Achilleas absolutely did not jump when a small hand suddenly tugged upon his, the Mikaelidas lord turning to find their shadow of earlier had caught up with them once more. A little taken aback by the hand holding, the lord glanced around before his gaze settled upon whom he was pretty sure was Theodora’s littlest sister. Why she was here and had decided to attach herself to his cousin and him he did not know, but Achileas could not even bring himself to be surprised for it seemed that this day was destined to try his patience. Rewrapped in her ridiculous scarf, the youngster was soon chatting away again, and Achilleas blinked in confusion at her words.
“I...what?!” He shot a glance at Stephanos because this child, this cherub-faced little Leventi girl was scolding him and he wasn’t sure if he was outraged or impressed. And what was with parents just letting their children scamper around unsupervised? For a moment he just stared at her, and then glancing back towards the race which was all but done. It couldn’t do any harm to show willing towards the girl, he decided, even after his dismal failure with Theodora earlier. With a huff, he shoved his wine at his cousin and turned to the little Leventi. He might come to regret this, but really, the day had been a catalogue of disasters anyway, so what was there to lose at this point.
“Come on then, you might just see the end” Achilleas muttered, lifting the girl easily up onto the perch of his shoulders so she could watch the last moments of the race. Settling her there he turned forwards again towards the beach where the horses could be seen thundering down towards the post demarking the end of the course. The noise of the crowd was increasing, agitated voices cheering or berating their chosen runners in the final push towards the finish line. Narrowing his gaze for it appeared Zacharias had lost the lead again, Achi wrapped his hands around Nana’s ankles to steady her. Perhaps this could be counted as atonement for having made that other one cry.
“Mayhaps your sister might be putting the Lords to shame” the young man observed to his lightweight burden, wondering exactly how that had transpired. He didn’t dare look at Steph, who he doubted would be overpleased that his brother had been beaten by a girl.

Nikos hoisted himself up into the tree easily enough, hurrying right behind Evangelina. Pieces of tree bark flaked off from where she clawed the tree as she climbed, and Nik - more than once - had to blink rapidly to rid his eyes of the debris. He sighed but did not say anything. He'd just gotten the girl to stop crying. He did not wish to be the reason she started up again. Luckily is didn't take long for them to get high enough in the tree so that he could survey the crowd. He settled on a sturdy branch, straddling it and locking his ankles together below. He pulled the acorns he'd gathered from the pouch at his waist and looked around for anyone suspect that may have thrown those rocks, eyes narrowed as he waited for the perpetrator to follow them to the tree. He hoped they would follow anyways. The races had started and the rock thrower may have gone to spectate instead.
'Lord Nikos, look at how well you can see the race from up here! Did you place any bets?'
Nik looked towards the beach where the races were now in full swing. Damn. Somewhat giving up on baiting their mystery assailant to show them selves, Nikos let himself admire the raw power of the running horses. "I did not get the chance to do so, I'm afraid. Though I would have bet on Prince Zacharius to win. He is a crowd favorite and an excellent rider, I must admit." Despite his own resentment for the Mikaelidas family possessing the crown, he had to admit even to himself that they possessed some good qualities. Nikos leaned back in his perch to rest his back against the trunk of the tree in which he sat, just a branch below the young Leventi girl.
'I am going to be just like Selene… you just wait and see…'
Nikos lifted his face to peer up at the girl. Her dirty face was tear stained, tree bark and twigs in her messily braided hair. But in that moment she was smiling, and had a fire in her eyes that left no doubt that Evangelina was determined to be just as daring and fierce as her older cousin out on the track. Nik's lips curled up in a wide smile as he let out a soft laugh. "I'm sure you will, Lady Evangelina. I have no doubt of that." He gave a wink, still smiling in that charming signature way of his.
Nikos returned his gaze to the race. It was really heating up out there. This really was a great spot to view the event. No heads in the way, no bustling to get closer. It was peaceful. His blue eyes grew wide and he sat up straighter. Were his eyes deceiving him, or was Lady Selene in the lead? He watched with bated breath as the young woman crossed the finish line ahead of all the men, including the Crown Prince! "Unbelievable," he muttered, with a smile on his lips. This was.. unprecedented. The prince had lost to a woman. While Nikos actually found this face quite hilarious, he wondered what repercussions this could have in the court in the coming days.

