It was mid morning, the air smelled with the crisp taste of apples and figwood. Pavlos headed to his bathhouse and was sure to sink his body deeply into the perfumed waters. He spent an hour of his time bathing and making sure that the previous few days were not glued to him, after all running around in the barn was not something he wanted to smell like. A walking barn. He took his soaps and perfumes over and over delicately running his hands across his body to make sure he was well cleaned before stepping out and drying his body. Upon the arrival of his servants and slave - he would quickly dress and prompt himself in readiness to head out for the morning work with Hugo. Hugo was a large stallion with dappled markings and a smokey grey and white body. His mane was a peppered color with dark black eyes. Eyes Pavlos loved dearly to look in. Gathering his gear and dressing lightly, perhaps too light for his fathers enjoyment, but it was something that he liked to do. Gathering the new colt, to which he had named appropriately river they would head out into the city.
There was a nice field for training horses there, and Pavlos would head in a steady gallop in toe with the filly. River was a dark colored girl with a marking down her neck that well, looked just like her namesake. He galloped away from his home until the streets of the city had claimed them at both sides. Pavlos would whistle his command to Hugo to slow, and they would move their way through the city streets. He bows to a few other head's within the crowd that had called out to him. "Morning.." he replied back with a curt nod before clicking his heels into hugo's sides and ushering him to following along.
Within minutes he was able to exit the center location of the city and head for the farming fields. Upon arrival to the dirt street, there was a pair of peach trees slowly growing to his right. Clicking his tongue and correcting his stallions path of walking they would head to this tiny maybe three foot tree. Examining it - he would smile. This little tree would bare wonderful fruit next year and Pavlos couldn't wait to try some.
The filly cries out, kicking a leg or two, before he corrects her and ushers them back to walk forward. Holding onto the string and reigns of his own stallion the head of Marikas would clear his throat as he pulls out a small stem from his local olive tree in the court yards. Clip clop clip clop echoed the hooves behind him. Eyes perk as he looks behind him to see his old calvary rushing out of the city walls to head to the beach. "Good'morn sir!" they all shouted as they rushed by the now retired captain. Oh how he wished he could still join them. "Train right and well!" he yells out just above the sounds for them to hear his words. He gathers the filly back up after becoming startled from all the rushing larger stallions going by them "shh now...lets go Hugo..YA!" he calls out and soon they would arrive to the gated field for horse training. He keeps himself onto his own as he meets up with another training owner. They talk about their colts and fillies even trading glances to one another's products before laughing together. Pavlos nods and unties the filly from her string and connects her to hugo himself.

Time to work!
It was a pleasantly warm day in the city of Athenia. Summer was just coming into full bloom, and Helios did not punish them by burning too brightly in a perfect blue sky. Far too nice a day to spend indoors, Vasia had decided, and in the absence of her brothers, had persuaded her retainer that a pleasant ride around the city would be a fair way to spend the morning.
She had dressed simply, tailored riding pants and a billowy white blouse that she tucked in so as not to let the breeze catch it and startle her horse. It was a sweet mare, enough spark to ensure Vasia paid attention, but she knew she would be safe. The blonde woman twisted to look at her maid, looking unhappy and tense upon the broad back of one of the safest horses in the Antonis’ stables, and she laughed softly.
“Come, Sophia, do not look so horrified! You must get over this fear. Hercule is a dear old thing and wont go faster than a plod no matter how much you ask”
She clicked her tongue behind her teeth and they set off at a gentle pace, the guard that accompanied the Lady Antonis eveywhere keeping a respectful distance, but close enough to be of use should there be a need. No matter how much Vasia protested it, there was no way on earth her father or brothers were about to let her roam around without Orrin’s steady presence at her side.
It was a nicer way to see the city, Vasia thought, than from the stuffy confines of a carriage, and they made their way through the streets at a sedate walk until the lady turned to her guard. “ Say, Orrin, what say you to us diverting our course a little, so I might at least have a moment spent at more than this sluggish pace?”
