The Colosseum, a vast amphitheatre of unrivalled grandeur, dominates the city's skyline. Constructed from gleaming travertine, its tiered structure stands tall, ringed by rows of intricately carved columns that frame each entrance. Inside, the arena stretches wide, its sand-covered floor stained with the memory of countless battles. The air is thick with the hum of anticipation, carrying the mingling scents of sweat, blood and metal. All around, the marble seats are positioned in hierarchical tiers, allowing guests to watch all manner of impressive battles. At times, the arena is filled with water to simulate sea battles, and, at other times, a light velarium covers the top of the structure, shading the spectators from the midday sun. Underground, the Colosseum's stone corridors form a labyrinth of vaulted chambers, in which gladiators, animals and performers prepare. This is a place of spectacle, and all who pass by know it.
