Anxiety and Marietta went hand in hand. There was never a day where the young Lady was not nervous about something. She was scared of most things, conflict, crowds, and sometimes even darkness. She was a coward, even if she would put on a face and pretend as if everything was alright. The one thing that nearly never brought Marietta any sort of anxiety was her family. They were the people that brought her the most comfort. They were the people that filled her heart with love and joy. They were her comfort in times of stress, and the only ones she ever truly needed.
But today her family was the source of her nervousness. The sister she was closest to, Evi, was a great source of tension. She was squeezing at Marietta’s heart. She wished she could read her sister’s mind. Adre was a good person, and Marietta knew they had gotten along in the past. But back then she was just a child, they both practically were. Adre wasn’t a prospective love interest to any of the Antonis girls. He was just a fun, kind person that got along with near everyone.
What if Evi didn’t think he was good enough for her sister? What if she found the pairing to be odd? Marietta was fairly responsible and shy, and Adre was the exact opposite. What if Evi thought that Adre wouldn’t be able to handle being with an Antonis? Or that he wouldn’t be able to support Marietta if the relationship ever were to go past courting.
Evi was a kind girl who supported her sister, even when Marietta was a nagging, judgemental, overly protective sibling. But if she didn’t support this relationship… Marietta didn’t know what she would do. Evi’s opinion mattered to her more than anyone else’s. If Sanasa or Hebe didn’t like him, she would ignore them. If her parents disapproved, Marietta would argue. But if Evi didn’t like Adre as a partner for her? Would she fight for Adre or would she relent to her younger sister? Evi knew Marietta better than anyone on this planet. Even if she was younger, she had the foresight to know what would not be good for her elder sister. And what if Adre made a fool of himself? Was there a chance he wouldn’t take this meeting seriously?
The afternoon sky was high in the sky when the two sisters made their way towards the Central Plateía. Marietta chittered away nervously, about the weather, about her art, never stopping for even a breath of air. This was unusual for the girl who very much enjoyed silence. Silence, however, would only bring her thoughts to the foreground, something she very much didn’t want to endure.
“Oh he makes me so happy, Evi.” Marietta fawned over Adre. “Well, he embarrasses me sometimes. He can make me blush very easily. And he can make me nervous. But that’s good right? The fluttering in one’s stomach and the pounding of the heart? And he’s so handsome, Evi. Honestly, I pale in comparison to him. And this isn’t even me being critical of my own beauty, he’s just on a league of his own…”
Marietta bit her lip as her and her sister finally arrived to the destination. How would Adre look today? She liked him in whatever outfit, but his noble attire would be much better suited for this meeting. This was important, his very first trial in dating an Antonis girl, and perhaps his most perilous. Though, arguably, less intimidating for him than exchanging words with her father and mother. Still, it was important, and she needed him to be perfect.

It was a funny little thing, love. It was an even funnier thing, irony.
Evi hadn’t known about Adrestus for long. The man had only recently returned to Athenia after many years living the exciting and adventurous life of a sailor. The two of them had ran into each other recently, and Evi had delighted at being able to catch up with her long lost childhood friend. Adrestus was still the same person he had been back then, except he was taller and his muscles had filled out to make him quite the thing to look at.
But their conversation as they had rambled through the market stalls had reminded Evi of what type of person Adrestus was. He was a true idealist, always looking for the hint of good in even the worst of people. Guided by his principles, rather than logic (like Evi was prone to do), he was truly the best of them, looking towards honour, beauty and virtue when making decisions and performing actions. In some ways, he was the perfect conversationalist: he was just as interested in Evi’s life as Evi had been in his, allowing the conversation to flow freely, and even the silences to feel natural and comfortable.
It was this knowledge of Adrestus, this unwavering belief in who he was as a man, that made Evi’s heart somersault in her chest when Marietta had finally admitted to Evi that she was courting him. The younger of the Antonis sisters didn’t know much about love - her own experiences were rather limited. And she knew even less about an open relationship between two people - her liaison with Elias had, for the most part, been kept secret from the world up until now.
Evi’s first reaction had been one of unending support for Marietta. Her sister deserved someone like Adrestus, so she had no idea why her elder sister was so nervous about the whole thing. But the girl had to hide her smile at the irony of the situation. Evi wanted so much to support Marietta in her choices, but Marietta hadn’t offered that same support when she had confronted Elias and Evi after her night spent in Lyncestia. Evi, of course, said none of this to her sister, but she did revel in the irony it presented.
