"And your Xiphos is ready to go, It's freshly sharpened and able to cut down any Barbarian bastard that tries flail at you."
Maximus' father: Adonis handed the freshly sharpened weapon to the young man. When Adonis served The Siren's Call in the province of Almosis, he would habitually sharpen his spear and blade with a whetstone earning him the nickname:
Aichmirós xifomáchos. Maximus smiled swinging the blade in short thrusts the blade singing against the wind as he did so. Maximus was proud of his father, Adonis was taller than Maximus with massive shoulders and calf muscles. He still sported scars all over his body from the campaigns he participated in, particularly a jagged vertical scar that ran through his eye and to the corner of his lip.
"Hopefully that Barbarian will already be stabbed to dead stabbed to death by my Spear," Maximus laughed sheathing his short sword. Adonis taught Maximus everything he knew about military warfare and weapon techniques. He bred Maximus to be a great warrior, one that is worthy for the Kingdom of Colchis.
"The Colchian armies are the best in all of Greece," Adonis said turning on his heel, some of his light blue chiton twirled behind him. Whenever Adonis turned on his heel, that was usually a sign that Maximus needs to follow him. "It said that Colchis warriors are descended from Hercules himself." Adonis said his voice booming through Maximus' home. Adonis was known for his deep and throaty voice that sounds like stone breaking.
"Yes father," Maximus said struggling to keep up with Adonis.
"Then know this my son," Adonis said walking towards the exit. "Anger and madness are brothers. Do not give in to anger for it'll lead to a quick decent into madness. In war, you are vulnerable to these emotions these are natural but you must be aware. Stand firm and let these emotion pass. Be at calm, let the battle start when it'll start and let it end when it'll end. You are not a soft, plump citizen of Tangea, you are a Colchian solider one that is bred for battle."
Maximus swelled on those words for a bit. The first phrase that Adonis said didn't sound like a Greek proverb but he let it go. "Of course father," he said. "Thank you for your words of wisdom."
Adonis smiled placing his massive hands on Maximus' shoulders. "I believe in you," he said. "Your mother does and your entire family. We believe that you can achieve anything, but don't give to anger and don't give in sloth. You may go."
Maximus exited his house and found himself wondering around the streets, his mind in a daze. Maximus didn't dare talk about his father about his families familial roots in Africa. The last time they talked about it, the two of them had a shouting match. Maximus still wondered about Africa. He's heard from the merchants that it's mostly arid with sand everywhere, however a Bedoan merchant informed Maximus that Africa was once a lush, tropical paradise. These Bedoans seemed to be strong people like Colchians, a tiny part of Maximus felt a little out of place. Colchians were decended from Hercules himself, but Maximus was decended from immigrants. Would Hercules accept Maximus as an adopted ancestor or something? Probably but Maximus wasn't entirely sure.

That same sunny morning, Adelpha had been painting and visiting with her mother, Althea, at their family homestead. Her father was off on yet another mission and the two women had passed the time quickly and unknowingly, painting away all the way into the afternoon. While Adelpha was currently working on a landscape of a warrior in mid-battle, Althea focused on touching up the walls of their home with fresco paint. Although Adelpha’s father, Leander, didn’t always approve of the two ladies painting murals on their household’s walls, Althea claimed it was for the well-being of their “creative spirit.”
That alone is why the young artist bonded with her mother and still did even now, into her budding adulthood. Once it came close to noon, Adelpha set down her paint brush and turned to glance at her mother. “Should I head down to the market to buy us some fresh ingredients for supper, mother?” The tall brunette glanced to her aging mother and the older woman turned to her daughter to reply to her, her own paint brush still in hand.
“Why, yes, dear, you should, but don’t take too long.” Her mother replied to her softly with a smile. Mother and daughter looked alike, although Althea’s long brown locks had streaks of gray running through it and her blue eyes had the gentle creasing of crow’s feet from her waning years. “And wear your sandals this time! I can’t stand when you go without them.”
Adelpha laughed softly to herself as she made her way towards the villa’s archway, leading out of the courtyard and towards the Upper Levels of her home, Colchis. Though, the young woman minded her mother’s words and slipped on her sandals first, before heading for the city.
