Before one even enters the Temple of Trajan, they are greeted by the sight of its enormous granite columns standing tall along its façade. Each column is taller than three men combined, and visitors to the temple must pass between them to enter a main hall that is equally impressive in its size. This hall is used mainly for the gathering of petitioners before they pass through to a rectangular central courtyard that frames an attractive central fountain topped by a colossal statue of Jupiter in gold and marble. It is here that most visitors make their prayers and give up their offerings to the god. At night, once the sun has set and all worshippers have left the temple, the priests gather these offerings and take them to another space at the back of the complex, where they are burnt in honour of the god in hope that he might deign to grant the requests made of him that day.
