Imeeya found herself indignant at the accusation that she was spying on Asia. She had never intended to witness something secret, that was the whole reason she was so angry. Anyone could have seen Asia's indiscretion and then her reputation would have been ruined. Imeeya's steed shied to the side as Imeeya tensed on the mare's back. In the moments that it took to edge her horse on again, Asia continued her explanation, but the words barely registered between her anger and having to deal with controlling the horse.
As soon as Asia stopped speaking, Imeeya launched into a counter-attack. “I was not spying on you!" Imeeya exploded at the princess. Any concern that she shouldn't be overheard by the two riders ahead of them forgotten in the sudden burst of anger. "You ran off, and I was just trying to find you. If I could have seen you anyone could have seen you.”
It wasn't until she had finished her diatribe that Asia's final words sunk in. The man had kissed her, she hasn't kissed him at all. Then it was his fault and his impropriety that had put Asia's reputation in danger. And the event had caused Asia enough distress that she didn't even want to think of the incident. At that moment, Imeeya wished that she could return all of the words she had spoken to her mouth, but it was too late, they were already out in the world.
Imeeya looked down, for a moment. "I… I didn't know," Imeeya started defensively looking for any justification for why she had thought the worst of her cousin. But what justification was there really? Sure Asia was wild. Imeeya herself had joined in with or been told about enough of her adventures, but that didn't mean that Asia didn't know how to mind her manners when necessary. Imeeya had jumped to a conclusion and had never bothered to allow her cousin the chance to defend herself. Imeeya sighed. "I suppose that is no excuse to judge you for something without even asking for your side." It would have been a useful apology had it ended there, but Imeeya's pride wouldn't let her leave it at that. "But you must admit that had it been anyone else who saw you, you would have been judged in the court of public opinion without anyone asking your side." It’s what anyone would have assumed, so it wasn’t unreasonable for her to have made the same assumption.

Athanasia wasn't the only one having trouble with her borrowed horse. She felt a bit smug as Imeeya struggled with hers. Had the mare sensed that her cousin was startled that she had been caught spying? There was no other explanation. If she had just been looking for her, then why hadn't she said something about the kiss then? Why had she pretended she didn't know? Athanasia would have loved to discuss what had happened with her best friend. Maybe she could helped her understand why somebody would just suddenly kiss her and take off running. She was the wilder one of the two, but she had always thought Imeeya more worldly.
“I was searching for you,” she said. “I lost you in the crowd when we were looking for dance partners. If anyone else did see, I doubt they would have recognized me. There were so many people there and I wasn't wearing a tiara or an extravagantly expensive chiton. I was trying to blend in. Even when we danced, nobody guessed my identity or they would have all stopped and bowed to me.” And the men would have competed with each other to be her partner. Being a princess wasn't always a blessing. Sometimes it felt more like a curse.
Imeeya was right, though. If anyone had recognized her, there would have been hell to pay. Because of her royal blood and her position as the only Princess of Colchis, she was held to stricter standards than other women. Even noblewomen were able to get away with more than she could. Everything she did and said was noted and spoken about. Truly, she had been lucky that nobody had paid much attention to two young people kissing at the market. Among commoners, such things must happen all the time.
Her cousin was just looking out for her, worried that she would be ruined if she was caught kissing anybody in public. Still, anger simmered inside of her, wondering why she hadn't approached her before this. “I appreciate your concern, Imeeya. But nobody saw and it won't happen again. I told Vangelis about him and he said he would kill him if he tried anything again.
“Do you know Lord Silanos of Valaoritis? We met at the manor and I thought we were friends, so when I saw him at the market, I walked up to him and asked him how he was doing.” That wasn't the whole truth. She had asked him why he was avoiding her, but now she was beginning to think that their paths had simply not crossed before that night. “He didn't even answer. He just suddenly kissed me, and fled.”

