It is important for any merchant to understand the flow of supply and demand, if there is a desire to keep a name or business afloat, the merchant would need to cater the supply to the public demand. Mafdet understood that she needed to stay relevant and have a variety of goods to keep her delta of money-ways from drying up. Its important to keep stock of sellable material and working under a black market meant stocking up on materials that are likely prohibited. There is a danger in dealing with contraband, but the Lady Mafdet has played the game of survival a lot longer than anyone would think. Only a few really know what Mafdet is capable, and those know should her shrewd mind is what kept her alive thus far. In this line of work there is no room for softness, Mafdet had to become a cutthroat dealer and has still be tested, because a woman will not easily gain the respect from men as a woman of business. Although, Mafdet was smart to allow her man, for the moment, use his male privilege to vouch for her role in business, thus opened her to more avenues and doorways.
Mafdet collected a variety of merchandise, though she also specialized in a more physical means of gaining profit – outside of selling her body. The Shita of Mansa is a nickname only a select few know her as to protect her identity from those that would want her dead. Mafdet has killed for profit, whether it was by her own blade or in a more veiled fashion like poison. Snake venom is a favorite of the Egyptian woman, because depending on the snake the results are quite effective. A lot of her customers require snake venom, some of them would order similar merchandise; all the while, Mafdet became in a constant need to re-stock.
Mafdet walked towards the front entrance of her home, she was already fully dressed in her kalasaris and beaded wig as she gazed at the hot son. Ata, her male cheetah, came up to her side with a loud purr as he rubbed his long neck against her side, which made Mafdet smile as she took her hand to gently rub the fur on his neck. Mafdet spoke gently, “It is time to spread my net a little further, Ata…” Mafdet needed another snake dealer that she could rely on a little more, when her current dealer was out of stock. She has a business to upkeep and Atenotep does not seem willing to pull the reigns of her operations, which Mafdet preferred anyway. Ata stepped away from Mafdet to lay down outside with his sister, Kissa, to enjoy the hot sun that Re drew in with solar chariot.
Around her shoulders and resting on her elbows, Mafdet kept a veil that resembled the color rich blue of the lapis lazuli gemstone. As she stepped forward into the yard of her establishment, Mafdet threw part of the veil over her head, which only kept her hazel eyes viewable. The fabric of the veil was thin; therefore, it was transparent enough to see her face underneath the blue fabric. Mafdet passed her cheetahs as she exited her home, closing the wooden door behind her with an agenda to complete. It would be of poor taste to go to a market and make visible purchase of venom, and the likelihood to find a vendor who has what she needs was also unlikely. The best way to get what she needed privately was to find and employ someone who worked outside of the legal frame in Egypt, or at least would be willing to do so. Although, a contact of Mafdet instructed her to find a snake charmer to get the venom she needed, and most charmers are performers. It was clear to Mafdet where she needed to go.
Later that day, Mafdet arrived at the location of the performers to find several, but eventually she found a snake charmer in the middle of her act. Nimbly, Mafdet walked towards the closes seating arrangement to watch the performer – her eyes carefully trained on the other woman.

While the main performance, The Tempest of Set, was given at night, during the day different auxiliary performances can be found. The circus was always busy, always entertaining, ready to entice its next patron. Today Kesi could be found with her snakes.
Some performers lived for the audience, others focused only on Amenemhat and his ever-watching gaze, but when Kesi performed the entire world melted away. The only thing that existed was Kesi and her snakes. Music floated in the air, at first like a whisper in the wind. It was low, soft, tantalizing. The snakes looked up, towards the charmer and her pungi. Kesi met their gaze. At this moment she were them, and they were her. The snakes and the charmer were one being, moving together, united by this song. Another low note came from the pungi, and another, and another. The snakes all began to stiffen, and their tales rattle to the beat.
Step by step she got ever closer, the music hypnotizing the creatures and her audience. While Kesi’s world only consisted of her and the snakes, in reality, the music was meant to captivate all that was around her. There was allure in danger that the poisonous snakes provided, but also an entrancing way of which the music from her pungi worked, oft making the audience one with the snakes as well. The young charmer stepped between the creatures, her music continuing and now completely stiffening the snakes. They swayed back and forth flowing with her song. It was a performance. It was her world.
But the show must eventually come to an end, and this was only a taste. The real excitement came with The Temptest of Set in which the price of admission would jump and those who need more would be all but willing to pay. Kesi’s song went silent and with a quick flourish to the crowd, she was finished with her show and putting away the snakes, well nearly one. There was one among the group that was her current favorite. She collected Apep, allowing him to slither up her arm and rest around her neck. His tail wrapped around the small girl’s tattooed chest.
“You stare at me so intently,” Kesi says, not looking at the woman within the now dispersing crowd. She would know who she was speaking to. Kesi just continued to clean up her act. “I swear, Miss, that your gaze was more transfixed than my snakes. I felt it cutting through the song.”
Finally, the small girl finished. She turned towards the woman she was speaking to and made her way towards her. Each step was light and quiet, almost as if she was floating above the sand. “I do hope you enjoyed the performance, Miss. There will be another, more spectacular one tonight. You should come to see it. My brother is the ringleader and by his design, a truly amazing show was created. I will be doing a much longer version of my set. There are many things to see at The Tempest of Set.”

