Selene was anxious to be off the boat and onto solid land. After more than a month of travel, she was torn about her feelings. Part of her was glad to be home, to be with her family and with her sisters. She was happy to be there for them, to support them as they started their new lives. She missed her father and mother, missed the freedom of riding on Serenn. Her life on the island was perfect, was exactly what she had grown to love. Her uncle’s home was mostly rebuilt, as far as she heard, so it was likely that her life was soon to return back to the normal she was used to.
On the other hand, the looming, silent threat of the Creed haunted her dreams nightly. Selene could master the thoughts of past events, as Vangelis had once told her to do. But an unknown future? That was something she felt helpless against. Her nightmares centered around her loved ones. Pia’s dead, Stephanos’s head on a spike. There was too much to worry about, too much to handle. Being away from it all was healing for her. She had been able to clear her mind, to focus on other things. But now, as she got closer, the nightmares were worse.
The day prior to her landing, she’d received a letter from Pia, diverting her from Serenn to visit her in her new home. It had been a request, but she wasn’t about to turn down her queen, even if she was her sister. So as they pulled into port, it wasn’t surprising to see the Royal Family’s carriage waiting for her. Dressed in one of the fine chitons she’d purchased in Athenia, Selene was dressed to see a royal. Jo had set her hair as best she could on the vessel, fixed jewels to her wrist and sat with her as she road to the palati.
It was an odd feeling, to be the one visiting and not the other way around.
Zacharias had been stoic, serious and had seemed fairly indifferent in who he married. But, as Selene had always been led to believe, she was to be his Queen. His death and Pia’s marriage to Stephanos had completely shifted her own future. But for the eldest Leventi, she felt no ill-will to her sister. She deserved to be happy, and her child deserved to be legitimized by the king.
Some would have thought her jealous of Olympia, but in reality, any jealousy was more from her sisters new found happiness and not from her own unknown fate.
Riding through the city, it was good to see things were being quickly rebuilt. She was sure that her uncle was helping to fund it to move it along. No money could be made in a broken economy, she knew. Almost all trace of the fire and blood had been removed, but the memories of her fearful escape with the princess was still fresh. She tossed the blinds closed, not wanting to see anymore.
The ride to the Palati didn’t take long, and soon Selene found herself being escorted to the private gardens of the Queen. They were beautiful, peaceful and the very image of home she needed to see. The leaves were beginning to change, and she was glad for a shawl as the chill settled into the air. She took a seat on the bench, a small basket of gifts next to her as she waited.
Suddenly, she was incredibly anxious, ready to see her sister for the first time in more than a month.

Ever since she had heard that Selene was on her way back to Taengea, Olympia had been watching and waiting hoping every ship that arrived was the one that bore her sister home to her. Since she'd last seen her eldest sister everything in her life that could have changed had been altered in some way. Resting her hand on the ever growing swell of her stomach, Pia was dressed in a dark green chiton with a black armband to show her mourning, her black curls twisted and piled up beneath a black veil and simple gold band to hold all in place.
She couldn't move as quickly as she might have before, but the moment a servant approached to tell her that the message to her sister had been delivered and the Lady Selene was on her way, Pia jumped into action. Sandals were slipped on her feet and tied up before she was helped to a stand once more. If nothing else she was looking forward to having her body back to do things for herself once this child made his appearance. With guards at her back she made her way to the garden.
"Selene..oh thank the gods."
Selene looked well at first glance, and the young queen was filled with relief. She hadn't really seen much of her sister since the incident in the circus, and after her travels to Athenia and Colchis she had been constantly worried. Opening her arms as she approached the older woman, Pia hugged her sister tightly to her for a long moment before holding her back and looking over her to check for any sort of injuries or distress.
"You look well, how were your travels?"