The fact that the kiss was not of Asia’s doing changed everything for Imeeya. She had found it hard enough to be angry with Asia for so long. Imeeya had been looking forward to traveling with her cousin and best friend but things had been going wrong since the start. First she had been grounded in the days leading up to the trip after her action in the fire. Then she and Asia had barely talked during the trip there. Once Imeeya was angry it was hard to thaw the ice that she put up around herself. Even now, Imeeya found it hard to admit that she might have been wrong in the way she had treated Asia, but now that things had been cleared up, it seemed like perhaps things might be getting back to normal with Asia, and this trip might not be so horrible after all.
Imeeya had to admit that Asia’s actions were not as scandalous as she had originally assumed. But what else was she supposed to think when she saw Asia kissing a man and not reacting badly to it? As Imeeya listened to her cousin’s explanation, her expression softened from anger to one of concern. Her cousin was in need of some helpful advice to prevent something like this happening again. Still, as the explanation about what happened was given, Imeeya only listened, updating her assumptions about what had gone on that night. She didn’t see the point in apologizing for not knowing what had happened.
Imeeya knew that if Vangelis was already talking about making death threats he was taking things seriously. The intensity of the reaction did surprise Imeeya a bit, but she’d never had an older brother. Perhaps that was just a certain brotherly protection that he was exerting. “Killing him seems a bit harsh for just a kiss,” Imeeya admitted to Asia. “Although I agree with him in principle. It’s clear he shouldn’t be around you if he can’t keep his hands to himself. Or I suppose mouth is this particular case.” Imeeya looked at her cousin sympathetically. “I know you thought he was a nice person, but if he’s willing to do that to you. He’s not your friend, Asia.” Imeeya slowed her horse a bit so she could pull her horse a bit closer to her cousin. “I know you like to see the best in people but clearly this is not a man you want to be around.”

Now that Imeeya knew the whole story, she didn't seem angry anymore. Athanasia supposed that she would have felt the same way if their positions had been reversed. They were cousins and best friends and they shouldn't keep secrets from each other. The princess didn't consider that kiss a secret, nor had she thought it was important enough to tell Imeeya. Like she had said a bit earlier, she was trying to forget the entire incident, to pretend that it never happened. She had indeed been lucky that nobody had recognized her that evening.
She smiled wryly. “I have four brothers and they're all very protective of me. I doubt not that Vangelis would harm Lord Silanos if he touched me again. Maybe he wouldn't actually kill him, but he would make sure that he never came near me. Any of my brothers would do the same. My honor is important, not only as their sister but because I'm the only Princess of Colchis.”
Athanasia shook her head, indicating her disappointment in her cousin. “You should know that I take my position seriously. Yes, I like a bit of adventure and mischief every now and then, but I know my most important duty is to marry for political advantage and influence. I'm certainly in no hurry to wed, but I would never do anything to jeopardize my virtue.” She wrinkled her nose. “I'd rather fight a man than kiss him anyway.”
She nodded. “I know that now,” she agreed to Imeeya's statement that Silanos was not her friend. "We got along so well at first I suppose he had me fooled.” She almost wished she tell her cousin about that night in the brothel when she had discovered that Silanos was a drunkard who unwisely advertised his wealth and practically begged to be robbed, but her illicit forays into the city at night could never be mentioned to anyone.
Her horse snorted when Imeeya pulled her own mount closer, but it didn't try to shy away. “I never want to see him again. You should stay away from him too. He can't be trusted. If he ever tries to speak to you, make a polite excuse and leave.”

Now that Imeeya and Asia were finally back on good terms, Imeeya felt like she could relax for the first time since they had arrived in Taengea. It was also such a relief to know that Asia was looking out for her own honor and her own safety. Besides, Asia was right, if any of her brothers knew of a threat to her honor they would make certain that that threat was taken care of. While Imeeya could forgive Asia for the indiscretion, she couldn’t help but feel that Vangelis’s threat to Sil’s life was justified in this situation.
At Asia’s declaration that she’d rather fight a man than kiss him, Imeeya raised an eyebrow. She wasn’t sure if Asia was trying to make a joke or whether she was being serious. If she was serious Imeeya was quite surprised. “Are you sure?” Imeeya taunted with a smile, then switched to a lower conspiratorial voice, reining her horse in closer to Asia’s. “As much as I have no desire to shackle myself to a guy for life, I’m not sure I’d mind if one at least wanted to kiss me every now and again,” Imeeya said the last part quietly, blushing slightly. She didn’t want anyone else to overhear. It was a thought she barely admitted to herself, much less anyone else.
Luckily the conversation swiftly moved back to Silanos. “That’s why you have to be careful with men. They aren’t always what they seem. You can’t give them any opening.” It was advice Imeeya tried to follow in her own life. The best way to keep men at arm’s length was to not let them think they stood any chance with her. When Asia tried to get her to promise to leave Silanos alone, Imeeya didn’t want to promise anything she couldn’t hold herself to, especially not to Asia. But she hoped her compromise would meet with her cousin’s satisfaction. “I can’t promise you I won’t want to give him a piece of my own mind, but I can tell you that he will not get a warm welcome from me.” Imeeya punctuated her final statement with a decisive nod.

