Evelli had returned home late the night before, being busy with helping her third daughter and ensuring her health before she had returned late at night, long after the dinner with the Crown Prince of Colchis had concluded with her eldest and her brother in law. While Evelli had been keen on attending the dinner, the health and wellbeing of a pregnant daughter came first, and knowing what would be happening this morning as the men rode off to the palace courtyards to heed the King's call, Olympia would need company. As such, when forced between two daughters, Evelli chose the one that would be a matter of life and death.
But that did not mean she was going to let her eldest off that easily.
The carriage that would bring her to the harbor had been waiting on the front doors of the Leventi manor since the crack of dawn, packed with her luggage. The carriage beared the colors and crest of the Leventi household, liveried with two handsome chestnut geldings and a bevy of footmen to assist the lady of the house to the harbor where she would board the ship and for a few hours ride to arrive at Macendia, where Evelli intended to stay over the last few days of her husband's recovery, before bringing him back to the capital.
Yet the lady was nowhere in sight. As the sun rose higher, Evelli was instead making her way to the bedroom she knew was Selene's. Her pastel yellow dress was held in her hands so it did not sweep the floor, her brunette locks in a tight chignon above her head so the ocean winds would not tangle it as she arrived at the door, and gave it three sharp raps. The woman merely paused, a show of listening for a response. But if anyone knew the matriarch well enough, they would know that when she was on a mission, there were few on the face of earth who could stop her.
And ensuring her daughter's marriage was a mission greater then the survival of mankind. At least in the books of Evelli of Leventi.
Pushing the door's open, the woman dragged the material blocking the sunlight from streaming in the bedroom, more or less giving a rude awakening to her eldest daughter as she turned to face her, an expectant smile on her lips. "So, did it go well?" her eyes fell on the bare dressers, and then Selene's fingers. Subtlety was not Evelli's forte, but her family knew that well. It was no secret that Evelli has been seeking to marry of her daughters the moment they reach marriageable age. With Theodora well on her way, and Olympia almost bearing a child of her own, Selene was her final mission before she set her efforts on her two youngest. The fact that the blonde beauty had spent almost a month prior to this in Colchis meant Evelli's expectations was already higher than usual. For despite her famed blessed beauty, the woman also knew that looks did not last forever, and age waited for no one.
Walking closer, she pulled the sheets off Selene, not bothering with modesty, as she settled on the edge of the bed, eagerness clear in her eyes. "Shall I have news to tell Papa when I return to Macendia then, Lene. Shall I summon the seamstresses? You will have the most gorgeous wedding dress, I promise you." Already, her mind was jumping five steps forward, and already working the cogs to plan the grandest wedding she could. She was stolen of the chance with Olympia's, and Theodora's had been delayed... Evelli could now concentrate her whole effort on Selene. And that may not be a comforting thought to her daughter.

The night had been a bit awkward. While Selene had relaxed as soon as her uncle had left them alone, she was quick to remember proper decorum as soon as they were joined back in the room to go to dine with the family. It had been hard to find a balance, for there were things she knew of Vangelis that she did not wish to share with her uncle. And there were things that she knew Vangelis did not wish to have made public. Dinner had been a formal affair, only quietly softened by the few stolen moments in which she said goodnight to him.
The meal hadn’t gone all that late, but she had been up late tossing and turning. Had she said something that her uncle may have been able to pick up on? Had she embarrassed or done anything to make Vangelis wish to leave? She hadn’t been sure, and yet she couldn’t stop trying to replay the conversations in her mind.
Jo brought her the 4th glass of wine, which seemed to finally put her to sleep. Now, with the drapes pushed open, sun pouring into the once dark space she’d been sleeping in. Her pale blue nightdress was wrinkled, obviously displaying her restless night. She grabbed one of the feather pillows, covering her head with it. The copious amounts of wine she’d consumed last night needed a few more hours before she felt normal. The light made her head throb, and the groan that escaped her lips was highly unladylike.
