They were back again, they always came back to plague him during down times between fights, the endless nightmares. Not even sleepy enough to yawn, the brute rolled over and off the warn tiger pelt he used to cover his bed, rough callused hands rubbed over his tired features. Getting up and walking over to a small water basin, Balius splashed the cool liquid over his face, it felt refreshing as it dripped from the stubble of his jawline. The sun had not even crested the eastern horizon yet as the seasoned gladiator got ready for the day. He wasn't to sure on if there was anything special going on today but he hadn't been told anything. So he thought he was in the clear to have the day mostly to himself.
Being a bit more privileged slave than most of the Marikas household, Balius had his own quarters, even if they were small he appreciated it. He was nothing like the other servants and slaves of the place, he didn't tend any personal needs or prep meals. Balius was actually the Marikas Gladitorial Champion, so he even had a few servants tend to his needs. More so after grand wins but still there was always a servant he could beckon most of the time. In this case he sent a young girl servant off with a message for Lady Daniil for when the miss woke up she would be informed that Balius would be in the gardens practicing if she wanted to join.
Not up for walking through town to go to the Arcus just yet, Balius slipped through the side halls of the mansion to the gardens in back. He was clad in a loincloth and balteus, which held both his gladius and pugio, the rest of him was bare and free to be seen besides for his leather scandals that wrapped half way up his calves. Once in an open area of the gardens, away from the main center piece so he could slip away if anyone needed to entertain a guest, he would go unnoticed. It'd depend how long he'd be practicing and if Lady Daniil wanted to go elsewhere if she was to show.
A shiver ran down Balius's neck as the cool morning air soaked in, cracking his neck wit a relieved sigh, he took off the balteus so he could stretch. He'd discovered the importance over the years that stretching and light warm up to any physical interaction, whether training or full on fighting, one's body was better off being limber. He took his time, Balius was in no rush as he took thirty minutes for stretches and warm ups, then he was began practicing the stances he knew by heart. Sparring and pairing with the air before him, re-enacting the correct movements, stabs and slashes of the fighting style he was working on today that had been painfully ingrained in him when he was a tiro. It felt so good to be doing these repetitive motions, Balius was able to keep his mind off of his nightmares and concentrate on the attacks he felt he'd been weak with in his last fight.

Daniil rolled over and let out a sigh. No matter how she tried she could not go back to sleep. She was restless in both mind and spirit, but could not exactly put a finger on what was causing it. She flipped over and landed on her back with a grunt.
Her hazel eyes traced invisible lines on the ceiling as she tried to relax.
She stiffened as she heard footsteps moving through the hall towards her room. I wonder if something is going on that I forgot about? she thought to herself as her gaze shifted to the doorway in anticipation.
Moments later a young servant girl entered the room and said softly.
"Milady? Balius asks that if you are so inclined, would you care to join him in the garden?"
Daniil nodded and then pushed herself up into a sitting position.
"Tell Balius that I will meet him momenatily and then send someone to help me get dressed and have someone bring food to the garden. This early it's possible that he may still need to break his fast."
The girl nodded and then took off to deliver the various messages.
Moments later another servant appeared and helped Daniil dress. The young brunette instructed tht he hai be pulled out of her face and styled so that it stay out of her way.
The girl complied and with deft fingers, plaited her mistresses hair before she pinned it in place on the top of her head.
As she worked, Daniil's mind wondered if this meeting was going to be a sparring match or if he needed an ear. The pair had known each other for a good part of their lives. Balius served as confidant and friend. It was also not a far step to say that he had a hand in training her as well.
The servant asked "And what does milady wish to wear?"
Daniil thought for a moment and then said "My exomie."
That made the servant blink and then shake her head as she moved to comply. Daniil was folded into the short chiton, and its draping was done over her left shoulder.
Dressed, she waved the slave off and once she was alone, she moved to pull her short sword from its hiding space.
Moving quietly, her feet bare, she hurried into the garden. She paused for a moment and looked around.
She quietly watched Balius as he worked. Her hazel gaze trailed over the Gladiator, from his head to his feet, as he moved. A slight pink colored her cheeks.
'You keep dropping your shoulder." she said softly as a means of breaking the silence.

