While Achilleas’s eyes flickered between them, Eliana’s own remained on the floor and her body slightly to one side to not meet his gaze. She was good at controlling her face, at least good enough to fight a pink tinging her cheek. Still, her heart was racing from having been so close to a man- especially one that looked like him.
Not that she was some sheltered little princess, but that was still… It was like that moment in the romance novels she read. The protagonist catches the heroine and they share a moment, a glance, a second… and everything stops. But this wasn’t a romance novel. This was reality and Eliana… had acted inappropriate hadn’t she? Or did she? No, she shouldn’t be unconfident in herself. It was an accident. And Achilleas was being a gentleman.
And yet she still felt little butterflies in her stomach. Those butterflies were foolish, and not very practical at all. Was Eliana the type to just get swept up in moments? Apparently so. Huh, she was learning something new about herself tonight.
“No, no it’s alright.” Eliana recomposed herself as she looked back up at him. Her smile returned, though much softer than before. The kitten was quite comfortable, even purring in her arms. It was too bad that Eliana had a dog, otherwise… she might have given this one a home.
Eliana brushed the side of her chiton, trying to fix the bunches, before now completely turning back towards Achilleas… only to realize he too was standing at his side. That was… actually quite endearing, and despite it all she let out a small laugh. They were acting a little ridiculous, like shy children. There was no need to be awkward- it was an accident after all.
Still, Eliana had a very forward personality, and she may have gone too far with Achillleas. He seemed to be very reserved and gentlemanly, and the last thing Eliana wanted to do was put him in a situation in which he was uncomfortable. She took a step forward, still trying to main a respectable distance from him. Tilting her head and biting her lip, she said, “Hey, I’m sorry.” She said quietly. “I’m rather forward, aren’t I? Sometimes I don’t realize how that can… be off-putting to other people. Why don’t we start over? Complete reset. Let’s forget everything that just happened.”
That was the solution right? Eliana giggled and stood up straighter. “Hello, my Lord! Welcome to Argothia,” She said quite cheerily. “I’m Lady Eliana of Kassotis. Our paths have crossed at court, but it’s a pleasure to properly make your acquaintance,” That was much more proper and polite, was it not? “Do you like kittens, my lord? A nice gentleman helped saved this one from a tree. Would you like to hold it?” As Eliana asked that, the kitten stirred in her hands before looking up at the man. It opened its small mouth and let out a cute little mew. Was this weird? Maybe. But Eliana hoped it might… open him up a bit.

Achilleas studied the stone slabs beneath his feet, giving the young woman a chance to put herself back together and allow any embarrassment to dissipate. He thought himself being most considerate in doing so, and so when it was Lady Eliana who ended up apologising to him, he’d looked up sharply. She thought he was uncomfortable? He blinked at that and considered. He wasn’t, was he?
Her words from earlier rankled at him then, because he supposed this fell into the category of abnormal, and here he was, not liking it. “It’s of no matter” he answered, frowning a little, but when she proceeded with reintroductions, the lord could do little else other than play along, to do otherwise would have been impolite. And as she went on, she was even treated to the whisper of a smile curling at his lips, her intent to set him at ease working in spite of himself.
“The pleasure is mine, Lady Eliana,” Achilleas replied, feeling the tiniest bit foolish, but so as not to linger on the sensation he looked instead to the kitten, now curled quite contentedly in the arms of the Kassotis girl. “It would be a shame to disturb it I think,” he said, carefully stroking one finger over the back of the creature’s head. He looked up to Eliana then, eyebrows raised. “And what shall you do with it now?”
Because while they might have successfully retrieved the kitten from its stuck position in the tree if they set it free what was to say it would not run straight back up the same tree. The Mikaelidas Lord was not going to repeat that performance. Perhaps the girl might take it home with her...the little thing was sweet he supposed if you were drawn to small and defenceless fluffy creatures. Which he obviously was not.
His thoughts drifted inexplicably to Sara, for his half-sister had a soft heart and was always taking in stray creatures, much to the distress of her mother. That fact in itself went some way to endear the girl to Achilleas though he was not guilty of showing it. She, no doubt, would be clamouring to take the kitten home and make it her own.
“It would do better with a home to go to” he mused, wondering if maybe it already had one in one of the buildings that surrounded the square. “Next time, it might not be so lucky in finding a rescuer.”