Mafdet remained seated as the crowd begun to disperse as the snake charmer neared the conclusion of her performance. The woman was gifted and exactly what Mafdet had in mind to get the venom she needed. The Egyptian Cobra also known as an Asp are the largest species of Cobra that could get up to seven feet, such a prize would be valuable to obtain. The Egyptian Cobra’s venom alone could kill an African Elephant in three hours after injecting its venom, so the effects on a human would prove to be quite fatal and quick. For such dangerous creatures they are often seen hypnotized or curious by the alluring sound of a charmer’s flute. Truthfully, Mafdet could purchase her own cobra, but she would rather not create a paper trail or would have to keep the serpent. A snake charmer was perfect and Mafdet hoped the woman before her would accept the proposition she has fashioned, though any native Egyptian would be a good bargainer.
Mafdet eyed the last member of the crowd walk off from the performance, before she returned her gaze towards the performer. Expectantly, Mafdet awaited her turn to speak as the woman addressed her and the woman smirked underneath her transparent veil as she shifted herself on the seating. Mafdet responded, “I’ve been told, though I hope I am not too unnerving for you.” Mafdet continued, “Although, I have a habit to fixate on the things that I want or need…” The wealthy woman stood from where she stood to look about the circus that was visited her several viewers. Mafdet huffed lightly as she looked about the area and arched a brow at the roar of a lion, before she eyed the charmer, “An interesting business and those with skill, though I am more interested in your own skill – maybe another time I shall see the chaos the Temple of Set could amass.”
“My name is Mafdet, I wish to employ your skills and if you’re interested in assisting me you will find yourself well rewarded.” A small smile etched her face as she continued, “Meet me at the House of Pleasure tonight, after your show – I will await you there to discuss the terms of our arrangement as well as payment.”

Kesi wrinkled her nose. Unnerve her? There were only two things that could ever do that. The first was tight spaces, Kesi had such an intense fear of that. They were weird, and unnatural, and scary. She didn’t like that. No tight spaces for her! But the second, and perhaps most unnerving of all, was disappointing her brother. (Oh, horses also made her uncomfortable, but that was a subject for another day.)
The fact of the matter was, this woman wasn’t unnerving. She was, however, confusing. Why was she interested in Kesi’s skill? She was an incredible snake charmer, able to bend the will of even the most unruly of snakes, trapping them within her song. But aside from entertainment (or people confusing her as a whore, which offended the girl very much) no one truly found an interest in her skill. The prospect intrigued Kesi, the thought of money even more so. She would be willing to listen to this stranger this… Mafdet. (Why offer her name? Names were useless and Kesi would most likely forget it anyhow.) She had nothing to lose.
But Mafdet continued to speak. A frown etched on Kesi’s face. “I’m not a whore.” She said plain and simple. There was no need to mince words. “Also even if I were, I’m not really interested in women. Sorry, Miss.” Kesi shook her head. Was it the way she moved with the snakes? Maybe that was too alluring. Kesi would have to work on that. She wanted to draw the crowd, but she certainly didn’t want to seduce them. That was for the other women of the circus. Kesi was more than fine sleeping with Nem and that was it. Even if it were for money, it wouldn’t be worth it. Plus, Nem might be mad. She didn’t know, maybe she should ask…
“I’m sorry, Miss, I have no interest going to a whore house. But… well, we have whores here. One of them might be willing to… lay with a woman.” That was a dangerous statement, and Kesi did not know if one of the whores would be willing to risk their life. Sleeping with the same gender was punishable by death, and Kesi would not protect a whore if they made that idiotic mistake. That was by their decision. Kesi would never ask the women here to do that, nor did she suspect would Nem. It would be a waste of an investment, and then the Tempest of Set would have to look for a replacement. That sounded far too tedious.
Kesi gave a little shrug and gestured further into the circus. “The festivities truly begin at night, but should you require it I could scrounge up some of our women. There may be a man too that would be interested, should that be your desire.” Never would Kesi think that it was her snake charming abilities be of interest to the stranger, even more so when paired with the House of Pleasure. That sounded so dirty. Why would she want to go there anyway?

