“Celine?” Maximus said beginning to carry her up the stairs, she was very light and Maximus has worked on his upper body strength for the past 5 years. If he were to be a successful Hoplite, then the strength to efficiently carry a shield and a spear is a must. Celine was no big deal though Maximus was worried about tripping on the skirts of her dress. “I-I still have your hair necklace,” he said motioning to the jewelry wrapped around his neck. “I was wondering if you could make another necklace this time out of your hair. It’s a Greek tradition to do so and I was hoping it would grant more luck on the field.” The young man admitted that not only that he liked when Celine wore that dress he gave her 2 years ago, he also enjoyed it when she fingered her earrings. “I really, really hope that you dress like this every single day during the war.” Max gulped. “Don’t worry about me though Celine, I’m a soldier trained to be one since I was six years old. I may be trained to die for my Kingdom but I will not throw it so foolishly now that I know what I know.” Maximus gently placed Celine on the top of stairs and the young man caressed her cheek enjoying the softness of her skin. “I’m going to survive, I’m going to live on for you Celine. You’ve always been the optimistic one. I don’t want you to lose hope, I don’t want you to shed any tears.” He sounded different, it felt as though he was even more confident and mature. Which was strange considering Maximus always felt assured of himself. It was through unleashing of the restraints he put on himself was that he can see clearly. The secrets he buried in his heart were coming out. In a way releasing the things that he kept in his heart was liberating yet terrifying if Maximus was not aware about his love for Celine, then Gods knows how many other things he wasn’t aware of. Celine heard Maximus saying “but” it was still the matter of Nethis. Whenever Maximus thought about her like he’s doing now, his heart still swells with passion and his stomach churns creating an uncomfortable feeling. He was still in love with Nethis the same way he was for Celine and it was tearing Maximus to pieces. How will Celine react if Maximus confesses that he loved Nethis? The young man closed his eyes trying to clear his mind and then instinctively launched himself towards Celine’s lips. Maximus grabbed Celine from the top of the ship and bought her down to the lower deck. “Say it,” he said his eyes pleading while he kissed her passionately. “Say what you were thinking when you first kissed me.” It was as if Maximus was taking on a Hydra and sliced off its head only to see more heads unleashed. It was a problem that Maximus will continuously have to deal with and one that’ll become worse as the war goes on. But with Celine breathing her soul into Maximus’ mouth he felt like he can take on the world.

But with Celine breathing her soul into Maximus’ mouth he felt like he can take on the world.
His idea about another necklace- presumably for her- was a good one. Assuming she had any hair left and didn’t pull it out in the time it took to get to Egypt that was!
Celine nodded. “One for me, one for you- and we’ll kiss each other’s for extra luck. This also means my hair will be short for awhile- but don’t worry, it grows fast!”
When Celine heard Max say that he hoped she would dress like this every day for the rest of the war, she laughed. “I didn’t exactly have time to pack. It could be disastrous if I’m discovered, because I know other men might also want to do things to me in that dress, but I love you so much I didn’t think.” About anything but that, she added in her thoughts.
“Max…” Celine had to admit something else, too, though if she had known he likely felt the same way, it was possible she wouldn’t have.
“I always knew I was brave, even though I lost a little bit of that because of the fire. I’ve regained a lot of it due to my friendship with you and Adelpha and Basil. But even still, I don’t know what’s happening to me. This isn’t me… usually, I mean. It’s who I became the minute I realized that this would be the first time in a long time that none of you would be anywhere close enough to visit. And then…it… it just slipped out. I had wanted to tell you, but in private, not in front of the whole of Colchis! I’ve lost myself….” So many emotions were in those last few words that it probably would have been hard for her to name them all. She gulped, and then sighed. “Well, if your mind and heart insist that you have to be reckless sometimes, it’s much more fun to do it with someone else joining you, right?” She gave him a somewhat shaky smile, still a little unnerved by the changes in herself.
When he didn’t answer her question about why he had added ‘but’ to his confession about having always loved her, she had a feeling that he might have been wanting to tell her about the other woman he might love, but probably stopped himself. What if it was someone whom Celine was acquainted with? That thought bothered her, but she decided not to dwell on it for long, focusing on the first part of that sentence instead.