As she sat and waited for her sister, she fiddled with the dark folds of her plum chiton. Selene had opted into her own mourning band as well, as her new brother-in-law’s father and brother had been the ones murdered. Most of the city had donned them as well. During her travels, she had opted out of wearing it, simply because she hadn’t wanted to bring focus to her own mourning. Now, back in her kingdom, it felt important to have it on.
But she had opted out of a veil, as it was not conducive to travel.
The basket at her side carried gifts brought for her sister from her travels. Garments for the little prince, fine chitons and veils for her, a knife from Colchis for Stephanos.
As soon as she saw her sister, she stood. Selene knew she should have given her a curtsy, but she let decorum fall in favor for joy in being reunited. She hugged her tightly, refusing to cry at the sight of her. She looked so good, healthy with her growing belly. The blonde was a bit tanner than she had been, having spent more time in the sun than she had in a long time. And Pia looked regal.
Beautiful.
She laughed, pressing a kiss to each cheek. “I am glad to be home, sweet sister! Although i will be content to never set foot on a boat for that long again.” Carefully adjusting the folds of her sister’s chiton, Selene was grinning brightly. “I was surprised to be rerouted, but glad for it. My heart is happy to see you happy and well-settled.” Tugging her sister down to the bench, she squeezed her hands. “Tell me how you’ve been first. You can hear of my journey after.”

Olympia clung to her eldest sister perhaps a bit longer than was proper, but it didn't matter to her what other people thought and said in this moment. She was just glad to have Selene home again. If anyone could calm her and bring her a center of peace, it was absolutely the blonde woman in her arms. Especially now that it felt as if there was danger at every turn. She had tried to relax into her role, tried to learn everything she could from the dowager queen, but with the coronation around the corner she had begun to have nightmares. Memories, really. Of the arena, of the knife to her throat and the men who had wanted to kill her and the men she had grown close to.
"I'm well, as well as can be expected anyway. It grows harder to move about and more difficult to dress every day it seems. He never stops growing."
Dropping her hand to her stomach affectionately, Pia smiled broadly as she felt that small flutter within that meant her son was moving. Perhaps he wished to say hello to his aunt, or was disgruntled at the amount of sitting she had been doing all day. He always seemed to prefer when she was up and moving about, a good deal like his father in that way.
"Someone wants to greet you, I think."
She took her sister's hand with a smile, pressing it to the place where she had last felt him move and gave a soft little tap to draw his attention. As if on cue a foot or fist responded and Pia gave a laugh. Though at the moment she was calm and smiling, there was anxiety always building within her like a wave. What if it was a girl, what if someone tried to harm them. What would happen once she gave birth, would someone try to kill her child like they had murdered others of his family? Would she be next?

There was something about being reunited with her family. After months of the difficult dreams and unknown futures, it was calming to be able to hold her sister in her hands. And it know that she was safe and well. There was plenty of things that were still to be determined, but at least in this moment, they were together. So she didn’t rush the hug, didn’t try to remind her that a Queen shouldn’t show so much emotion. No, there was no reason to remind her sister of the lessons they had both learned so well. There would be time for that kind of thing later.
For now, she relished in the familiar that was her sister.
She beamed, “I have brought you dozens of new chitons, all which allow for growth until the little prince is born, and will all still be fashionable once you regain your figure.”
Selene didn’t expect her sister to bring her hand to her belly, but when she did, her heart swelled with a joy she didn’t know she could feel. As a child, her mother often toddled around pregnant. And there was a happiness in pressing the hand to the belly of your mother holding your family. But there was something completely different in seeing your sister, in feeling her child move under you hand.
She let out a soft sigh, so wholly happy to be back. Selene’s next action was unexpected. But she dropped to her knees, placing a hand on both sides of her sisters growing belly. “Hello, Little Prince. We haven’t been formally introduced, by I’m your auntie. And I feel that it is my duty to tell you that you are about to come into a world where so many people will love you. But, you should know that I shall be your favor. Don’t let Theo tell you otherwise.” She smiled, pressing a kiss into her stomach before standing again.
“Should we stay here? Or would you feel more comfortable in your quarters, sweet Pea?” She asked, looping her arm through hers as she did.

