For some, the countryside was liberating. Danae on the other hand, it was suffocating.
It wasn't her idea, of course, to visit her brother in the Providences. This plan had been all her mother's doing. She said she missed Elias, but that didn't mean she had to drag Danae and Chara with her. There were more important things for her to do in the capital. Danae didn't have any business connections out here and figuring how everyone seemed to be trying to keep her within the manor walls, there was no chance she was ever going to make new ones. And since Elias was not their father and was not as keen to let his kid sister sit in on the meetings he conducted here, there was nothing to do, but gossip with her sister. Needless to say, Danae was bored out of her mind.
So it didn't take long for Danae to start exploring. Problem with that thought was that she had been here before. Elias had had this manor since he was sixteen and he was now twenty-four. She had spent many afternoons wandering these halls before.
And yet, she didn't recognize the door in front of her.
Tucked away in a lightly used corridor was a weathered door that she had never seen before. Maybe she just hadn't noticed it until now. Either way, given how bored she was up until now, this prospect of finding whatever was behind the door was exciting. In fact, this was the most exhilarated she had felt in a week. So, there was no debate on whether she was going to intrude.
Standing in the doorway, Danae struggled to recall the last time she been in here, that is if she ever had been here at all. Everything in this room seemed so foreign and strange, but judging by the thick layer of dust that seemed to be coating the room made it clear that none of this was brought here by her brother. This was all here way before any of them.
As she entered the room, she made sure to push the squeaky door firmly shut behind her. Fearing a repeat of what happened in the Palati, she made a point double and triple-checked that it was indeed closed. After all, she didn't want anymore Emilia's sneaking up on her. Once she was alone in the quiet room, it seemed as if it was a completely different world. It was completely silent and the air was much heavier in here than the rest of the manor. (Probably due to the thick layers of dust, of course.) Time seemed to slow, but the one thing she noticed above all others was that she didn't feel as if there were a thousand eyes upon her all at once. A small sigh of relief escaped her as this realization struck her. When was the last time she had known what this felt like?
Danae wandered around the room, exploring the unseen treasures it held. Her hands brushed over faded fabrics and piles of molding scrolls. Each touch seemed to send lightning through her fingertips as the thrill of being alone and finding something new struck her again and again. Who knew such a sullen girl could have a childish sense of wonder? There was no purpose to what she looked through, it was just whatever caught her eye.
That was until she found the box.
It was sitting forlornly on a desk shoved into the corner, half buried underneath a pile of papers. That didn't stop the gleam of the gems on top from catching Danae's attention as the candle's light glimmered throughout the room. Now that, she silently thought to herself, has to be something interesting.
Without thinking twice, she made her way to the box and pried it open. No one would care if she did or did not anyway. No one had been here in years and besides, all it probably held was jewelry. But what Danae didn't know was that it contains something else...
Something much more important than just a few measly trinkets.

When Danae flicked the lid of the box back, she was surprised to see that its contents were only a single vial. Well, that would explain why it was so light, she silently thought to herself as she inspected her newest treasure. The interior of the box was perfectly carved to fit the vial, making sure that if it was rattled no one would be able to hear what was inside. That was peculiar to say the very least. Danae wasn’t sure if she had ever seen anything like it, but at least that made it clear to her that whatever this was, it was special to whoever had this box made. Realizing that was all she needed to know that it would become special to her, whatever it may be.
“Who would go through that trouble just to leave it here?” Danae muttered quietly into the dusty room; her words echoed off the dirty walls as she set the box down and once more looking it over. Now that she was taking a second glance at its decorations, she could tell that it was covered in symbols from lands afar. This did little to help her narrow down what she had discovered of course. Perhaps it was a foreign poison meant for a family enemy? A perfume for some bygone Stravos lady? A cure that came too late for a sick child? Either way, Danae was no closer to discovering what this was exactly.
Now picking up the vial itself, she now noticed that the seal was just another peculiarity to add to her discovery’s ever-growing list. The seal was so thick and tightly wrapped around the vial that there was no way Danae was going to be able to pick it off with her fingernails. (Which she did try for a few moments, to her credit.) Either way, there was no way that she was going to be able to get to the pink liquid sloshing around inside. Or at least, she thought it was pink. The vial was so small it was hard to tell. If she closed it within her fist, it would completely disappear underneath her fingers. A useful feature if it was a poison, but a foolish one if it was something trivial, like a perfume.
Either way, Danae realized that she would never discover what it was while she was in here.
Carefully, she tucked the vial back into its little pocket and clasped the box tightly shut. For a moment, she left just sitting on the desk where she found it as she searched through the room to see if there was anything that would be of equal interest to the vial. But what could possibly compare to a mysterious liquid, hidden in a box covered in mysterious symbols? Not anything else that Danae ran across that’s for sure.
Satisfied that she had discovered the most intriguing of this room’s secrets, for now, she went back to the box and tucked it under her arm. She was sure to turn the facade of the box to her stomach, making it hard for anyone she might run into wouldn’t be able to see it’s puzzling exterior. (This was a secret she would keep to herself for now.) Though it was doubtful that she would cross paths with anyone though, figuring since this room wasn’t in a well-trafficked part of the manor. So, it wasn’t that surprising that the coast was clear when she peered out of a slight crack between the slats of the deteriorating door. Once in the hall, Danae hurried down the familiar maze of halls to her room to hide the box in her belongings; hopefully to not be seen until she made it back to Athenia and could find someone who would understand what the box truly was.
She could only pray that no one ran into before she made it there, of course.