“I’m glad of it, sister,” she responded with a giggle and a playful roll of her eyes. It was like she sat next to a completely different person, given the giddy way she was talking about her new love. “Adrestus is a good man, I am happy he has returned for long enough for your childhood friendship to evolve into something else.” She said nothing of his station - Marietta was the second daughter of Alehandros of Antonis. As long as Sanasa married well, it didn’t really matter what subsequent daughters did. Not that she thought of Adrestus as ‘less than’ her station. But he wasn’t of royal blood.
“I don’t understand your nervousness. What are you expecting? I have nothing but a deep love for Adrestus - platonic, of course, but love nonetheless.” The pair arrived, their carriage pulling to a stop. Evi was the first to exit, instructing the servant at the helm of the carriage to leave; they would be walking home after their meeting with Adrestus. Evi then offered her hand to her sister in case she wanted help exiting the carriage, and turned to search through the Central Plateía for her sister’s new partner. She spied him just a short distance away and nudged her sister before beginning to walk over. “Adrestus, how are you?” She leaned in, aiming to kiss him on each cheek in greeting, “My sister here seems to think you and I will experience a… conflict of opinion. I do hope that will not be the case.”

Adrestus was in noble clothing as he arrived at the central Plateía. His family’s seal visible to all, Adrestus had dressed up for the occasion. With one look you would never have been able to tell he was a sailor- instead, he looked fully what his parents would say like he was born into. He was the heir of his family’s noble house, and for today he wanted to look like it too. Leading up to the day he had already assumed Marietta’s anxiety, and while he didn’t understand it, he didn’t want to disappoint her. Her sister Evi was a friend of his, and while they had only just caught up with each other, Adrestus wanted to make a good impression. He didn’t know fully of what Evi’s reaction would be to him courting her sister, but he hoped for the positive. He struck a smile as he glanced around, before finally seeing the royal sisters.
He moved casually over towards Marietta and Evi, bowing his head respectfully. He stepped towards Marietta, his eyes gleaming in happiness. He opened his mouth to greet them, but stopped himself when he heard Evi speak first. He looked over towards Marietta’s younger sister, who was also his friend. “I am well, Evi, how are you faring?” He asked calmly, his tone light and cheerful. He narrowed his eyes and cocked his head to the side as he became confused with her next words. “Conflict? Adrestus started, looking concerned and his expression basically had a question mark on it. “Why would we have a conflict Evi?” He blinked and looked over at Marietta, as if that would help ease his confusion. He turned his head back towards Evi, feeling his heart pounding within him. Had things changed now he wished to court Marietta. “Is there a problem?” He asked cautiously, his eyes flickering over the two royals.
After a moment passed, Adrestus let out a soft sigh. “If this is about Marietta and me… Evi you have nothing to worry about.” He spoke to reassure her. “I care for Marietta and I will protect her with my life, I want the best for her as I am sure you do too.” He kept his eyes on Evi, wanting to know her reaction to his words. “I adore her.” He turned his head back and looked over at Marietta. Suddenly, he reached carefully towards her and took Marietta’s hand. “I haven’t had a chance to properly greet you,” He said softly, before leaning towards the back of her hand, and kissing it. “Good afternoon. You look beautiful as usual, Marietta.” He knew it would make her blush- and every time it made his heart soar to see it. He loved to give her attention. He glanced over towards Evi. “If you do not agree with this match, however, I will respect your opinion, Evi. I will say, though, I am willing to do whatever it takes.” Hopefully, it was enough. “I mean that.”

Marietta was always nervous, Evi knew this. However, when she called out her sister’s nerves, a deep blush raised to her face. She lightly swatted her sister’s shoulder. “Oh shush,” She shook her head. Nevertheless, she was relieved to hear the words come from her sister’s mouth. It was words that she needed to hear, and yet she still had this tiny bit of nervousness. Marietta could only truly feel comfortable after the day was over and no issues came out of this. The relationship was still so fresh, and should Evi show even the slightest bit of disapproval Marietta would end it, trusting her sister’s opinion above all else. Though… she truly hoped that wasn’t the case. Adrestus was so lovely.
And then at Adrestus’s words Marietta blushed even brighter, though no hiccups were to be had. Even a simple kiss to her hand was enough to give her flutterings in her stomach, though she yearned for the taste of his lips so much more. That, however, could be left for a day that her little sister wasn’t around. The only kiss Evi or any of her siblings would see is at their wedding… should that ever happen. Marietta wasn’t allowing herself to get too caught up in fantasies. She was, after all, fairly practical.