‘I’ve always loved you, Celine.’
Maybe, if they spent enough time together, the ‘but’ wouldn’t exist anymore. One could hope, right? He had carried her to the top of the stairs, and then to the lower deck so gently and firmly that somehow she was even more eager to show him just how much she loved him, and what he would be missing if he didn’t choose her. She did wonder then if he and this other person had ever had intercourse, but she wasn’t sure how to ask him without it hurting if she didn’t like the answer and so, for now, knowing they mutually loved each other was enough. It had taken enough bravery to admit she loved him, and then, when he had still seemed confused, to come to Taengea on a merchant ship in the spur of the moment to explain. To know that he would try to be as careful with his life as possible and not do anything reckless was comforting; still, it felt as though she needed something more…and he seemed more confident as he spoke, and his kiss gave her as much courage as she expected hers did to him.
‘Say it. Say what you were thinking when you first kissed me. ‘
“Before I do- did you know that I’ve heard tell ancient man- before our time- believed that when a man and a woman kissed, it was as if their souls were mingling? I think that’s what’s happening here, to us right now…” She paused for effect.
“I love you, I love you, I love you... ten thousand times and more…”
Celine’s heart raced as she claimed his lips and poured herself into his soul with another raging kiss, answering the passion that had been in his last one with her own.
When their lips pulled apart, her heart was still racing, and she trembled with both excitement and nerves. If he said yes to what her heart, her soul, and her body were currently asking for, she knew that it would mean more to her than any other time she’d…experimented…
Maybe having something else happen other than kisses would bring even more luck to them both, she thought.
Celine couldn’t stop her trembling, and it was also causing her to stutter a bit, but she managed- barely- to say, “I-I know right now probably isn’t the best time to do it. I-I don’t want to get caught while we’re still here on the ship- named after Hermes or not! But- but somewhere…, would you like to…make love?” she whispered in his ear. Her heart beat even faster waiting for his answer. Somehow, she couldn't put it any other way, though if he hadn't understood the innuendo in the phrase 'slept together,' she was concerned Max wouldn't understand this. Still, to simply call such an act what it was somehow seemed crass after they had been speaking so romantically.

There was always a sense of melancholy when Maximus first met Celine. She was very intelligent, observant and was polite, she was also into stories like he was which was why he took a liking to her. The moment that Celine mentioned that a lady gives offers the Gladiator to kiss her hand for luck, It was when Maximus drawn to her. Maximus remembered the rush of adrenaline the moment he kissed her hand and felt tempted to hug Celine tight. That was part of the memory that Maximus forgot, he remembered kissing Celine's hand and smiling at her but the rest of it: Maximus' true feelings about Celine and kissing her hand was suppressed for years. The young man wondered why he tried so hard to forget?
“One for me, one for you- and we’ll kiss each other’s for extra luck. This also means my hair will be short for awhile- but don’t worry, it grows fast!”
"Well," Maximus looked down on the ground feeling shameful. "I was hoping that you would make a new necklace for me this time out of your hair." The young man instinctively began to fiddle with his necklace he hated feeling helpless especially in front of a woman he confessed his love to. "I've heard a hair necklace grants a person protection everywhere they go whenever they wear it."
Maximus' father said that it was natural for a soldier to get superstitious before battle. There was a high probability of death so it meant that a Hoplite would cling on to a rusty nail or anything that they think is blessed when they head into battle. With Maximus, he was taught to put aside superstition and focused on his duty if he died then he made sure that he died an honorable death in favor of Ares. But here he was right now begging Celine to make him a good luck charm. In one day, Maximus threw everything he was taught out he wondered what his father would think of him.
He didn't know why he bought Celine back downstairs, but he felt a rush of passion coursing throughout his body. It overrode his capacity for logic and reason and was replaced by a wave of lasciviousness it surprised him and scared him. The love for Celine...... Maximus wondered if it was going to be a hindrance in his duty to Colchis. At least with Nethis, he wrote a letter to her and was done with it. Perhaps a few longing thoughts about Nethis would haunt the young man during but nothing he can't handle. However his best friend, the woman who he found that he was in love with was a different matter. She loved him and was sacrificing everything to be with him. Putting both in danger.
