Having struggled his way through the dawn torture Nike had assigned to him that day, Silanos had limped wearily back into the order house to wash and change. He was a sweaty mess, and had would definitely be feeling the kick to the thigh from the last bout of hand to hand - or should that be foot to leg?- fighting, but still, the Valaoritis lord felt a mild sense of accomplishment. Almost certain that he wasn’t imagining it, there was a definite feeling like the gruelling physical workouts were getting a little easier. He didn’t puke so often. That was good, right?
As he hobbled through what served as a kitchen for the home of the red knights, the cook brandished a piece of parchment at him. “Letter from the Kotas for you” the man said, barely sparing the young lord a glance. Silanos had stopped drawing curious looks now. There under the orders of the Crown Prince, people either didn’t care why, or had at least stopped wondering. Sil was glad. He took the paper with a nod, breaking the seal as he trudged back to his accomodations and frowning slightly at the typically unexplained instruction within.
He was to head to the agora rather than the Kotas manor, and Prince Vangelis had not even deigned to sign the missive, let alone give reason as to why the change in venue. Rolling his eyes, the Valaoritis lord cast the parchment onto his bed, wondering what delights the Stone Prince had conceived for the day.
Of course, there was plenty of amusement to be found at the agora, or roundabouts. Sil knew where to go and who to speak to. The problem was, he wasn’t entirely sure the Kotas Prince knew the meaning of the word amusement. It was one of the reasons they would likely never be friends, Silanos mused, as he hurriedly washed and redressed. That and the small matter of some rather misguided interactions with the Prince’s younger sister. And his sister-in-law.
But, it had been almost a week and Prince Vangelis had not pointed a sword at him again, so Sil - deciding to be optimistic about his situation- resolved that it was progress. Mayhaps the blood general just fancied a bit of shopping. Another dour coloured chiton to add to his collection, or perhaps another blade. He seemed fond of those.
Much as he amused himself with his internal snark, Silanos was still careful not to tarry, and he arrived at the agora when the traders were still setting out their wares. Of course there had not been a time specified, and so he found himself hanging about. Half-tempted to slip off and see if he couldn’t find Estevan and some of his very specific stock, the young lord also did not want to not be where he’d been told to be whenever the Crown Prince arrived. Wasn’t worth the risk. With a long suffering sigh, Sil slouched against the exterior wall of one of the buildings that flanked the square, yawning and idly toeing the dirt as he waited for whatever the day would hold.

Yanni had taken a liking to Silanos of Valaoritis, lucky for the young man who could have been in a lot of trouble had she informed her son or husband of where she had found the boy, he likely would have faced punishment. But she felt for him, the boy seemed misguided, and she had heard the rumours of what his mother’s state was. She wasn’t trying to step in and replaced her by any means, but she thought perhaps a friendly face and a bit of a day off amidst all the chaos of what her son was exposing him to would do him well. And so she had simply stated to her son that she was borrowing Silanos for the day. There was no room for argument, and nor would her son argue over something so small.
She had written to Silanos, purposefully not mentioning who it was that was writing. She wanted to surprise him, assuming that the easier day would be that much more fantastic if he had no idea it was coming.
The Queen was an early riser, and as such she had already been dressed for the day and been working for quite some time now, but now that she had most of her work out of the way, at least for the moment, she planned on simply doing a bit of light shopping, not planning on buying much. Mostly she just felt like some fresh air and a walk would do both of them good.
She approached, having ditched her guards for the moment back at the house, hating that she was forced to have them with her anyways. Yanni spotted Silanos, leaning against a wall and looking completely miserable.
“I hope you have not been waiting long, Lord Silanos.” She called out as she approached, a warm and friendly smile on her face as she did. She was in a good mood so far that day, and the young Lord had made for good company recently. It felt like there was so much tension in her own family, it was hard to find a moment to just feel like a person again, or like a mother. And while she would never admit it to anyone, she knew it was motherly affection she held for the boy. He was about the age of her younger kids, and she missed being able to spend such time with them. It seemed her own children were far too busy to spend an idle day with their mother.