There was some open space not far from where they were, and Vasia wanted to feel the breeze in her hair. She glanced at the set face of Sophia and reached over to set a hand on the girl’s shoulder. “ You can wait by the edge of the paddock” she reassured. “ No need to fret” It was not for everyone, she supposed, though Vasia had been hopping on and off ponies from being tiny, trying to keep up with her brothers, and then them trying to keep up with her as she discovered she was smaller and lighter and could capitalise on it.
But when they reached the grassy expanse, Vasia was dismayed to see someone already working their horses there. Now she would need to be mindful of them, and more mindful of her role as a Lady of House Antonis. She sighed. Drawing a little closer however, Vasia brightened up a little. She recognised the man, Pavlos of Marakis, and though she did not know him terribly well, found herself content to stop and watch him a while as he put what was obviously a young horse through its paces.
“Will we be riding on, my lady?” came Orrin’s voice, as he reined his own mount to a halt beside her, but Vasia waved him off. “ In a moment or two” she replied, swinging from the back of the bay mare and leaning against the stone pillar that marked the boundary of the field. “ That’s a very nice stallion there.” she remarked, looking on the dappled horse. “ I didn’t know Lord Pavlos was such a keen horseman”
She did not want to interrupt the man, but was fascinated to watch him as he worked, and so that is what she did, looping the reins if her horse casually around the wooden rail, and propping her chin upon her hands as she spectated.

His hair a waft in the breeze as his horse galloped away on the terrain before them. Making tight and then loose circles as he snickered and whistled to each command for his horse to respond to. The filly was not so much listening as she was just running along at the pace that she could follow. Pavlos would reach back and grab the rope and give a slight tug at the base to lift her head higher. This he did a few more times as they circled the paddock. A neigh or two echoed again around him, but Pavlos was so used to hearing the sounds at his home that he didn't register it to being not one of his own horses. His friend of course laughed at him that the filly was not responding well and it made Pavlos grimace in turn. "She will learn it..eventually.." He shouts out. Pavlos then grabs the reigns of his stallion and spreads his hands to turn the large brute to the right, the filly slams into hugo's large legs and Pavlos is quick to stop them from moving. He jumps down off his horse and quickly rises the scattered child before him.
" Oh do I so hope...." He tells himself before brushing the dust off of her body. He quickly checked her legs and then grabbed her rope near her mouth before bringing her closer to his stallions chest and front legs. Pulling the reins over his head and leading him to make a gentle forward pace, he whistles in tune. "That's it boy..lead her right....that's it..." the little girl bounces back to normal after wobbling on her hooves. Good no broken legs.
He pulls a hand through his hair again, fixing anything loose and not in place before his friend whistles a different tune that causes him to look his way. The man jabs a finger to the left and pavlos is quick to follow the location. Ahh, they were being watched. A nod of his head in a quick bow in greeting was given to the woman. Beautiful he thought to himself but dare he not speak it aloud here. Loosening the grasp on Hugo's ropes he extends his body from the running pair before him as he heads to the fence line. "see something you like?" of course this was a teasing question, he knew most woman that came here were only there to see the colts and fillies frolic within the gates. He sways his right hand up and down signaling to Hugo to slow his pace as he whistles a higher pitch, all while looking to the guest that they had. He glances back momentarily to make sure that River was following Hugo's pace before nodding to himself. 'good good..she's getting it slowly..' his mind closing back on his guest as he turns to hold out his free left hand. 'want to try it?' his face spoke in volumes but never did he raise the question aloud.

Vasia had watched the man for a little while, fascinated in the techniques he was employing, but she was not surpised when he paused in his work to approach, offering a rather feeble nod of his head in greeting. The blonde looked a little amused at so coarse an acknowledgement, and she gave a soft snort of laughter at the words that followed.
“Indeed, Lord Pavlos. That is a fine horse you have there. His good looks caught my eye”
She looked the grey stallion over now the beast was closer, and her initial judgement did not change. “Is he your own?"
When the Lord extended his hand, Vasia glanced down at it doubtfully. What was he offering, exactly. Still, she was never one to back down from a challenge, and so with a halfway apologetic glance toward Sophia, and resolutely ignoring Orrin whom she knew would be glowering at her, the woman made short work of scaling the fence and landed lightly on her feet on the other side. There was something alltogether freeing about the range of motion afforded by her attire, and though she knew it would raise pained glances from some of the ladies of court, she cared not.