She let out a girlish giggle, and despite her red face her lips were pulled into a wide beam. She had never felt so happy in her life, and it was all thanks to Adrestus. “I didn’t necessarily say conflict, Evi.” Marietta gave her sister a look and a raised brow, though the smile betrayed any ploy of playing mad. “I don’t think there will be conflict at all. There’s nothing to not like about you, Adre.”
Marietta moved from her sister’s side to instead be by Adrestus’s side. She chewed her lip nervously. “You look quite handsome today.” She complimented back. He was wearing his noble attire that Marietta loved so much on him. It’s not as if she had any ill opinion of his sailing clothes, in fact they could be quite… sexy... but the noble clothes gave him an aura of confidence that drew the young Lady in. He was regal, he was handsome, and he was her’s. Oh the women were going to be so jealous when it truly became public the pair were dating. Station aside, Adrestus was handsome and already a decorated adventurer. She would be the talk of the court and so would he. Courting a lower noble among the royals may be scandalous, but for him all of Athenia would be jealous. And those who lusted after Adrestus, of which Marietta was sure there would be many, would look at her with dagger filled gazes. And for the first time ever, Marietta would thrive at being given those stares, knowing Adrestus was by her side.
“She won’t disagree with the match, dear.” Marietta put a hand on his shoulder. “There’s nothing to disagree with. Isn’t that right Evi?” Her eyes went back to her sister, shining with pure joy.

“I was teasing, you brilliant fool,” Evi said, pulling away from her friend with a wide smile, “I was merely laughing at the fact that Marietta doesn’t think I will approve of you and her courting each other. And it seems you think I will disapprove too. It makes me wonder why you think I would… do I come across as someone who cares all that much for a class divide?” Adrestus had no royal blood flowing through his veins, as far as Evi knew, but he was still a noble, and he was more than a suitable match for Evi’s sister.
It hurt Evi a little that both of them seemed more than a little nervous about this meeting. But she hid it well behind a bright smile. She wasn’t one to judge others for who they fell in love with, and the way Marietta had talked about Adrestus made it clear that love was blossoming between them. “Well, that is something I am very pleased to hear, if for no other reason than to know my dear sister will be well looked after while you are around.” She really did think the pair were well suited - Marietta with her quiet, unassuming ways, and Adrestus with his large heart and genuine compassion which he clearly had for Marietta.
Though it did beg the question… Adrestus’ heart belonged to the seas. He was here because his father had asked him to return and be at court, but would that last? Would he eventually be returning to his ships and adventures on the oceans? What would happen to Marietta if he did? Evi couldn’t see Marietta enjoying a life at sea; Marietta was not known for her like of outward bound pursuits. Gods, the girl could barely stand to be on the back of a horse, let alone on a rocky boat in the middle of the ocean. And Evi knew, though Adrestus had refused to admit it, that his life wasn’t always safe. Evi couldn’t bare the thought of her sister being in any form of danger. And she couldn’t see Marietta enjoying any time apart from her husband… if they were to marry and he left her to return to the sea.
“Adrestus…” Evi began, her smile slipping a little as she watched the pair greet each other, “What happens if you return to sea? Do you have any intentions to be a sailor again? You’ve been gone for… what? Ten years? And now you’re back, but… are you planning on leaving again?” She really didn’t think it would work properly between Marietta and Adrestus if he was going to be gone for most of their relationship. She didn’t say it outright, but left the other two to infer what she meant from her question.

Adrestus let out a chuckle as Evi spoke, and he glanced over at Marietta. “Thank you, Marietta,” He said softly, before glancing back at Marietta’s sister. “No, I didn’t think you would, Evi. You know how Marietta gets though, I was trying to show that she doesn’t have anything to worry about.” He smiled, feeling his body relax as Evi confirmed that she was okay with the match. He still felt that he needed to impress her in order for Marietta to have some comfort in the situation- though they both knew the main person he had to impress was Lord Alehandros. That would come at a later time. “You don’t come across that way at all.” He knew Evi wouldn’t care about class. He glanced towards Marietta and stepped closer to her, glancing her over like she was some goddess standing before him. His gaze was interrupted by Evi, and he gave her a nod. “Of course.” His voice was full of confidence. “There is nothing I wouldn’t do to make Marietta happy and protected.” His voice fell as if he was making an announcement, and it was completely genuine. Adrestus was known to put his life on the line for those he cared about- he wouldn’t hesitate to do it again. “That goes for you too, and the rest of the Antonis family.” Marietta’s family was important to Marietta, and therefore it was important to him, simple as that. “Whatever you need, just let me know.” He looked over at Evi’s eyes, just to make sure she knew he was serious.