It took her a moment to realize it was her mother who had burst into her room.
”Mama…” She said in another moan, letting out a soft gasp as the cold air hit her exposed legs. She tried for a moment to steal the bedding back from her, but the woman was persistent. Her seated position on the bed made it difficult to get them from her. Had she been braver, she would have tossed the pillow at her mother and begged her to return later. But knowing that her mother had to leave soon, she restrained herself. ”Mama, can I not even have a moment?” She asked, pulling herself upright in bed. Her plait had created loose curls that framed her face, even if they looked a bit messy.
Gathering her hair against her neck, she rolled her eyes a bit. ”You may tell Papa that the Prince and I enjoyed a lovely meal and that I plan to visit the temples this morning to pray for the King as his men as they ride off to fight the Creed.” The blonde wasn’t exactly sure how much she wanted to tell her mother, for her to pass along to her father. As much as she loved them both, she wasn’t sure that she was ready to bring them into this. No matter what they thought they knew, Selene hadn’t given them much more information than that.
”You may also tell Papa that I have promised to entertain the princess while she is in the city.” She did not mention the vague plan to go for a ride as soon as the Prince found himself a moment or two to do so. Her hand reached out to take her mother’s (the right, simply because her mother was going to be disappointed by the lack of ring) and smiled. ”That is really all there is to tell.”

Her heart softened at the soft moan from Selene. She remembered when they were younger, all of them as Georgios and herself had watched them growing up in Macendia. Back when the girls were younger and Evelli herself was less uptight on marriage. She didn't truly start pushing for it till when Selene hit a marriageable age of seventeen, and even then it was mild until Nana got into the market for a husband. In recent years, Evelli had been almost unstoppable in her force of finding each of her daughter's a secure home... but as the sun hit on the golden hair of her eldest, her heart softened as, for a brief moment, she allowed herself to remember those mornings she'd groan as Evelli woke them up for the day.
But she had no time to dawdle. Nostalgia was for the yesteryears.
As Selene pulled herself upright, Evelli bustled to pull the rest of the sheets off, and took a post next to Selene. Instinctively, the mother's hands went to pull the plaits out from their ties, smoothening the golden locks out as she spoke. Unlike herself, her eldest had been the image of her father, which sometimes Evelli wondered and guessed, was why Georgios was so fond of his eldest. Olympia and Theodora had taken after her, but it was Selene who was often rumored to be blessed by Aphrodite herself. While her chest burst with pride with that, it had also sometimes made her wonder if that was why the Crown Prince Zacharias had delayed his offer of marriage.
Until he kicked the bucket, that is.
Using her fingers to smoothen out any knots which had formed through the night and straighten up the mess that the hair was from a night's sleep, Evelli cocked her head to her daughter speaking, and frowned at the lacklustre news delivered by the blonde. The princess? Why bother with the princess when she could be entertaining the prince himself? Evelli was all well and happy that Selene was playing the part of the perfect hostess... but surely she should be focusing her efforts on the sibling that mattered? Relationships between in laws can be fostered later after the marriage had been secured!
Her eyes had flickered down when the soft skin of her daughter's touched hers, as if she wanted to check for a ring by instinct, but her attention flicked to Selene again at the round off to her words. For a moment, Evelli all but blinked at Selene blankly, before she found her words quickly. "I hope your promise of entertaining the princess is with her brother in tow, Selene?" Evelli blurted out. At the back of her head, she could almost hear Georgios scolding her, but she could not help it. Olympia was now a Queen. Selene had a chance too, now. Must she let it go?
"That may be all there is to tell now, but do not let that be all there is to tell at the conclusion of his trip here, Lene." Using her own to give the blonde's hand a squeeze in earnest. Her heart fluttered at the idea of her two daughter's married to a King, or a future monarch. Perhaps that could be enough security for Imma and Nana, especially when Theodora was slated to marry the son of the Taengean prince? Would that slake Evelli's need to ensure security for all her daughter's then? She did not know, but she was trying her best. Fussing until the hair was golden and smooth, only then did Evelli stand up again, biting at her lip before she spoke.