Lord Nikos & Lady Evangelina Up A Tree
Evangelina had always been a peculiar little girl, especially for a Leventi. Horses knew her better than people did, there’d never been any sort of question to that and anyone would admit it. Her dark chestnut colored hair was almost out of place and her eyes were still slightly too large for her face. The brown depths held a perceptiveness tinged with curiosity, intelligence, and perhaps a bit of rebellion. She’d have rather spent her time playing with the other farm children there at her father’s estate than most of the noble young ladies of her acquaintance. She could hold her own in a tussle rather than gracefully glide through the maneuvers required to dance beautifully. She climbed trees and rode horses and played with frogs and ruined her dresses more frequently then her mother would confess to. Even at this young age, she’d danced to her own rhythm.
Looking down at him as she’d asked the question if he’d placed a bet on the races. Was it possible that she was dreaming all of this up? Leaning her back against the wide trunk, her hand snuck a delicate pinch against her arm causing her to bite back a small yelp that she swallowed and smiled. It wasn’t a dream. Nikos was there in a tree with her. She’d known he was perfect for her.
‘I did not get the chance to do so, I'm afraid. Though I would have bet on Prince Zacharius to win. He is a crowd favorite and an excellent rider, I must admit.’
As he admired the horses galloping on the beach, she found him to be as interesting as the race and her too-large earthy eyes blinked curiously, "Do you always bet on the crowd favorite?" Her lips pursed and she remembered not to stare and looked back to the race, "You’d have lost your money though…" She watched the way the different riders handled the course but her faith in her cousin never wavered. "Go Selene," The pint-sized Leventi cheered before glancing back at Lord Nikos still feeling perplexed. "Lene had this race won the moment she settled onto her horse." She paused then explained, "Prince Zacharius is well mounted and an excellent rider too but his horse is almost carrying the weight of two riders in comparison to Selene’s. She’s also an excellent rider and well mounted on a Leventi stallion…" She bit her lip and shrugged, "But that’s just my opinion…"
Admitting she was going to be just like her cousin, she’d not expected to hear his agreement and he winked. He really winked at her. She chewed on her lip a little more and had to steady herself against the trunk to keep from wobbling off the branch. Maybe she should crawl to a little lower branch… besides Lord Nikos was just below her. Dropping herself almost like a monkey down from the branch to plop down on the branch next to him. She caught the last bits of the race and just smiled a little as her cousin pulled a head and crossed the finish line first.
Evangelina’s smile became a bit smug and she shrugged at him. “Told ya.” Dimples appeared in her cheeks as she looked up at him, “It’s not always the crowd favorite that is the best bet, my lord.”

'Do you always bet on the crowd favorite?' Nikos shrugged but nodded his head. "Usually. When I'm not participating in the race myself, that is." Occasionally he would place his bets on someone else that he felt had a better handle on winning the race, or just because he wanted to do something different. But really, for Nik, it wasn't always about winning money from the bet, but from the appearance and emphasis the public placed on the action itself. Many people would often times read much more into a bet placed on a particular individual than the fact that you won or lost that bet.
'You’d have lost your money though…'
The young baron smirked at this. "So it would seem, Lady Evangelina. That's alright though." Indeed he had the money to lose. Business was good for the Condos trade agreements, and this years harvest of the wine vineyards was promising for the next season. Nik may have not been a Leventi, decidedly the richest noble family in Taengea. But he was certainly not hurting for coin.
'Lene had this race won the moment she settled onto her horse.' Nikos lifted his brows and his face up to look at the young girl. "Is that so?" he commented, prompting her to continue. He knew why the Leventi woman had the race won, but he was curious to know what the girl thought. 'Prince Zacharius is well mounted and an excellent rider too but his horse is almost carrying the weight of two riders in comparison to Selene’s. She’s also an excellent rider and well mounted on a Leventi stallion… But that’s just 'my' opinion…' Nikos let the look on his face indicate that he'd learned something from her - in fact he'd already deduced just such a thing, but who dared to actually flat out beat a Crown Prince? Apparently a Leventi girl!
Evangelina swung herself down to a branch more level with his own perch just as the race was ending and her cousin crossed the finish line first. He wondered how Zacharius was going to react, if he would lose his temper for all to see because he lost to a woman. OH what a sight that would be! Nik mused.
'Told ya. It’s not always the crowd favorite that is the best bet, my lord.' Nikos tore his gaze from the happenings below and turned his attention of the girl he'd followed up a tree. The impish dimples in her cheeks as she proudly smiled up at him brought a wide smile to his own features. "Impressive. You really know your horses, don't you, Lady? Or did you perhaps have insider information and the race was just rigged?" This last part was clearly a tease as he laughed warmly. He wondered if those dimples would be something she would outgrow, or if she would still have them as she grew into herself. For while dimples on a child could be considered cute, dimples on a coyly smiling woman was something else entirely.