She didn’t want to let go. It had been such a long time since she had seen her sister and held her properly, letters weren’t good enough after twenty five years of growing and being together nearly every day. When the hug finally did break, Pia held her at arms length to check her over furtively before giving a nod. Tanner than usual, but in good health.
Pia clapped in giddy excitement as Selene mentioned the gifts, eager to see what her sister had discovered and to hear of her adventures. Not to mention, as she grew she had less and even less to wear that felt appropriate for the court. Nasty words and rumors had been spreading about, mostly to do with her and how she was a whore, a social climber and opportunist. Some even whispered that her child was not Stephanos’, though no one seemed to know who else it could have been. It was hurtful to hear, and though she didn’t want to be seen as a coward it kept her mostly to herself.
Beaming as Selene dropped down to her knees, Pia laughed as the little prince made his presence known, shifting and giving a kick beneath his aunt’s hand. This was how she had expected pregnancy would go, with family and love and excitement all around instead of fear and uncertainty. They were both strong and happy, with the coronation approaching rapidly their place would soon be cemented and they would never need fear again.
”I think he knows quite well. Theo hasn’t been by.” she tried to disguise the hurt in her voice that none of their family except her parents had been up to the palace to see her since her marriage. ”Evie writes, and Nana sometimes when she can be bothered. But it’s been very lonely, Lene.”
Pia straightened, gesturing for her sister to rise and join her. ”Outside I think. If you don’t mind. Being able to move around in fresh air is nice.”

Life had taken a very strange turn for all of them. Selene never expected to have traveled to the other Kingdoms, never expected to consider all the royal families as friends. Now, standing her with her pregnant queen of a sister, she wished she could slow down time, to enjoy these moments longer. Instead, she stood, smiling at Pia. “Theo hasn’t been by? At all?” That seemed so unlike her sister. But her own upcoming wedding must have been keeping her busy. “I’m sure as soon as she settled with Achilleas, she will be here.”
Perhaps she would speak with Theo, address the matter outright.
She gently weaved her arm through her sister’s, guiding her back to the bench where the basket sat. “I have a dozen chitons, which one of your maids already took up to your room. Lots of extra material to allow for a growing belly. I figured you couldn’t have too many, and we can pass them around as the rest of us carry our sons, too.” She moved the basket in between them, allowing her to see the stacks of raw silk she had brought back. “I thought you might like some custom nightgowns and robes with this. There is lace, too.” She said, finding the folded white material to show her.
She pulled out a hand carved wooden rattle, the words “little one” were carved in, then painted a deep red. “I found this amazing little woodworker while in Midas. I sat with him for an afternoon while he made it.” She shook it gentle, the sound of small pebbles clinking around inside. “See the horses?” She turned it, showing off the intricately carved horses.

"No, I imagine she's been very busy preparing for her wedding. It's strange, our children will be cousins twice over."
Pia laid her head on her sister's shoulder for a moment as they moved back to the bench, clapping her hands eagerly at the sight of the basket. She loved gifts, both giving and receiving, and especially now that the gifts focused around her son she was even more excited. It made it all real, that the nursery which had been unused in the palace for many years was now being opened and cleaned. New furnishings and curtains were being hung and she had been meeting with the nursing staff that Elise had recommended.
The silks were beautiful and she lifted them with many oohs and ahhs, mind already racing with the gowns and robes she could fashion from them. Once her body returned to its usual shape. Every day she felt heavier and wider, it was harder and harder to move and her feet had started to swell when she stood for too long. Her mother and Desma reminded her that it was entirely normal, but that didn't change the discomfort.
"Oh Selene...it's wonderful." The rattle was the first gift for the baby himself, and the carvings were exactly what the son of a Taengean king would need. The little horses, the painted name, it brought tears to her eyes and she had to wave a hand before her face to try to stop them from falling. Taking the little rattle she gave it a shake and laughed through her misty eyes. Soon tiny hands would be shaking it and laughing, happy with the gift his aunt had brought him.
"He'll love it. I can't believe this is all happening."

Selene has been in touch with Emilios a bit on her journey, the wedding farther from her mind than it should have been. But she had done her best to be attentive to her sister while she was away, stocking a chest with beautiful linens for her home as well as dresses fit for a baroness. “She’s always been a little harder to get to open up. I’m sure a part of it is because she doesn’t want you to think she’s stealing your thunder.” Perhaps it was just that, that Theo was trying to lay low so that Pia could enjoy her rise to Queen.
Theo would get her time in the sun soon enough.
Her joy in the gift, especially the rattle, warmed her heart. “I am pleased you like it. I wasn’t sure if the silver or the wood was the better choice, but this just proves I picked right.” She couldn’t help but beam a bit, pleased at how much her sister appreciated the thought.
“How are you doing? Be honest with me, Sweet Pea. Not being able to care for you during this transition has been far more rough than I thought it would be.” Her admission sounded a bit out of place, for she had just finished a whirlwind adventure that anyone would have wished for. Her duty had always been to her family, and she had always taken that responsibility seriously. “Are you settling in?”