"You know I only want the best for you, right Lene?" she asked once, her emotions in a bit of a turmoil. It was odd, somewhat, the way in which Evelli found her emotions at forefront of late. But she suspected it had much to do with recently having to hand the security and protection of her daughter off to the King of their kingdom, in light of the Creed attacks. Between Olympia's safety, Theodora's wedding, Georgios's illness and ensuring her youngest two was taken care for, Evelli's emotions were frayed, in all honesty. "I'll be returning to bring your Papa back in time for Theodora's wedding... it would be nice if we can start preparing for another in the meantime, once Theo's is done." This time, there was no hint or subtlety involved. Evelli's point was clear as her eyes looked straight at Selene's, a hopeful smile playing on her lips.

There was a gentle appreciation of the way her mother worked on her hair. When she was younger, Selene would sit on her mother’s lap while she would fix her blond locks, all the while impressing upon the girl the importance of looking put together and other things she thought her daughter would need to know. As she grew, as more daughters joined the family, the moments spent with just the two of them were rare. The reminder of those moments made her smile, and for the moment, she couldn’t be too upset up by her mother’s fussing.
The frown was missed on her mother’s face since she was positioned behind her daughter. But even without seeing it, she knew her mother was disappointed over the way things had gone the night before. She was hoping for a proposal, for a chance to seal one daughter’s fate with a crowned prince. And all her ‘helpless’ daughter had done was making plans with everyone except the prince in question.
She didn’t turn immediately at her mother’s words. Instead, she rolled her eyes a bit, knowing exactly what the woman wanted, knowing that she needed Selene settled and happy for herself to also be happy. And really, how could she truly be upset with her mother for that? Which is why Selene only rolled her eyes behind her mother’s back, not truly annoyed with her mother’s words. ”The prince has much he has to do while here. The princess is not as familiar with our kingdom, and I am sure Va… Prince Vangelis,” she should have bitten her tongue at that point. Her words would give away the relationship between herself and the Colchian. She pressed on, ”I am sure he will appreciate having another person who can entertain his only sister while she is here.”
Selene was looking forward to spending time with Asia, looking forward to learning more about the princess. She was a sweet girl, headstrong and content to be rebellious. And while the prince had voiced his concerns about his sister’s current mentality, the older woman was a bit envious of the way the princess could act. Perhaps she would be able to be a positive influence on the girl, in some small way.
”Mama, he will be here for quite some time. If he is able to spend time with me, then I will find myself fortunate.” She didn’t say more than that. He was going to be busy here, and as a crown prince, there would be little time for frivolous get-togethers. Selene knew that Vang’s time was very important. And if he found a moment and wished to spend it with her, then she would consider herself lucky. She was just happy that her mother hadn’t discovered the stack of letters sent between the two.
She would never hear the end of it if she found the letters.
Ever.
She moved from the bed, pouring a cup of water from the pitcher and handing it to her mother. ”Can we not just focus on Theo and her wedding? And after that, Pia and the baby?” It was hard not feeling like a disappointment to her mother, but she knew that she needed something more than just her daughter’s exasperation. ”Mama, we hoped so hard on Zacharias, and look how that ended.” Sighing softly, she moved to take her mother’s free hand in her own. ”Who knows why it happened. But perhaps our actions angered the Gods.” She pressed a kiss to her mother’s hand, ”I do not wish to force anything. The prince was kind to me when I was in Colchis, and I am returning the favor during his time here.”