Lord Nikos and Lady Evangelina Sitting In A Tree
The question of ‘Why?’, burned in her brain but she managed to hold her tongue and continue to curiously examine him. Her lips pursed and her eyebrows had wrinkled as a quiet huff escaped her. He usually bet on the crowd favorites? Why? And why was it that he only did it when he was not participating in the race himself? Was he a lamb that went along with the crowd or a man who could stand on his own feet and choose his own path? It was probably odd for such a young girl to have decided ideas about people and their own paths but it was a hazard of growing up the daughter of a Leventi who was not Fotios.
Her fingers flexed into the bark of the tree causing it to crumble in her hand and providing a momentary distraction as she dusted the loose bark off of her hand. In her mind she’d imagined him up to be the most witty and devastatingly charming man in all of Greece so it wasn’t that far from a leap for her to draw up the conclusion that he was doing it in order to be liked. Most people didn’t like winners and it would be awfully hard to be devastatingly charming and witty if you were already having to convince people to like you. But, what about his money? That question did manage to slip from her lips.
‘So it would seem, Lady Evangelina. That's alright though.’
It was very perplexing that he smirked about that. The rich did not stay rich because they squandered their money… Every investment had to carry their own weight just like every member of the family had too. You had to be worthy to inherit greatness. She might have been confused by his methods but it didn’t stop her girlish heart from fluttering with a chest full of butterflies at his smile at her. Her brown eyes faltered downward as she bit her lip and a bright blush crept up her neck to her cheeks. As if to continue to impress him, she chatted about why Selene had been the correct choice.
His brows lifted but she didn’t think anything of it, ‘Is that so?’ So of course, the pint-sized Leventi indulged him with her opinions and of course his schooled features were easily seen only at face value. Pride welled up in her at having said something that impressed upon him her knowledge… Pride and maybe a tiny bit of arrogance.
Slipping down on to the nearby branch, she straddled the tree like she might have her pony, letting her colty legs dangle in the air. The fact that his attention had shifted away from the happenings after the race and were focused on her gave her arrogance a bit more confidence… the confidence to goad him a little bit about being right.
‘Impressive. You really know your horses, don't you, Lady? Or did you perhaps have insider information and the race was just rigged?’
Beaming a pleased smile at him, she was without a doubt clay in his hands to mold. A heavy huff was blown out from her and she gave the most unladylike roll of her eyes. “Oh, please!” She waved a hand dismissively, “There was never any need to rig that race. Selene was obviously the best choice out there.” Slanting indignant dark eyes to him, she gave him a look that she’d learned from one of her mother’s maids who was constantly at odds with the puckish girl. “Besides, all eyes were on this race… it’d be foolish to rig a race with so many watching.” It wasn’t exactly a denial that her family didn’t or couldn’t rig a race but more of an explanation that this particular race probably wasn’t rigged. It didn’t stop her from sliding a quick glance at Selene and her family then looking back at Lord Nikos and jutting out her chin, “I think you are just going to have to accept the fact that I know my horses.”