“I have relieved you of your duties to the Crown Prince today. Instead you will be remaining at my side and serving as my escort for the morning, and assisting me with my work later in the day.” She told him, once the greetings and everything had been done. She didn’t think he would argue with it, wandering with the Queen was likely a lot more interesting than what ever Vang had him doing. She could imagine it was a lot of work that Silanos was not used to, if his reputation was anything to believe.

Silanos yawned, watched the hustle and bustle of the early morning agora with a bored sort of disinterest. How nice it would be when on day his time was his own again. There had been no talk of the duration of this punishment of his, and he hadn’t yet dared ask. Prince Vangelis was, as it turned out, not terribly forthcoming when Sil asked questions. Sometimes, when he was feeling particularly bold, Sil would ask them just so he might see the efforts the man had to go to formulate words - a habit so alien to him. That and so he might impress upon the Crown Prince just how unsuited he was to this whole soldiering malarkey. The days to talk Prince Vangelis out of taking him to Egypt were dwindling, and the fact the man had given no indication of changing his mind was worrying.
Perhaps today would be the day? Maybe that was the secret passion of the Crown Prince that would see him drop the stone facade. Maybe the man just liked to shop.
Silanos was disavowed of such an outlandish notion when his gaze fell upon an approaching figure, and whilst it was a Kotas sure enough, it was not the one he expected. Pushing upright from his well-perfect wall slouch, the young lord’s face betrayed his confusion.
“..Not long, your majesty, no” He replied, looking about to see if he had missed Vangelis, or for the queen’s guard. He liked Queen Yanni, after she had not thrown him to the lions after that little miss timed nap. And for whatever reason, she seemed to not dislike him either, which was a pleasant change after her son’s somberness. Still, unless he’d missed some missive about the Kotas family shopping trip, he had no idea about what she was doing here now.
Dipping into a bow as the woman drew close, Silanos’ eyebrows shot up as Yanni went on to reveal her purpose, or rather his purpose, and it was as much as he could do to keep the grin from his face. “ Of course” Because it wasn’t like he got a say on the matter anyway, and honestly, that sounded a lot less arduous than training with Vangelis or standing in any more meetings and being quizzed on what he remembered of them afterwards. It wasn’t quite as good as a day off, but Sil was not going to complain.
“And uh..Prince Vangelis knows where I am?” he ventured, just to be sure he wasn’t going to accidentally fall foul of his self-proclaimed master by obeying the Queen’s request. Once reassured that such was not the case, Silanos relaxed a little. Not a whole lot, but a little. His day was definitely looking up.
“And are you looking for anything in particular, your majesty?” he asked, taking a look around the agora and wondering what the Queen of all people might be in need of.

“And are you looking for anything in particular, your majesty?” he asked, taking a look around the agora and wondering what the Queen of all people might be in need of.
Yanni could see the complete confusion on the man’s face as she approached and the hesitation in his words as he replied to her inquiry on how long he had been waiting. She didn’t blame him, after spending the past how ever many days in the company of Vangelis, it would be a surprise to suddenly see the Queen there instead of the Prince. Hopefully it was good surprise at least, shopping with her was bound to be a lot less physically taxing than training with Vangelis.
She nodded as he asked after Vangelis, and if he knew that Silanos was being commandeered by his mother.
“He has been informed that I am taking charge of you for the day, yes.” She said. She hadn’t asked his permission. She had simply told her son what her plan was for the day, and had sent the letter for Silanos, hoping she would catch him before he had left to find Vangelis or something. Clearly her letter had made it, as he was standing there waiting for her in the exact spot she had told him to meet her at.
She shook her head and motioned for him to walk forward, walking beside him as they headed into the market square where merchants were just starting to set up for the day. Yanni liked to get her day started early, she had so much to do on most days, especially when her husband was away, or when they were preparing for war. She was up early and went to sleep late most days. She had done so for the past thirty something years of her life. Being the Queen meant she was in charge of the Kingdom when her husband was away at war, which seemed like he was more often than not.
