The afternoon was wearing on, and all Selene wanted to do was rest. They were leaving in the morning, and she had spent all morning in the Kotas manor. Her conversation with Thea had been her main point for being there and it had ended how she had hoped-- that they both would be alright and that forgiveness would occur. The unexpected conversation with Zanon had all but crushed her, and she had come home totally exhausted. But there was no way for her to nap, not when they had far too much to do.
She locked the door to her room, refusing to allow Jo help her pack up now. It felt like something that she had to do on her own. This was the finality of it all. This house had been where it had all been put into motion, where she had been tricked into moving her things into the Kotas house so that she could be closer to Vangelis as he healed. Her stays had been brief either way, her trunks barely unpacked from this visit. But she still had things that needed to be gathered.
The statue from him was by her bed, still waiting to be wrapped into the trunk. But she wasn’t ready for that either.
Her sister had knocked on the door, wanting to help and to comfort her. Selene hadn’t responded, allowing Pia to think that she’d been asleep instead of gathering herself in the pillows of her bed. Her mother had tried to bring a midday meal, but the tray had been left outside her door. And Selene hadn’t missed the sigh of Jo when she collected it to take it back towards the kitchens. Even Jo had stubbornly tried to ask her if she needed anything. But Selene didn't answer any of them. No, she knew that she would have to spend far too long on a boat with all of them.
For the past few weeks, she had been around people constantly. If she wasn’t with Pia and Tisiphone, she was with Athanasia or Thea. And in between those moments, she was with Vangelis. This was the first time she had truly been alone in weeks. And for the first time in a while, she could just let herself stop pretending. Stop pretending everything was alright. Stop pretending like she wasn’t broken. Stop pretending like she wasn’t hurt by what had happened. She could feel every emotion in the open for a while before she had to pretend for two weeks straight again.
The last thing she really had to pack was the thick himation Vangelis have given her on the trip out. She should have given it back, because he would need it. But she had selfishly kept it. It was a memory of what had been, of a friend that she would lose because the Gods were fickle. Perhaps the ache in her chest would fade, but now when she looked at it, there was just pain. And yet, she brought it up to her face, breathing in the comfort that had been brought from him. Just like that night on the ship, perhaps it would bring her a bit of peace on the way back, too.
The knock on her door caught her by surprise, but she simply ignored it. Whoever it was would go away. But a second knock, light and unfamiliar, made her pause. Perhaps Pia was just trying to be kind-- she knew it wouldn’t be Nana. Sighing, she stood, leaving the long himation on the bed as she crossed the room. Opening the door, Selene was ready to bite the head off of the person on the other side. “I thought I asked Jo…” She said, her eyes landing on the familiar face, one she hadn’t expected to see.
“Oh, Your Majesty.” She said, head bowing in respect of the Colchian Queen. “I apologize-- I thought you might be my sister.” Her hand swept each eye, trying to discreetly hide any evidence of her sorrow. But she knew that her red-rimmed eyes made it all too obvious.

Yanni was pissed. How could another one of her sons make the exact same mistake as the other? While she had eventually warmed up to Evras a bit, she still would rather have had Zanon marry someone more deserving. And now Vangelis had done the same thing. How she wanted to smack them both on the back of the head and tell them how absolutely dumb they were. She had thought she had raised smart and noble sons. And yet here they were, both sucked in and conned by the Thanasi family. She had no doubt this was exactly some plan that had been arranged, and she hoped and prayed that her other two sons had any amount of intelligence between them that their older brothers did not.
The worst part of it this time was that Vangelis had had a perfect arrangement, one that was of love and one that was appropriate both of his title and in the eyes of his parents. And he had ruined that.
But perhaps not all would be lost.
As she headed towards the room where she guessed she would find Selene, she could recall the words that Tython had spoken to her, the promise she had made that she would do her best to see Lady Selene a part of their family if at all possible. She still had two sons who would make a fine husband for her, if she could work the arrangements.
The first step was getting Selene on board, starting with approaching her before she was able to take her leave completely. And so Yanni had paid a visit to the Leventi manor. The Queen knew she was set to take her leave the next morning, but she would not allow it until a conversation could be had. At least to plant the seeds for a potential future marriage arrangement.
She had already been let in the manor, and so when she arrived at the door to Selene's room, she knocked, waiting a few moments, she knocked again when there was no answer. Finally the door was answered and Selene looked ready to fight, until she saw who it was on the other side of the door and quickly her attitude changed.
Yanni was aware from the looks of Selene that she had been crying, but she made no comment. She was not here to embarrass the woman, nor could she particularly blame her for crying.
“I apologize if I have interrupted your packing. We have not yet had a chance to speak in private, and I was hoping you had a moment?” She said, though she highly doubted she would turn away the Queen, no matter how upset she was in the moment. Yanni wasn’t quite sure what she was going to say to the woman, but she would offer her comforts if possible. She would not bring up the idea of marrying one of her other sons, not today. That would come in time.
But offering a shoulder to cry on and someone to talk to would begin to build the necessary bond Yanni would need to bring up such a conversation. She wanted at least one of her sons in a sensible marriage. Perhaps it had been her mistake not to marry Vangelis off at a younger age. Perhaps then this would have been avoided.
Yanni stepped into the room, noticing that she was in fact nearly packed up and ready to leave.
“I can not express the disappointment myself and King Tython felt upon learning you will not be joining the family.” She said, turning once more to face Selene. The Queen offered her a genuinely sympathetic look.
“How are you? Truly.” She asked, wondering if Selene would try to pretend she was fine even if it was obvious she was not.

