It was early in the morning, just past breakfast time. The sun was just starting to rise, so it wasn’t boiling outside yet. There were a few fluffy, white clouds in the sky, which would help tame the sun whenever it raised fully. There was a soft wind that carried the same of the salt water. The temperature was warm outside, but it wasn’t unbearable. There wasn’t even a slight chance for rain, and overall the day looked promising. A good day for shopping.
Scylla was wearing a loosely fitted peplos. The tunic was draped and fastened beautifully around Scylla’s body. Scylla had a very petite body, with not many curves, but the way the tunic was draped, emphasized her small waist and then flared out. The tunic was also slightly off the shoulder, and it was died a light blue color, with gold accents around the edges. Scylla’s blonde hair was pulled back in two braids and tied together. When outside people could see hints of red in Scylla’s blonde hair, making her stand out. Scylla was wearing light brown leather sandals and carried a white with gold accent purse, which carried the money she planned on spending.
Scylla was on her way to the agora, which was a big central shopping area, in Almosis. It was a large open area where merchants of all different types could be found, most were local, and few were foreign. The agora wasn’t Scylla’s favorite place to be. It was often crowded and loud, and on a day as fine as today, there was no doubt that the agora would be busy. Merchants could be heard calling out their sales, people could be heard bargaining. Like most wealthy women, Scylla was accompanied by a servant her family owned. Which would come in handy, seeing Scylla had a lot on her list of things to buy.
Scylla needed six loaves of bread. Bread was something ate at every meal, and with such a large family, they went through bread very fast. She was going to pick up some olives, figs, and cheese. Each of these would be in smaller doses, seeing they were normally eaten only at lunchtime. Her final list of things would include vegetables, fruit, and plenty of fish. Fish was normally eaten for lunch and dinner, so they needed lots to supply them. The only beverage she would be picking up was wine. Which was also something used up very fast. Scylla had already stopped by many merchants. Her servant was carrying a box to put all the food in, and it was starting to get food. Scylla could tell her servant was starting to have a hard time carrying the box. Scylla didn’t treat her servants bad, so she reached into the box and pulled out the vegetables and fruits. She carried them in her arms and they continued their shopping. Their last stop was to get the fish. She had stopped by the table of a merchant she often bought from. She placed her fruits and vegetables down on the table, and she looked at the merchant. ”I need three pounds of fish.” He looked back at her and said, “Thirty silver owls.” Scylla made a you-have-to-be-kidding-me face. ”It’s me, Scylla. You’ve never charged me that much in the past. I’ll give you fifteen silver owls.” The merchant agreed with a smile and gave her the fish wrapped in a thin cloth. Scylla looked at her vegetables, fruits, and fish. She had no clue how she was going to carry all of this. She didn’t want to pile on three more pounds of food onto her servant, but she didn’t have enough arm room for all the food.
”I should have planned this out better.”

His trip to Almosis had been as spur of the moment as a prince could manage, after Vangelis’ departure it was important for the second prince to visit a few of the provinces to speak with the people there. The barons and nobles were in charge of the regular welfare of their citizens, but it didn’t prevent Zanon from traveling about a few of the provinces every now and then just to make sure all is well. He was dressed simply if well, exchanging his usual fine chitons for one of a sturdier material in a deep navy with basic brown leather belt and sandals. If anyone looked at him just briefly they would take him for perhaps a lower noble or a wealthy merchant, the best sort of status to slip about the city and see the world from their eyes.
With a pair of guards that always followed him at a discreet distance, Zanon chatted with various vendors and spent his coin where he could. One particular stand that looked as if it had been hastily put together by a traveling merchant held jewelry that caught his eye and he smiled as he lifted one pendant in particular. It was a deep ruby set in gold that had a serpent etched in it, a combination of Kotas colors and Thanasi symbols that immediately put him in mind of his wife. Exchanging coin for the piece with the vendor, he thanked the man and continued on his way, a desire for a bit of a bite to eat to keep him over on his wanderings sent him on search for a roll. The food stalls were clustered together a ways down the road and as he passed over more drachmae for a bite for himself and his guards, he caught the words of a young blonde woman across from him.
With a raised brow he tucked his own prize away and signaled for his guards to remain at ease. He approached her with a slight smile, and gave a nod of his head in respect. A gesture at her overburdened servant and her own full arms was the beginning of his introduction as the second prince spoke. The girl was clearly noble, she had a familiar air to her as if he had seen her features before but he couldn’t recall meeting her properly. Perhaps he’d run across some of her family members in court, or she could easily be one of the countless Vlahakis girls. She was certainly lovely enough to be one.
“My lady, forgive my intrusion. I overheard your struggles and wondered if I might be of some assistance? I’ve two good arms to carry if you wish.”