Celine was trembling her body was vibrating to the point where Maximus pulled her into a hug while rubbing her back. “I love you, I love you, I love you…a thousand times and more…” he heard Celine say.
"I love you,." He let his heart do the talking as he felt Celine pull him down for another passionate kiss. The young man rubbed her exposed back faster and harder as he gently bumped foreheads with her.
I-I know right now probably isn’t the best time to do it. I-I don’t want to get caught while we’re still here on the ship- named after Hermes or not! But- but somewhere…, would you like to…make love?”
Make love? What did that mean? Oh how woefully ill-equipped Maximus was when it came to love! "Making love?" Maximus whispered. "Isn't that we're doing? Kissing each other? Isn't that love?"
The young man then frowned. "If that's the case," Maximus kissed Celine with such force that surprised him. He almost regretted letting his heart take over. "Let's make love in here!" The young man breathed as went in to kiss Celine on the lips again gently guiding her against the wall. "I don't care if we're caught," Maximus said pelting Celine's lips with kisses. He almost wondered if Celine's lips would fall off given how many times he kissed her.
"I need you Celine."
Another kiss.
"I need your support and love."
Another kiss.
"I need to focus on the war and it seems that the only way to do it is through you."
Another kiss.
"I love you, I love you, I love you, a thousand times and more."
It was then Maximus was kissing Celine with all of his might, trying to input some of his soul on to her. Maybe if he died then a part of him would live on through Celine so that way she wouldn't be so lonely.

"Let's make love here."
"Oh.... "For a minute, it was all Celine could say. She didn't really understand why he'd want another hair necklace, but then she realized something. “You might lose the other one. That’s fine, then.” She smiled, though a part of her blushed in shame at her girlish dreams of matching hair necklaces. Perhaps that idea was too…sickeningly sweet for Max’s taste. Sometimes Max seemed so confused to her that she almost forgot he was a soldier, and a lieutenant at that, trained in complicated maneuvers.
But Celine was in for yet another shock.
“Y-you mean…Y-you don’t know…?” She raised her head from his shoulder in surprise, and she couldn’t help wondering exactly how it was that he didn’t know what she was referring to, especially because he was massaging her back gently but quickly and firmly in a way that was making her feel relaxed. Surely a young man with hands that talented might know how to…
Celine was at a loss as to how to finish that sentence. She couldn’t remember meeting a man who didn’t know what the phrase ‘making love’ meant. Though Celine had only done so a few times herself, feeling, after doing it a few times out of curiosity, that intercourse was something that required mutual trust in and respect for another person, she did know how it felt when it was pleasurable to her, and what she liked. She chuckled good-naturedly at his confusion. “Well, what I was referring to includes a great deal of kissing, yes, but that isn’t all. It requires a great deal of trust in another person if it is to be done in a way that isn’t unpleasant for either of us. And this thing- it seems almost crass to call it what it really is, when we were speaking so romantically before. But if you really…if you really love a person and respect them, you will want them to have as much pleasure as you do, and I think that’s why it’s referred to as ‘making love. ‘ Though there are some soldiers- maybe even some we know- who give it a more offensive name, I’m sure. And this thing…well, it’s obvious to me that you like my exposed back in this dress. Let’s just say that what I’m referring to means everything is exposed.” She whispered mysteriously. Although she was more than a little nervous about being naked when there was still a chance the two of them might be caught, once Max suggested it, becoming even more eager and passionate in his kisses, Celine didn’t mind at least trying to be brave- for him. Not ever, but especially not when he was kissing her the way he was now.
“Maximus!” she breathed when they finally parted again, a little surprised at the extent of his fervor.