This is how Thea must have felt, she reasoned with herself. There was no expectation of any further conversation with the Queen. The task had been completed, and there was no need for anything more than that. Just like Thea, the presence of the woman on the other side of the door had caught her off guard. Frozen for a moment, she was unable to make a suggestion as to where they converse.
Instead, she stepped back, allowing the Queen to enter into the space she had barely occupied. The corner of the room had a small table with two chairs, where she'd often taken her meals. The top was clean, save for a decanter of fresh water. With only one cup, it would do for now. Gesturing to the seats, she could only hope that whoever let her in had the foresight to also make sure a tray was prepared to bring to her rooms. The servants had been a part of the house long enough to know what to do when company came. “There was not much to pack, your Majesty. I was not in residence long.” It was just a statement of fact.
As she looked at the table, her eyes fell back on the himation on the bed. She knew she should have packed it away, or pretended to be ashamed of it-- she doubted that the Queen would recognize it as belonging to her son. Her eyes didn't linger, instead waiting till Yanni took a seat to sit in the one opposite of her.
Should she even address the obvious? That she was greatly disappointed in that as well? It felt as though it didn't need to be said, “It is kind of you to say, for I share the sentiment.” Her hands were folded in front of her, trying to appear like her name, but it felt impossible. Her emotions were all over the place, and it was causing a nervous energy she could contain.
“Your kindness in the past few weeks during my stay…” she was struggling to form the words, not quite sure what she could say that would show her true feelings. “I was earnestly looking forward to the time you and I would have together in the upcoming weeks.” The tears were pricking the corners of her eyes, yet another loss realized. Selene would have treasured every moment they'd gotten together. But that was not hers anymore. And she wondered if the Queen would be so gracious with her time with Thea. For the sake of the Thanasi, she hoped so.
She didn't wish to lie to the Queen, not when she had made such an effort to come to see her one last time. “I am not looking forward to my homecoming.” There was enough knowledge of her family and their goals to know that her returning would disappoint more than one person. And she would have to face the shame alone. “This is not the first time an engagement has not come to pass. But this is the first time I have allowed my heart to be invested in more than just a crown.” Her eyes were focused on her hands, afraid of what she might find on Yanni’s face.

Yanni politely took the seat as it was offered, knowing that the moment between them was going to be a personal and private one, so she could throw a little formality out the window, though she still remained the poised and regal figure of a Queen that Colchis had come to know and love. Yanni wasn’t surprised as the other woman said she shared the sentiment. After seeing how happy she had been at the engagement announcement during dinner, and how eager she had been to gain the approval of the King and Queen, Yanni had understood that though the match was appropriate, it was also one born out of true feelings.
Something she was a stranger to. Her marriage had started as one of connection and that was all. There had been no love between herself and her husband at the beginnings of their marriage, it had been something that they two of them had worked hard at over the years they had been together.
“As was I. There is not another I would have been happy to see marry my son.” She said, a true fact. She was not happy about the current arrangement with the Thanasi woman.
She listened as the other spoke of being invested in more than the title. She knew that the woman had truly felt for her son, and that’s what made her even angrier about Vangelis’ decisions. He had really made a mistake doing what he did. She could even argue he had some how managed to mess up worse than Zanon had years ago.
“Do not give up hope.” She said, giving her a look that said she cared truly. But Selene did not seem to want to look up at her, and Yanni wasn’t sure what she was scared to find if she looked at the Queen.
“Look at me, hold your head high.” She said, a command for the woman that she felt was needed at the time. She was not there to boss her around, to lord over her as Queen or anything of the sort, but if it was needed she would throw her weight around a little.
“This is not the end. Do not let Vangelis’ mistakes drive you down.” She started, not afraid to state that her sons current situation was a mistake. She was too old to pretend in trustworthy company that she cared for the woman who would now marry her oldest son and would one day take her place as Queen.
“You remind me of myself a bit, in my younger years.” She stated, settling in her chair, intending to stay and talk to the woman, to offer comfort and perhaps pave the way for the suggestion of a match with one of her other sons.
“You’re strong, but you’re not made of stone.” She stated, which was what she felt of herself, even now. She had proven to be a strong woman, a strong leader, a strong mother and a strong wife. Though people had been unsure about the match when she was first set to marry Tython, she had proven to be exactly what the man needed, and exactly what Tython needed.