“Nothing in particular.” She replied when he asked what she was looking for. She had just decided that she needed a break from work, and it was likely that he wouldn’t mind a break from her son, along with a bit of company. Yanni had to admit that even though she was often surrounded by people, it didn’t always mean that she had much interaction. Sometimes it was just nice to be a person and not just the Queen. It had been a long time since she had felt like anything other than a ruler.
She lead him over to a jewelry merchant who greeted her feverishly, excited by the prospect of the Queen potentially purchasing at his shop. Yanni knew that merchants would often use her name to bring more business, saying that the Queen bought her goods there, and if there were witnesses to the purchase to back up the story, it was better.
She eyed his wares carefully, nothing really catching her eye. Yanni had never been one for jewelry much, aside from her wedding ring and usually some adornment for her hair. Other than that, the only jewelry she really owned was given to her by her husband when their children had been born.
“What do you think of this piece?” She asked, reaching forward to pick up a necklace with a pendant, simply curious as to his tastes. Or if he would even give his real opinion rather than pander to her.

Sil blinked a couple of times at the news that Vangelis knew of this little reassignment, tried not to be amused at the notion of the stone-faced man receiving such news. What the fuck ever, he’d take it. Spending the day carrying shopping bags for the Queen or whatever he was going to be doing was a thousand times preferable to more silence and standing like a doorstop in meetings. He fell easily into step beside the Queen.
She had surprised him that day at the Kotas manor, offering more leniency that he would have expected, and now with this as well, Silanos was coming to think she couldn’t know of his transgressions. Side-eyeing her for a moment, he looked away quickly, because the thought made him somehow uncomfortable. It was quite the novelty, not being automatically in someone’s ill favor, and he didn't want that to change. But it felt a bit like lying at the same time and for some reason, he didn't like the idea that he was being dishonest with the woman beside him.
It was like he’d developed a conscience or something.
Following Queen Yanni’s lead over to a stall where a man was hawking some of the ugliest jewelry he thought he’d ever seen, Silanos looked it over disinterestedly, still thinking about Athanasia and how it was that the Queen did not know. He couldn’t tell her. That would be dumb, wouldn’t it? Because, whichever way he spun it, his conduct toward the Princess had been pretty poor. It was irritatingly difficult to deny when he was sober and in posession of his right mind. More than once he’d thought about trying to find Asia to offer a real apology, face to face, but his nerve had failed him so far. Maybe he should..
"What do you think of this piece?"
Caught out then, when Yanni called his attention to a necklace she was looking at, asking for his opinion of all things, Silanos hesitated. Now was one of the moments he should probably lie and say that she had good taste or something. But when Sil looked again at the thing she motioned to, his face gave away his true opinion before he’d even opened his mouth.
“Uh...it’s an unusual coloured stone” he managed after a moment, before his mouth ran away with him “What even is that?” It was a murky green-brown, sort of stagnant water colour. A bit like camel dung.
Silanos looked hastily at the Queen to ensure she hadn’t taken his words as a slight toward her taste, throwing in a “But what do I know. It’s probably really rare or something, right?” He also hadn’t endeared himself to the stall keeper who was shooting the young lord daggers and Sil shrugged.
He was beginning to think this day might not be the easy ride he had expected. There was so much potential to get himself in trouble when he was asked his opinion, and he’d never been good at holding his tongue. “That one is nice, your majesty” he offered after a moment, indicating a deep red stone set in gold. “Kotas colours”

Yanni couldn’t help but smile a little as the boy seemed to give his honest opinion on it rather than kiss her ass and say the ugly jewelry was nice. She hadn’t liked the item in the slightest, but had simply wanted to see what kind of man Silanos was. Yanni was not a fan of people lying to say what they thought the Queen wanted to hear. She valued honestly and the bravery it took to speak one’s mind when sometimes if felt like it shouldn’t be done.
“You are right, Lord Silanos. This stone is ugly, and not rare as this man would have us think with his inflated price. It is a common stone, painted and shined up to seem as if it was worth more than it was.” She said, and the merchant looked taken aback that the Queen called him out so boldly on the stone, but he could not argue, for he knew it was true. She set the necklace down and turned her attention to what he had pointed out instead.