Side step. Block with left hand, pugio dagger tucked to protect forearm. Stab up with gladius in right hand. Aiming for just below the rib cage, a move to make a quick clean kill if not blocked.
Balius practiced the move over and over with various differences on how and where he stabs with the gladius at his invisible target. Acting as if he'd been blocked or stabbed at so he had to improvise and make spur of the moments adjustments and reactions. He had to say the ground of the garden was much soften to land or roll on compared to the compact dirt of the arena. He switched from the offensive to a defensive response as well, acting as if he lost his dagger or sword so he'd had to deal with what was left.
It was when Balius was giving a harsh sideways up slash throw the air when he heard the feminine voice give a commentating suggestion. The gladiator, "Hmm." to himself. Repeated the movement first with the corrected shoulder position, though the move felt stronger like it should, he felt a sharp twinge in a muscle leading to his neck and he grunted. Instantly understanding his body had been compromising with other muscles which has been causing the strike to be weak. He'd need to get a massage soon, he hadn't tended to one of them lately which could be the cause of recent stiffness issues that stretching wasn't fixing.
"Morning Lady Daniil." Stopping to bow his head to her, always one to be courteous of his lower position to her no matter how friendly they were at times. "Thank you, that was frustrating me." He replaced his blades in their rightful sheaths on his balteus before one hand went up to rub at the muscle leading to his neck. Only a tense flicker in his jaw showed his fingers found the tender knotted spot, pressing them sent tingles down to his finger tips.
Balius already had a sheen of sweat beads glistening off his skin. When he practiced, even with imaginary opponents, he practiced hard. Never letting up on himself. So when he had looked up at Daniil, he had wiped sweat off his brow with his forearm, "Pleased to see you join me. It's been awhile since we practiced." Saying with a smile as he noticed her choice in clothes. An exomis for easier moving ability, less chance of folds of fabric to trip her up. Wise. Plus she had finely muscled legs he couldn't deny he liked to see, though he made that glance brief so as to not seem rude.

Daniil watched him. Watching Balius was like watching a dance, his moves were just that fluid. Dani moved close, her eyes never leaving his form. She noticed that the servant had indeed brought food.
"Morning Balius. You are most welcome. Have you broken your fast yet? Or should we wait until we are done?"
She moved closer to him, her sword still in her grip. "It has been a long time." sh said stopping in front of him, craning her neck to look up at him.

Balius had to suppress a grin and keep a more neutral expression upon his features as the small feminine beauty approached him, the sword in her hand. He definitely had to look down and a part of him always wondered if she'd grown at all since he had first seen her after being purchased. Or that means he was so tall he just hadn't noticed any change besides her figure had matured from lanky girl to lush woman. "No, I have yet to fast this morn." He glanced towards the delivered trays of food. Balius wasn't sure if he was hungry or not.
When the gladiator looked back to Daniil, she was closer now. He could smell the perfume her servants had adorned her with for the day. A feisty little thing with a sword in hand, how much more alluring could she get without even trying? Balius tensed his jaw as he kept his cool. "It depends how long you would like to practice." His rough deep tone quieter as she was closer now, "I will only take a break if you say so Lady Daniil. Are you hungry?"

Daniil licked her lips and then nodded. "Practice would depend on how long you wished to spar." she said her tone dropping to match his. Hazel eyes watched his face. "It has been entirely too long since our last sparring session." she added with a nod.
She looked over at the food in consideration and then back at him. "Food can wait if you are not yet hungry, though we just might eat all that once we are done." she said in that same tone. She was itching to spar and she was also very happy to be sharing time and space with one of her oldest friends.

Balius chuckled lightly, "I have been trained to last all day without stopping. It is you that will need a break before I." His dark mocha gaze glinting as he looks into her lighter hazel eyes, "Show me what you got girly!" He challenged with a growl, intentionally pushing to lighten the mood. He only risked calling her lesser than her title just from the years they sneaked away small moments like this. Balius knew he could train her far better than any soldier could and had fun picking fun at the habits she still held in battle from things she'd learned from them.
Stepping back with a devilish grin, "Let us see what you remember. Come at me!" He was partially bent crouched at the waist as he back peddled with his arms spread out wide. His fingers and hands gesturing for her to bring it to him. Physically showing he didn't feel she was a threat yet as he left his sword sheathed while he taunted her. His tongue lashed across his bottom teeth as he smirked wide, ready to dodge and side step if she were to attack right off the bat.

Daniil blinked as a slow smile krept across her face at his chuckle. She amused him did she? That was a step up from what she delt with when she did not have him to spar with. She took a breath and the tossed her head back to laugh at his words. That was a challenge if she ever heard one.
She took three steps back and the sword came up with a snap in a mock salute, while a playful expression lit up her face. She knew that it was not smart to attack him head on. She lowered he short sword and then she began a silent count before she began her slow dance back at him, the sword being tossed to the ground at the last moment.
Let's see what you do now. she thought, her eyes trained on him.