Perhaps she should have been ashamed of her lack of social grace and skills in this very moment, or she should have been embarrassed by how she was acting. And if she looked back, she might have. For now, there was far more that she was trying to work out in her mind. Selene was trying to maintain her composure long enough for them to have a conversation. She didn’t want to fully break down, not after she’d just figured out how to hold herself together. The pieces felt hard to pick up once they fell.
So much respect was held from the son for his mother. From everything she had been told, she was a woman who was strong and grace and utter perfection. And while that was coming from someone who may have been a bit biased about it, it was still a reputation that she wished to learn for herself. There was such a presence when she entered the room, and it was something Selene had hoped to learn. For this woman, regardless of her Colchian reputation, was born Taegnean. There was a hope that she would be able to learn the things that made her a force to be reckoned with.
And it was quite the compliment when she said that there was no one else that she wished to marry her son. It wasn’t that she wished for her to replace her as Queen one day, but that there was no one she wanted to see married to her eldest. A lump formed in her throat, but she swallowed it down, trying not to cry at the comment. And it only made it harder for the girl to look at her, for she knew that as soon as she looked at her, she would cry.
And when the queen insisted and ordered that she hold her head high, she tried her best, head lifted to meet her eyes. A tear fell, but she was quick to brush it away as she met the gaze of the Queen. It seemed as if there was empathy for her, that while Yanni may not have known the same pain that she was feeling now, but she cared enough to know how it was breaking her now. While it was nice to know that she wasn’t excusing her son’s actions, she wished it was more. She wished there was something more that could be done, and yet, her affection for Thea made it impossible for any true ill-wish.
“That is kind of you to say.” She bowed her head, thanking her for the comparison. “I do not feel strong, I fear.” There was so much of the past few months that made her feel as if she would never settle down, would never make a match that would make her family proud. “Perhaps I am better at hiding my emotions than I appear.” She laughed, her head shaking at the thought. “For now, I shall be grateful that it was not official. The sorrow and disappointment is limited to family. While that may not be much of a comfort, at least most will be oblivious to it.” She could handle the gossip, as she had always given it little weight in her life.
“I hope the pain will lessen.”

Yanni did not want to see Selene cry, nor had that been her intention upon coming to see her. But she had known that it was a possibility when she decided to go and see the woman. She couldn’t imagine how it would have felt had the same thing happened with Tython. She hadn’t been in love with her husband for the first while in their marriage, but the idea of disappointing those who had been relying on her, and the idea of failing would have been enough to see Yanni just as upset.
Yanni held the same wish that Selene did, that there was something she could do to stop the impending marriage between her son and Thea and instead replace her with Selene. Unfortunately she did not have that power, and she knew that Tython would not do such a thing. He was a man who thought logically and less with his heart, though not heartless. He would see his son married, and not have a bastard child in the family.
“While I know that the pain will not go away quickly, just know that... there will always be a place in our family for you.” Yanni stated. Not exactly saying that she and her husband wanted her to marry one of their other sons, even if she couldn’t marry the one she truly loved. But implying it. She didn’t know if Selene would pick up on it, or if she would think it was simply something nice the Queen was just saying.
But it was simply the beginning of what would be the Queen’s plans to convince the woman to marry one of her more intelligent sons, one of the ones that hadn’t gone and knocked up a Thanasi woman.
“It will lessen. With time.” She said, trying to assure the other woman as best as she could. She had been through heartbreak herself, though different heartbreak, twice in her life thinking her husband was gone forever.
“Take your time and mourn what has been lost. But do not let this break you. You are a strong, beautiful and deserving young woman.” Yanni stated, and she meant it too. While the two women had not had the chance to really bond very much, she knew of Selene’s reputation, and she truly did remind her of herself when she was younger.
“In the mean time, if there is anything we can do to help, do not hesitate to ask.” The Queen stated. She really wasn’t sure what there was that she could do for the other woman, other than offer her some assurances. It would be up to her, to mourn for awhile, and then to move forward. Her future was not with Vangelis, but that did not mean that it was the end of everything. Surely she would eventually mend her heart and move on. And hopefully she would see the benefits of marrying in to the Kotas family anyways. At least one of her sons should have a good match.

