Normally, Chrysanthe didn’t have much free time to herself but lately, she had been looking for a chance to have some time to herself to clear her head. It had only been a day since her wildest dream had managed to come true, without her even trying. By some mad stroke of luck, she had been gifted some golden bracelets by a woman who had been a friend of the prince himself. Selling those bracelets had given her the money that she would need to finally find some independence, and start out on a life of her own. But what would that life look like? It was one thing to dream of another life, but quite another to actually have the power to make that dream into a reality. Now that she had money, there were so many possibilities, and while one part of her wanted to explore all of them, with no way to get more money, that could quickly end up with her right back where she started, completely penniless.
So that day, when Chrysanthe was sent out to run errands she didn’t head for the market like she was supposed to. Well, she had started by heading towards the market, but that day, it seemed like her feet had taken on a life of their own. Instead of the market, she found herself wandering down towards the sea, to the place where she had always felt the most free, at least until now. When she could sneak away she always used to go down to the sea and look out across the water that stretched out as far as the eye could see and imagine that somehow she could find her way across the water to somewhere far away.
Today, as she walked along the seashore, she watched the waves come in and considered what she would do with the money she had obtained. She knew she wanted to learn a trade, a proper trade that wasn’t just watching children and teaching them a few basics of spinning and weaving. Perhaps she could buy an apprenticeship with a clothmaker? Or maybe she should try something completely new. Maybe she could find something outside of Vasiliadon, she really liked the idea of living somewhere new, and she did have the funds to travel now. She would have to make sure she left a bit of the money for the children, that was the only thing she had definitely decided for sure.
Chrysanthe sighed and looked back in the direction she was walking, making sure that she wasn’t about to trip over anything in her path. She spotted a young woman slightly higher up the beach who was looking out over the beach in her direction and painting. Chrysanthe suddenly realized that she was blocking the woman’s view. ”Sorry,” she greeted the woman, quickly stepping out of the way of her view and walking up beside her. ”I didn’t see you there. Usually, it’s so quiet down here.” As Chrysanthe talked, she had approached close enough to see what the woman was working on. Chrysanthe stared slack-jawed for a moment at what the woman was painting. ”Wow, that’s so pretty. I wish I knew how to paint like that.” Chrysanthe briefly considered what it might be like to take an apprenticeship as a painter. She wondered if it paid enough that she’d be able to support herself.

Adelpha, once finally arrived in Vasiliádon and settled into her seaside home, began to unpack her art supplies within the second spare bedroom and before she knew it, there were piles of parchment, oil paints and canvases crammed into a flurry of organized chaos. It took her a couple more hours to organize her possessions and moving was always a process. At that point, the young artist decided that she desperately needed a break from unpacking and she decided to fold up one of her portable easels, thick parchment and set of oil paints, heading for the nearby seashore. Once the thin brunette made her way down a trail towards the ocean, outside of the city’s break wall, she inhaled softly and began to relax; likely for the first time since she had arrived.
The young woman was more than content to be away from Colchis and her family, although she missed her friends more than anything. But it was her chance to claim her own life for herself and to prove her father, that she was more than capable of being independent and free of his impossible expectations. And that’s why the smell of the sea-salt air calmed her and soothed her soul. She took a long moment simply to breathe and close her eyes, before she made her way towards a slight incline on the rocky beach, above the beautiful, unfolding scenery of the beach. Once Adelpha found a suitable spot for painting, she unfolded her easel and carefully clipped her heavy parchment into place.
Adelpha knew she was more than fortunate, in more than a couple ways to be where she was. Thanks to her patron, Iolanthe, she was able to afford her cottage and a fresh chance at life. Although she yearned for the company of old friends, the young brunette was more than willing to embrace upcoming change in her life. The sounds of the waves rolling in from the tide, calmed her and she lifted a brush into her pale hand, covering paint across the canvas and letting her thoughts wander. Freedom, at its finest form, at last. There was no nagging from her father, no “coaxing” from her mother to find a husband and though she dearly loved them both, she was content to be on her own, in that moment.
At the sound of Chrysanthe’s voice, the tall artist froze, with paint brush in hand and nearly jumped out of her skin. She hadn’t seen anyone approach, that much was clear and she made a soft, surprised sound, her blue eyes then focusing on the other woman speaking to her. Although a little taken off guard, her lips curled into a soft sort of a smile and she offered a greeting, her blue eyes a little curious. “Oh, it’s all right. In truth, you startled me.” Adelpha laughed softly, a shy smile being offered to Chrysanthe. “I had no idea anyone else was here but me. Would you like to see what I’m working on?” The artist was more than a little delighted, a slight blush crawling across her pale cheeks and she gestures for Chrysanthe to approach and come see what she was working on. “Right now, I’m mostly working on my landscapes and my technique for creating realistic waves. Of course, I’m not quite there, yet.” She spoke softly, though with a warm tone, her blue eyes then returning to Chrysanthe. “I would be willing to teach you, if you’d like. I’m Adelpha, of Laconia.” The brunette offered timidly.

Chrysanthe cringed a bit as her greeting startled the artist. She hated to think that she had disturbed the woman. She was considering that perhaps she should go, and not disturb the woman further when she spoke with a reassuring voice and gestured Chrysanthe over. Chrysanthe picked her way across the sandy beach, curious as to the woman’s work. ”I’d love to,” she replied as the woman offered to show her what she was working on. Chrysanthe hadn’t ever had much chance to see an artist in action. She usually only got to see the finished pieces in the market, and even then, she didn’t have a lot of time to stand and admire them. Getting a chance to see an artist at work was a rare treat.
Chrysanthe nodded along as the woman described what she was working on. Chrysanthe didn’t entirely follow what she was talking about, she wasn’t aware that there were any particular techniques when it came to painting. ”I don’t see anything you need to work on,” Chrysanthe said, looking over the picture. ”It’s so beautiful.” Chrysanthe knew that she would never ever be able to create something as nice as this woman had painted, even half done, she could see how the landscape in front of her had been almost duplicated in the painting.
Chrysanthe smiled broadly as the woman offered to teach her. While she wasn’t sure she could ever have the skill that this woman possessed, Chrysanthe knew better than to say no to an offer like that. “I’d love to learn,” Chrysanthe replied, smiling back at Adelpha. She couldn’t believe that she would have the chance to learn to do what Adelpha was doing. Now that she was free from Rhode she’d be able to learn this craft and maybe, just maybe it was something she could do with her life. “I’m Chrysanthe of Euttica.” Then Chrysanthe realized that the place she was from did not sound familiar. ”Are you not from around here? I’ve never heard of Laconia before.” She wondered how someone had managed to come to Vasiliadon from somewhere far enough away that she hadn’t heard of it.