He had pointed out a necklace, adorned in the Kotas colours almost as if it was on purpose. She supposed it was a nice colour combination in general, and that was likely the driving thought upon the mind of who ever crafted it.
“Nevermind the colours of my house, what catches your eye?” She said, curious to what he would prefer himself. A lot could be divined from learning of a person’s taste in certain things, or at least Yanni found it was so. Despite her title of Queen and access to more money than she could imagine, Yanni had never been one for extravagant jewels and dresses that were more expensive than they were worth. Did she look regal and Queenly when she needed to? Absolutely. But she did so without spending extravagant amounts.
It showed that she was not a Queen who had been there for the money or title it provided. That she was a woman with simple tastes who preferred to let her actions speak to what sort of person she was rather than the amount of gold she wore.
“Did your mother ever take you to the market to shop?” She asked curiously, she did not know all that much about his family or his mother, other than what she had heard through gossip. But Yanni was not one to follow gossip much. She preferred to judge people and situations for herself rather than listening to what others had to say about things.
She had no ulterior motives to bringing him along with her, it was as simple as he seemed like he needed a bit of a break from her son, and she had enjoyed having a bit of company with someone who seemed to want to talk to her as much as she wanted to talk to them. Not that her family was ignoring her on purpose, nor did she blame them, it just seemed as if she had been left on her own since the preparations for war started, and while she had her own work to do, sometimes she got a bit lonely doing it on her own. Now that Evras was too fragile to help, and Asia seemed to be preoccupied a lot, she spent a lot of her days between waking up and retiring to her chambers with her husband, on her own.

Silanos almost felt a little for the stallholder with how ruthlessly Queen Yanni laid bare his dishonesty. But then he decided that it was the man’s own fault, and actually he was more glad that the Queen had not taken offence at his honesty. That was good. She didn’t however, seem quite so interested in his suggestion towards the red gem, and Sil looked momentarily thrown by her question.
Did she mean for him? Or something he’d buy for someone else? The Valaoritis Lord was not terribly vain. His general countenance was slapdash sophisticate - the clothes were finely made, but they were thrown on carelessly, or in a great rush. Or had been slept in. All of which were viable possibilities.
“...Me? Oh I’m..uh..” He glanced over the stall, shot the man glowering at him a hard look of his own and in the end reached for a gold bangle set with some kind of blue stones. The setting was not uniform, but rather looked like they had been scattered across the metal. It was unusual, he liked it. “This isn’t horrible,” Silanos finished on, with a shrug. “Though I’m no great expert in jewelry my Lady”
He let the bangle settle back atop the table, frowning when he realised he had actually for a moment been thinking about sending it to Leto. The stones were kind of like stars. Sil blinked and then turned back to the Queen as she posed another question, gladly thinking on that instead of whatever that other foolishness had been.
“When I was younger,” he said “I was the littlest...for a bit anyway until my cousins came to stay. So yeah I’d trail around after my mother driving her to distraction. And then I was away for a little while” He caught the inside of his lip between his teeth and worried at it for a moment because it was a bit of a sore subject.
Sil didn’t know what, if anything, Timaeus had told their mother of his disgrace, didn’t know how much she was capable of understanding and holding onto if he had. He’d been shocked when he returned from Taengea at just how much she had changed, and it had felt like trying to hold onto sand and watching it run through his fingers anyway. And then he’d fucking run off and left her again anyway.
He swallowed and turned a too-bright smile upon the Queen.
“I am better behaved now than I was then” he joked, before catching himself and hoping she did not see fit to question the truth in such a statement. Moving on quickly“And I promise I won’t even complain about having achy legs” Because that, he could remember, had been a feature of shopping trips with his mother. He would tug on the back of her peplos and complain bitterly at having to walk so long at her heels. As an adult, he didn't imagine that being an issue, nor that laying hand on the Queen’s raiment would be wise. Nevermind the fact that the past month had seen him put through the wringer in terms of physical training, so Silanos was fitter than he had ever been. He thought he would probably cope with whatever Queen Yanni could throw at him.

