving herself a few extra seconds to steady her nerves. Her stomach was churning with anxiety, her hands sweaty and clammy. She wished she could skip forward in time, to a time when everything was resolved, without having to go through the tricky middle bit that linked here to there. She had never been good at talking about emotional things. She was entirely out of her comfort zone. Setting her drink back down on the table, she braced herself and forced the words past her lips, her heart rate skyrocketing as she did so.
“I didn’t want to even disappoint you, Marietta,” she admitted quietly, “I didn’t mean to keep it a secret for so long. There were so many times where I was about to tell you but it was never quite the right moment. There was always something else, or there were people around, or it didn’t quite fit into the conversation.” She looked back up, tucking half of her hair behind her ear as seafoam blue eyes looked beseechingly into her sister’s eyes. She hesitated, then reached out to place her hand over Marietta’s, the sweets lying forgotten between them. “It was just… never the right time.” She repeated lamely.
“But I told you before, I love him. I’m in love with him. This isn’t just some passing fancy, not a little crush from a child. And I think he has feeling for me too, or I wouldn’t be carrying on with him the way I am.” The girl scraped her hand through her scalp then tucked her hair behind her ears again with her free hand with a sigh. She thought coming clean would allow the two of them to bond more, rather than drive a rift between them. Worse, she'd derailed the conversation from Marietta's evening of passion to talk more about her and her love-making. “I know I can never marry him, he is destined for a princess of some description, not the third daughter of a lesser lord. But… that doesn’t stop me from hoping.”

Marietta stood from the bed. She needed to pace. She needed to move. This conversation was not what she signed up for. But the movement did not calm her emotions, in fact it made them worse. She couldn’t comprehend exactly what she was feeling. Disappointment? Anger? Betrayal? The reality was it was a mix of things. At first she was perplexed, but upon hearing Evi’s explanation things only got more confusing.
Marietta and Evi had a conversation not long after the confrontation in which she told her sister that she had feelings for Elias. That was the perfect moment in which she could have told the truth to Marietta. But even if in that conversation she felt uncomfortable, there were months of time that she could have just approached Marietta, like she did to Evi. There was no excuse that could vindicate her from not speaking to Marietta. And even if Marietta would have been disappointed, it would have faded. She had made it perfectly clear to Evi that day that she will support her in whatever she chooses, even if Marietta herself vehemently disagreed with her little sister.
She took a deep breath and stopped pacing to turn to Evi. “The sex itself doesn’t matter. You’ve done it, we’re over it, it’s passed. But if you were fearing disappointment then I have no idea why you thought to hide it from me, Evi. You had every chance to come and talk to me. You know I never would turn you away. You know that I wanted honesty but… but you stayed silent, Evi. And did you dodge your fear? I think not, because now my disappointment is beyond measure.”
She thumbed her nose. “I can’t stop whatever you feel towards Elias, even if I don’t agree with it. You’re an adult as much as I hate to admit it. I do believe it is foolish though, knowing you’re pursuing a man who will never be yours, never truly. And I do believe you deserve someone that would love you unconditionally, not take you as a mistress, nor leave you once their political plans come to fruition. Should our family not consist of four daughters, then I would be more worried of the forsaken responsibility by chasing a man who could never be your’s rather than looking for a man who is appropriately matched.” Luckily Sanasa is looking for just that, and should one day Marietta marries Adrestus then… at least this side of the Antonis branch lives on.
Marietta moved to sit on the bed once again. “But Evi, we have never been about secrets. I am not an evil witch who will curse you for sleeping with my friend, nor will I punish you for your feelings. But one thing is for certain… keeping things hidden from me is never the answer. And I can tell you with full certainty that I have never been more angry, disappointed, and saddened in my life, both by you and by Elias’s inability to speak with me.”

And I can tell you with full certainty that I have never been more angry, disappointed, and saddened in my life, both by you and by Elias’s inability to speak with me.”