If only Imeeya had come forward with her concerns earlier, both of them would have been saved a lot of grief. Athanasia made a mental note to herself to immediately ask what was wrong if her cousin seemed irritated at her for no good reason. She felt as if she could breathe easier now that that everything was out in the open. Hopefully nothing would come between them ever again.
She noticed her best friend's raised eyebrow, and her own quirked upwards when Imeeya reined her horse close to Rose and whispered that she wouldn't mind if a man kissed her every now and then. Athanasia shouldn't have been surprised, but she was. They were old enough to be wooed and they were probably the most eligible women in Colchis … Imeeya was heir to her own House, and Athanasia was a member of the royal family.
Maybe Imeeya was ready for romance while she was not. Men still confused the princess and she had never thought of them as more than sparring and hunting partners until Silanos had kissed her. Now she dreamed about being kissed sometimes. When she woke up she just felt bewildered. Of course, she had suitors aplenty, but she took their flowery compliments with a grain of salt and refused to accept the gifts they tied to present to her.
Athanasia tilted her head to the side and pondered her cousin's question. “Yes, I would rather fight them. Though if one beat me, I might reward him with a kiss on the cheek. And don't you think that if you allow one a kiss, he might want more? Also, if anyone saw you, your reputation would be ruined, as mine would have been had somebody seen Silanos kiss me.”
What bothered her the most about her encounter with the young lord was that he had deceived her into believing that he was her friend. He had just been using her, perhaps hoping that he would gain royal favor by associating with her. She still didn't understand why he had run away. Maybe he thought she would seek him out and ask for a repeat performance?
The young princess laughed. “If he ever approaches me again, I might give him a piece of my mind too. Though I think I would rather show him my amazing right hook.” Imeeya seemed to understand how dangerous he was. It was possible that she wouldn't be able to avoid him at events and parties, and would have to at least be civil to him.
Athanasia glanced over at Vangelis and Lady Selene, still riding a short distance away. “Shall we rejoin them now?” she asked. She felt much lighter and happier than she had when this ride had begun.

As Vangelis and Selene continued to ride together in casual and quiet comfort, their lack of conversation was not uncomfortable. Instead, the two of them seemed to be settling within the company of each other, their horses matching pace and their familiarity growing simply from the proximity with which they rode.
Their path naturally, and without plan or comment, wound its way back towards Athanasia and Imeeya, a path that Vangelis was probably the more devoted to, as he knew that his sister and cousin were his responsibility whilst out in the woodlands and grassy plains of Taengea.
Whilst he had kept an eye on his female relatives whilst he and Selene had ridden out alone and talked together, the crown prince and the Taengean lady had been too far away for him to notice facial expressions or the general demeanour of the girls. As such, he had known them to be safe and not approached by strangers, but not at all that they had been fighting. Let alone what they had been fighting about.
Upon returning close enough to see their expressions again, however, the argument had passed and their discussions had moved on, with Vangelis and Selene returning the wake of a renewed friendship.
"Shall we turned to head back?" Vangelis offered to the younger girls, glancing towards Selene as he made the suggestion. "I fear much longer and your reputation will be wounded." He said with a sidelong moment of humour to the Leventi. He then looked back upon his sister and cousin, open to the idea of continuing their ride if they so wished but also content with returning them to the safety of the streets of Vasiliadon.

Imeeya stiffened a bit at her cousin’s admonishment. It was foolish to think such things about men. She knew her cousin was right and that any hint of impropriety could be the end of her reputation just as much as it would have been for the Princess’s. “That stays only between you and me,” Imeeya said, quickly backing off her earlier statement. For some men, even a hint of desire was enough for them to be encouraged. Imeeya had no desire to deal with the complications of a real man in her life. “The fantasy of a man is something entirely different from the reality. I would not risk my own reputation on what is simply a flight of fancy.” The last thing Imeeya wanted to do was find herself in a situation where she had to get married in order to preserve her title or future.
When the conversation moved on to Silanos, Imeeya nodded her approval of Asia’s opinion. “Believe me, if I ever see him again, I think I would find it hard to restrain my own displeasure.” As Asia knew, Imeeya’s temper was not one to be trifled with. Despite the fact that Asia was capable of defending herself and didn’t need any protection from Imeeya, she still felt that it was her duty to stand up for her cousin’s honor. Should she ever run into Silanos, he would certainly feel her wrath.
It was only just after Asia had proposed rejoining the others that Vangelis approached them again. Imeeya nodded a bit towards the prince as he suggested that they return back to Vasiliadon. “It has been a pleasant ride,” Imeeya nodded towards Selene with a smile. Despite the fight with Asia, she did not wish to be impolite to the hostess. Besides, their quarrel was none of her business. “But I do think that it is time that we return.” With things resolved between her and Asia, Imeeya was ready to return to the city.