The conversation turned more serious, and he looked away for a moment. He instinctively pulled her arm around Marietta, not tightly but enough for Marietta to notice it was there. “My sea life was always going to change once I arrived home again.” He confessed, before looking back at Evi. His expression was filled with thought, knowing what he said would be very important to any Antonis member. “Yes, I was gone for many years, but I won’t be able to do that again- even if I wasn’t courting. From now on I will be landlocked more than I will be able to be on my ship. The sea is still a part of me, and I cannot tell you that I will stop traveling… but it will be much less, and for much less time.” He was saddened by that fact, and his heart still hurt, knowing that he probably wouldn’t be able to look for his dear friend that was still lost. “My family needs me here, and so does Marietta, and I understand that.” He wasn’t ignorant. Adrestus understood being needed. “He glanced over at Marietta. “Maybe I can take you on some trips with me, yes?” He really wanted to show her the sea life, that he had come to adore. It was a part of him that she hadn’t even seen yet.
“My friend Timaeus of Valaoritis is from Colchis and is going to war. He may never come back. Even in that case, I’d rather be with Marietta as much as I can and make her as happy as she can be with the time I had. Fortunately, right now we only have my business and short trips to worry about. War is so much more unpredictable.” Adrestus let out a sigh. “There are pirates on the seas, but…” He smiled. “There are ways of dealing with them.” Of course, Athenia going to war was always a possibility, but he doubted it wouldn’t be any time soon considering the state of the kingdom. “And, again, as I told you earlier Evi, I have no plans to leave Athenia for several months, or even a year. It depends on what happens.” He gave them both a smile. “Plus, Marietta is a good distraction away from the sea.” Just like Tim said, distractions were what he needed while he dealt with things for his family. He tightened his arm around Marietta, pulling her closer. “Right Marietta? Huge distraction.”

Her sister was asking relevant questions, and one that was a fear to Marietta. She was ready to dive into the relationship headfirst, but the thought that at any moment Adrestus would run away to the sea made her sick. The sea would always be his true love, would it not? She could not provide the excitement that a life abroad could, nor would his life married to a royal and running a barony be something that he would ever truly desire. All the feelings the pair had was fresh and new, but as time passed would they fade? Every time Adrestus would look out to the sea, would he be fighting the desire to run away from it all? Run away from Marietta?
But she could not allow to think such dreary thoughts. Adrestus was here, today, and that was all that mattered. And he was saying everything that Marietta wanted to hear. He understood just how important the Antonis family was. They are, and forever will be, her first priority. Nothing could tear her away from family, no matter how handsome and kind the man. Her parents, her cousins, her sisters, they were always on the forefront of her mind to the point that Marietta would die just to see everyone happy, safe, and healthy.
And trips were not out of the question. Marietta dreamed of seeing the world, and when he offered her a chance to go with him, her smile grew wide and she nodded. Perhaps it was a pipe dream. Perhaps Marietta would be stuck in Athenia for the rest of her life. But maybe, just maybe, she could go to Colchis, or Taengea, or even farther! Just for a while… just to see what lied beyond the kingdom.
When he spoke of his friend, Marietta tilted her head. “Sofia met a man from Colchis once. Awful, terrible man.” She couldn’t remember his name. Did her friend ever tell her? “I don’t anger often. He would cause me to be angry though. It is good we will never meet.” What was the name…?
Before she could ponder further, she felt his arm tighten and Marietta drew close to Adrestus. Immediately her thoughts vanished, filled instead by the man beside him. She giggled and nodded, “Just as big as you are.”
If Marietta saw this display in her sisters, she would grow ill. And truthfully Marietta wasn’t one for public displays (despite their first kiss, not that she would ever tell that to anyone in the family) but right now she was so filled with joy. Her heartbeat wildly whenever he drew near, and Marietta truly felt blessed as if Aphrodite united the pair, gazing upon them with approval. Her eyes went back to her sister and she blushed, stepping slightly away from Adre. “I’m sorry, Evi, I seemed to have lost myself for a moment.” She cleared her throat, taking another step back. “You didn’t come to see your sister flutter her eyelashes. Shall we continue this walk? It’s quite the beautiful day, we shouldn’t waste it.”

