Dawn was ever so eager to leave the palace and accompany Princess Emilia, to the baths, to the senate, to the market, to the moon! It mattered not to her so long as she was allowed to stretch her mind and her legs a bit beyond the palace. Oh the sights and the sounds and the smells! It was all so glorious! As soon as they were on their way down the main thoroughfare the slave girl breathed deep savoring all the intricate smells to litter the air, both foul and fine.
After many years serving the Xanthos House she was finally obtaining a little more leeway when it came to accompaniment. She had been instructed to stay near the Princess, not touch anything unless ordered to by the Princess, and furthermore reminded that slaves were to be seen and not heard. She rarely had trouble with the later, though her steps lured in a minor zig zag down the road as they came across the merchants and their shops, curiosity pulling her gaze this way and that. What was this? What was that? Could they go in here or how about there? Her gaze looked to the Princess filled with hope a silent request.

The Feast of Sinners, while being a much anticipated event that her father had waxed poetic about, had to be slightly more taxing on Emilia. Too familiar to the situation in Taengea where she had been in the arcus when the head had appeared on a pike, Emilia had stuck to her father and sister's side like glue the whole time, and for once, did not mingle as she often did. Her smile was there, a practiced one she wore for public view, but anyone who knew Emilia well would see how close she stuck to her family, or how often her eyes darted to her bodyguard to ensure Nicholai was around.
But after a few weeks of that, the young princess found herself quite at ease again, so long as one did not remind her of the crowds and screams. It wasn't long before Emilia was itching to visit the markets again, already the time to find new material - especially necessary since she was to prepare her sister's bridal retinue for the big day. This being the first time she had the chance to plan something to this degree, the young Xanthos princess was understandably excited.
With Helen busy with training and instructing a new slew of slaves brought in to the palace to prepare the place for the wedding, Helen had been busy and as such, Emilia had chosen to bring Dawn with her, the closest she had to a friend and perhaps one of the maids that had stayed the longest with her next to Helen. Eschewing the carriages for simple horses, the girl was astride her gelding as the rest of her retinue walked, the bodyguards keeping a safe distance. Knowing Nicholai was busy, she had picked another set of guards to follow with.
At the edge of the markets, she got off with assistance, handed the reins off to not impede the crowds at the market with a horse. Emilia smiled at how Dawn appeared more finicky then she was, obviously distracted. Did she want something? Curiosity glimmered in her auburn gaze. "Dawn? Is there something you'd like to see?" a teasing light directed at the young slave girl she called her own. "Remember, we're here to get material for my sister's bridal retinue. They have to look as radiant as she as they escort her."
Waving at Dawn, the girl led her retinue down, the peach and white chiton they had helped her dress that morning making her tanned skin stand out, shining under the afternoon sun. The golden circlet on her head distinguished her from everyone else, the soft curls she had falling to frame her heart-shaped face. Eyes flickered here and there, instructing the slaves and servants to pick up whatever she wanted as she passed the gold coins to them. "Dawn, do you think this silk would look good on us?" she murmured, as she picked up an emerald bolt of silk, holding it up to the brunette haired girl. "I think Nicholai would agree with me." A sneaky smile curled Emilia's lips, as she sneaked a glance at her friend and slave.