“May I?” she enquired, wanting to run her hand down the glossy neck of the stallion but not willing to until she was certain of its temperament. With a sideways glance at the man with the creature, she realised she could have the same reservations about him. He was quite striking to look at, but Sia knew him to have an uncertain temper about him. A retired military man, she mused, whose daughters she knew better than he. She was not daunted though: her brothers couldn’t scare her, neither could this man.
Vasia turned to face him, waiting for him to vouch for his horse’s temper as she swept a escaped tendril of hair away from her face and tucked it behind her ear. Her fair hair was twisted up into a braid and pinned like a circlet around her head, leaving the delicate arch of her neck on show, but Vasia was not a delicate creature herself. She was spirited and well used to holding her own amongst a family of strong men, and had no trepidation in speaking to this sombre Lord.
“And the filly? She is young yes? I have never seen training methods like yours before..they are..unusual. Are they effective? Perhaps you might explain the principles to me?”

He waits with an extended hand, was she waiting on something else? or did she think it was a trick by him? When she finally took his hand in his he gently guided her over to his side. "Hugo? Why yes, I reared him many years ago." he stated before pulling the large brute to them and letting the filly breath a moment. "He had been in a different place for the last two years while I have been Retired." he added with a click of his tongue. Shame really, he still itched for a good fight. He looks to her again as she lands beside them with a perfect and yet somehow graceful landing. He released a bit of the rope to his side as he moves out of her way and hands her the rope end but still held onto the middle of it.
"Hugo? He's the perfect stallion. Only aggressive on the field." he looked up to the dappled stallion then and rubs his nose up to his forehead. He snickers in return as the tiny filly at his side comes closer to Pavlos than to the dapple, as if to say 'daddy im done'. He laughs to himself more so as he could just see she wanted to stop but they needed to continue. He looks back at her as she fixes her hair and smiles. "This is river. My last girl from Brakus. I doubt you may remember but a few years back I had a pitch black stallion with one white eye. Foreboding ass but a great breeder." he tells her and then jabs his thumb at the child to his side. "That's his last daughter. His son is at my stables." he then steps back completely and lets her have the full reign.
He clicks his heels as he tries to clean out his sandals before standing still, his hand rushing to his hair to fix it as he brushes off the dust from his clothes. His eyes trained on her back as he laughs at her comment. "apparently everything my family does is considered unusual." he shrugs and without a moment's pause he walks along to her left side again and gently pushes on his stallions chest with a whistle. "We train our horses by sound instead of commands. Its easier to keep them from running off to another soldier it doesn't belong to. plus, while on the field with a bunch of people screaming their guts out, a horse is going to be able to heard louder pitches than someone yelling 'ya' or calling it with snickers and pet calling." he tells her. He continues to push hugo backwards until he himself stops moving and he looks to her without paying attention to his stallion. Hugo continues to walk backwards without Pavlos touching him further as he then gives a higher pitched sound. Hugo then moves to the left and stops.
Pavlos looks to her with a question "Do you recall the songs in which the mother maids used to sing to the new babies right after they were born? Do you recall the general tune of it?" He asks her before holding onto his filly at his side. He leans down to tie the rope at his feet as he walks forward and back again - the filly following him but off beat as he smirks. 'she has a bit slow reflect but thats okay' he tells himself as he continues to work his tiny foal. "My training with her earlier was to help build her lungs. She will be a sea fairing pony that will pretty much be on the front lines. Her half brother is going to be given to the Current lieutenant when he's older." he then brings his knees to his chest as he runs around with the filly and abruptly stops causing her to exhale loudly. The foal was not happy but she was slowly getting the hang of his odd and weird behavior beside her. Within moments she was walking side by side Pavlos without missing a beat. "that's a good girl.." he whispers with a clap of his hands.
He comes around behind hugo and marches along side the fence walls before coming back around the western side and back again. He did this three more times until her sides were breathing in more air - Pavlos didn't stop once she was in this state. He moved along to hugo and tied her back to his own rope where he looks to her. "Do you remember that tune yet?" he asked clearing his throat as he pats the neck of his stallion.