Mafdet turned up her nose at the woman’s ill-informed response. The woman clearly misunderstood the opportunity that was presented to her, so much that it was insulting for Mafdet to even continue the conversation. Although, it would not be the first time someone deflected a request from Mafdet with the use of her image – no one said it was going to be easy for a poor whore made into rich woman to be treated fairly. If it was not an intentional jab of her appearance, it had to be that the woman had to be genuinely confused – Mafdet hoped for the latter. Although, it showed that the woman had no idea how women are really recruited into pleasure houses – Mafdet was born into one, so she knew.
Despite the obvious disapproved expression, Mafdet responded calmly, “Clearly, there is a misunderstanding – I hold the intentions of optioning you a job for your skills, in, snake charming.” Mafdet said as she eyed the woman up and down, her tone was sharp as she spoke, “Already, you are up to a great start with your prior comments,” The Lady said dryly, before she continued, “I can assure you, I would not travel all this way to ask for a fuck from a stranger, much less… in this fashion.”
It was almost laughable that Mafdet was still in this situation, but still she would much rather pay someone to charm her a snake, then to also de-venom that same snake. The only thing Mafdet hoped for was that her time was not to be wasted, and now the woman before her looked to be a hopeless cause. Although, maybe not, Mafdet still hoped she could arrange a deal with the woman to get things going, because the venom was needed for another client – it would be bad business to keep a customer waiting. “I will forgive the impudent and completely inaccurate accusation that I was offering sex to another woman – for the simple fact that I am willing to pay you to charm a snake for me.”
“If you do not wish to come because the location is a Pleasure House, then miss out on your opportunity to make more than what you’re making now,” Mafdet continued, “If you’re curious to know more, I told you where to find me.”
Promptly, Mafdet gathered her kalasaris as she made her way to leave the snake charmer to her business.

Kesi didn’t understand how it was impudent or an accusation. She told her to go to a sex house. That’s a weird thing to say. And Kesi works at a circus, she sees weird things all the time. But it was unusual things that drew Kesi in the most. For normalcy was boring. It was stagnant. It was against all that Kesi was. She was a being of chaos, of difference. And this was why, despite the woman’s odd request and abrasive manner, was Kesi intrigued. For why have a meeting at a pleasure house if no pleasure would be involved? And what was it that a woman who worked at (or owned?) the House of Pleasure want with a snake charmer. Kesi certainly wasn’t going to charm and men’s snakes, that was reserved for her brother. Perhaps the woman had a fetish with such creatures.
Or perhaps there was more to the story than Kesi could know.
It didn’t much matter. She did not allow her mind to think of it much more. Not until evening fell and Kesi was reminded of the woman once again. She did not work this night, one of her rare evenings off. Her snakes were resting after a busy day, and she had already extracted venom from the scorpions and spiders in her care. Kesi would typically take this evening to run around. She would look for mischief or fun. So what better than for her to go to the whore house? She had never been. It sounded… scandalous.
It was not too hard to find. Though it felt weird walking in. She wasn’t about to get knocked out and kidnapped right? Because Kesi would kill them. And… wait, that sounded like a lot of fun. She hoped this was some weird trap. She could stab them and it’ll be justified and her brother couldn’t get mad at her for that! Kesi was tricked! Bamboozled! Hoodwinked!
But no one popped out. There was no strangers attempting to grapple the girl. There was no one trying to knock her out. There really wasn’t much of anything. Boring. Kesi thought to herself glumly. But at least she could figure out why she was called here. Hopefully it was worth her time. Tonight hasn’t been very fun thus far.
“Miss!” Kesi called out, looking for the girl. What was her name again? She knew she would forget. Names and Kesi were awful things. She at least remembered faces quite well. So she would be able to recognize the weird lady when she walked out at her.
Kesi rocked back and forth on her feet and waited by the entrance. This had better be worth her time. At least… she could now say she knew what the inside of a pleasure house looked like. It was… something, alright.