Lord Nikos and Lady Evangelina Sitting In A Tree
The question of ‘Why?’, burned in her brain but she managed to hold her tongue and continue to curiously examine him. Her lips pursed and her eyebrows had wrinkled as a quiet huff escaped her. ’Oh, please! There was never any need to rig that race. Selene was obviously the best choice out there.’
Nikos smiled, laughing under his breath, thoroughly enjoying the attitude of this fiery young Leventi. Oh, she was definitely going to be a handful as she got older. The Condos lord found himself looking forward to the grief this one would cause the Head of her House. ”Indeed, too many prying eyes. You’d never get away with it.” he agreed with her assessment, mirth in his tone as he mocked all seriousness. He also looked out over the people still gathered around the finish line for a moment, his eyes narrowing briefly. But his attention was pulled back to the defiant tone of the girl in the tree with him.
’I think you are just going to have to accept the fact that I know my horses.’
His brows lifted at this and his head tilted to the side as he studied her. That chin stuck out, the proud look on her face and the fire in her eyes. There was much promise to the woman she would turn out to be in a few years. ’Well, you are a Leventi. Even if I disagreed with that assessment, you’d never let me hear the end of it,” he laughed, warm and rich. When he sobered, he peered down to the ground a few yards below them. He pursed his lips considering the course to take to climb out of this tree, as it seemed their earlier assailants were not going to make an appearance. But that thought reminded him of the fact that Evangelina had most likely seen the one that had thrown the rocks! He looked back to her; his visage serious as he considered her. ”Lady Evangelina… can you tell me who threw those pebbles earlier?” He wasn’t sure what’d he actually do with the information, but depending on who it was… the right ear made aware of the incident could perhaps see retribution for the assault on a child, a Lady in her own right and a member of a prominent noble house.

Nikolias had to admit he very nearly always enjoyed races. He largely preferred outdoor activities to indoor ones when the ability to choose arose.
He even- in his own way- had to admit that having Selene win the race was interesting for the gossip fodder if nothing else. Gods knew most noble social events were boring enough.
He did not, however, expect his own son to go off to who knew where. Nikos usually seemed to enjoy these races, at least it looked like it might be so from the amount of money he sometimes bet.
A little after the race, he excused himself for awhile as politely as he could and went to stretch his legs rather than leaving just yet.
And that was when he spotted them, as he passed by a tree.
Nikos in a tree might have been considered unusual enough considering the type of clothing and fine fabric Nikolias usually saw his son wearing.
But the sight of Nikos in a tree with Evangelina of Leventi bothered Nikolias for more than one reason. He was always aware that his rivals- who he could at times fight with about anything from court issues to who was entitled to the better watering areas could potentially misunderstand anything where he or his family were involved with theirs- and he could more often than not do the same, it seemed. But in the case of the young lady with his son, Nikolias was unaware if Evangelina was yet a biological woman. She could be close to being one for all he knew, but because in some respects she still looked like a child to Nikolias, the situation of seeing his twenty-year-old with an eleven-year-old girl bothered him. Nikolias walked as close to the tree as possible before yelling up at his son.
"What in the name of Hades is going on up there?" He felt like the vein is his forehead was going to burst from stress. Even if it was an innocent conversation- which Nikolias personally doubted, knowing his son's way with young women- the Leventis might possibly assume otherwise.

