His arms surrounded her, as if nothing could harm her, could ever come between them. And Zenais wanted to believe that, desperately so. If she could close her eyes and just pretended that she didn't start all of this as a farce, that she had an overarching plan for duping him... would it help any? But she also knew that was akin to her avoiding reality, something that would slap her right in the fact the moment the sun rose,or the moment he found out.
His barrage of questions made her pause her breathe, her heart skipping a beat. How could she answer him? When she wondered if he would even still want her children upon knowing of the truth? Her voice would shake, and Zenais's lie would be given up.
So instead, she took a deep breathe, and nuzzled his chest further. "Then enjoy it, my prince." her voice was soft, almost appearing as if she was sleepy and tired after their exertions. "We have a lifetime to think on those questions, do we not? Tis too soon."
Tilting her head up, Zenais stretched towards him and planted a light kiss on his lips, innocent and chaste, a laugh considering what had just transpired between them. "The night grows late for now, my prince. I grow weary." Leaning her head on his shoulders, her eyes fluttered close, her breathe growing even. She needed him to sleep, and her fingers softly brushed and caressed is bare chest and arms in a soothing manner. Because she could not do it so flagrantly in front of him. That would put paid to her plans immediately.... and she had quite some way to travel to get the money and settle the debt, before she was prepared for all of this to blow up in her face.
Zenais had made her choice afterall. To sacrifice her love for her father's safety.

Yiannis felt like he was floating. Sweat soaked his body, heat still pouring off him. Nonetheless, the only thing he wanted was to be closer and closer to her. His heart still clapped in his chest, but his muscles hung easy. He felt the urgency of a hundred questions about the future, and a contentment so deep he couldn't be shaken from the present. This was the perfect moment. A deep dream of all his desires, unwinding into reality. The only thing that kept him awake was a desire not to let moments with her slip.
But then she was yawning as well. Saying how she wanted to sleep. Her head against his shoulder felt so right. He couldn't resist the urge to touch her still. Just there, the smallest kiss. Now squeezing at her buttocks. A most perfect revelry. It was so easy for her to turn away his questions. He recognized he was all boyish enthusiasms just then. And over the last few weeks, he'd come to trust that she would not just understand but temper him. There was such peace, knowing there was someone Earth who would do that for you. Someone to whom he could give everything.
"As you wish it, wife mine. Remember I love you always" he finished.
Then he felt his lids growing heavy. Each breath spaced slower, deeper, and spaced further. This was satisfaction. Zenais was beside him. They were leaning on another for support. Hers was the last face he saw before slipping into darkness. The third prince of Kotas would not have wished for anything more.

She felt his breathe slow down, and felt him come down from his enthusiastic high. Willing herself to stay as still and calm as possible, so he would fall in his slumber. When he called her wife, it was simply another stake to her heart - to join the many that she had buried there herself. It was something Zenais had come to terms with... was it possible to ever become numb to pain? For she was beginning to suspect that that was exactly what she was getting at.
In silence, Zenais feigned sleep, as she listened to his heartbeat next to hers. For an hour, and then two, his heartbeat slowed to a steady thump, and the chilly air dried the sweat from their skin. As the streets quiet and the night slipped deeper, only when it was well and truly still, did Zenais move. Only a fraction at first, to check if Yiannis would stir. And when he did not, she slowly shifted herself out from under his arm, dropping silently onto the floor. Gathering her chiton, she haphazardly placed it on, dragging a long black cloak to drape over her shoulders, before hurrying out of the Alistaire manor.
With her hood drawn up over her head, clutched the signet ring she had placed carefully on the dining table where they had been before Yiannis had brought her above stairs, her other hand holding the ends of her skirts up as she ran barefooted across the small courtyard, towards the stables. There, the young teenager was quick to saddle her horse (the manor had long been understaffed, from the lack of funds). The whole time she moved in the dead of the night, her heart thudded as if a hundred wolves ran after her, her breathe coming heavy and hard. Zenais would often look behind her shoulder as she moved, the ghosts of her own conscience haunting her.
Her memories intermingled, Yiannis smiles with the scrawl of her brother's words on a missive she had received just a few mornings ago. Calix had heard. He had heard arguments. He had seen the debtors coming every morning to the Alistaire mansion in Lyncaea. Zenais simply had no time any longer, and it was simply by luck that Yiannis had chosen tonight. Driven by sheer desperation to help her parents and her young eight year old brother who couldn't tell what was going on and could only cry to his only elder sibling for help, Zenais vaulted on her horse, arranging the black cloak to cover her feet, before urging the horse on.
Her first stop was down the streets of Midas, to where she knew was the quarters of the old Master of Coin. There, Zenais thudded on the door until she received an answer by an old maid, who hurried to wake the old master. He grumbled, but then frowned when Zenais pushed the signet ring in his face. "Why would the prince not come see me himself?" he asked, a skeptical look directed in Zenais's direction. Her heart jumped to her throat, but the young girl willed herself to not show any outward reaction. Instead, the brunette forced herself to tilt her chin upwards in a haughty look, displaying the expensive green necklace she wore, hoping it lent enough credence to her claim "The prince has his reasons. I am his fiance, and you will do well to fulfill his request. A bag of 500 drachmae, please."
"I will need to confirm with the King and the prince himself, for-"
"Then hand me half the payment first. The prince needs it urgently and he is unable to leave where he stands. I need to deliver it to him." Zenais was desperate, and she hoped the Master did not hear her voice crack. 250 drachmae would not be enough to settle all the debts, but at the very least, it would be sufficient to ensure they did not come knocking at their door again.
The Master of Coin narrowed his eyes at the small brunette at his doorway, and then back at Zenais, before giving a small nod. Holding the signet ring in his grip, he disappeared and reappeared a moment later with a small, heavy bag. But when Zenais reached out to take the ring, he held it back. "Nay. I... need it for the records. I shall return it come morning."
Zenais bit her lip but nodded. It would not do now to insist she get the ring back, for it would simply arouse suspicion. Instead, Zenais loped the bag of coins around her saddlebag, getting on the horse. With a pull of her reins, she led the horse down the streets of Midas again, a fervent hope on her lips that the Master would not ask Yiannis where the money had been used for. Yiannis was known for his unorthodox method of battle - she had hoped this would be chalked up as one of the times.
But not to the Alistaire manor in the capital city. No, Zenais led her horse down the road leading away from the city, and down towards where the harbor of Midas was. From there, she would take a boat that was waiting, the captain of which she promised a handsome payment should he agree to take her at any time of the day. From the bag, she fished out 10 golden coins for him, and within a few hours, Zenais would find her feet on Lyncaean ground again. There, the young girl would seek out as many of her father's debtors as she could before the sun rose, disposing of as many of the gold coins as she can until she had paid off a majority of the debts. Only then, did Zenais return to her familial home, smiling in a tired manner as the sun rose.
As she collapsed on the kline of the manor's sitting room, her bleary eyes looked up as a young boy of eight walked in the room, and widening said eyes when he saw Zenais's prone form on the couch. The girl herself smiled at the sight of her younger brother, and reached out to embrace him as he came sailing into her arms. "Its fine now, Calix. No one will come and disturb them again."
Or so Zenais hoped. When her parents arrived, she told them that the prince had proposed to her, and that she had used the jewelry to repay the debts her father had. The family had joy for the first time in months.
But it was to never last.