Although the afternoon was still in its early hour and supper typically wasn’t for another several hours, the young woman craved the alone time to herself and think. It wasn’t much longer before she was about to leave for Taengea and the sooner, the better, she thought. Her graceful frame made its away down the upper levels of the city, her blue eyes thoughtful as the willowy brunette let her mind wander, letting her feet carry her towards the market.
Walking and wandering around the city was one of her favorite past-times, searching for new sources of inspiration and letting her mind drift. It was something Leander found irritating about his only daughter, but she still hadn’t told her parents of her plans to leave for Taengea and soon. But her father had left on yet another battle assignment and considering he was a hoplite, it would likely be a few more weeks before he returned home for a brief visit. Her thoughts about Leander quickly turned toward her best friend, Maximus and she felt her cheeks flush.
“I still haven’t found the best way to tell him how I feel.” Adelpha said softly to herself. The woman sighed as she thought about her best friend, that she had known since she was a young child. When it came to Maximus, Adelpha always found herself unable to tell him how she had always felt about him and this deeply puzzled her. Althea was always pushing her daughter to try and find a suitable husband, but it was a little more complicated for a timid soul like Adelpha. She deeply worried that if she ever told Maximus how she really felt, it would ruin their close friendship and that was something Adelpha prized more than anything.
During her reverie and walk, the young artist lost herself in her thoughts; that is, until she stumbled upon a familiar-looking face walking the same street as her and her blue eyes brightened with warmth. The willowy brunette tilted her head, watching Maximus walk towards her and she smiled in her friend’s direction as she spoke.
“Out for a walk, I see. Hello dear friend.” She spoke softly in greeting, but her blue eyes creased slightly with concern. Her friend’s expression definitely wasn’t all there, in that moment. “Is something wrong?” Adelpha approached her friend and gave a light squeeze to the warrior’s forearm, a brow arching curiously. It wasn’t like Maximus to be so out of sorts and she sensed this.

“Out for a walk, I see. Hello dear friend.”
Maximus heart stopped and he slowly turned around. "Adelpha!" he said feeling her hand touching his forearm. It felt soft and comforting. Adelpha and Maximus were best friends since childhood, when they first met Adelpha was a shy, sensitive child and it took Maximus a while to have her come out from her shell but once she did they became the closest of friends. Adelpha was always there for Maximus comforting him whenever he was sad and binding up his bruises after training. Maximus couldn't ask for a better friend.
“Is something wrong?" Adelpha said her tone filled with worry.
It was then that Maximus hugged Adelpha tight his eyes stinging with tears. Maximus hadn't seen Adelpha since he enlisted in the Fifth Phalanx two years ago. He seldom wrote to Adelpha dedicating his time and effort to fulfill his dream in becoming the best Colchian soldier. Maximus easily regretted that decision, while he bonded with his brothers they didn't understand him the way Adelpha could.
"I missed you!" Maximus said still hugging Adelpha. "I'm back from my tour against the Barbarians." Bile formed in Maximus mouth and he quickly swallowed it. "Gods, I've experienced my first battle. I can't get the images out of my head."
It all came out at a rapid pace, Adelpha probably didn't understand what he was talking about. Releasing her, Maximus rubbed the back of his neck. "You haven't changed a bit!" he grinned. "If you're wondering how long I've been back well I've only came back a week ago."
Maximus sighed looking at the ground. "I'm so sorry I didn't write as often as I could." he said. "Forgive me."

The lithe brunette blushed brightly, shades of pink and red crawling across her pale cheeks and spreading to her ears. Adelpha was always more than overjoyed to see her dear friend and she hadn’t seen him for so long, that she realized, she had missed his closeness and his presence. Although the embrace was received warmly by her, she had forgotten what his touch felt like and she certainly wasn’t ready to confess yet, in that second, how it made her feel. She cleared her throat softly with a slight smile and gently squeezed the large warrior giving her a hug. “Long time, no see, Maximus. It’s been far too long.” Adelpha spoke quietly and dear Apollo, she couldn’t help but notice how he had filled out over the years she hadn’t seen him. That certainly wasn’t helping the young woman in maintaining a straight face and though they had exchanged letters, it was entirely different to see how he had changed.