Normally, ten-year-old Celine could care less for her father's betting. But today, she'd wanted to come. She loved horse races, and hoped to have a horse of her own someday- whenever that would be.
After the beginning of the month, she was unsure her family would ever get out of Taengea fast enough for her to consider ever having any kind of a fulfilling life again. But her eleventh birthday was next week. They'd said it was a summer storm, and she didn't really know- there could have been other houses also damaged.
But her father seemed to suspect something different, and was trying, as quickly as possible, though it would still take some time, to come up with a plan to move them to Colchis. Since earlier this year, Celine's lungs seemed to have shrunk. The physician recommended somewhere warm to see if exposure to steam could help. And to top it all off, whatever had caused that fire, Rhais was half-deaf now from a hurt face when a piece of wood had collapsed.
But today, she wanted to forget, and for awhile, she actually was. The fact that it was crowded might have been considered reasonably good cover for them, and life had to go on sometime, if slowly. The air was refreshing, although the grass made her wheeze a little. And when Lady Selene of Leventi crossed the finish line, Celine cheered. Not even her father had expected that! For that matter, she hadn't either, though she always hoped that someday a woman would win a horse race and she'd be there to see it.
Maybe things were going to be okay. For now, anyway. It had to be some kind of sign, right?
Celine really hoped so.
When the race was over, though, she had to grin at the sight of Lady Evangelina in the tree. Celine kind of liked Lady Evie- she seemed to be like her in a lot of ways, though Celine only liked to climb shorter trees so as not to hurt herself.
Still, she somehow wished she could be up there with her. Maybe some time off the ground would help her forget all that had happened on the ground lately.
She might have thought about asking Lady Evie if she could join her,but then she saw Nikos of Condos.
Well that was weird. Except maybe it wasn't if you were going to kiss someone.
Were they going to kiss? As of right now, Celine couldn't imagine herself kissing anybody! Maybe not ever. Until she got married. And even then, she wasn't sure she would like it. But that didn't stop this scene from being interesting to her. She didn't want to be seen watching in case Evie didn't want to be seen, but she walked toward the next closest tree and got behind it to see if she could get a good view of what was going on.

Leaving Lord Nikos with his father as she drags Celine off with her towards the race contestants.
The corners of his mouth turned up into a smile at her generating a wider, brighter, lopsided smile from Evangelina. Images of the two of them holding hands picking the petals of daisies together under a large oak tree flooded her mind. He would love her one day. She just knew it. They’d raise horses and drink wine and all of her cousins would be envious of how happy she was with him. The differences between their ages were forgotten. She’d get older. She was as sure of this fate as she was of anything.
‘Indeed, too many prying eyes. You’d never get away with it.’
A bright pink blush rose up to her cheeks and she shyly looked away and shrugged. They could have gotten away with it. She was sure of that too but the risk didn’t equal the payoff. She knew better than to say that though. Capturing her bottom lip between her teeth, she chewed on it and turned her dark, earthy eyes towards her cousin who’d just won the big race of the day.
‘Well, you are a Leventi. Even if I disagreed with that assessment, you’d never let me hear the end of it.’ There was a warm, rich laugh and her eyes slid back over to him and a giddy feeling of warmth spread through her. How had she ended up so lucky that he’d noticed her and instead of shunning her for the many reasons he could have, he seemed to appreciate her. ‘Lady Evangelina… can you tell me who threw those pebbles earlier?’
His voice had sobered and he was looking at the ground. She caught her lip between her teeth and shifted uncomfortably on the limb. She didn’t want to point any fingers at Prince Irakles’ eldest son, in fact, she’d rather forget about the entire thing but Lord Nikos was asking her and after his attention she felt a certain sense of loyalty to him now. But… Her dark eyes turned down to the ground and she was about to answer when she saw him.
Her eyes widened and she pressed herself up against the trunk of the tree. It was Lord Condos! If he saw her he’d tell her uncle and father about her being up a tree. Uncle Fotios was not going to be happy about hearing that after her little stunt under the table, and to make matters worse she was up in the tree with Lord Nikos. Maybe he wouldn’t see her…
But that wasn’t the way fate would treat her today… her dark eyes met with Lord Condos’ gaze and her breathing stopped. He’d seen her.
‘What in the name of Hades is going on up there?’ It was barked out like some sort of wild dog that just had his tail stepped on. Her body jumped and she almost fell off the limb. Unaware that Mistress Celine was nearby, she shot a quick, almost panicked look at Lord Nikos before she shimmied on down the tree to face Lord Condos. Curtsying, “Watching the races, my lord, but I think I see my cousin’s waving to me. Please excuse me.” Shifting a goodbye glance to Lord Nikos, before she started to run off except she almost plowed right into Mistress Celine.
“Oh! Mistress Celine! It’s a pleasure to see you again. Did you enjoy the races?” Shooting another glance over her shoulder at Lord Condos and his son, she swallowed and without asking she linked arms with the girl close to her own age despite not knowing her that well. Anything was better than being glared at by that Condos Lord! “Lady Selene rode quite fiercely didn’t she… Let’s go congratulate her!”