When Marietta moved from the bed to stand up and start pacing Evi’s heart stuttered in her chest. This wasn’t how things were supposed to go. She had, over the past few months, prepared and perfected a long speech about how amazing Elias was, about how right it was that they should be together. It was designed for anyone to listen to, most of all her sister, who she loved and trusted above all others.
But the conversation didn’t take that turning. Instead, it zipped off in a direction Evi had not been prepared for. Of course Marietta wouldn’t like it that they two had slept together, but there were bigger issues at play here now. Evi had deceived her sister, had kept it a secret for far too long. She had presented like her sister was slow-witted and would not pay heed to the rumours circulating around the city. She had hidden the truth from her and now there was that fact to contend with. She felt the shame and guilt crawl up inside her, squeezing her and causing her no small amount of pain.
Marietta and Evi had always been so close. There were no secrets between them. That much was evident from the way Marietta had wanted to talk to Evi about her own night of carnal relations the morning immediately after the fact. Evi owed it to Marietta to feel this way. And it was a horrible way to feel.
“I know,” she replied, shifting on the bed so her legs dangled over the edge, scooting infinitesimally closer to her sister. “I know, I had so many opportunities to tell you, and I wanted to, it just never felt… right. I didn’t even want to lie to you when you asked Elias and me outright, but I was frightened of your reaction, and didn’t want you to think less of me for it.” Of course, Marietta would think less of her, but worse, it wasn’t just about the sex anymore, Marietta would think less of Evi because she had been hiding the truth for so long. She verbalised this too, “I am so sorry for hiding this from you. I know I have betrayed your trust and goodwill. I just… couldn’t admit the truth… I don’t know why.”
The conversation moved on to Elias more specifically, and Evi remained silent for a long time after the fact. When she finally did speak, it was barely in answer to what Marietta had said. She just needed Marietta to understand her love for Elias. “I know, I know. I don’t always relate well to people my own age and when he started paying attention to me, it was thrilling. I was introverted, bookish. yet I was also the life and soul of the party. Many friends, but few that I was truly close to… And then Elias started paying attention to me. He started to invite me to spend time with him, finding excuses to get me alone after hours and we would talk. Actually he would talk and I would listen. He was brilliant, of course, and he knew it. His opinions soon became my opinions. He could have said the sky was scarlet and I would have agreed with him and even worse I would have believed it even though I could see it was blue.”
Evi nodded in all the right places as Marietta spoke of her anger and disappointment. Her features were schooled into an expression of complete abjection, so desperate was she to move on from this argument and gain her sister’s trust again. Though she suspected it would take a lot more than just looking sad and beseeching to complete such a feat. “Please know how sorry I am. I have nothing to say in my own defence anymore. What I did was wrong, I shouldn’t have kept this from you.” She wanted to move away from this line of discussion, back to a topic which would make Marietta light up like she did whenever she spoke of Adrestus. It was an underhand tactic, and Marietta would probably see right through it, but she said it anyway, “Do you plan to marry Adrestus, then?”

These were dangerous words her sister was spewing. His opinions became her’s? Evi was one of the most intelligent girls she ever knew, and the Antonis family was one with a strong moral compass. While they were ever loyal to the throne, they were not blindly following one man. That is not to say that Marietta thought her friend evil, but with the rumors ever flying about Elias and the events in Artamisios leading to his house arrest, she at least was wary. Should Elias just make time to talk to her, then Marietta would feel at least more at ease. Was Evi a contributing factor to her friend’s avoidance? No, now was not the time.
Marietta sighed, running a hand through her hair. These are dangerous waters and Marietta had to right the ship before it capsized. But how could she do that? The girl was obviously in love, or what appeared to be similar to the feeling. Or was this worship? Marietta wished for even just a moment that she could peer into her mind and grasp her true feelings.
Not to be distracted by her line of inquiry, Marietta looked at Evi with deep concern. “I cannot forgive you, Evi, not right away. The fact that you held this back for so long breaks my heart more than you could ever know. It would take a while before my forgiveness can be had.”
