Essa’s heart still seemed to stop every time she thought about the fire. It was just like Imeeya to run straight into it. She knew it came from a good place - she cared about the people and simply wanted to help. Yet when she thought about how close she had come to losing her sister... it haunted her still.
She had been reluctant to leave her sister’s side at all those first days. Even when she slept. As though she might slip away as soon as her back was turned. After all, when Imeeya had gone out that day, she had never expected that she might never come home. That thought had never even crossed her mind before. She had never imagined a life without her sister, and she never wanted to. Yet now, the thought was in her mind.
It was for that reason that she had made a point to learn more about her sister’s savior. She wanted to thank him in a way that he would most appreciate. Gifts were meant to be selected with care. She learned his favored weapon was his Xiphos. But she didn’t want to meet him. Not until her commissioned piece was ready to present.
Today was that day.
She had just picked up the xiphos she’d requested from the blacksmith, with the intent to find Lieutenant Maximus. She carried the blade sheathed and wrapped in cloth to hide the hilt. It was shaped as the head of a dragon - the emblem of Drakos. She had had it set with jewels from her family’s mines - emeralds and sapphires. The blade was engraved with prayer to Ares to strengthen and protect he who wielded the blade. The sheathe itself was just as carefully crafted as the sword itself. The deep brown leather was decorated with a flame-like pattern and tipped in the same gilded metal as the handle, designed to appear as a dragon's tail. It was as grand a blade as she had ever seen, and even so, it seemed too little to equate with her sister’s very life. Imeeya was more precious to her than all her family’s wealth. One gift, no matter how extravagant it may be, could never balance the scales for what he had done for her family.
Essa moved through the streets with head held high, searching for the face of the young freshly minted Lieutenant. She knew he frequented the marketplace - she had glimpsed him there before. Naturally, he knew nothing of her, so its not as though he would recognize her.
Her pale green peplos contrasted nicely with the cream linen of her chiton beneath it. Her hair was done in a more casual series of braids, leaving most of her long dark hair pulled up. Her jewelry was modest as well, wearing a bracelet of a golden leaf that wrapped around her arm and a simple peridot pendent. She was never the sort to try to stand out in a crowd, but she was hardly one to neglect her appearance.
At last her deep hazel eyes widened as she caught sight of the man she was looking for.
“Lieutenant Maximus of Laconia?” she asked softly as she approached him, waiting for confirmation before continuing.
“Greetings. I am Lady Essa of Drakos. I have come to thank you for your admirable service to my home and reward you for all you’ve done for my family.” She held out the cloth-wrapped sword, waiting for him to take it. She couldn’t hold back the tears that sprang into her eyes as she continued to address him.
“Truly, words nor gifts could never fully show the depth of my gratitude to you. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.”

Maximus had been waiting in the Agora for hours, he wanted to make sure that he was arrived on time though the young man thought he overdid it arriving at the crack of dawn. A few days ago, Maximus received a letter that had the Drakos seal on. Much to Maximus' surprise, it wasn't from Immeya but from her younger sister: Essa of Drakos. The young girl wasn't there when Maximus was at their estate and it wasn't often that a noble would even be out in public so Maximus wasn't aware that Immeya had a sister. Essa's letter explained that she wanted to thank Maximus personally for helping rescuing her older sister and that she had a gift waiting for him at the Agora.
The young man eagerly wrote to her, saying that it was a soldier's duty to protect the people. It was something that Maximus truly believed but the person in question was nobility. It's not often that a soldier gets to have a personal conversation with them. Celine does it all the time being the daughter of the master of whispers though she says she finds it boring. Essa wrote back saying to meet her in three days which the young man spent them wondering what kind of gift would she give Maximus. A marriage to a lesser noble? Doubtful Essa is a child who doesn't have any real power like that? Gold? Well Maximus could always use extra gold. While a Lieutant gets a pay raise, a soldier's pay is meager.
It would be nice though to get some coin in order to buy more unusual trinkets from the lands afar. It was nice for Maximus to get recognition by a major Colchian nobility but he tried to stay away from them at times. With the nobility came politics and politics is just too complicated for Maximus to handle. There was just too many underhanded and dishonorable that politicians love to employ it was not an even playing field. Everyone is a pawn for somebody and Maximus just wants to do his duty and not play the game.
Sighing, Maximus stood at attention when he saw Essa approaching him. His face was unmoving though he did give the young girl a smile. "Thank you my lady," Maximus said giving her bow his eyes darted everywhere watching the sword wrapped in black cloth. It was in Essa's small hands as the young man took from her.
"It feels light my lady," there was always a weight to weapons but with this sword it was like lifting paper. Now curious, Maximus unwrapped the cloth revealing a Kopis embeded with jewelry rubies and emeralds glistened against the sun. Maximus' eyebrows rose up as he saw the hilt shaped into the head of a Dragon: The Drakos family symbol.
"I- I," This gift was incredible! Better than a marriage or gold a weapon one that can be used to protect others. Maximus unsheathed the Kopis as the blade came out the sound singing against the wind. It was pale milk glass alive with light the moment Maximus touched the blade he felt a sharp sting causing his finger to bleed almost immediately. It was light yet effective, the young man also spotted words carved on to the blade but with the sun's rays it was hard to make out the words. He'll have to look at it later.
"I don't know what to say Lady Essa," Maximus said looking at her. "I was only doing my job as a soldier."

"I don't know what to say Lady Essa," Maximus said looking at her. "I was only doing my job as a soldier."
Her nerves calmed slightly as he offered her a smile in return. She had never actually met the young soldier before, so she hadn’t been sure what to expect. Some could be so stoic, like her cousin. While she loved all her family, she always felt like she annoyed Vangelis with all her chatter and affection. Yet she had met soldiers who were quite charismatic as well. It seemed that the Lieutenant was at least friendly, which made her a little more comfortable.
“Truly, it was the least I could do. And I know you must have far more important duties to tend to, so I apologize for taking your time and making you wait,” she began, her smile turning a little nervous as she addressed his thanks. She worried her lower lip slightly as he accepted the gift and began to remove the cloth. “I hope it is to your liking. If not, I’m more than happy to return to the blacksmith until you’re satisfied.”
She watched as he examined the blade, fearing it wasn’t to his taste but he was too afraid to offend her. He unsheathed it then, examining it, testing the edge. All the while it took all her self restraint to avoid bouncing anxiously on her feet. Did he hate it? Had she made an error?
At last he spoke, and she gave him a shy smile. “You take your duty seriously,” she said softly, taking him in. “Perhaps that is so, and I commend you on expecting no reward for your actions. However, I cannot stand by and do nothing. I thought I lost my sister once - only for a few moments, but those were the worst of my life by far. Your actions prevented me from feeling that same terrible loss for the rest of my days. Nothing will ever be enough to repay that debt. So I am afraid that I cannot accept any protests to the contrary.”
She glanced back at the blade he held in his hands. “It is my hope that this gift might assist you in aiding many more in your time as a soldier, and that you will be reminded of my gratitude and your valiant deeds whenever you wield it. That perhaps it may be a good omen of sort to protect you in your duty.”