Partly, Celine had wanted to congratulate Lady Selene anyway, but had felt uncomfortable just going up to her, so she gladly scampered off to join Evie in congratulating the winner of the race.
Meanwhile, Nikolias was so angry he could barely talk to Nikos at all.In his mind, it mattered very little if it was Evie's doing or no, and maybe it wasn't. But Evie was eleven. Nikos was old enough to know better.
"What. Were. You. Doing?" Nikolias thundered at his son. One could practically have seen steam rising from his ears. "If there are any people you should not be speaking with, most of them carry the house name of Leventi! I cannot say I quite blame any stray children for trying to spy on you! Most children seem to think kissing is either funny or disgusting, and when it comes to a Comdos kissing a Leventi, they just might have a point if they think kissing is disgusting! And do you have any idea what Fotios of Leventi is going to think? I shudder to imagine it." He and Fotios were probably not exactly on bad terms, as two senators often had to get along for the sake of continuing a relatively stable government. But the two of them were not exactly friends, either. For the sake of being able to discuss matters like the current situation he was upset about between their houses, he almost wished they were. That being said, he was well aware that regardless, Fotios would probably understand the seriousness of the situation he and his son were now discussing.
"And if you were not kissing, what exactly were you doing? Do you have anything to say for yourself?"

Nikos had been waiting for the girl to answer his question of who had attacked them with the rocks. But before the girl could utter a sound, his father's voice reached his ears. He closed his eyes, grimacing, and let out an audible sigh. He could hear the agitation already in his father's tone. Before he could even begin to quell the lord's worries, however, Lady Evangeline was already offering up a reason and making a getaway.
'Watching the races, my lord, but I think I see my cousin’s waving to me. Please excuse me.'
Smart. Save yourself. He couldn't blame the girl in the least as he swung a leg over the branch upon which he sat and began the decent down the tree, his father's tirade reaching him.
'What. Were. You. Doing?'
"It was perfectly innocent father. It was just a better view of the races is all, as the Lady already explained." Nik had reached the lowest branch and he swung himself down to the ground. Nikolias hadn't seemed to have heard his words, though, so he made to brush the dirt and tree bark from his clothes, only to grimace and mutter a curse under his breath. There was a small tear at the hem of his sleeve that would have to be mended.
'Most children seem to think kissing is either funny or disgusting, and when it comes to a Comdos kissing a Leventi..'
"We were not kissing, Father!" The younger Condos could feel his own anger rising now. His blood boiling. Did his father really think so little of him? That he would kiss a child!? He narrowed his eyes on his father. But his father once again just kept talking. Yelling even. When the man finally seemed to draw breath and give Nik a chance to explain, Nikos was fuming. "If you must know, I was trying to comfort the poor girl. Fotios himself introduced me to her. And when he walked away, the poor girl was hit in the face with some pebbles. She ran off crying. I was simply making sure she was alright. We were in the tree, scanning the crowd for the assailant when the race started." Nikos shook his head angrily and bowed to his father. "But from now on, I will steer clear of injured and crying Leventi girls. Wouldn't want anyone to make the wrong assumptions now would we?" Nikos stood straight and again and turned on his heel. "Pardon me my lord, I'm due back in Doralis." He nearly growled the words as he walked away.

"Wait a moment." Nikolias made ready and followed his son just a little ways. "If it really is as you say," He said, half doubting it, but willing to not cause so much of a fuss now in order to potentially avoid Fotios. "I can understand your reasons. That being said, Lord Fotios will most likely suspect something different no matter what he is told- probably especially by either of us. But we don't necessarily have to tell him, if, that is, he was not already told. Just be careful in the future. If it had been anyone else but me walking by, your reputation- not to mention mine, as your father- could have been ripped to shreds. Anyone should be free to think -and only think- what they like as long as those involved with the situation know the whole truth. But with that being said, I know very few people, regardless of status, who are known far and wide for keeping their opinions to themselves." He nodded as he heard Nikos say he was going to head back to Doralis. "Perhaps that's for the best. I suppose I will see you at some later point, then." Though whether or not Nikos would want to come home to see him was debatable at this point, and Nikolias guessed Nikos would have answered in the negative. At times, Nikolias could not help but envy his son his life in Doralis, though. It must be much better and both more interesting and more relaxing than sitting around in court all day.
Well, then. If that was all, Nikolias was going to enjoy whatever other time he could spend in the sunshine today. When he got back to court, he knew the time outdoors would once again be fairly rare.

