After seeing the princesses safely inside the paláti, Nic bowed deeply to both Persephone and Emilia before taking his leave. He still had the basket that Persephone had given him along with the cryptic words that haunted him still. The vows that he and Dawn had exchanged had not been witnessed by any mortal. Only Hera, Queen of the Gods had been called to stand as their witness, Nic had been so careful to ensure they stayed safe. Never in his life had Nic done such a thing, but for Dawn, stealing her by taking her as his wife was the one thing he hadn’t been able to resist.
He’d watched her grow up from a captivating child to the breathtaking woman she’d become, for most of that time, he’d worked so hard to maintain his distance from her, emotionally at least since they both served the same princess, and were often in each other’s company. But the day that he’d seen two drunks bothering Dawn outside the paláti’s walls and come to her rescue, ahd marked the true change in their relationship. After he’d hustled her away and out of sight of the two drunks, Dawn had the thrown herself in his arms, trembling. He’d hugged her close, whispering that she was safe with him, then he’d kissed her. He’d meant it as a comforting sort of thing, but that hadn’t lasted last.
Reaching his quarters, Nic pushed the open the door with a weary sigh, his shoulders slumping now that he was alone. He eyed one of the chairs that were in set up in the public portion of his private quarters. He didn't stop there however, forcing himself to keep moving past them rather than sitting down, knowing that if he did, he’d wake up in that very same chair, stiff and sore. Nic knew he may have had the next day off, but he didn’t want to have to spend it working out that what he’d done by sleeping in a chair. He entered his bedroom, letting the door swing shut at his back, putting the basket down on the table beside the bed tucked in the far corner of the room. Nic’s bed was much bigger than normal to allow him the room he needed to sleep in comfort. As things turned out, it meant that there was enough room for Dawn to share it with him when her duties allowed.
Nic removed his armor, setting the various pieces on their respective places, then stripped off the tunic he’d had on under it. He poured water into a basin, wet a cloth, using it to wash his face, across his chest and under his arms before he hung it over the bar on the side of the small table that held the basin and the now empty carafe of water. Running a hand through his thick brown hair, Nicholai, yawned and stretched, both arms high over head. He let out a groan, gaze fixed on the bed as he shuffled his way over to it. Undoing the laces of his sandals along the way. Kicking them off, Nic dropped down onto the bed, crawling forward just enough so his feet were no longer hanging off the edge of the bed. Relieved by the fact that he was on a bed that didn't move with the rocking motion of the sea, it took him mere moments to fall asleep.

Nic was back! -- Her husband was back. Shouldn't she be overjoyed? Ex-tactic? Excited? Jubilant!? ... Yes? She sighed and her shoulders sagged as the thoughts plaguing her over the last month came charging to the forefront of her mind, rattling about and making a ruckus, destroying what peace resided within. Why could she not please him? What was she so afraid of? The goats did it! The bees did! She was sure trees did it, somehow. Surely it wasn't that difficult...or painful. It looked like it would be painful. She tried a finger, just her pinky. She shuddered and shook her head - 'THUD'. Her lithe form collided with the strong door. Here already? Oh wow. Dear Gods. Dear Hera. Aphrodite?
He was probably sleeping. She should probably leave him be. No, no. He was her husband, more so he was Nic, and she knew that despite her flaws he'd wish to be with her all the more upon his return. She could do this, this was Nic, she loved Nic, in three kinds of ways. Three was a good number right? Three Fates. Three brothers: Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Apollo's tripod. Hecate. Cerberus. How did she get on this train of thought again? With a shake of her head, she took a breathe trying to capture courage. She quietly opened the door, and quickly stepped in, closing it.
When she caught sight of his sleeping form, her troubles and worries fled.A smile tugged at her lips, and she couldn't help but run to the -- One of his sandals left about tripped her up. She fell forward but thankfully his bed bought her less than graceful descent. She cussed softly under her breathe and reached back to grab the shoe. Smack! She brought the sandal down right on his ass clad in cloth. It left a near black smudge, and she couldn't help but giggle. It looked funny, she should probably do the other cheek, just to even things out. Smack! She giggled again, unable to help herself.