Dawn paused in all her wonder and quickly skipped up to the Princess's side eyes wide with anticipation to whatever she may desire. "Wh- me?" She took a big look around her head swiveling and then gave a light nervous giggle, "Everything?" She requested with a bit of apprehensiveness choking off then end of the word. "It's-just-all-so-pretty-and-smell-good-and-vibrant-and-pretty-and--" She took a deep breathe, "Heh, heh, sorry my Lady, I got carried- a...Us?"
She looked positively baffled. Had she heard that right, did the Princess want to put the both of them in silk? Her cheeks flushed a deep red and she shook her head, "Oh...no no no, I couldn't possibly, it would be absolutely stunning on you th-" She began her prattle once more nervously so until she froze at the next statement. "Perhaps, or not...I wouldn't know what Nic-cholai would like, I mean, I guess, he might, if uhm...heh..." She swallowed hard and adverted her eyes for a moment, why would the Princess care what Nic wanted or liked? Did she like him...like, LIKE like him...too? No Dawn loved him there was a difference, a big difference, did it matter? Or did she know about her and Nic? Honestly she wasn't sure which was worse.
Finally she cleared her throat after fidgeting a moment, "Should it be your absolute desire for us to go in silk then of course we must, my Lady." Her sandal foot dangled about, carving squiggles in the road as she kept her eyes from the Princess, and hands behind her back. Occasionally though she did glance up, the silk sure did look nice.

Emilia laughed, used to her handmaiden's flighty nature. Dawn was easily distracted, but was attuned to her voice and responded quickly when she called. Nodding, she held up the silk again. "Of course, yes us. We have to dress similarly for my sister's wedding, or at the very least, match in some how. Helen would be busy helping my sister prepare, and I would need someone else by my side." she murmured, holding the cloth up to the girl. Emilia had skin more tanned then Dawn, so she pursed her lips as she noticed how the color did not accentuate her tone as it did hers, and immediately rejected the choice in her mind.
Emilia was a perfectionist, if nothing else, and she sought elegance in everything she chose for others.
Letting her gaze flicker back to Dawn as she turned to replace the silk back and pick out another one, this next bolt was a deep ash green, one that changed in tone as the light shone on it. This time, she held it up, and gave a smile. "I'm sure Nicholai would like this one." Again, the cheeky grin on her face. The princess knew, of course. She spent too much time in her bodyguard's presence to be able to see how often Nicholai's eyes flickered to her clumsy but beautiful slave. Yet as Emilia wanted to grant them both happiness, romantic that she was, Dawn's freedom was not hers to grant. She belonged to the Xanthos family, and as such decision was her father's and not hers.
"Then it is my desire, although I would need your input. Which would go with this ash green silk, do you think Dawn? And should I get a new crown to match the new chiton?"

She stammered about, trying to cloak the fact that she hadn't really given Persephone's wedding much thought."Oh! Right! Of course! I- I knew that, sort of, I think?" Her voice drifted off and she stared at her hands nervously as she picked at her cuticles.
"I mean not about Nic-cholai, uhm, hmm..." She briefly glanced up to catch the princess's cheeky grin, and swallowed hard once more. She wanted to discuss it all with her, but was absolutely terrified. She shook her head again, "I wouldn't know my Lady, what he, about him...I was referring to the wedding," She looked away, bothered by the topic of Emilia's guard and her lover, her husband.
It seemed the discomfort was sensed and the subject was changed, much to her relief. She looked up with a smiled, a silent thank you shown in her eyes. Now this she was good at, this she could help with. She looked past the princess and over the options before choosing a few light shades of brown, a deep purple, and silk of a blue green variety. "These! And of course a new crown because your style never dyes but cloth do!" She giggled at her own joke.

A knowing look crept into Emilia's eyes at her slave's stammering. Her sister's wedding was pretty much anything most people spoke of. Seeing as how it was slated to be one of the most celebrated events in the kingdom, the whole palace and really the whole city was in a flurry of preparation, right after the Feast of Sinners. To know that Dawn had not given that much though, was a telling sign to Emilia that the young slave (even if she was older then Emilia) had more on her mind.
She had seen how Dawn and Nicholai had grown sweet on each other, so many years ago (almost a decade really) ever since she had placed Dawn to care for her would-be bodyguard after his injury from saving her father at almost the cost of his own life. But she only watched from the corner of her eye, not wanting to meddle in the lives of others.
As such, she let the matter drop, and allowed Dawn to flit away and return with the few bolts of cloth she had chosen. With a critical eye, Emilia pulled at the material this way and that, matching purple with a light blue green, and signally for the finest white silk to be handed to her guards as one of the purchase.
Eschewing the browns and blue-green (for she had recently made a few sea-foam green silks), she took the deep purple, an expensive piece of cloth in a hue that Emilia rarely saw and knew would look splendid, the girl's heart danced in delight at beautiful bolt as she signalled for that to be given to her as well, pouring the gold in the happy vendor's palms before signally for Dawn to come along.
Strolling further down with the passel of guards behind her, the girl stopped at the goldsmith she often patronized, or summoned to the palace. He greeted her as per normal, quick to jump to attention. Allowing the maids and slaves to dust off the bench that was in a corner before she took a seat, Emilia was quick to be served with a tray of the most beautiful shipment of gems that would go with her new chiton. "Dawn, what would suit the purple silk you picked out, you think?"