He thought he would probably cope with whatever Queen Yanni could throw at him.
Yanni watched as Silanos studied the jewelry, and he had a look on his face, one that indicated there was something on his mind as he stared at the metal and gems. She wondered if there was perhaps a woman on his mind as he studied them. She knew little of the courtship between the younger generations. Hell, she knew little about the courtship of her own children apparently, considering the news that Vangelis had just brought to her and Tython’s attention the other night.
His mood suddenly changed as he answered her about his mother, and she could tell there was something eating at him. He seemed to carry a lot of guilt, and she supposed that what ever he was feeling guilty about was also likely what had lead him to being under her sons command. Clearly he had done something bad, or perhaps more than one thing. Yanni made a mental note to see if she could find out some information on what exactly could be weighing so heavily on him.
She waved him to follow her as they moved on from the jewelry merchants stall, his wares were subpar and not worth the price anyways. She continued on, walking at a slow pace as she looked at the other wares being sold, seeing if there was anything that would catch her eye.
“It feels like only yesterday that my own children would accompany me to the market.” She commented. It had been a few years since any of them had done so, they were grown now, far too busy to accompany their mother to the market as much as she wished for such things again. She just had to accept that she no longer held that importance in their lives.
Soon they would all marry, they would all of children of their own, and Yanni’s importance in their lives would fade further until she was merely a burden upon them, a thing to be taken care of until her passing.
She knew her children loved her, but she also knew that their lives would soon include more important people than her.
She did her best not to let any of that show on her face, but she was sure that there was a hint of the sadness in her tone as she had spoken.
She stopped at a stall that was selling silks and other fabrics, dyed all sorts of colour, some hailing from other lands and donned colours and patterns that were unique to their lands of origin.
She shifted through them, seeing if there was anything she liked, or anything that might look good on her husband or children that she could have made into clothing for them.
She paused on a black silk piece, taking it from where it was hung, she turned to Silanos and held it up as if to compare him to it. After being satisfied that the colour would in fact suit him, she picked out a few other pieces of cloth and paid for them. The merchant folded them tightly and tied them with a piece of hide to make them easier to carry.
Yanni waited expectantly for Silanos to carry the bundle of fabric for her.
“Years ago, when I still lived in my father’s house, before I was betrothed to Tython, I used to sew my own clothing.” She said, once again starting off at her slow pace to continue browsing.
“Much of it was hide or fur, as my brother and my father spent much of their time hunting, and it was the easiest material to get my hands on. But I remember this dress, my favourite one as a young girl. A deep grey in colour, it seemed to sparkle in the light. I only wore it on my trips to the cities with my mother.” She said, not sure where the story had come from or entirely why she was telling it to Silanos. She supposed it was just nice to have someone to listen to her stories.
Tython and she talked, but he had long ago heard all of her stories, and her children held no real interest in them. She had no idea if Silanos was interested, or if he was pretending to listen because of her status, but she liked to pretend he was enjoying spending his time with her.

Tython and she talked, but he had long ago heard all of her stories, and her children held no real interest in them. She had no idea if Silanos was interested, or if he was pretending to listen because of her status, but she liked to pretend he was enjoying spending his time with her.

Obediently trailing after the Queen as she stepped away from the jeweller's stand, Sil was glad she didn’t ask anything more about his mother. It was hardly an unknown, there was a reason the Lady Pirella had been seen less and less at court after all, but still..that did not make it anymore enjoyable for her youngest child to discuss.
Silanos cut a sideways glance at Queen Yanni but did not speak when she made a passing comment with regards to her own children. It did not strike him as the kind of remark that looked for a response, more a musing that had simply been spoken aloud. As he watched the woman’s face in profile, he supposed that he had never given much thought to what it must be like to be Queen. Why would he? But now, as he walked quietly beside the one who had, for some reason, shown him an unexpected kindness, he wondered if maybe it was no easy thing. Yanni had remained in Colchis all those times where her husband and sons had gone off to war, and Athanasia soon would marry and be gone away. Maybe there was a little loneliness in such a role. Still, Sil darted his eyes away and made no comment. It was not his place.