As their brood got larger, it always became harder and harder for Evelli to spend time with each of her offspring. But she was no absent mother, and in between helping her husband to run the household and the province he was in charge of, Evelli somehow found the time to spend with each of her daughter's as the years passed, or bring the whole family out for time together. Combing through the blonde locks she had until all tangles had been smoothed out of them, she paused when Selene did, as if she was questioning her words. And in the same vein, Evelli questioned herself too - should she push further? Selene had always been a tricky one. Georgios protected his eldest as if she was a treasure, but Evelli kept expounding to her husband that they could not be around forever to see to her safety and protection. A husband would be the best guarantee.
A crown prince, even better.
But with how she continued as if she hadn't hesitated, Evelli had merely frowned, but let the subject drop. Arranging the golden locks on her daughter's shoulders, she pursed her lips, considering the younger one's words. Selene was not wrong, to watch over the crown prince's sister would do a great deal in terms of her reputation to the prince, and prove to the family that Selene had all the upbringing and breeding of a fine lady. But that came at the expense of not spending time with the prince, precious time that Evelli knew would eventually beholden the prince to her daughter.
"He should find himself fortunate to be in your presence." she huffed in return, her obvious biasness for her daughter's showing as she straightened slowly. She had been rather woozy of late when she sat up straight, as if all the blood was rushing from her head. Yet between caring for Georgios and running between all her daughters, Evelli had found little time to ask for a physician, especially when she found herself weary and tired. It was something she was putting off for now until she got Georgios back in the capital with the rest of the family. So instead, she merely moved slower as she stood up to move to a side so she could properly look at her daughter as the other spoke again.
Eyes following Selene as she handed her the water, Evelli took it but made no move to drink, as she replied "We have focused on Theo and her wedding for the past month, and Pia and her baby have all the focus of the palace and the Queen Mother. You, my sweetheart, are the one I've not focused on, and I do wish you would find the same as your sisters." she murmured. Yet her insistent tone was replaced by something more gentle and loving as Selene brought up Zacharias again. In truth, Evelli was quite certain that had the Creed not came when they did, and things not end as they did, it would've been Selene's betrothal to Zacharias they prepared for now, perhaps even a double wedding for both her eldest.
But as fate and the Gods would have it, her eldest was dealt with shock after shock in her life... something Evelli never wanted for her. "Do not equate what had happened to Prince Zacharias to the anger of the Gods, Lene. It may be something he had done, but was nothing of your doing." Placing the filled cup on the table, she took her daughter's hands, squeezing it tight. "Be your kind self, I never told you not to. But at the same time, do not let him leave without a promise, my dear. You are the most sought after lady in the Kingdom, he would be a fool not to see the treasure that you are."

Selene wanted nothing more than to marry. And prior to the Circus, they had seen eye to eye on it. She had worked hard to obtain a suitable marriage, one she thought would lead to her being Queen. It was everything her and her mother had hoped for, and she had hoped for a proposal from Zacharias during the festival. His absence had been noted, and the final reveal of his death at the races had brought that all crashing down.
But there was more to it than that. It wasn’t just the loss of a possible husband. It was the gruesome attack on the entire system she had found herself so comfortable in. Wealth and money hadn’t provided any security for them. No matter how many guards they had, no matter how they had thought themselves to be protected, it had all come crashing down around them. Fire and brimstone and death. And suddenly, the idea of wealth and a secure marriage didn’t seem like the safest option. Perhaps that had been part of the reason she had run as quickly from home as possible. Selene needed to feel that again, needed to reevaluate her own ideas. And she’d found a piece of herself in Colchis.
The last thing she wanted to do was lose that to her own pride, or to her family’s interference. Because it wasn’t that she didn’t find herself attracted to Vang, but because his friendship was far too important for her to be without it. There was a beginning foundation of trust that she wished to build upon. And she valued his opinion-- even if the idea of him having a say in her potential marriage made her wish he had never said anything about it.