Celine’s hands were trembling so much she thought they’d never stop, but the dress was a chiton, after all, and therefore, after she finally managed to stand up to ready herself, it was relatively easy to remove her belt before carefully opening the chiton, though she did not remove it entirely just yet. She was slow and methodical, her movements graceful and almost feline as she finally walked over to sit facing him once again. Taking one of his hands in hers, she carefully moved it so it would rest in the valley between her breasts, but she could go no further in aiding him for now, even though she longed to, when she felt she had to be alert at all times for the present.
“I-I’m still afraid we might be discovered, and then this journey might very well be over for both of us, but perhaps you are somewhat less fearful since you might be more used to stealth. I’m trembling so much I feel as though my hands won’t do what I want them to, but- but if you could just kindly help me- with my arms- I think the rest will take care of itself. If, that is, you would like to see me unclothed…”
She grinned a little wickedly, though she still tried to keep her voice reassuring for his sake. “I think I would like to see you…” Personally, it was a bit awkward for her to be the one to show him what ‘making love’ meant, even though she had confessed her love and adoration at long last. They had been only friends for so long. Perhaps, on his part, Celine thought that it seemed that Maximus hadn’t realized he’d loved her for so long. Why else would he have seemed like he didn’t understand any of her signals in the past?
Now she wanted everything, even though in fact she had wanted it all for the past three years… his hands on her body, his mouth slowly and gently following their paths, the feel of him inside her… to hold him and to be held by him as they both felt nothing but pleasure…everything.
And so that was what they did, there below the deck of the ship, and for all the kisses she had given Max since she knew he returned her love, Celine felt that none of them- on either of their parts- were more passionate than the ones they were sharing in those moments. She had never felt so connected to anyone else; it seemed their bond was soul-deep.
“There now… you see?” she asked softly when their ardor had cooled a bit, though she still trembled more than she felt was healthy from vigilance as well as passion. “It seemed to me, just for a moment, that we had each other’s very beings inside ourselves… I love you…” Celine would have said yet again the phrase she now knew he liked to hear, but at the moment she was too exhausted, although in only the best way possible. She pillowed her head on his chest with a contented sigh, though it was a little raspier than she would have liked, like the purr of a happy cat, feeling as though they were the only two people in the world. She knew they couldn’t be- because, by the gods, look where she was! But it did feel like they were alone. And she knew that even if she felt a little winded right now, it was for a good reason, and she would most likely be all right. “So this is what it feels like…when it really is making love. When it really matters,” she sighed tiredly, smiling more than it seemed she ever had in her life. “I love you… so much.” He might notice that she wheezed a little, but she hoped he wouldn't worry too much. She wasn't too worried either, even if maybe she should have been, because it seemed she was so in love nothing would ever worry her again at that moment. Max wasn’t Celine’s first man, but he was the first whom it turned out mattered. She hoped he would be the only. And it sounded like if he wasn’t her first, then at least she was his. Somehow it meant even more to Celine that way.

Celine was very hesitant acting surprised that Maximus didn't know about the concept of making love? The young man stared at Celine with a blank expression on his face. "I thought it meant constant kissing?" Maximus asked raising an eyebrow he knew that his brothers back in the barracks would always brag about "fucking the tits off a girl in a brothel" but Maximus often dismissed such talk as irrelevant to a soldier's duty. Maximus was convinced that his father was going to marry him off, before he left on his first tour, Maximus overheard his father explain to his Grandfather that he "big ambitions" and wanted to marry Max to a noble. While Celine was well off, she did not have a family name that gave prestige. So the young man assumed that his life was in order and focused on his being a great soldier when his father found the right match, then Maximus would do his best to make his bride to be feel comfortable around him.
As time went on, Maximus hoped it was Nethis. She was beautiful and willful, a woman who spoke her mind which was something Maximus respected. He prayed to Aphrodite that somehow, someway that Nethis and Maximus will be married. It was the first time that Maximus ever prayed to the Goddess of Love but he knew in his heart that Nethis was the one. But now Maximus wasn't sure, the young man now looks at Celine and now his feelings for her were just as strong as Nethis. How could this be? For years they were only friends and Maximus didn’t think it’ll evolve beyond that. Why did he feel this burning passion for Celine now? Maximus watched as Celine rose a shaking hand to undo the brown rope that was holding her chiton.