His lips curled into a smile and with that- Eliana felt like she won. Despite the rocky start, and despite the oddity that was the girl, he looked more at ease smiling when it was sincere than when it was polite. There was a difference between the two, Eliana saw. He looked more dynamic when the smile was real. He looked, even for just a moment, more… relaxed.
When his finger went to the cat, immediately it began to purr. The cat seemed to not be a stranger to humans in the slightest. Perhaps it came from another home? The kitten rubbed its own head against the outstretched finger, begging for more cuddles. It was a demanding one, Eliana thought amused. Much like Alexei, in fact. The dog demanded so much room on her bed at night that Eliana had grown accustomed to sleeping in a tiny little ball.
Eliana found herself staring at the cute moment for a second, feeling her heart squeeze. The man was handsome, the cat was adorable, what woman wouldn’t get sucked into this image? It wasn’t until his question to Eliana pierced through her mind did she find herself, once more, returning to reality.
And what shall you do with it now?
It was a good question. Honestly, Eliana did not know. The cat behaved quite well that she didn’t fear that it was feral and would attack a family that went near it. But Eliana wasn’t… one to take care of animals. She didn’t hate them. She cherished her dog more than anything. But to take in another animal? That sounded like work- work that she didn’t really want to have.
But to just let the cat go back into the wild made all of this pointless, didn’t it? They saved it from danger only to let it get itself in it once again. Eliana prided herself in being logical and that… very much lacked logic. No, there had to be a better solution.
Eliana frowned as she scratched underneath the cat’s chin. The kitten stretched its head back, to allow Eliana more space to rub her finger back and forth. “I’ll take her home for a bit, I think. I can try to find a home for her with a family that would be able to properly take care of the kitten.” And if she can’t, she would be forced to keep the cat. Eliana may not fall head over heels for fluffy animals, but she had a heart. She wouldn’t put an animal in danger needlessly.
“And it’s so kind- there might be a family around here that’s responsible for the cat’s good behavior. It would be a shame if I claimed her as mine only for the kitten to belong to another family. I know if someone stole my dog I would be heartbroken. So I won’t do that to anyone else.” Eliana said, affirming her decision more to herself than to the Lord.
Eliana smiled down at the kitten again. With the craziness that usually surrounded Argothia, this little misadventure was almost like a breath of fresh air. Something different but not something… off putting. Eliana bit her lip as she glanced up at Achilleas, “I hope you’re having a good time here, my Lord.” She said honestly. Not because this was Argothia and she should represent it, but because she’d hate to be contributing to someone’s discomfort. Well… someone’s discomfort who seemed kind.

Achilleas gave a nod, taking the kitten home seemed prudent, at least as a first course of action. He thought perhaps if that were the case then he might be able to make his early escape for the evening as he had planned in the tavern. Though he had to admit, it was much nicer being out in the night air, even with the unusual turn Eliana’s guided tour had taken.
“Would you like me to escort you there?” he offered, as much habit as it was the knowledge that at this time of the day there were enough drunken fools around that he wouldn’t feel comfortable with the young lady going alone, even if it was her home town. And then when she asked if he were having a good time, the Mikaelidas lord hesitated a moment. Not because he was not having a good time, but because it seemed an odd thing to to say yes to. Climbing trees and rescuing kittens had not been on his agenda for the night, after all.
“In Argothia?” he asked, deciding that would make for a simpler answer. And of course she would be concerned about how her family’s province would be making an impression of him. “It certainly has a lot to offer. We had an enjoyable afternoon at the stadium”
If the rest of Argothia’s offerings were less to his taste, well that was fine too. They were certainly popular with his brother and cousin and the rest of the people that milled about in the town and poured gold into the Kassotis coiffers. Achilleas couldn’t help but be a little envious at the freedom some people seemed to find here. Others seemed to be having a whale of a time at the gambling tables or hanging off the necks of the heterae that the province was so well known for, but the Mikaelidas man was too careful of his reputation to risk engaging in such things. Also he was a terrible gambler, and wasn’t a person who particularly enjoyed doing things that he knew he wasnt good at. He did wonder what Zacharias had found to keep him entertained because the Crown Prince was not one given to hedonism either, and yet even he’d managed to melt into Argothia’s night life without a trace.
Looking back to the girl still clutching the kitten, Achilleas smiled. “Your family have been very gracious hosts” he went on to assure her, in case she was worried about his opinion. “I’ll be sure to mention it to Lord Diogenes when I next see him at senate.