Marietta bit her lip and turned even more to face her sister. “With that being said, Evi, I still love you with all my heart. And while I’m saddened and hurt, I can put it away for just this moment. Evi, I am concerned with what you’re saying. Elias is… a great man. He is. Despite his… flaws,” At that word Marietta rubbed the scar beside her lip. The scar was given just prior to a major fallout to Elias. She had told her family and anyone who asked she had fallen while on a walk with Elias. She dared not tell the truth that the man hit her, nor would she ever. Then she believed she deserved it, only now getting over her guilt and forgiving herself. But should Elias ever do the same for Evi, she knew not what she would do.
“But to trust so blindly a man is a dangerous path. It doesn’t matter the man, Evi. I believe Adrestus is good and kind. I would love to one day give him my heart completely and totally. But never will I blindly follow and hang on his every word. Nor should that be you, sister dearest.” Marietta paused considering her next words. “Evi, you impress me in so many ways but is your mind that I most feel pride for. Your mind is something special, something to be cherished. In this world, we women are in many ways inferior to men. Our speed, our strength they rarely match those of the opposite gender. But the one thing we do have that is truly superior,” Marietta tapped her sister’s temple with her finger. “Shall never be given away, no matter the price. Do not believe every word a man says. Think, question, learn the truth. This is the greatest strength you have. Squander it for no one.”

It seemed the conversation would not be turning back to Marietta and Adrestus, such was the news Evi had dropped that it seemed to be overshadowing everything else. This really wasn’t how Evi envisaged this conversation going. Marietta said she loved Evi, but every word out of her mouth seemed to be against her. Evi's sister is the person she most loved and most hated - they were closest, yet also fought the fiercest when it mattered most. Evi didn’t immediately answer, pushing herself back further onto the bed and leaning down on one of her elbows, reaching for another of the sweets sitting in the bowl. She sucked on it silently, staring at her sister, her face contorted into an ugly expression. She wasn’t facing Marietta yet so, for just a couple of seconds, Evi allowed herself to squeeze her eyes shut, pretending like a child that if she couldn’t see the problem, then she wouldn’t have to deal with it.
“You think,” Evi began, her gaze hardened ad her heart hardened, “That I blindly follow Elias? That I have no thoughts of my own anymore because of him?” She didn’t know what she was saying - all Evi had said was that Elias had wormed his way into her heart. She had said nothing about ‘blindly following’, or… ‘hanging on his every word’. Evi didn’t like the turn this conversation had taken. It was as if Marietta thought that Evi wasn’t clever enough to be with someone like Elias. That she had book-smarts but no common sense.
But this wasn’t something that could even involve common sense. It wasn’t a concept that can be articulated. It was just there. Like the existence of gravity. Of pain. Of the sun. Marietta looked at her, as if she didn’t know, didn’t understand that Evi would move the stars for Elias, should he ask.
“I’m so glad you think of me in such a way. Like my thoughts and feelings are not my own. Do you think Elias is controlling me - do you think I no not my own mind?” It didn’t occur to her that she was being in the least bit hypocritical. It didn’t occur to Evi that what she had just said moments ago could deserve the answer Marietta had supplied. It didn’t occur to her that maybe this infatuation with Elias had caused her to see the world in a different light. He came into her life and showed her how wrong she was about the world. He showed me colour and life and possibility and in the best of ways, her life was never the same again. Evi saw Elias as nothing but goodness.
And here was her sister, spouting the exact opposite, claiming to know all there was to know about love. She was supposed to support her, not argue against what Evi was saying. The girl finished her sweet, swallowing the remains of it before finally pushing herself off of her bed and stalking towards the door. She had picked up the bowl of sweets in one hand and held it against her chest, ready to pass to Marietta when she passed through into the hall. Evi opened the door, turning bodily to face her sister, “I want you to leave.”