“My lady, forgive my intrusion. I overheard your struggles and wondered if I might be of some assistance? I’ve two good arms to carry if you wish.”
Scylla casted her deep blue eyes on her servant, they had a look of distress. They began to speak to one another, Scylla said, ”If I put the fruits back into the box, I should be able to carry the fish.” Her servant replied back, “I should be able to carry the fish and you can hold onto the fruits.” Scylla could tell that her servant was just trying to be respectful and kind. Though Scylla didn’t want her servant to suffer. Scylla thought to herself, ”I should have brought one of the male servants. Lykon could’ve done it.” Though Scylla didn’t dwell in her thoughts for long. She soon saw a gentlemen start to stroll towards her.
When the gentlemen was farther away Scylla just noticed his clothes. They were nice, he had a deep navy chiton on with matching brown leather sandals and belt. Scylla felt like she knew most of the nobles in Almosis. So from this gathered information, she assumed he wasn’t from around here. Once the gentlemen got closer Scylla noticed more prominent features. He had a very strong jawline, and his eyes were so dark. Scylla was almost taken aback from his tough features. One other thing she noticed, which was slightly odd was the pair of guards that hung back, though they were looking over at them. Scylla glanced around in attempts to find who the guards could possibly be guarding in Almosis. It hadn’t struck her that they were guarding the gentlemen that was walking towards her.
When the gentlemen gave her a nod, she returned the respect with a small nod as well. Next, he gestured at all the food and said, My lady, forgive my intrusion. I overheard your struggles and wondered if I might be of some assistance? I’ve two good arms to carry if you wish. Scylla was stubborn, yes, but she wouldn’t deny help when she needed it. She gave him a bright smile before she spoke, ”That would be wonderful. My servant and I are very grateful for the help.” As she finished her statement, she picked up the three pounds of fish and handed them towards the gentlemen. She felt like she knew the face, but she couldn’t put a name to it. So she assumed the easiest way to get a name out of someone, would to be to introduce themselves.
”I’m Scylla of Vlahakis.” She started as she began to move away from the table, carrying the fruits and vegetables, where she had bought the fish. Her servant was following, carrying the box of other foods, and she expected the gentlemen to do so as well. ”I know the nobles of Almosis, so you must not be from here.” Scylla assumed he was of higher status than a merchant from his dyed fabric and the way he carried himself. Scylla was beginning to lead the way out of the agora and towards her estate.
”I’m on my way to my families estate. It’s a bit of a walk, but we should be there before the sun has reached its highest point.”

Zanon smiled easily in return, giving a nod and lifting the items she indicated fairly easily. Not for nothing had most of his life been spent training and sculpting himself so that carrying a few pounds of fish was of little difficulty. Well, that hadn't been the primary purpose of his military life but it certainly helped when aiding damsels in distress. Giving a nod to his guards, the men followed at a close distance as he fell in step with the young noblewoman, recognition flickering across his face as she gave her name. Of course, Vlahakis were the barons of the province so it would stand to reason any noblewoman would belong to them, especially given how very blonde she was like the rest of her family.
"Lady Scylla, I believe we have met once before but you were much younger." He grinned as he looked her over before turning to watch where they were going. "Zanon of Kotas. I have to say, you have grown very beautiful since our families last met."
It wasn't just flattery, she was stunningly beautiful with her delicate features and blue eyes pure as crystal. There was something about her that just exuded the grace of her birth, and though he had offered to help in an attempt to be kind, he found himself thrilled to find an excuse to speak with her and get a read on the young noblewoman. He'd spent little time in the company of his wife these days, so any pretty face that smiled easily and looked so inviting was very much worth getting to know. They'd met long ago when her father had come to swear his alliance to their houses, and he knew her brother Lazaros well from the time he spent in Midas. Perhaps he ought to bring the rest of his family to court.
"A walk though will be refreshing. I always enjoy a chance to explore our kingdom. But, tell me my lady. Why have you not come to court in Midas? You are of an age to marry, are you not?"

Scylla was walking confidently towards her grand home. She had her deep blue eyes on the familiar scenery around her, she loved the land of her home. From the smell of the salty sea to the sight of the rolling hills. She was waiting for the answer from the gentlemen helping her. She took her loving gaze off the land around her when she heard his masculine voice speaking. She placed her blue eyes on him as he started. His words enlightened her, it brought back the memories that she was struggling to remember. He said, Zanon of Kotas. I have to say, you have grown very beautiful since our families last met. A smile slipped onto her face as she started to recognize the gentlemen before her. Though her smile slipped right back off her face when he called her beautiful, and a shyer looking facial expression filled its place.
Scylla felt the eyes of the Prince looking her over, and all of a sudden her confidence started to waver. She almost felt a little uncomfortable, she thought to herself, ”He is married. Right? He’s looking a little hard.” Before she could say anything in reply, Zanon spoke again. A walk through will be refreshing. I always enjoy a chance to explore our kingdom. After the first few words, Scylla thought to herself, ”Okay, this is better. Let’s talk about the landscape.” But she had thought too soon, because his next sentence was, But, tell me my lady. Why have you not come to court in Midas? You are of an age to marry, are you not? The topic was back on her, and her relationship status this time. She hadn’t met many men that looked at her the way he was looking at her.
She replied in a steady voice, ”I am of age to marry. Though with Lazaro gone, and my father sick. I need to stay home and help take care of the estate.” The news that Scylla’s father was sick was common knowledge. At least in Almosis at least. Their conversation made time seem to go back faster. Her beautiful estate was not too far off. It couldn’t be seen yet, but soon the place she called home would be visible.
"How is your wife?" She asked casually.

