Her appointment as Princess Emilia’s lady-in-waiting had been the best present ever.
Hebe assumed that her parents had known before her thirteenth birthday, but they waited until she had received the rest of her gifts to tell her. She had been … and still was … more excited than ever. How had she obtained the position? Had her father put her name forward or was it the princess’ idea? They had spent some time with each other at various festivities and had always gotten along quite well. The two girls had much in common, including their love of clothes and jewelry.
Maybe her name had just been pulled out of a hat. It didn’t really matter how she had been chosen, only that she was. Later that day, her parents had explained that she would spend two weeks of every month at the palati serving Emilia and the other two weeks at home where she could continue her education. Hebe hated studying and wished she could live at the palati all the time, though she would miss her sisters. It was possible that one of her duties would be to attend lessons with the princess, but that would be fun. Emilia wasn’t a know-it-all like Marietta and Evi.
The two weeks she had to prepare for her new appointment seemed to crawl by as slowly as a snail, which was probably an insult to the snail, for it most likely moved faster. There were boring fittings for a new wardrobe, though she liked to pick out the jewelry to go with each chiton. She was also given infinitely more etiquette lessons and taught how to react to various situations she might find herself in. Her legs hurt every evening from so much curtsying.
Today Hebe would finally begin her new duties. Chests of clothing and other things she would need had already been sent to the palati. She had selected the outfit she wanted to wear before her possessions had been packed. Her servants dressed her in white chiton embroidered all over with tiny flowers in myriad shades of blue. Around her waist she wore a silver belt set with sapphires, which matched her fibulae, necklace, earrings and arm bands. The sides of her chestnut hair were braided to keep it out of her face, then pulled to the back of her head and tied with a simple ribbon. A silver and sapphire brooch was placed over the ribbon. The rest of her long thick locks were left loose.
Hebe wished she could walk to the palati and burn off some of her energy, but she had to ride with her parents in their carriage. The young brunette marveled at the size of it, as she always did, and when she stepped inside, she could hardly believe that this would be her home for two weeks of every month. They briefly met with the King, which gave her the opportunity to perform the new curtsy she had learned, and then Hebe was led to a room where Emilia would meet her.
The servant opened the door. Was the princess already waiting for her or would she be the one waiting? For the first time since learning of her new position, Hebe felt a bit nervous. What if this didn’t work out and she was sent home in favor of one of her older sisters? Taking a deep breath to ease her sudden and uncharacteristic anxiety, she stepped through the doorway.

There was more to becoming a lady-in-waiting than just being taken to the princess. Hebe was questioned by several high-ranking servants and then led into a luxuriously appointed chamber for an interview with the King. She had not expected to see him at all, and she tried not to fidget as she answered his many questions. He wanted to know about her family life, such as how she got along with her sisters and parents, and what she thought her new position entailed. Putting on a confident front, she answered with the truth as she knew it, and that seemed to satisfy him, particularly her promise to do as she was told without complaint. Her natural enthusiasm seemed to please him and when she related a humorous anecdote about an incident in her childhood, she could tell that he was trying not to smile.
He took her to his daughter himself. As soon as she stepped through the door to Emilia’s work room, she was entranced. She had expected more of a study area, not an entire chamber filled with beautiful fabrics and garments in various stages of instruction. The princess seemed a bit embarrassed that she had not been ready to meet her, and Hebe smiled. "I think I was a bit early. I've been looking forward to this day for so long." She saw the King's disappointed look and hoped she had spared her new mistress more awkwardness.
“Yes,” she replied after the King left the room. “I think everyone in the palati interrogated me, but I must have passed their tests because ...” she grinned disarmingly, “… here I am. And there’s no need to apologize.” She walked forward and knelt beside Emilia. “I would have become distracted by so many lovely fabrics too.” Hebe reached out and ran her fingers over a piece of embroidered cloth. “Are you having a new wardrobe made or designing a gown for a special occasion? I would love to assist you. I absolutely adore clothes and jewelry. They’re my favorite things in the world.”

Hebe’s nervousness vanished completely as she knelt beside her new mistress, surrounded by gorgeous fabrics. Princess Emilia was the same girl she had made faces at from behind a fan when they were much younger, the same girl who had gotten lost with her at the competition for decorated ships a couple of years ago. Her personality hadn’t changed at all and the youngest Antonis knew that they were going to become the best of friends.
Maybe her parents had known that they would get along well and that was why she had been chosen instead of one of her sisters. Sanasa, Marietta, and Evi were not nearly as obsessed with fashion as she was. If Hebe had a talent, it was knowing what jewelry went with an outfit and what colors complimented one’s complexion. This was an interest that had developed in the past two years. Before she was eleven, she had not cared what she wore.
Emilia held out a purple piece of silk that was in the process of being hemmed with silver threads. Hebe had never seen her chitons until they were finished, though she picked out the fabric and instructed the seamstresses of the Antonis household as to how she wished them to be decorated. Some of them needed contrasting bands of fabric along the edges, and some needed embroidery or beading in various designs.
She softly traced the silver stitching. “You have a way with details, Your Highness. When you wear this gown for the first time, every eye will be on you and other noble women will try to copy your style. Do you know that purple dye is made from snails? They’re called murex snails and it takes a bazillion of them to make just a tiny amount of dye. That’s why they’re so expensive. To make it, you either milk them of mucus or let them ferment so you can …”
She winced as a sharp pain pierced her skull. The knowledge that constantly careened through her mind was threatening to overwhelm her again. No! She couldn’t get a headache now! She would dismissed immediately if she had to spend an entire day in bed. Placing one hand on her forehead, she took a deep breath, exhaling slowly. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to bore you. Sometimes I sound like my sisters.”
Hebe concentrated on Emilia’s words and the pain began to subside. She designed jewelry as well? The young brunette wanted to learn that too. “My parents would never let me go to those places either. I do know some shops that make their own jewelry. Maybe His Majesty would allow a jeweler to come to you? You could give him your designs and he could make them in his workshop and deliver them to you when they’re done.”
That wasn't quite as exciting as watching a jeweler at work, but it was a solution that might be accepted by the King.