The marketplace around them was growing busier, and Silanos felt a little uncomfortable that the Queen had apparently forgone her guards. Not that there should be any trouble. But if there was... Well, it didn’t really bear thinking about. He glanced around them when Queen Yanni came to a stop by a stall selling fabrics, was not really paying too much attention as she handled the different swathes of silk and picked out a few that she liked. He was keeping watch or something, even though he had no fucking idea what he’d do about anything that he spotted. Huh.
Turning to find Yanni lifting some black fabric, he lifted one brow quizzically wondering who he was being used as a stand-in for. Vangelis maybe had similar colouring, and the man did favour black. Resisting the urge to suggest some hideous fabric as some small revenge against the man, Sil found himself carrying a heavy enough bundle of wrapped fabric by the time the Queen was done.
He was attempting to find a comfortable way to carry the awkwardly shaped package when she began to speak again, and this time Sil gave a nod
“In Taengea right? I was there for a couple of years. It’s a beautiful place.” Queen Yanni was so well-loved by the Colchian people that it was easy to forget she was not a native. “Whereabouts did you live? Not Vasiliadon then?”
He hefted the package under his arm, frowned at it for a moment before he looked back at the Queen. “ You don’t still sew your own clothes?” And then quickly “..not that it would be wrong or anything. Just..uh..different I guess. And having hobbies is good. I can’t say sewing has ever been one of mine”
He decided he’d shut up then because none of his hobbies seemed appropriate to discuss with the woman beside him. Equal parts amused and horrified at the idea of telling the Queen what he liked to get up to in his free time - in the good old days when he’d had any - Sil pressed his lips together firmly as they walked on.

She was rather glad that Silanos didn’t make a comment when she mused upon the past with her own sons. It hadn’t been an invitation to conversation, more of a musing of a mother who’s children had grown and had less time to spend with their mother. She longed for the days when they were still young and depended so heavily on her. When they had looked at her with wonder, thinking that she had to know everything there was to know in the world.
She laughed a little and shook her head.
“Not Vasilidon.” She agreed when he asked about where she came from. Her thoughts turned to her childhood, a childhood split between visits to the cities for civilized company at the courts as her mother would say, and the other half being spent among the beautiful green trees and plentiful animals of her father’s barony. Her heart ached to be back there again, it had for the last thirty six years of her life. As much as she loved her husband and her children, part of her would always belong to her home.
Forest and stone. Two incompatible things, and yet two things that had been brought together to rule Colchis for so many years.
“I was born and lived upon the island of Emae where my father held his barony. And my brother now holds his. A beautiful island, small but covered in such lush greenery. The animals there, you wouldn’t believe it, they roam wild every where you turn.” She said a wistful smile on her face. She had no idea if Silanos cared to hear any of her reminiscing but he had brought it up now.
“I can recall a time, in my much younger years, younger than even you are now. My brother was preparing for his daily hunting trip, and I came out of the house, dressed in some of his old hunting clothes, hair tied back. I was determined, he would take me hunting.” She laughed a bit at the memory and shook her head.
“Needless to say, I made him take me, and he likely regrets it to this day. I was not born to hunt.” She said, realizing she had been rambling a bit, it wasn’t like her. It was just nice to feel like someone cared to listen to her stories again. Her husband had long since heard them all, and her children’s interest in her small adventures had waned when they began to have their own. Their war stories intrigued them more than a story about their mother failing to hunt well.
She raised an eyebrow as he questioned if she sewed her own outfits, and then quickly backtracked so it didn’t seem like he was mocking her for such a thing.
“No, of course not. I stopped sewing much of anything a long time ago.” She said, not adding that she had only done so because it would be frowned upon if it was discovered the Queen made her own clothes instead of spending large amounts of money purchasing them from others. There was a certain image she had to uphold after all.
“Dare I ask what it is you do with your own free time? Or is it safe to assume it is much the same as any young man your age?” She questioned with a raised eyebrow, wondering how he would react to the inquiry.