“Celine stop!” He wanted to reach out and stop her from taking off her dress. What was she thinking?! Why would she- Oh. Maximus mouth slowly opened as he observed the naked body of Celine. She stared at Maximus with her immaculate bare body her curves and softness, her exposed breasts round and supple. Maximus eyed her up and down feeling shame while he did this. It wasn’t right, he planned on saving himself for the woman he’ll be pledged to marry. Many men married out of wedlock all the time yet Maximus wanted to wait and not be distracted with lustful desires.
Once again Maximus’ mouth was unable to move while Celine moved his now sweating palm between her breasts. The young man’s heart stopped for a brief moment he couldn’t breathe oh how soft her breasts were!
“I-I’m still afraid we might be discovered, and then this journey might very well be over for both of us, but perhaps you are somewhat less fearful since you might be more used to stealth. The soldier known as Maximus was pushed aside for the Maximus that was a imprisoned in his heart for years. It was a bolder Maximus, one who wanted to tell Celine about his love. He grinned back and quickly removed his armor “this journey will not end,” the young man whispered in Celine’s ear. “In fact now that we are about to become one, it will only be the beginning. I’m afraid too but for different reasons, I wanted to save myself for the woman who my father will marry me off to. But I don’t want that woman, I want you, I want all of you Celine.”
The young man leaned close to Celine and kissed her deeply while she guided him through the art of love making. It was nerve wracking for Maximus but Celine was patient and gentle as she was always been. For hours the two became one in an entanglement of love and passion. Tangled limbs and a mess of clothing and armor. Maximus stared at the wooden ceiling his mind in a blissful wonder. His naked chest rising up and down trying to match the rhythm when he was making love to Celine. Part of him wondered if this was a dream and that he’ll wake up on the boat with his brothers on his way to Egypt. Yet the haggard breathing of Celine snapped him back to reality.
“Shhhh,” Maximus slowly turned his body to Celine’s sweating and wheezing one. “Now that was the best drop down and give me twenty I’ve ever experienced.” He smiled while wrapped his powerful arms around her placing her head on his chest. “Breathe Celine,” Maximus said kissing her forehead. “Listen to my heartbeat and know that I love you.”

If, that is, you would like to see me unclothed…” She grinned a little wickedly, though she still tried to keep her voice reassuring for his sake. “I think I would like to see you…”
The soldier known as Maximus was pushed aside for the Maximus that was a imprisoned in his heart for years.
Celine thought Max was beautifully sculpted, even more so than she’d imagined all those times she’d admired his abs while he trained. She couldn’t take her eyes off him, even as he continued to speak. She didn’t quite understand at the moment how he could say this was only the beginning of their journey now that they were going to become one, and yet mention that his father would probably marry him off to someone else in the same breath, but perhaps she was thinking too much. He was probably talking about two entirely different subjects. But was now really the time to think, when she finally had- if only for a moment- what she’d wanted for so long?
‘This journey will not end,’ the young man whispered in Celine’s ear. ‘In fact now that we are about to become one, it will only be the beginning. I’m afraid too but for different reasons, I wanted to save myself for the woman who my father will marry me off to. But I don’t want that woman, I want you, I want all of you Celine.’
Oh, don’t say it! Don’t remind me that I’m not enough! I already know I’m not, every day of my life…I’m not enough for anyone, all seemingly because I’m an outspoken young woman who is also not a noble. Celine thought, her eyes seconds away from filling with tears.
She could have smacked Max at that moment for even mentioning that his father would probably marry him off to another woman, right as they were presumably about to seal their love! But he was probably right, and had probably meant to remind them both that these moments couldn’t last forever. She smiled a little sadly, but she couldn’t be angry- she thought he had only been speaking the truth.
“I-I know. And I’ll probably have to change my personality in order to be able to marry anyone else but you, and that’s the truth of it. I haven’t been able to meet anyone else who respects me as I am, and my father wants me safe… but let’s just be us for now…”
There might, in fact, eventually be a way Max and Celine could be married if they wished, if one looked at things politically, since Celine was an ambassador’s daughter, had presumably had her family targeted for violence once upon a time. and was not Colchian. Max’s father might agree to it, though just how to get him to do so might take some careful planning on the part of Celine’s father. Then again, there were also rumors- though they were only that- about Celine's family possibly seeking nobility, so it might not be so difficult.