Of course, most things remained the same and that was his steadfast determination to becoming a dedicated and loyal soldier. She respected that about Maximus. He treated most with kindness, once his trust was earned and that was something Adelpha had never forgotten about her best friend. She missed Basil as well and her thoughts made her smile again, before she let Maximus go from her embrace. “I’m….happy to see you, too.” She spoke softly, a couple of tears forming in her own blue gaze and she listened to his words, before replying.
“How did it go? Win any glory and fame during those battles of yours? I was working on a painting, this afternoon, of a battle scene.” She laughed softly and smiled. “Guess I was thinking of you.” Her sapphire gaze softened and she gently offered another soft, comforting squeeze to her friend’s forearm. “I’m sorry those images likely follow you everywhere, I bet.” The artist was more than willing to listen and she knew it wasn’t easy for either Maximus or the other men to return from war, back into society. If anything, she was all too familiar. Her own father typically suffered from such nightmares, having to kill other men in battle and such dreams followed them back home, even months later.
She cleared her throat and straightened her hair once she was released from that comforting and warm embrace, the flush slowly fading from her cheeks and she made a bit of a face. “Now, hey, I have changed a little!” She protested playfully, a slight smile forming back on her lips and she bit back a laugh. “Though you are in trouble for not writing me often enough, I guess I can forgive you.” Her voice was soft, though playful, her blue eyes settling back on Maximus.

“Long time, no see, Maximus. It’s been far too long.” Adelpha said continuing to hug Maximus.
"Too long," Maximus said some bile once again forming in his throat and his eyes continuing to sting with tears. It felt right..... It felt great to be in the arms of his friend again Maximus missed her so much. Adelpha's smile, warmth and compassion filled Maximus' heart with joy as it always did. Adelpha was the first girl to accept Maximus' for who he was and not the curse he carried and stuck by him no matter what.
Maximus slowly stroked her smooth and soft skin before the two of them simultaneously released from each others embrace. As soon as Maximus saw Adelpha's face he noticed the tears falling from her face. The young soldier's heart sank he was so focused on being his career as a solider that he had forgotten why he fought. It was to protect the people of Colchis and more importantly the people he cared about. Maximus probably put Adelpha under a lot of stress, the last time they saw each other Adelpha was worried that this would be the last time they would see each other.
At that time, Maximus wasn't worried he tried to assure Adelpha that he'll come back either his shield or on it. It was his purpose as a soldier, to fight and die for Colchis and die gloriously. Looking back though, it was foolish to say such things to a person who was a close friend especially when Maximus was about to die.
"How did it go? Win any glory and fame during those battles of yours? I was working on a painting, this afternoon, of a battle scene.” Adelpha smiled. “Guess I was thinking of you.”
"If by fame and glory you mean build a bridge for traveling merchants?" Maximus said giving her a smile. "The only battle I fought was the growing boredom of building that blasted thing!"
Maximus didn't have the heart to tell Adelpha of the ambush by the Barbarians a few months ago. How he laid on the floor covered in a combination of Barbarian, his comrades and his own blood. How in what was supposed to be in his final moments, Maximus thought of good times he, Adelpha and Basil had instead of thinking of his kingdom. It was then, Maximus realized he didn't want to die gloriously, he wanted to see his family again, he wanted to see Adelpha again.
And here she was before him, prettier and more confident in herself yet still the same Adelpha Maximus has always known. Adelpha made a face something she always did whenever she teased Maximus. “Now, hey, I have changed a little!” She said. “Though you are in trouble for not writing me often enough, I guess I can forgive you.”
"Whew!" Maximus said pretending to wipe sweat from his brow. "I've barely managed to escape your wrath!" Maximus then stared into his friends blue eyes. "You have changed though," Maximus said. "You're much more confident and even grown more prettier than you were when we last saw each other." Maximus sighed. "I do miss those days though," he said. "Innocent times when we just lay on the grass and stare at the stars."
Maximus closed his eyes trying to get rid of the visions of the ambush in his head. "I don't want things to change," Maximus said trying to maintain his breathing. "Sometimes I just want those days back."