The House of Pleasure was owned by Mafdet, often nicknamed the Lady of Pleasure. Due to her long history within a Pleasure House, Mafdet knew how it should be run and more importantly, how to keep employees as well as customers. Several women who worked for Mafdet were cherry-picked and experienced, what Mafdet had to do was pimp them from other houses – problematic, but worth the investment. Mafdet was a woman of constant flow of income, she was wealthy and did not hide it, because she has worked hard for what she has acquired.
The House of Pleasure was just one avenue of income for the Lady, though she also dealt in the handling as well as smuggling of contraband from ports of Egypt to Grecian territories. Mafdet have several inquiries and recently a request of a certain kind of venom forced her to find a specific vendor. The Bazaar would have been an interesting place to look, but Mafdet knew better than to publicly ask for just the venom instead of the snake.
Cobra were a popular source for venom, but a species of cobra can spit their venom into the eyes of their prey or predators. The venom will get into the system through the eyes and cause blindness, which was sometimes the goal, but Mafdet was not sure entirely what the venom would be used for – she also does not care. Mafdet’s only part to play would be to supply the venom and receive her payment, only now she has to share that payment with the prospective vendor. Mafdet met one earlier today, a cobra tamer, but not the most… polite nor professional. Although, a tamer would be better to get what she needed and would take a little more than what she seen earlier to scare Lady Mafdet.
Currently, Mafdet walked her House as she observed the rooms, and smiled at the gratification of her patrons. Mafdet waited patiently for the woman to show and once she did, the Lady got word from one of her employees. Anket came up to Mafdet, “Lady Mafdet, there is a strange woman here… I thought you should know.” Mafdet looked at the woman with a curious gaze, before she nodded in confirmation, “Awe yes, I was meeting someone today, she must be it. Thank you, be on your way.”
Mafdet made way towards the entrance of her establishment to find the woman she spoke to earlier standing around. The Lady spoke, “Welcome to the House of Pleasure, so glad you can make it – we spoke earlier…” Mafdet turned halfway into her establishment with a hand leading inside, “Follow me to my quarters, so we may speak more in private.”

Kesi didn’t much like this place. This was all really odd to her. She wanted to go back to the circus now. But then again- Kesi being the agent of chaos that she was decided to follow Mafdet. She knew it would probably have been wiser to just turn on her heel and return to the circus, or even smarter yet to not come at all. Kesi, however, did appreciate the oddity of the situation, and she was never afraid of the abnormal. Besides, she knew exactly where the daggers were stashed on her body should she find the need to defend herself.
For a brief second Kesi wondered what Nem would think if he knew she was here. Would he think he was cheating on her? The women in the pleasure house were quite beautiful, but Kesi only had eyes for Nem. Did he think she was going of to do business behind his back? Technically she was hearing a proposition from the woman, so that was sort of true. She just hoped Nem wouldn’t think she was looking for another job. That would be awkward to explain, and the thought of lying with someone other than Nem made Kesi want to drink the poisons she created. Luckily, none of this mattered, for no one knew she was here. Kesi didn’t think to mention it to anyone.
Her thoughts were cut short when the woman finally arrived. That was good, she was starting to feel silly wandering around this place. “I know we talked. It was only a few hours ago. I’m not forgetful,” Kesi said to the woman’s words. She just shrugged and followed her back to her quarters. She hoped that this wasn’t some elaborate trap. She half expected someone to spring from behind the door and snatch her. But that didn’t happen, which was good. That would have made this whole trip a hassle. At least she’d get a good fight out of it though. And blood. Kesi really, really liked blood.
There were many words to describe her. Weird was one of them. Excitable was another. But one word that would never describe Kesi was patient. So now in her quarters (which were admittedly very nice. Especially for someone who travels in the circus. Was this what it was like having a permanate location? It had been far too long for Kesi to remember that.) Kesi stared back at Mafdet, crossing her arms. “Now, will you let me know your request?” She was interested in Kesi’s skill, whatever that meant.