Sil hadn’t intended to provoke such nostalgia in the Queen, but he couldn't very well do anything other than smile and nod. He supposed perhaps she got homesick sometimes. Frowning a little, he didn’t recognise the name she gave, but much of Taengea had been green and lush so he could sort of follow her descriptions. His eyes did widen a little at her story about hunting though, because looking at the woman before him, that was harder to imagine.
“Me either” he could at least agree with her there. He didn't have the patience for it, Silanos was much more about things he could enjoy now, not hours of preparation so he might enjoy something later. And he wasn’t one who found comfort in the getting ready either. No thank you. Dull, dull, dull. “Though we get some good game in some Eubocris, goats and deer and what have you for people who are into that kind of thing. Your brother might enjoy it”
Silanos was certainly more happy with the distractions of the city. Returning to Eubocris had been stifling in the extreme, and it wasn’t just because of the ghosts there, or his mother’s vacant stares. The mountains were oppressive, particularly when he felt like Tim had sent him back for that very reason, to fence him in.
Or to protect him
Silanos blinked, because that was a realisation that he’d been thinking on over the past days, and it was somewhat galling to admit. The sigh slipped out without him meaning for it to, and the change of topic was welcome. Not that he had much more to add to talk of sewing. That the Queen seemed almost to read his thoughts as she voiced her next question, had Sil fumble his grip on the rolled fabric, and he bought himself a moment before answering in seeing it resettled under his arm.
“Oh..yeah. The usual.” he evaded, with a vague wave of his hand. Let her fill in the gaps with something palatable. It just didn’t seem right to talk of gambling and drinking and the general debauchery that Silanos liked to get up to with the woman next to him. Much as he wouldn’t dream of telling his mother what he did in his spare time. It also reignited that prickle of unease that he’d felt before, the feeling that he was deceiving the woman. If she knew...He found himself reluctant to sully Queen Yanni’s opinion of him, and Sil was pretty sure that she wouldn’t be quite so kind if she knew what he’d done. She must wonder why he was suddenly a fixture at the Kotas Manor? He both wanted her to know, and very much didn’t, and it left him feeling discomfited.
“Not that free time is much of a feature since being in your son’s service” Sil observed, moving them on “He does a lot..” More than the Valaoritis Lord would have credited, had he not been forced to observe it from close at hand. As it was, the younger man could at least give some grudging respect for the sheer number of hours the crown prince kept in his day. And he was still glad for some reprieve from it. “Though I’m not going to lie, I’m glad to be out of those meetings he fills his days with. You’re certain you aren’t in need of a more permanent assistant ,your majesty?”

“I’m not sure my brother could ever be coaxed so far from his home. And I really can’t blame him. I hold much love for Colchis, but had my situation for marriage been different, I likely would have remained back in Taengea my entire life.”
She said with a little shrug. Knowing what she knew now, she would not have changed a thing, her marriage and her children were the most important things in her life, and despite a bit of homesickness, she would not have chosen a different future for herself. She wasn’t sure if Silanos could understand what she meant, when she stated that she likely would have stayed in Taengea if she had not been married to the future King of Colchis, she had no idea if the boy held any sort of attachment to Colchis, or any other place for that matter. She realized she really didn’t know much about him beyond the basics of his family and the whispers about him among those who attended court sessions.
She didn’t miss his slight fumble as she asked her next question, and then wave her off with a vague answer. Clearly there was something there, something that he didn’t want to tell her. She didn’t push further, if she truly wanted to know, she was sure she would be able to find out what he was trying to hide. She didn’t find it all that important, at least not now, it was likely that he was the same as any young man his age, and Yanni thought she probably didn’t want to ask what he was getting up to in his spare time truly. As long as it didn’t affect her or her family, she would let him keep his secrets.
“He always has. Vangelis has never known how to slow down and take time to himself. Such is the life of a prince, especially a first born.” She said simply, and both statements were true. Vangelis had a lot of pressure on his shoulders, and the boy had taken it seriously since he was old enough to comprehend what was expected of him.
She laughed and shook her head.