Olympia nodded, still turning the little rattle over in her hands and examining how fine the worksmanship on it was. It would be perfect, she could already imagine tiny fists wrapped around it, gurgling coos of enjoyment as it shook, and no doubt a trip across the room or ten when a tiny temper found that throwing something was necessary. It was hard to remember sometimes with all of the changes that had upended her life in the past few months that Theo was dealing with her own things. A betrothal, the house being set ablaze with her in it during the circus raid, none of these things were easy to deal with alone and she hadn't exactly been the most patient and attentive sister herself during it. She felt a slight pang of guilt as she turned back to her eldest sister.
"You're right, again as always. I suppose I may have been neglectful myself with everything that has happened. It isn't easy for any of us at the moment. So many changes."
Giving the rattle another shake in Selene's direction with a wrinkle of her nose and a slight laugh, Pia held it to her chest before finally settling it atop the other gifts. She had to take a moment to think before she was able to speak, wondering how honest she could be and how much she ought to hide so as not to worry anyone. Of all people she trusted Selene, there was never a question of that, but her pride was a factor that tended to keep her secrets close.
"It's very different. Not what I expected, but I'm settling." The cheeriness in her voice was for those nearby that might be listening before she took the blonde sister's hand with a gentle squeeze. A smile remained in place as if she were talking about the weather.
"There are people at court who say I'm just an opportunist, a social climber. And those that say I'm a whore. That my baby isn't Stephanos'. But there are some who are kind too."

While Selene may not have been the confidant of the family like Theo was, it didn’t mean that she wasn’t observant. She had been full of herself most of her life, but her concern had always been her sisters and their happiness. As she grew older, her focus shifted from herself as the center to her family, doing her best to support them while enjoying what being the Eldest Leventi meant. Her advice as a teen had been childish, far different from her attitude now. So it wasn’t surprising that both sisters had focused on their own lives, as they were both hectic. One was adjusting to being Queen and the other was trying to prepare for a wedding. It was a lot to take in for both of them. “Don’t not blame yourself. We’ve all barely had a chance to catch our breathe after the festival. Now that it’s all almost settled, we should be able to go settle into this new normal.”
She watched her sister carefully, a little surprised that she wasn’t able to speak freely in her own home. Thinking back on Colchis, where Vangelis had promised that no matter what was said, it would be kept private. A part of her had assumed that it would be that way in all kingdoms, but perhaps the change of reigning monarch hadn’t provided time to make sure she could speak freely. But how could she address the issue when she was certain that Pia didn’t feel like she could speak openly? Her lip slipped in between her teeth, obviously concerned for her sister.
It wasn’t fair that she wouldn’t be able to say what she wanted here.
Selene took a cue from Pia, grasping her hand tightly. Her face was light, hiding the sadness she felt for her younger sister. “People talk out of jealousy. You shouldn’t listen to them. I never do.” Having been blessed by Aphrodite, her looks had almost always been something that was talked about. But more often than not, people spoke out of hate and jealousy, putting her down to make themselves feel better. It took her a long time to stop worrying about the court drama and to ignore the way people talked about her. “They want to be queen, or want to make themselves feel better at the cost of your own feelings.” She leaned in, pressing a kiss to her cheek, but mostly to whisper in her ear. “It is hard to see others succeed when you do not always agree with the outcome. Chalk most of it up to grief— they did just lose their king.” She pulled back, sighing softly.
Guilt washed over her, knowing she should have been at her sister’s side to stop the gossip before it started. She felt like she’d abandoned her family for a trip around the kingdoms. As much as she had enjoyed her trip, and the connections she had made, Selene had left her family to pick up the pieces without her. And as eldest, she had failed her responsibility to them. “I should have been her, Pia. I’m sorry.”