Nic was indeed back, though he had no idea of the worries that were troubling Dawn, regarding their interpersonal relationship. He’d been taking things slow, much as he had these last several months. Dawn was a virgin still, and as much as Nic loved being with her and wanted to make her his wife in more than just name, he didn’t want to risk her becoming pregnant or for their children to be born into slavery.
Dawn was not a petite woman and was at best, average size whilst Nic was much larger than most men, so had he given it much thought he’d have realized why she’d be concerned. Nic was pleased with her, despite the fact that they’d yet to consummate their marriage. Nicholai had been a slave most of his live, and liked freedom better so waiting until he’d freed Dawn wasn’t a big deal for him.
Nic seldom let his guard down, even to sleep within the walls of the paláti but after his long bout with seasickness he did. So he didn’t register Dawn’s entrance or the way that she stumbled over his sandals, nor the sound of her swearing under her breath. But no trained guard would sleep through an attack even one that was more noise that pain.
Jolted out of a sound sleep by the blow to his backside, Nic reacted without conscious thought. In one fluid move, Nic sat up, twisted around, grabbing his attacker and pinning them to the bed beneath him. Huge hands clamping down on slender wrists, his legs pressing down on.... "Dawn?" He murmured his voice husky with sleep, as he recognized just who lay under him. Never one to waste opportunity, Nic lowered his mouth to her, kissing her lingerly. He still held her wrists to either side of her head, but his grip was gentler now.

One second she was on top; the next second the roles had been reversed. There was a sharp intake of air in response to the quick and fluid adjustment, and before she could catch her breathe he stole it with his lips. She moaned as flesh locked into place. Her back arched ever slightly; the small peaks atop her bosom strained in competition with the heights of Mt. Olympus. Her nubs as hard as rocks, and the dew of early Spring took form between her legs.
She didn't know how he did it, but he always seemed to elevate her temperature, to make her feel tingly, and at times even to ache. Unfortunately for her she was never quite sure what to do about it. She was young, naive, and uneducated in the ways of many things outside her realm of servitude. All she knew for now was she didn't want him to stop. Arms tried to grant her wrists freedom as his grasp eased, but she really was quite pathetic in comparison to his muscles of steel.
Dawn muttered something against his lips. The urge to speak was strong, but the desire to maintain the kiss took hold. So there she was with her muffled speech, teeth grazing over his lips before she fell silent and simply let the kiss go on. A rogue foot however decided to join the fray, slender as was the rest of her form it lightly stroked the back of his leg.

Nic hadn’t intended to let the kiss get that deep, he wanted to of course, for he loved Dawn dearly, but there was always the worry that if they did lie together, she might become pregnant and their child might be born into slavery as she was still the property of the Xanthos family. But when Dawn moved under him, arching her back so her breasts were pressed to his chest. His legs were still braced against Dawn’s, but on the outside, not between hers, so he had no inkling of the dew his kisses were causing.
Passion had a way of elevating one’s body temperature, Nic felt it when he was with Dawn. Nicholai often ached himself when they stopped, but he wasn’t going push her on this. Mindful of any indication that she wanted him to stop, but for now, Nic kept kissing her, shifting his hands from her wrists to the bedding, not wishing to bruise her. His years as the apprentice to his adoptive father blacksmithing, coupled with his training as a fighter had given him extreme strength, especially compared to Dawn’s.
Nic broke the kiss, then inhaled sharply, bending his head so his forehead rested against hers, “Oh love.” He murmured, smiling down at her lovingly, biting back a chuckle as her foot trailed up the back of his calf. “I thought… We were going to wait? Til I earn the gold needed for your freedom?” He longed to consummate their marriage, but had been holding back because of Dawn’s innocence and naivete, coupled with his determination that no child of theirs would ever be a slave.

Her slightly tanned complexion turned a hue of pink at his words, though lips still traversed up his jaw line til she reached his ear. Hot breathe brushed over him as she spoke, "We are love, we are. After all goats do not lay like this." Did she even know the power she had over him with her feminine wiles? Not quite yet, she just knew touching him worked. Nimble digits and plump lips of course were still exploring the how and where. She gave a bit of a giggle on her retreat. "Surely there is no harm in kissing and cuddling?" She had yet to get the guts to ask any of her fellow slaves about sex, so she wasn't aware yet of the common elixir that prevented pregnancy. All in due time though, she would figure it out, whether he was the one to show her, or she became bold enough to ask.
"But if it bothers you..." Her own fingers now free to roam began to trace over the muscles in his chest before making the letters out with the tip of her nail. She didn't quite know all of them yet, and her xi needed work. She paused and looked to him. Lips pressed together as though ready to speak, but the words were caught in her throat. She didn't really know how to say it. A sigh released with frustration and her gaze dropped to the doodling on his form. Silence fell between them.