Balius would only let himself be liberal with taunts, laughs and smiles with this particular daughter of the household because she invited it and they were alone. After the servants had left from dropping the food platters off, the Lady and Gladiator were completely alone at this end of the garden. If another human was to appear, the loose laughing Balius would instantly turn into a respectful straight faced serf. He would never want to have others suspect dishonor of Lady Daniil, even though he was the famous champion of Marikas House, it would still not do to have even the slightest of suspicion looming about. So over the years Balius has ensured he's always found fancy by other lesser women, they flock to him easily anyway. That way whenever someone ever did walk in to find these two in each others company, Balius would play it off as Lady Daniil just requesting his company for professional purposes. By now the pair should be use to doing such.
So when Daniil gave the mock salute, Balius let out a low chuckle of amusement as he continued to taunt her. Then a dark brow raised in curious question as the sword was discarded but the lady continued to advance. He had been planning to dodge and disarm her on his own, just to make her improvise in the lose of her weapon in an encounter but she'd done that herself. Now he had to improvise with the situation. Nifty girl. Good of her to keep him on his toes as he tried to do for her.
"Confident much? Or tired already? The weight of the blade to much for your delicate paws?" Balius kept his distance, wanting her to attack him, allow him to observe what she did. His words being full of taunting intent. Ruffle the lady's feathers till she struck out at him in anger or frustration. It reminded him of the various times his opponents in the arena were disarmed and were clueless on what to do. So one would jeer insults at them to rial them up. Then their rage would give false confidence, provoking them to come to him so he could play with them on his own terms.

Something on the edge of he vision made Daniil loose her concentration and swiftly she found herself face-first in the grass, sprawled like an ungainly animal. What in the name o the Gods..... she silently screamed at herself.
She pushed herself up onto her knees and sat back on her heels. She took a moment to listen, as much to the noises of the garden as to herself.
She enjoyed this time with Balius. It was like having a best friend and older brother rolled into one, or at least that was the face people saw in public. When it was just them in close quarters, there was more to the game.
She enjoyed his lessons because there was always something that made them fun.
To Hades with this! I am never going to fully a lady. It goes against my nature. she thought as she listened to the birds and their happy chirping. Too happy. she decided.
She slowly opened her eyes and looked at Balius. She saw him raise a brow and she ginned like a cat watching a mouse.
"Yes, very." she said with a laugh. "My sword is fine and I do not have paws!" she shot back at him. Claws. Yes. Paws? No. she thought.
She shifted, her eyes still on him as she lifted a hand into the air and she imitated a cat stretching its paws.
"How about some hand-to-hand today?" she asked before she quickly scanned the area.
She spied the food that had been left and the act that they were alone in the garden. The latter made her smile.

The stern teasing demeanor of Balius practically broke as wonderful grace Daniil possessive illuminated itself by landing the young lady on her face. Only the years of having to watch and laugh at these special moments of Daniil’s kept Balius from grabbing his gut and laughing stupidly. He probably found it way too amusing for what it actually was but it was a good relief to be chuckling this early in the morning hours. The fact that she had these ‘graceful moments’ made him adore her all the more. He thoroughly loved seeing the mess ups behind closed doors from public. He knew all the uptight nobles and royals had to be elegant in public but it was the best to see them lose their brave social mask and be a normal person once in awhile.
Balius grinned as she sat there and clawed the air mockingly with her paws. “Are you sure? Doesn’t seem like you can walk on two feet very well. Maybe four paws would be easier for you to handle?” He relaxed from his taunting fighting stance and stepped forth, extending a hand to offer help to Daniel up. “Hand to hand sounds perfect. Would not be well for you to trip and fall on your own dagger now would it?” Smirking cheekily as he helped pulled her to her feet.
“Come on, lets see if you can land three blows to start with?” Balius, though his voice still light and cheery, spoke in a more serious manner as he stepped back from her. Widening his legs apart in a fighters stance and lifted hands in a defensive position, half curled fingers in very loose fists. The fighter bounced lightly on the balls of his feet, waiting for Daniil to commence with her instruction.

Daniil pushed herself up off the ground as gracefully as she could muster, a wicked grin. "Did I do that right? Do we need to practice me landing on my face? Or my ass?" she asked laughing as she reached down to brush any dirt and grass off of her and her clothing.
She didn't answer his question about walking on four feet instead of four. When he got close enough she stuck out her tongue at him the the most unladylike gesture that she could muster. When he mentioned her falling on her dagger she grabbed his hand and put all her wait behind her to bring him down to her level.
She frowned some at his challenge and then she brightened and smiled at him. Once she was back on her feet she nodded and then set to work. She danced around for a bit and then she took three shots at him. One playfully aimed at his cheeks and the other two were quick blows to his ribs. She was careful to let breathe after she delivered each punch and kept her eyes open for his return.