She felt tears stinging at her eyes, she had been struggling so much with adjusting to this new life and she hadn't properly realized it until she'd spoken the words aloud to her sister. Any emotional outbursts had been attributed, no doubt rightly, to her pregnancy but there was still an underlying constant fear. Fear that she would lose her family, that something would happen to Stephanos and leave her with nothing. Terror at the thought of being the next one with her head on a pike as Zenon's had been. The cultists had proven they could get to one king, what would be different about striking at them now. It was nightmares like this that kept her awake at night, screams of terror soothed by Desma and played off once again as a symptom of her pregnancy.
The further along she got, the less it seemed anyone saw her. They only focused on her stomach and the expectations that rested on the child within. If it was a boy all of their hopes and prayers were answered and the Mikaelidas line would continue on, she would have been a good choice as wife and queen. If gods forbid it was a girl, her place would be as precarious if not more so. People already said Stephanos ought to set her aside and find a royal bride instead, claimed that the need for an heir was not so urgent that he needed to marry below himself and a Leventi at that. Pia knew the reputation of their family, had always been proud of it before. Now though it was just another thing that was being used to hurt her.
"No, no Lene I'm glad you got to have your adventures. You're right, no doubt it is grief and trying to become accustomed to new rulers."
Olympia smiled as her sister kissed her cheek, squeezing her arm and laying her head against the older girl's shoulder for a moment as they walked along. It was nice to have the familiar comfort of home once again, though she longed for the gaggle of Leventi girls to surround her as they always had before. Perhaps before the coronation they could have a night together once more.
"Now. Tell me of your voyage. Why did you stay so long in Colchis? I thought it was merely a brief visit."

If anyone despises gossip, it was Selene. Spending as much time in Court as the Leventi girls did, they were exposed to it far more often than others. And for the Eldest girl, she only listened to what mattered. And more often than not, none of it did. She usually kept close to her sisters, directing the conversation towards people who were far more trustworthy. So to know that her sister was feeling the heat of their jealousy so fully hurt her heart. She wanted nothing more than to keep her out of the public eye, to protect her from their horrible words.
But she couldn’t. Olympia was a Queen now. And while she may not have had the same focused training from their parents on what it took to be a ruler, Pia was strong and a quick learning with a good heart. She would do fine, once the storm of hormones subsided. Her mother had always pressed the importance of a safe haven. There was absolutely no reason to let anyone see her true feelings. But she would need to find one person on whom she could safely decompress with. And Selene was more than willing to be that for her sister.
Perhaps she would have to stay in court for longer than she had planned. As much as she wanted to go home, to be around her mare and the security of her home, Pia needed her more.
“The unrest will be put to ease once the babe is born. Then, they will have nothing to say because of the little prince. Have faith.” She said, squeezing her hands tightly with her own. If she didn’t want to burden Stephanos with her worries, then she could put that on Selene’s shoulder. The distraction would do her good.
Her question about the length of her visit to Colchis caused her heart to ache. But she smiled, shrugged. “We weren’t even supposed to go to Colchis, to be frank.” She revealed with a grin. “But Poseidon had other ideas. I have never experienced any kind of weather like that. Even the most seasoned sailors had their heads over the sides. We were lucky to make it into port.” She patted her sister’s arm. “And the weather was heading in this direction, so we had to wait it out.” She was silent for a moment, letting the two create more distance from anyone who may have been in the garden
With another pause, she finally spoke. “If I tell you something, you must swear to keep your tongue. It is a most precious secret.” As soon as she gained her promise, she continued, “Prince Vangelis and I have been writing to each other. And as quickly as we started to become familiar with each other, his tone change. So I, in my foolishness, believed that he no longer wishes to talk. When I arrived in Athenia, I learned through Princess Emilia that he’d been gravely injured. And since we were in Colchis, I wrote to the Queen, hoping for an update on his condition. His brother, the dastardly fool, decided that I had to come to see Prince Vangelis for himself. So I show up, thinking that he was expecting my company…” She let out a combined giggle and huff, “And completely caught him off-guard.”