“I am afraid not. My daughter assists me with my duties, and when Princess Evras is capable of it again, she assists me as well. Besides that, I am sure Vangelis would not be happy if I were to take you away from him. While I do not know the nature of your arrangement with him, I know that it is something he takes seriously. We are lucky I was able to borrow you for today, any longer and he might try to argue even with me.” She said, only half teasing. Vangelis would only allow so much from his mother before she was crossing a line, and she knew her son well enough to know that line and when things were being pushed too far.
“I will do my best to borrow you again soon.” She assured him, she was enjoying his company. He was much more talkative and a little less serious than anyone else she really spoke with daily, and it was a bit of a nice change of pace.

“Yeah...Taengea has a different feel. I liked it” Sil answered. Everything had certainly been a lot simpler when he was there. He’d fled Colchis after Nico...Timaeus had taken his years away, why couldn’t Sil do the same? Fresh off the boat and raw with grief, the younger Valaoritis had done his very best to submerge it under a river of wine, and it had worked for a time. He’d been carefree drunk, happy. Then the nightmares had started, and the wine had become more about avoiding them until he’d discovered other ways to stay awake, other things that were more effective at dampening the horror of reliving that moment over and over again. It had been fine, that careless existence. Only when he came back to Colchis did those habits he’d formed lead him into trouble, and he felt like he’d been drowning in it ever since.
So despite how it felt like he was misleading the woman next to him, it seemed only sensible to avoid any talk of that so Sil brought up Vangelis as an obvious distraction, and from that, it was an easy throwaway enquiry as to whether Queen Yanni didn’t need some more permanent help. Sil slid his most charming grin in her direction, wide and boyish. It had certainly been a more pleasant way to spend his morning than what he would have been doing otherwise, and though he was mostly jesting, there was the barest hope that something might stick.
If the grin flickered momentarily at mention of Princess Evras, Silanos was quick to stamp it out, masking his discomfort behind an exaggerated sigh at the news that this wasn’t to be a more permanent secondment. “The conversation is better here” he muttered before catching a hold of himself and remembering who he was speaking with. The Queen, Anathasia’s mother.
She didn’t know the nature of his arrangement with Vangelis, but somehow Sil thought that once she did, she probably wouldn’t be trying particularly hard to do anything other than have him hung. Still he pasted a smile back on his face and gave a nod. “Yes, my note taking skills have made me almost indispensable I’m sure. And I’m almost certain that Prince Vangelis secretly appreciates all my efforts at conversation, though he does a good job at hiding it. He hasn’t yet discovered my impressive parcel carrying abilities though. And for that” he gave a dip of his head toward the Queen. “I’m at your service, your majesty.”

Yanni caught his comment about the conversation being better, but did not comment on it. She loved her son, but Vangelis was not a conversationalist. And while she could wind her way through the Courts and speak pleasantries when needed, her oldest child took after her in the way that neither of them thought words were needed for most things. Actions spoke louder, and she had tried to raise all of her children with that belief. Actions showed a man’s true intent, and everything a person chose to do spoke more than their words could ever say.
She couldn’t help but laugh as he joked about his note taking skills and ability to carry parcels. He was fun, he had a sense of humour that most of her children really hadn’t carried, and it was sort of refreshing to have a conversation outside of court matters and war talk.
“I will make sure to mention such skills to my son, he can put you to work carrying more.” She said, a hint of a teasing tone to her voice as she did.
The rest of the trip went along the same lines, light conversation and a bit of shopping, and Yanni had to admit it was a nice way to spend her morning. Usually her shopping was done in silence aside from commands every so often to her serving staff. She sort of felt like a normal person for awhile, instead of just a Queen or a mother. It was at that moment that she decided, at least for the most part, she liked Lord Silanos. There were a few things that were left unanswered about him, but she was sure that she would find out soon enough. She had a way of finding out what ever she needed or wanted to know.
If she planned on having Silanos around, even just casually as a friend to talk to, she would make sure that she was laying her trust in someone who deserved it. Not that he would be learning any secrets, or anything beyond polite and light-hearted conversation, but Yanni was not someone who trusted easily.
At least he did in fact make a good companion to carry her things while she shopped.