Nic’s skin too was flushed from the feel of his young wife lying beneath him, her soft lips skimming along his jaw, reminding him of the fact that he had not shaved for the last week or so. Not a good idea to hold sharp blades to one’s face or throat when one was as seasick as Nic had been. He shivered slightly though the muscles of his arms remained steady as a rock as he held himself above her smaller form, not wishing to crush her with his greater weight. He smiled down at her when she called him her love, then cocked his head at the mention of goats.
“It’s not the kissing or cuddling that could be the harm.” He breathed, then brushed his lips lovingly over the features her her beloved face, “Though what goats have to do with it I’ve no idea.” His thoughts and words were disjointed owing to the sensations her shy caresses were causing within him.
“I didn’t say that.” He chuckled, then pulled back slightly as she looked up at him, lips pressed in a firm line, though her gaze faltered, and she looked away. Lowering himself to rest beside her, Nic caught the small hand tracing the letters he was trying to teach her, so they might exchange letter when his duties took him away from her. “What is it my love?” He asked gently, his upper arm resting on the bed supporting his head, facing her with a quizzical expression on his face as he looked at her.

Dawn's toes curled and unfurled as she squirmed and fidgeted in retaliation to her captive hand. Her own gaze trying still to avoid his. A red hue colored her olive complexion bringing further guilt to the surface. "Well, uhm...uh...You see I've been thinking a lot actually about how we haven't you know done things like goats-and-horses-and-pigs-and-everybody-else-really-and and and then I just thought you know 'Gee Dawn you have absolutely no experience in this sort of thing and he probably does with like a lot of females that aren't well you know goats-and-horses and not saying that you ever would just, I mean all I'm saying is I tried to stick my pinky up uhm there, I think it was there, what if I don't have one?! Oh no...oh no, I mean that must be why it really hurt, right? I don't know it really hurt, like really really hurt, and and and they said that when I bleed that's like a man's I don't know, but I've never been with a man! What I never can be with a man? What if I never can be with you? What if I'm- disabled down there?!"
The word vomit went on and on and on, and her chest rose and fell with an uneven breathe as panic filled her eyes, a result of her overwhelmed mind. The cause of the whole ordeal no doubt spurred from her lack of friends in which she could confide, and lack of discussion on the topic with her spouse. Such ignorance was not bliss.
Within the span of around ten minutes his wall flower had crumbled under the weight of her own mental storm cloud. Tears streamed down her cheeks, her nose got all snotty, and her voice cracked around the intermittent hiccups and sniffles. "I'm sorry Nic, I'm a horrible wretched...worst...horrible...wife ever!" She went to hide her face in the crook of his neck as she sobbed, the whole event having escalated in such a flurry as emotions brought on through insecurities, misunderstandings, and lack of understanding in general poured out for her soul. All of this having built up in her time alone while she tarried over menial tasks with nothing else to occupy her thoughts.

Nic grew concerned when she squirmed on the the bed beside him, her gaze going everywhere but his for the long moment before she burst out babbling, ending with a near wail about the possibility of her being disabled. Only by pressing his lips firmly together did he manage to keep from laughing. “I’m pretty sure that’s not the case with you, my love.” He said slowly, as calmly as he could since he was still struggling not to laugh, then he grinned at her.
The mirth died from his eyes, and he released her hand, feeling terrible that she was struggling with such a heavy burden. He’d missed her, but has left her behind because Emilia hadn’t seen fit to chose Dawn as one of the maids who’d come along with them to Taengea. Though it might’ve been just as well since he’d been so ill on the journey. While he knew Dawn was aware of his seasickness, it wasn’t the same as being there when he was laid so low.
Nic rolled over onto his back, gathering her into his arms, holding her as she wept, one big hand stroking her hair and the other rubbing over her back. “Don’t be ridiculous.” Nicholai whispered, his head bent to the shell of her ear, “You are the only woman I would ever want as my wife. I love you so much, misconceptions and all.” He chuckled, then hugged her tighter. He wondered if might not be worth the risk of pregnancy to alleviate the worries her ignorance was causing her. There was one way that he could show her that there was nothing the matter with her, but doing so would risk her becoming pregnant, which was something that neither of them were particularly comfortable with. A child born to a female slave was considered a slave too, regardless of who their father was. Given how he’d been struggling to earn the drachmas to buy Dawn’s freedom, Nic did not wish to add a baby to the equation.
As she cried herself out, Nic shifted, laying her back on the bed, “Stay here. I’ll be right back.” He slid off the bed, walking over to get the another cloth which he dampened before returning and gently washing her face free of her recent weeping. He wiped his neck and chest, then topped the cloth back into the basin. Stretching out again beside her, Nic pulled her close, her head pillowed on his shoulder. “I love that you’ve never been with a man. That you trust me enough to kiss and cuddle, but…” He let out a breath, “People don’t usually… Um… mate like goats, horses, or pigs do, the back way I mean." A devilish impulse came over him and he rolled over, tucking her under him, his weight again braced on his arms as he pressed the front of his body to hers, his face overs hers, “This is how I would make love to you Dawn. At least for your first time.” He assured her, then kissed her tenderly, “Face to face.”