Stephanos roared in frustration, red faced and furious with Zacharias for losing. He balled his hands into fists and growled under his breath, glaring back once he heard a high pitched voice. “That was quite rude of you to just leave me there, I hope you know. My sister is racing today, mind you, and I made all this effort to come here to see it... Now, if you don't very well mind, I would very much appreciate a lift.” He sighed through his nose, rolling his eyes, but Nana had managed to curb that momentary fit of temper on his part by annoying it out of him.
He turned around, unwilling to watch his far more decorous brother giving Selene a graceful win by holding the woman’s hand up. As such, he missed the bard shoving himself in with his betters, which would have grated hard on the very last of Stephanos’s nerves.
Achilleas didn’t seem inclined to be tolerant of Nana, either, but there, Stephanos was wrong, it seemed. His cousin shot him a twin look of consternation that was mirrored on Stephanos’s own face, but then shoved wine into Stephanos’s hands. Frowning in amazement, Stephanos watched Achilleas bend down, pick Nana up, and place the girl on his shoulders so that she could see. Though, now that the race was over, Stephanos wasn’t entirely sure that the little Leventi girl was going to see anything important; except maybe that she could boss the two of them around.
“As much fun as babysitting is,” his scathing tone intentionally loud enough to get Achilleas’s attention, “I’m going to go taunt Zacharias for losing to Selene. Achilleas? Feel like dragging my dear brother through the mud?” Zacharias rarely lost in anything and never, ever, in a chariot race unless it was intentionally thrown in someone’s favor. The loss of this race was just so galling that even Stephanos couldn’t leave his elder brother alone. He had to rub it in, partially to spur Zacharias not to make such a thing a habit. He waited for his cousin and then went off in search of the Crown Prince, intending to wait until the man was back on the sidelines and away from the crowd. What. A. Day.

With the crowds of spectators mingling with that of the contestants in the raise, swarming to offer congratulations or commiserations for their performances, Fotios looked around to note that his brother, happy entertainer of the masses that he was, was spreading his arms wide.
"Please, my friends!" The man called across the heads of the entries and their friends. His arms were spread wide and the smile of his face was just as broad. "Please allow me, as baron of Macendia and a member of the House of Leventi who have funded this event so generously, invite you to my grounds of my private estate where food and wine and has been arranged."
There was a cheer amongst the crowds and Fotios rolled his eyes.
It didn't surprise him that Georgios would open his gates and doors to all high and low, using the social event to make connections with both the nobles and the common born folk that his lands relied so upon. Despite his personal distaste for mingling with anyone of lower birth than himself, Fotios could well see the advantage for such things - how the farmers and toilers of Georgios' region would work harder and longer for a baron that they legitimately liked; who offered free wine and food once a year at such festivities as these.
But it didn't stop the Head of the House of Leventi immediately picturing the churned-up grounds of the pretty estate and how the ramshackle public would leave the entire place a mess. Yet, if Georgios thought it would help him in his governing of the lands and it was something that he wished to do, he was far pressed to deny it.
Whilst Fotios was Head of the House, there were battles that you chose to fight and others where it was better to allow the autonomy of those you worked with. Too tight a hold upon subordinates only led to them choking and flailing to get away.
So, Fotios said nothing but nodded in polite acknowledgement for the Leventi funds that had gone into the event and then simply followed the crowds back up the dunes. He paused long enough to gesture to his daughter and ensure that she and any of his family were safely away from the shoreline, before they made their way back to the Lord Georgios' estate and prepared to take advantage of his overtly generous hospitality.