“We can always practice on your falls whenever I beat your ass, m’lady” Grinning as he hardly budged, bracing his feet as she tried to tow him down to her level on the soft earth. How many times had she tried that over the years? It was always fun to use her own pull on him to hoist her up on her feet faster, in a rebound manner the moment she gave up on tugging and his tense arm yanked upward. Nothing harmful but amusing if she ever stumbled as she regained her feet whenever it caught her off guard.
Dodging was simple and easy, though she was smaller and had agility and speed on her side. He ducked his head to the side for the one punch, blocked the next jab towards his ribs with his forearm. Following that he slapped her next punch out of the way with his palm and tapped a light hit on the same shoulder of that hand. Dancing a step back to regroup his fists in, tucking his arms closer to his sides,” What are the weakest points to go for if you’re being attacked?” Balius decided to throw in some quiz questions as he watched for her next attempt.
Meanwhile, Balius threw a few fake jabs at her hip and ribs to grab her attention there while he slipped a quick firm but light quick with the side of his foot at her closest knee. Aiming to test her full body awareness while he blocked and questioned her all at the same time. Seeing how sharp the knife was after not being used as of late.

Daniil rolled her eyes at him and then gave him a glare that made it clear that if she could put him on his ass she was going to do so, though she knew from their long years of work, that it was not likely going to happen, but that was sure as Hades not going to stop her from trying. He helped her build her stubborn streak.
She noted that he had dug in which meant that he was not going anywhere if he could help it. That and he was used to her patterns and that was not a good thing. Predictability was never a good thing and she would have to work to stop that and rather quickly if she wanted to beat him. Seconds after she stopped tugging on his arm, he yanked upwards and she let out a squeal of surprise. She was not going to fall again and she fought to keep her footing.
Dodging out of his way was indeed easy for Daniil who was so much smaller then her long time friend and teacher. Her anger started to rise as he blocked each of her moves with ease. She let out a small growl as he stepped back to regroup. She was not fully expecting the test of her knowledge that he tossed in, but she did not let that show. She took a breath and then said "The eyes or a man's other brains."
She took a step back looked at him before she dodged his attempts to block his moves when he sent jabs at her hips and ribs. She reached down and swatted his foot as it went for her knee. Her motion was like someone that was irritated by a bug. She shot back an answer for every question he aimed at her like an arrow loosed from a bow.
When she was presented with an open door and he had let down his guard, Daniil twirled and placed a well aimed foot into his groin. It was not hard enough to hurt him, but hard enough to prove a point.
She gave him a slow catlike smile and waited.

Balius had chuckled at her squeal of surprise as she regained her footing before their paring blows and blocks began. “What else? If you can’t reach those spots?” He kept at her with questions and jabs, blocking when needed. For now the gladiator of was going lightly on the princess to allow her to warm up, he’d already been out on the garden earlier than her warming up himself. He was more than pumped up enough to really go at it but he knew better than to push her that early. The little lamb had just barely gotten dressed before meeting him here, he was quite positive she didn’t do any stretching in her room either.
“If your attacker is a woman, like Thalia of Nikolaos, where do you aim for? Think a groin shot would be enough? What will disable them the quickest? First response when they grab you from behind? How do you do to beat someone with armor? Their armed, you’re not, then what?”
These were the types of questions he drilled her with in between each hit and block they exchanged. Every time she got one right, he blocked lightly, not giving full reaction to stop a hit if it landed. Every time she got an incorrect answer or answered with sass his blocks were solid or his hits were a degree harder so it either would make her block a sore pain later, or he’d flicked a quick jab in an unguarded area of hers. That was his way of answering if her answers were good enough or not.
It was on an answer she got correct Balius relaxed to allow her a chance to hit him, yet the moment he realized her target, he was almost too slow to stop or block it. Like a viper his hand struck out as he tried to jump back, snaring her ankle in vice like grip. Balius had taken a sharp intake of breath as his groin tensed from the slight graze it’d taken from him barely grabbed the assaulting foot in time. He looked up at her, brows lowered by eyes wide as he let out the held breath, “Nasty.” He growled, her ankle still in his grip, his manhood didn’t want to relax from that close call at all.
He used his other hand to grab her heel and twisted her leg in a direction that would make her have to turn around and away from him if she wanted to keep standing. “Come on Princess, I’m a thug and I’m laughing at you and your pitiful attempt. Now what?” Balius chuckled, “Going to cry for mercy?” Seeing what Daniel would do as he forced her to spin or feel pain in her knee and ankle from resisting if she tried to stay facing him. All the while she was forced to balance on one foot. He even raised her twisting leg a few inches higher in the air to off balance her. His hands dwarfed her tiny foot he held in his unyielding grip.