It was a good thing Dawn had not caught a hint of his desire to laugh, else her tears veer to rage. Tiny fists might have rained upon his chest with the strength of a thousand rain drops, utterly painless and beyond adorable. Alas the Fates spared him.
Instead he gently stroked her hair, spoke soothing words, and eased all her worries leaving nothing more than a hiccup of a breathe in the wake of her break down. The puffy chasms to her soul, were void of the liquid pools after a time, replaced by crystal clear chocolate hues. "I love you too." She said softly. She meant each word.
She frowned with concern as he slipped away from her side but smiled upon his return. He wiped away the salted cracks of her shattered interior. All was well and she lay back feeling drained and—“Wh-“
A simple shift of their forms and he was atop her once more. He still showed interest. He didn’t think she was the utmost worst decision of his life. In fact he even seemed willing to discuss this right of passage with her. Her smile eased past the horizon of her lips.
“Oh…” She said as she looked down between them, studying their position with a certain intensity. “You mean there are other ways to do it? How many? Will…will it hurt? How…how many times have you done this? What if I’m not as good as the others? Why have you withheld for so long?” She was curious, about everything. He hadn’t exactly told her he didn’t want to get her pregnant, that part of the equation oddly enough hadn’t even crossed her mind. Perhaps because she had been obsessing over the act itself rather than the result.

Nic’s amusement was fueled primarily because of the speed at which she’d rambled out her speech, very nearly with a single breath. Not that he’d have done so to hurt her feelings in the slightest. There would be other days in their married life for her to pummel him for some failing of his in their future.
Smiling widely, his hand cupped the back of her head when she told him she loved him too. Having her in his arms was a best thing that had happened to him all day. Though he’d all but forgotten the gift basket Persephone’ had given him just an hour or so ago. The room was cool enough that the food would be fine to eat unless they left it for a few days, and the weather turned exceptionally warm.
Nic was most definitely interested in his young wife, but he’d been without a woman for the last few months since he wanted Dawn not some other woman just to take the edge off so to speak. No other woman stirred him the way she did even without her even really trying. He was a sucker for her sweet nature and kind heart. Even her bouts of clumsiness appealed to him.
Nic chuckled when she studied the way he loomed over her so intently, love for the lovely, sweet, pure hearted woman on her back under him. “Is this a test?” He teased, then answered her questions, “Yes. Several… That I know off anyway. Yes…” He let out a breath, offering her a reassuring smile, “But just the very first time a woman lies with a man. What? Made love to the woman of my heart? Never.” Nic threw back his head and laughed til tears came. “Again, you needn’t worry that. Like I said, it’ll be the first time for us both.”
Nic pressed his forehead to hers again, eyes closed for a moment, “I don’t want our children born into slavery, and not making love with you is the surest way to ensure you don’t become pregnant.” He’d wanted her of course, but he was trying to be safe, and make sure that their children were not born into slavery. He thought he was close to having enough to purchase Dawn from the Xanthos family, but he wasn’t sure exactly how much a slave as lovely as Dawn would really go for.