Dawn visibly relaxed as she set to the task at hand changing out the bolts of cloth that were dismissed for the ones Emilia preferred, but as time wore on the guilt gradually began to set in. She wasn't one for lying particularly to Emilia, who in an odd way was sort of her best friend. As they moved out of the shop Dawn was the first to speak, "I'm...I'm sorry my Lady." She stated softly.
Her dark eyes traced a path on the street for her foot steps to follow before the moved to take a seat on the bench. "I lied, I mean, promise you won't tell anyone, but...I think...I-think-Nic-would-really, well like the silk." She blushed and swallowed hard, though she wasn't sure if Emilia heard her with the next question to come. Perhaps that was a good thing.
She looked to the tray of jewels, and with an astute eye she gestured to the golden necklace with the large amethyst, a golden snake wrapped around the egg like jewel, it's own holding amethyst eyes. "The snake, symbolizes a time of change, a rebirth...a respectful acknowledgment to what the wedding is about...from maiden to bride." She offered in explanation towards her choice. She liked things to have purpose not just appearance. Then again she was deeply devout when it came to matters of Hera, always admiring the Goddess for her steadfast loyalty to her husband.
Her gaze flickered to Emilia, "How-how long have you known?" She couldn't chase the subject from her mind, and as such nearly forgot to add, "my Lady."

She blushed and swallowed hard, though she wasn't sure if Emilia heard her with the next question to come.

Dawn's words had Emilia raising her brows, but the princess merely nodded with a sly smile. Oh, it wasn't hard to see the hidden looks her slave and bodyguard shot each other - Emilia was fairly sure Nicholai had a thing for Dawn. But Persephone had drilled it into Emilia to never meddle too much in the affairs of others, and as such, she merely gave a satisfied nod, and turned her attention to the tray of jewels that had been presented to her.
Nodding, the girl listened to Dawn astutely. While her slave was a clumsy klutz, she was a few years older then Emilia and as such, had a better knowledge on things at certain times. It was why, despite the accidents Dawn sometimes may cause, Emilia always asked for her suggestions when Helen was not available. "Very well. We shall have this then." The princess agreed, picking up the piece. "Please also craft a new crown for the Princess Persephone, she will need it for her wedding. I will send a detailed sketch of a design I have to you shortly tomorrow."
With that instruction, the princess stood up and waved at her retinue to head outside, her feet bringing her to return to where the guards held her gelding waiting for her. The question from Dawn had her flickering her eyes backwards, and then the girl flashed Dawn a secretive smile. "I just do, Dawn." It wasn't much. She knew they were sweet on each other. Of course she had no clue of their marriage. Emilia was a romantic, and she simply believed they harbored feelings for each other, and was eager to see them together.
Once her eyes spied the gelding and the rest of her retinue's rides, Emilia's final steps led her to the guard, who deftly handed the princess up into the saddle of Galathe. There, the princess held up the reins, and motioned at the Royal Palace of Athenia, her home. "We shall go then. Teucer, please ensure all my wares are delievered appropriately to the Palace tomorrow. We have plenty to do." Emilia murmured, and clicked her tongue to start their journey back.