But it was to never last.
Yiannis startled awake. A single pair of eyes were watching over him when eh fell asleep. A half dozen were staring back now. Shields, armor, spears. Reflex had him halfway to his seat. Before he noticed the Colchian seals on the front of their shields, he felt his own nakedness. He shrunk backwards, drawing the sheets about him as a slightly sick feeling stirred. Being forward at a public ball was one issue. Even had it been only whispers, they were easy enough to ignore. They'd not be the first nobles to abandon chastity. But being caught naked in his lover's bed was something else again. There was no deniability in this. Not when the whole room still stank of them. She was in danger of being smeared a harlot. He a scoundrel. Had he ruined his own wife's reputation?
"What's the meaning of this?" he barked. "Whatever you needed, you check with the servants."
The mood in the room was all wrong. The way they all just kept staring. Most just looked straight ahead, refusing to even meet his eyes. Had the incident lost him this much authority already? He could feel his mothers stare boring down on him from half a city away. He tried to summon up his own version against the guard captain. He was still of royal blood. Someone was going to explain all this.
"They are not available, Prince" the man answered at last.
"Of course. She sends them away sometimes for privacy. They don't stray far from the estate."
"Forgive, Lord Prince. We mean--we checked the living quarters. This resident lacks a full compliment of house staff. It has for some time."
Now Yiannis understood their expressions. The embarassment washed over him before settling in his stomach. All those times she had excused the skeletal satffing. He'd thought it just one more gift to him. But he couldn't tell why she would have mischaracterized things. Were her parents hiding something from her? For that matter, how hadn't he noticed? Mornings walks, luncheons, dinners that ran long into the twilight. The place was nearly a second home to him, His anxiety climbed another notch. Quite clearly, no one should have been seeking him here. And at least in some sense, it seemed that they knew far more than see. What had transpired in the night? And where was Zenais? The feelings building inside him funneled into a blustering rage.
"I am the third prince of the royal house Kotas. I command you state the nature of your business!"
"There's been a robbery"
"And instead of helping my beloved you swine are here--"
"--That's not--"
"--do you know?
"This!" the captain finished, extending his hand at the same time.
A shattering vase punctuated the last statement. Only Yiannis's scream was louder. Not that he could tell anymore. The whole world was spinning. Walls closing in on him. The guards look bewildered, and he couldn't begin to imagine his own expression. Half were looking away outright. This was more terrible than he would have imagined. Darker. A few seconds more and he would vomit. There's no way that he could accept this. Everything was well and truly over now. It was resting their perfectly in the captain's palm. Exactly as it should be. At exactly the moment he shouldn't. His signet ring.