So I show up, thinking that he was expecting my company…” She let out a combined giggle and huff, “And completely caught him off-guard.”
Pushing aside her fears and doubts, she smiled and gave a nod as she tried to believe what her sister was saying. She was likely right, once their son was born Stephanos would be thrilled and feel more secure in his own position and hopefully stop allowing Irakles to bother him quite so much. With a son of their own to keep the line going their worries would fade and they could be happy, learning together how to rule and teaching their children. Perhaps after the first two sons she could begin to hope for a girl, a daughter like all of the sisters she had grown up with. The thought of a gaggle of blonde children running about their feet, growing and laughing and being adored helped soothe her nerves and she was finally able to appreciate Selene’s story.
“I am glad Poseidon allowed you safe passage to the harbor. I was so worried when I heard of the storms, it was a relief that the note came along with assurance that you were well.” Pia gave her sister’s arm another squeeze, interest sparking in her gaze as Selene swore her to secrecy. Glancing around, she drew the older woman aside down a side path of the garden so there would be even more privacy between them.
“You know I will take your secrets to my grave, sister. What is it?”
Olympia’s jaw first dropped, and then a grin spread over her face as she heard the tale, looking fully smug and like the cat who had quite gotten enough of the cream by the time it had finished. Taking both of the blonde’s hands in her own, she turned and tried to contain her sound of glee so as not to alarm any of the attendants that waited a respectful distance away. If Selene’s account held true, her sister might very well become a queen in her own right in time. The Leventi women, spreading their power and beauty across the kingdoms. Now all they needed was someone to wed into Athenian power and their family would hold sway across all of Greece.
“You visited his sick bed? Was he as taken with you there as he was when he visited? I suppose he must have been if you have been writing. You have been writing since haven’t you?” Her gaze took on a far off sort of tinge and she couldn’t help but smile again. “You will be a crown princess, for how could he resist you. And I as a queen, and Theo will be a princess as well..mother was right. We are all for great things. But, tell me. How did you fare with him and his brother? I had heard that his younger brothers were just as formidable.”

Selene couldn’t imagine what Olympia was going through. She had heard some of the gossip at the docks, but little more than that. Knowing the people of Taengea and their love of celebrations, it wouldn’t be long before she heard everything. And while she had taken to ignoring most of the talk, it couldn’t be easy to hear the criticism when you were trying your best.
She wanted to redirect the conversation to Stephanos, to ask how the new king was handling life. But the Queen wanted to hear more about her trip, and Selene wasn’t sure it was time to bring the conversation back around
Her cheeks flushed, the feelings she had been wrestling with since she had appeared at his bedside finally coming out to someone. She had yet to speak about it, not even to Emilia who had told her of his condition. To speak of it now felt more real, like perhaps there was something more there than just the friendship she had been sure was forming. But there was no confirmation that Vangelis felt the same. And with the way her family was known for their ‘social climbing’, it wouldn’t have surprised her if he never considered her an option for himself. She was a Leventi, and Leventi’s wanted crowns.
Before the Circus, she had longed for a crown, had hoped that she would stay in Taegnea and marry Zacharias. But then, the king and crown prince were killed, her family thrown into danger. And the appeal of being royal was just about lost on her. Still, she knew that she wouldn’t get much choice in the matter. Selene was blessed by the Gods, and that kind of gift was destined to be with a King. Which meant that she would end up far from her growing family, alone with crown to find her way in the world.
And in her mind, she didn’t exactly think that Vangelis wanted to give the Leventi name any more power, regardless of their feelings.
Did he even have feelings for her?
She buried her face in her hands. “You sound like Uncle. Apparently, his home in Midas was uninhabitable, which forced the Kotas family to extend their hospitality on me. He even sent horses from his personal stables as a thank you.” She moaned, thinking of how obvious the letter had been. “He made it sound if he wanted Vangelis to break me and not the stallion. Had I let him read it, I’m sure he would have been appalled.” She let her hands fall, focusing on them.
“He’s given no indication that he views our friendship as anything more than that. Regardless of how I may feel, he would have to be the one to make the offer, and I know Father has received plenty from other Kingdoms. Once Theo is settled, he will start negotiations with one of them.” Her shoulders lifted in a shrug, “I cannot imagine him settling for someone just because they have a pretty face.” She told her sister, having gained a good idea of his character. “His people will demand a Queen that is so much more than that. So he will look elsewhere, and I will go elsewhere, and that will be that.”
She hated the finality of it.
“Vang...elis,” she continued, wishing to downplay the fact that they seemed to be on first name terms, “was kind to me while I was there, and I helped keep him company while he was bedridden.” She tried to brush it off as nothing more than something good friends did. “Honestly, the friendship stems from you. I wrote to him after the Circus to thank him for saving you, and he was kind enough to write back. Half the time I don’t think he knows what to make of me.”