He could feel her squirming under his gaze and had to remind himself to look elsewhere every once in a while. Keeping a smug grin to himself, Zanon wondered if her shy look would fade should they find themselves alone. Such a beauty certainly couldn't be entirely innocent and if she was, well that was even more reason for him to want to look and touch. The Vlahakis family was a well respected one, pale and blonde compared to most other Colchian families and their women held a delicate beauty that was very much in contrast to the other women in the country. And yet, he'd not managed to have one and it was a challenge he was very much interested in taking on.
As they walked along he gave a sympathetic nod as she reminded him of her father's illness. It was a shame the older man was doing poorly, but clearly he had a good deal to be proud of with the way the commander and his other children were handling themselves. His brow raised slightly as Scylla told him of her responsibilities with the estate. He was even more intrigued at the idea of leaving a daughter to handle important runnings of things, but then again if she were capable there was no reason not to.
Her question about his wife brought his grin back and he chuckled at her inquiry. It was said casually but it seemed as if she was fishing to remind him of his status. Clever of her indeed, and perhaps he ought to take that as a cue of her disinterest, but he suddenly found himself wondering if the Vlahakis nobles had an extra room for the night. He wanted to know more of the pale beauty before him.
"She is well, or so I hear. Much of her time is taken up by visiting the temples and her own family. We are not as close as we once were." They were trying to repair that rift, but that wasn't quite public knowledge, only that they were cordial again after years of hatred was known. As far as this girl needed to know his bed still needed filling and he'd found someone he had an interest in sharing it with at least once.

Zanon had replied to Scylla’s slick question with, She is well, or so I hear. Much of her time is taken up by visiting the temples and her own family. We are not as close as we once were. Scylla was saddened by this reply, there was a clear gloomy look on her pale face. She couldn’t imagine being married and unhappy in that marriage. She replied promptly to Zanon, ”I’m sorry to hear that. I wish only the best for the two of you.” Her voice had a genuine tone of sincerity, Scylla wanted so badly to get married, she would hope every marriage was a happy one.
Scylla’s blue and gold peplos flowed naturally when a gust of gentle wind blew from their right. She enjoyed the wind, bringing the smell of the sea even stronger to her senses. The wind blew the peplos tighter against her petite body. The wind also blew loose strands of her blonde hair into her pleasant face, which she quickly pushed out of her face and back behind her ear with her left hand. She had to move her hand quickly to make sure none of the local food she had been carrying fell.
After the short gust of wind had passed the magnificent view of her estate came into view. The house was constructed of stone and clay bricks. A dip in the middle of the house where the courtyard would be could be seen from far away. Their livestock could be seen roaming the land, goats, dogs, horses, pigs, and sheep. Scylla loved nothing more than coming home and seeing her beautiful estate. The love for her estate could be seen from the look of apparent ease on her lovely face.
She turned her blue eyes from her home and placed them on the tall dark-haired man walking beside her. She appreciated the help that Zanon had given her. The trip would have been much more strenuous on the two female. ”This is the Vlahakis home in Almosis.” She said, referencing towards the estate that was growing ever closer, ”Thank you for all your help.” Her voice was kind and full of thankfulness. She wasn’t sure if Zanon would head back to the agora where they met, or if he had other plans in mind.

She was either being very coy or had little interest. In either case, he simply resigned himself to the fact that not every maiden was one that could be wooed. There was also genuine caring in her tone when she wished them well and he gave a slight smile of that. It was nice to meet someone who didn't seem desperate to climb the social ladder or use any sort of connection with him for their own gain. Surprising, but nice. And he would be lying if he hadn't been hoping she might have been a bit more amenable to using her wiles, something they could both gain a bit of pleasure from.
The house that came into view was nothing as grand as his own, but was still a respectable and formidable home that spoke to the wealth and status of the Vlahakis family. It was lovely in its own right, and with the livestock grazing nearby had a very air of pastoral peace that he wished he could revel in for a time longer. Her thanks brought his attention back to the beautiful blonde and he smiled graciously, giving a shrug of his shoulders as he hefted the items he'd been carrying.
"It was no trouble at all, my lady. I am always happy to help one of the citizens of Colchis, especially when they are so lovely."
Glancing to the house, he tilted his head slightly wondering if he ought to pay his respects to Lazaros or if he ought to turn around and make his way back to Midas. He had intended to be home that evening, but there was a temptation to stay and get to know Scylla better. Not that she seemed to have any strong feelings about his presence, but he did still wonder what she might feel like in his arms. Carrying on until he could pass his burden off to one of the other servants of the estate, Zanon gave a deep bow to the lady he had accompanied from town.
"A pleasure, Lady Scylla. Perhaps we will see you soon at court? I should very much like to speak with you again."