Selene almost wished her feelings for Vangelis had been far more secretive. She was skilled at courtly manners, was able to play the part yet be true to herself. But in the security of the house that would have been her home, she had let her guard down. And she had fallen not only in love with the crown prince, but with his family as well. The idea of a large family like her own, a place where she could have been part of the foundation to a kingdom-- it made the whole thought of leaving her own family easier.
So now, that it was no longer her future, it was a pain too fresh to suppress.
And it wasn’t just the loss of love, in that her and Yanni would have found common ground. It was the knowledge that she would return to disappointment. There was too much on her heart, too much that she was trying to cope with. And she would have to figure it out one thing at a time. Her goodbye to Zanon had been far harder than she thought it would have been. But then Yanni came, and it was just as difficult now as it was with Zanon.
But she would keep it together if it was the last thing she did.
A smile spread on her face, even if it didn’t reach her eyes. “Zanon said the same thing-- insisted on calling me sister.” Selene hoped she appeared far calmer than she felt, the conversation with him coming to the forefront of her mind once more. “I shall keep in touch as much as I am able. I have a fondness for letters, Your Majesty. I promised your son I would write, and I shall make the same to you.” While she was certain that a Leventi would be the last thing on the Queen’s mind in the middle of a war, it would still be nice to have someone to write to, especially when she would want to know the condition of her former fiance.
The compliments from the elder Queen brought a smile to her face, “You are kind to say so. I shall do my best. And will rely on your words if I ever find myself struggling.” Selene would have hugged the woman, but she was a little unsure, and didn’t want the Queen to feel uncomfortable. So instead, her head bowed, reaching out to give her hand a squeeze before letting go. “Your family has been so kind to me, I hope to one day repay your kindness in another way.”
Jo quietly knocked on the door, hating to interrupt, but shared the lack of refreshments with the group, save for the decanter of wine and glasses that she had. Selene’s smile to the Queen was apologetic. “The house appears to have already shut down, since we are to leave in a few hours.” She poured the wine, offering Yanni a cup first before taking a drink from her own.

Yanni gave her a small smile when she mentioned enjoying writing letters. She had written so many letters in her life, but what was one more every so often? Tython was set on having this woman in their family one way or another, and Yanni had told him she would at least lay the foundations for such a thing. And so that was what she planned on doing. Ever the loyal wife, seeing her husbands wishes to completion was her main goal.
“Of course, and you can expect a prompt reply. You are of course welcome to visit as well, any time you would like. Assuming my duties haven’t seen me away from Midas at least.” She said, teasing just slightly. Lighten the mood, get Selene comfortable with her. If Selene could bond with her and trust her, then it would be much easier to attempt to get her to marry one of her other sons.
Yanni by nature was not a very touchy sort of woman, hugs had been reserved for important moments, and while there had been a lot of love in her own family as well as the family she had married into, and among her own children, they had never been an overly physically affectionate family.
She took the wine when it was offered, taking a drink from the cup. She would sip it to be polite, and make sure to do so slow enough that she wouldn’t find herself tipsy on her way back home. The Queen was practised at drinking wine without losing her head, as were many ladies of the court.
“Wine is more than enough.” She stated when Selene mentioned that there were no other refreshments. After taking another sip of the wine, she set the cup down for the moment.
“I can’t stay much longer, unfortunately a Queen’s job never ends.” She let out a small laugh at her comment.
“I just wanted to make sure that you were alright. Things seemed sudden and very much not how any of us wanted it to turn out. The King also wanted me to send his regards. His disappointment at the way things went is as great as my own.” She stated, which was true. They had been excited that one of their sons was finally marrying a woman who was worthy, and then the Thanasi had found their way into things again, once more ruining the future for one of her sons. While she and Evras had bonded over the years, Yanni could not say she was happy about the situation after all of these years.