Otherwise, however, the ambitions of others would probably ruin both Max and Celine’s lives. But Celine didn’t want to think about it anymore. Since they had finally mutually confessed their love, they only had now, and he’d just said ‘I want you, I want all of you, Celine...’
Her heart thrilled, and when she could do no more a few hours later, she was wearing the biggest smile she ever had in her life, even though her chest hurt. She felt him pull her close and heard him whispering to her to breathe. His kiss on her forehead calmed her, sending a warm feeling into her heart that radiated outward.
‘Now that was the best drop down and give me twenty I’ve ever experienced.’
She tried to sit up and coughed a bit, trying to laugh, meaning for it to sound husky and seductive, not choked and squeaky. “Was it really?” After all, Celine really hadn’t had intercourse with a lot of men. Perhaps she was rusty. She really did want to know how he’d thought she was. She debated saying more, of telling him he wasn’t her first man, but that she hadn’t done it that often, but her lungs wouldn’t let her say more than, “Tea.”
The steam would help, and they’d have to get off the ship to get it. They might as well kill two birds with one stone. And then maybe he could at least walk her to where she had to be to get to a barge.
But first the tea- which would also mean getting off the ship. She tried to control her breathing, and while she still wheezed a bit, she was finally able to match her breathing to his after a few minutes of letting the sound of his heartbeat calm her. Still, Celine’s tension was palpable. She should have thought of a plan to get off the ship before boarding it.

Maximus shuddered to think about the personality change Celine will have to go through if she gets married off to a man. He didn’t want to know what a person as sweet and wise like Celine would become, if anything the young man imagined her to be more withdrawn if she married another man. Maximus closed his eyes while kissing Celine’s cheek, it was better not to think about it. Best to focus on the here and now which was they were naked fresh off having hours worth of passion on the bottom deck of a barge. Maximus’ sense of duty slowly came back to him, for the first in his life he set aside duty for something more personal which was love. Maximus vaguely recalled his drill instructor ranting about how love was the death of duty. Though many of his brothers obviously didn’t hold it to heart, that phrase stuck with Maximus throughout his military career. One can’t effectively hold their allegiance to Colchis while having a lover. A soldier’s duty must come first yet love always gets in a way of a man’s duty. Despite his love for Nethis, Maximus loves Celine passionately. He gave her a piece of himself just as she did for him yet at that moment that Maximus remembered his duty. Could the young man serve Colchis faithfully? He was doing something foolish with Celine and taking her to a warzone! Maximus didn’t want to put Celine in danger but at the same time he couldn’t face the battlefield without her. Maximus was still in a daze when he heard Celine cough calling for tea. His heart began to beat again this time out of desperation. Celine’s breathing problems are coming back. “Celine,” Maximus whispered holding her cheeks. “I love you so much, I gave you a part of me you don’t know how much I wanted to give that part of me to you. You showed me how to do it.” The young man chuckled. “But never the less I am you and you are me. You can over come this I know you can because I gave you my love.” The young man quickly got up and dressed in his armor while giving Celine her dress. “Dress quickly,” he said. “We got to get you out of here.”

Celine could only nod as Max told her to dress quickly. When she could take in air properly again, she would tell him so much. She hadn’t expected their physical passion to be so…draining. She should have, she knew, for in its own way, it counted as exercise. She’d have told him to count it as training for running in battle, and her eyes danced a little in silent laughter at the thought.
When she had slipped on her chiton again and belted it, she nodded, feeling like his words of love were caressing her ears.