He was so calm, confident, and all knowing in her eyes. She smiled with admiration back up at him as he vanquished the worries that plagued her and shed light on the corners that frightened her. Arms encircled his body, or at least attempted to embrace his mass as she reached up to kiss him. How else could she reward him for such brave deeds? After all the willingness to navigate the maze of a young woman's mind was about as tricky as slipping through Daedalus' maze while trying to avoid the detection of the Minotaur.
Lips locked and warmth spread through her form as with quite a bit of practice she had come to be quite the kisser, and one could hope in due time an equally good lover. With the tide of clarity having dragged her dreadful thoughts back into the abyss of unconsciousness, she actually began to think with some clarity. His lips had the salty taste of the sea impressed on them. His tongue a lingering sourness from bile. Finally she parted with a bit of a sigh, letting the wind ease from her sails of desire. "Nic..." She spoke softly. "You forgot to stare at the horizon like I told you too didn't you?"
Her poor hero, a match for Hercules she believed, beaten dreadfully so by Poseidon's domain. "Stare at the horizon and you'll forget the motion, or is it avocado?...I think both, next time you must bring an avocado with you, though we must beg Hera that such a trip not be too soon." She kissed him briefly, and then pushed up at him, "Lay down" She would then do her best to reach for the gift basket, "Bread...where is the bread?...When was the last time you ate?"
She was truly a complex woman. Weren't they all? One moment she was an excitable child, the next and emotional teenage wreck. However, when the enthusiasm waned and her nervous dithers were set in their rightful place, he would get a compassionate somewhat-sensible woman. She had her bout of excitement. He slew the Minotaur and rescued her from the depths of her own mind, and now she was going to take care of him.

He slew the Minotaur and rescued her from the depths of her own mind, and now she was going to take care of him.

Nic had no problem easing her fears, he told her the truth, since he trusted her as she trusted him. As she leaned up to kiss him, her arms sneaking around his waist, Nic lowered himself to make it easier for her to reach, kissing her gently, lingeringly, though allowing her to guide the kiss’ depth. When Dawn came out of her shy shell she had never once failed to both surprise and delight him.
Nic returned her kisses with an eagerness he had only for her, his body looming over her, his arms keeping his full weight from crushing her to the be beneath her. Her kips were sweet, and he didn’t taste salt from his own skin on her yet. Just enjoyed being with her again, safe at home.
He blinked when she softly asked him if he’d tried her latest seasickness remedy. “Huh? Oh, right. I did actually. It just didn’t work for me. Not a bit.” He’d stayed on the deck as much as he could on the journey over, but while it was a novel change to vomit overboard, he’d had to dodge the sailors and the princess far too often.
Nic stared down at her, rolling to the side so she could get up and bustle about the room. He tucked his hand under his head, relaxing against his pillows at her command. “As you wish.” he said with a wink her direction. “I ate a little dinner last night. I just couldn’t keep anything down,” He confessed somewhat sourly.
Nic watched as she dug through the gift basket from the now crown princess, fighting the urge to sleep again. He’d been in short supply of that as well during the ship trip back from Taengea. “There should be bread in the basket, love. Fruits and cheeses too. Enough for us both.”

Dawn found the bread and moved to the small window sill where she broke off a portion, a silent word of thanks towards the Gods for bringing her husband back home safely. She knew the powers of Poseidon went far beyond that of sea sickness. She then turned and went back to the bed breaking off a chunk for him. "Cheese is the last thing you need." She said as she offered it to his lips.
Once he took her offer her hand went to brush over the dark locks sprouting from his head. Easing back the tendrils of hair in a soothing manner. "And I suppose you haven't had much sleep either?" There was an apology in the tone of her voice. "Perhaps I should leave you to rest hmm? Return at night fall and hope you will not be awake with the stars?" She moved up closer next to him snuggling against him as she fed him bread, but took none for herself.

Nic opened his eyes when Dawn spoke, her voice coming from just above him. He nipped the offered piece of bread out of Dawn’s fingers, chewing and swallowing before he speaking. “That may be so, but you can eat it. I’d hate for the princess’ gift to be wasted.” He said gently, though he referred to the food, as he already had plans for the gold they’d been gifted by Persephone. That would be added to what he’d earned already to buy Dawn’s freedom.
Nicholai’s eyes dropped to half closed with a dreamy smile when she smoothed back his dark brown hair with her fingers. “It’s okay.” He breathed, “I like spending time with you. ‘Sides I’ve got tomorrow off so…. He yawned, “I need to eat though.” He wrapped his arm around her waist when she snuggled against him on the bed, eating what she fed him, sharing several of the bites of fresh baked bread with her, and urged her to add the cheese and fruit to her meal. He nipped one bite of the fruit and cheese for himself, making her squeal and swat at him for his greediness. Finally he shook his head, indicating he'd had enough and let his head drop back against the pillows behind him. "Do you have to help the princess unpack?" He asked sleepily, eyes bare slits at this point. "I don't want you to get in trouble over me." The last words were slurred as he teetered on the verge of sleep again.