She sighed, ”It’s kind of you to say, Mama.” Didn’t a mother always think the best of her children? Evelli may have been critical of them growing up, may have pushed them to be their best in every way, but of course, she always thought of them as perfect. Who didn’t want to be in her presence? And as much as she had believed it her whole life, there was a stressor in the back of her mind. She wished to marry. She wanted a family, wanted to no longer be a burden to her parents. ”If he didn’t enjoy my company, he would be the first to say so.” Vang was honest if nothing else. He wouldn’t waste his time on relationships he didn’t wish to invest in.
Her diversion attempts were not working. But then again, when had they ever? Her mother was persistent in matters of marriage. Within good reason, of course. As much as she wished her daughters to find good matches, Selene knew she wanted the security that marriage would bring. It came from a good place. And she had to keep telling herself that. ”How about this? If I do not have a proposal by the time he departs, I will agree to whatever match you, Papa and Uncle feel is right.” There was no promise that it would come from Vang, no promise that she would push the matter any further than presenting the chances for him to choose. But at least it was something for her mother to hold onto.
She would be married… eventually.
The words of her mother, sweet in their intentions, did the job to ease her mind. A part of her wondered if it was something she had done or hadn’t done, that had caused this outcome. It may not have been her fault, but she certainly had suffered because of it. ”I will try to do what I can, Mama. And in the meantime, I will make sure that I care for his sister because he cares for her.” She didn’t wish to expand on that as she stood, pulling her wrapper around her. ”Jo will be bringing me breakfast soon. Do you wish to join me?” She took a seat at the small table, offering the other side to her mother. As much as she wished for a change in conversation, Selene didn’t mind spending a bit of time with her mother, especially if she was about to leave home. ”Have you heard about Papa? Is he feeling better?”

In all honesty, Evelli wasn't the happiest at the idea of Selene being married off to a kingdom a weeks worth of travelling away - but she'll take what she can get. After all, she refuses to settle for anything less for she believes that all her daughters deserves Kings and more. Even if they had to go beyond the borders of Greece, Evelli would speak to Fotios and her husband to ensure all her girls are well cared for.
Selene's sigh was nothing new - Georgios overprotected his eldest, and of late even more so after her return from Colchis. While it had been fine previously as Evelli had been fussing over Theodora and Olympia and their respective weddings or pregnancies, now that everything had more or less smoothened out, Evelli was chomping at the bit to work with Selene, and disliked Georgios continuously telling her to calm down, even despite his sickness. His sickness simply reminded her of their age, really. Of how easily and more susceptible they are to ailments... and how vulnerable her girls were if they left.
Evelli wore a skeptical look to her blonde offspring - she doubted any crown prince would be so blunt, especially when the matter involved political situations and relations between kingdoms. But decided to take her daughter's word for it and chalking some of it up to Selene's young age and innocence when she viewed political ties, she instead nodded at the solution Selene presented, mollified for now at least. But she would make it a point to speak to Fotios to find out what can be done with her eldest.
Evelli was not getting younger.
Nodding in agreement (for caring for a crown prince's sister would definitely put Selene in a good light, will it not?), Evelli had shook her head as Selene stood and offered breakfast together. As much as she enjoyed to share a meal with her daughter, she had to shake her head. Her reply came as she was straightening out the yellow material which had creased when she sat, "No, I had my breakfast already, Selene dearest, but thank you anyhow." she responded, smiling at the blonde. A slice of plain toast it had been, but everything else had seemed unappetizing to Evelli, likely due to the her anxiousness to return to Georgios's side. "Plus, the carriage is waiting to bring me to the harbor. I'm to go to Macendia now, to bring your Papa back. The servants told me that he is well, but I do not trust him not to bully them, so I shall go and check upon him myself." she murmured.
Stepping forward, Evelli pressed a light kiss to Selene's cheeks. "I have asked the kitchen to prepare the extra loaves of bread to be brought to the party led by your brother-in-law later today. Visit the temples, sweetheart. The men would do well with the God's watching over them today."