“Like exercise, sometimes…” she panted, so he’d know the kind of strain it sometimes put on her body to make love. “Worth it, though.” She had to tell him that much, even though she knew she shouldn’t talk anymore. She squeezed his hand; having him close seemed to help her breathe. Being in love with someone who loved you back was beyond words anyway… She tried to send her thoughts to him in a loving look; he’d likely know what she meant, since they had known each other for nine years. I love you so much back. And I’d go anywhere with you. Her thoughts had been in much the same vein as his own when she thought of marrying another man. Would she lose all the courage she had regained in the nine years since she had come to Colchis, never to feel this way again? Would she become withdrawn and morose again, shy like she’d first been around most people despite still daring to follow Max into the arena at age eleven? Perhaps that incident had been her trying to regain some courage, too, back then.
If she hadn’t had to concentrate on inhaling every breath at the moment, Celine would have said she felt like the ten-year-old girl again, the one she’d been before the fire, before she knew what life could do to a person, and how bad experiences could change them.
Finally!
She wanted that feeling to last forever. By all that was good and holy, she felt as if Hermes himself was carrying her on his wings!
Max was mostly silent waiting for her to dress, and she thought she might understand his thoughts there, too. What were they doing here, both of them, especially Celine, about to drop everything for love and run headlong into a warzone with no thought for anything but breathing some of the same air as her friends and family? It would be some very dusty air, to be sure, but there was ginger for tea in Africa…maybe that would help her breathing, too.
Max had just said that she had the brain of a philosopher not long ago, though, and with that in mind, Celine just barely whispered, “I think they’re wrong. Love might make you fight harder.”
Whomever he had been listening to had probably never had a great love.
She smiled brightly, weak though it still was, and squeezed his hand again, giving him a questioning look.

A cold chill came over Maximus while he watched Celine get dressed. How could he be so foolish and forget about his curse?! According to his mother, the Priest who examined Maximus after his birth claimed that the God of the Sea: Poseidon had cursed Maximus not only rendering him to have children but, in some cases, destroy a woman’s womb. Could it be possible that the uneven breathing that Celine was displaying was not due to her breathing problems but by the fact that her womb was being torn to pieces. It was a silly thing to think about but to a soldier sometimes paranoia can serve as their wisdom. “I think they’re wrong. Love might make you fight harder.” Celine responded in a rough, patchy tone which made Maximus worry for her. They spent hours making love but it seemed to take a toll on her, as for her statement well Maximus did hear rumors of some armies fighting alongside their male lovers in order to make them fight harder. Maximus found it strange and doubted the rumors but if true, he wondered if he could surpass his potential as an effective Hoplite. The young man smirked as he caressed Celine’s cheek he was still feeling that surge of energy from their love making. He wondered though if he should not do it anymore, it was satisfying but would Maximus place Celine’s womb in danger if they ever decide to sleep with each other again. “You know when I first enlisted in the Fifth Phalanx,” he whispered playing with Celine’s earrings. “He said that love is the death of duty. I believed him at first thinking that a soldier should always place his Kingdom and people first. But now looking at you Celine maybe my instructor was wrong. Through our little escapade love can ignite people the same way the Gods ignites the Stars. Perhaps knowing that I have a woman who is in love with me who implanted a piece of her soul into me, will make me stronger and encourage me to go beyond my limit.” Maximus kissed Celine on the lips. “I need you,” he whispered. “It’s going to be dangerous you’ll be in enemy territory and you’ll be in my tent for hours on end. There’s a high chance you and I will be caught but I don’t know.” He kissed on the lips again. “I think it’ll be worth it knowing that I have you to pray and love me. Your soul that you gave me will be my guide while I lead men into battle.” He’ll have to tell Celine about his curse eventually, but right now he was in a blissful peace and did not want to break it. Looking up, Maximus held Celine’s hands and leaned his forehead against hers. “All right,” he whispered. “Just follow me and keep the skirts of your dress up. We don’t strands of it being caught on the upper deck.”

We don’t strands of it being caught on the upper deck.”
His kisses seemed to give her a little of her strength back, the warmth of his forehead against hers steadying her, calming her inside her soul even though her breath still whistled a little when she exhaled.
She nodded as she listened to him explain how it would all go on, squeezing his hand yet again, trying to transmit her thoughts to him. I need you, too. I think I always did, but especially now. And I know it’ll be dangerous, and yet I don’t think I’ve ever felt so safe in my life. Is that weird?