The two of them looked happy together, and Marietta fit well under Adrestus’ arm. It was pleasing to Evi to see her sister so at ease and happy whilst in the arms of a man. Marietta had always been so closed off from the world, so shy and unsure of almost everything and everyone that it was hard to see her relaxing around a member of the opposite sex, much less one whom she was courting. The younger of the sisters smiled at the sight, just taking a moment to enjoy the view and bask in her sister’s happiness.
Marietta and Evi were closest of the four Antonis sisters, and it was no lie to say that Evi desperately wanted her older sister to be happy. She seemed to pick a worthy match too. Adrestus wouldn’t have been good enough for the likes of Sanasa, as firstborn daughter of Alehandros of Antonis… but for any subsequent daughter, he was of noble blood and a fine match for any of them. She was more than a little glad they had found one another. She wondered if they would end up married; Marietta didn’t seem the type to date for the sake of dating, and nor did Adrestus, for that matter.
And… Evi knew her mind kept bringing her back to this, but they just looked so perfectly content with each other.
When Adrestus talked of being landlocked, Evi’s expression was one of sadness and pity. She could tell how much the sea meant to Adrestus, and it was hard to listen to him talk of it like a lost child he would rarely be able to see again. “I’m sorry to hear that, Adrestus,” she replied, and she meant it. “I would imagine, given the choice, you would prefer to stay at sea for the rest of your life.” Despite this, she was glad that Adrestus had said what he had: it was nice to know that Marietta wasn’t doomed to spend the rest of her life kissing goodbye a man who would be gone for months at a time… or worse, waiting and watching for a man who might never come home, should the worst happen.
“Yes, well… as long as you have no plans of sailing off to war.” She muttered under her breath so neither of the pair could hear her. But when he asked Marietta if she would like to take a trip or two with him, Evi was reminded of Adrestus’ earlier offer to her, “Ah, now that’s not fair, you’ve already promised to take us both on a trip - you know how I should love to see some of the world.” Now that Evi was sure Marietta wasn’t going to be abandoned at the drop of a hat, she was happy to allow conversation to take a lighter turn. “Or was that just an empty promise that you made?”

Marietta was so relieved all this was going well. The entire time she worried that Evi would find every flaw with Adrestus, that she would convince Marietta that this was a mistake. But Evi saw Adre for the man that Marietta saw: Someone good, kind, and honest.
He won’t ever leave. Evi saw this too now, Marietta was sure. He was here to learn what it means to be a noble, an heir. Marietta believed every word from his mouth, she had no reason to doubt otherwise. He was honest, he was good and this was… it. Marietta was confident in this. Adrestus brought another side of Marietta no man could previously. He made her happier, lighter, giggly, girlish. He made her heartbeat not just of nerves… but of excitement. And the fact that Evi approved of Marietta sealed it in her mind. There was no going back now. She was falling for Adrestus, faster than she had expected. She was his.
“Oh yes! A trip the three of us to see the world!” Marietta’s eyes were shining just at the thought. Imagine the visages she could paint with the two people in the world she cared about most. Woah, Marietta thought suddenly. Two people she cared about most? Already Adrestus was up there? Past Hebe, Sanasa, and her parents? Sofia and Elias? Adrestus so quickly wormed his way into Marietta’s heart, rekindling their childhood friendship and stroking that flame to one of greater passion.
She wanted to kiss him all over again, but that would be completely uncouth to do in front of her younger sister. Marietta had better class than that. But to say Marietta had fallen for him, so completely and irrevocably, would be an understatement. With everything that was going wrong in Athenia, this was the one thing she felt certain was right.
But she was getting ahead of herself. They were young yet, and Adrestus still had much to learn before Marietta could comfortably bring him to meet her mother and father. He would have to grow up, both of them would, before she could maturely continue their relationship. Something that she was sure will happen.
He won’t be leaving me for the sea. She thought again, her heart skipping a beat. Marietta was a worthy enough distraction, as he said. Things will go perfectly. And Adrestus would become one of the family one day. Maybe today was the start of just that.
“Oh, but enough of the future.” Marietta laughed. She linked her sister’s arm with her’s. “Let’s go find something to eat and enjoy this day, shall we?” After all, you never knew what was just beyond the horizon.