She had so much to tell him when the steam from the tea would ease her breathing. She pressed her lips against his forehead while they were still close together, then hiked up her skirts.
Lead on.
Had she ever been so calm in the middle of an attack on her lungs? That was a miracle in itself that she could still breathe even though his arms weren’t around her anymore. It seemed to take forever, and Celine felt as if she had to make her movements languid and feline so as not to be noticed, even though she could both physically and mentally be in danger.
Remember the arena. Remember how you didn’t want to be noticed there, either, for fear of your father noticing you’d left, or someone catching you before you saw Max. Go slowly now, she tried to tell herself in her thoughts. Proper breathing can wait- for now. Light breaths, remember, like when you told everyone goodbye and didn’t want to burst out crying. And for the love of Aesculapius, the god of healing, don’t cough.
On the other hand…
Hermes , please help me. Lend me the aid of your winged feet. This is taking forever. I hope I don’t…
A wave of dizziness overtook her before she could even think the word ‘faint’, and for a minute she stumbled, barely catching herself before she fell. Her vision was blurring, and she held on to Max’s arm uneasily for a few seconds.
Reaching the upper deck would probably feel like she had just climbed a mountain.
I’ll make it. I’ll make it because I need you and I love you… I’d have happily died after kissing you, let alone making love with you, but now I know you need me too…
And with what seemed the last of her physical strength as they ascended to the upper deck, she sent up a prayer. Gods please don’t let the floor creak any more than it has to. She felt she was becoming tenser by the second now that they were aboveboard, but it was just as much being in Taengea that was making her nervous as it was anything else, though she hadn't done anything quite as risky as sneaking aboard a merchant ship, either. Tea. So many things to still tell him, especially how beautiful it was that he saved himself for me. Then maybe we can spend a few more hours together. Then find a boat- or an estimate of when one will be in port- that I can be on more safely than a merchant ship. Then Max will probably have to go back to his unit.
Making a mental checklist kept her calm.

Celine didn’t need to tell Maximus, he can already tell by the smile on her face and the way she kissed his forehead. Celine needed him as well and is aware of the dangers that lie ahead, danger was a familiar foe with Celine she was convinced all those years ago that her family was targeted in a fire and had nightmares over it. Well Maximus once told her when they were children that he ate nightmares for breakfast. Child’s talk but it always put Celine at ease, taking a deep breath Maximus began to go up the stairs that lead to the upper deck. The young man heard faint chatter from the men on the boat, judging by the slurred pace at which they were speaking, the men were most likely drunk. “That explains why they didn’t come down here while we were making love,” Maximus though being grateful to the Gods. With each step Maximus and Celine took, there was a small creek that followed. Grinding his teeth, the last thing Maximus needed was to be compromised before they even got on deck! In addition to his Hoplite training, Maximus received some training in stealth based missions. Those skills will be useful on the battlefield especially that he looks purely Bedoan. Maximus felt Celine lean on to him, her breathing problems were resurfacing again. Fear began to slowly creep up inside of him, If Celine faints during their escape or worse dies Maximus would never forgive himself. “Celine,” Maximus grabbed her hand and took her behind a lone box watching the men on deck eat some bread and sing songs while simultaneously drink a copious amount of Wine. There were about 5 of them with more on the way Maximus was sure of it. Turning to Celine, Maximus smiled. “Remember what you thought when you first kissed me,” he said smiling. He wanted Celine to repeat it, he wanted Celine to have a phrase to cling on to whenever her breathing problems arose. “Say it Celine,” Maximus whispered softly kissing her on the lips trying to put more of his soul inside of hers. “We are getting out of here,” he said. “If you are unable to walk, than I’ll carry you off this boat.” It was then Maximus swept Celine off from her bare feet and carried her bridal style. “We’re almost there,” he whispered

The creaking of the wood, the near fall, the sounds of the drunken men talking…it all seemed to make her head spin even more. Not with fear exactly, but with an overwhelming sense of helplessness. Why had her body chosen to give up on her now? Maybe the Romans were wrong and love couldn’t conquer all….
And then she was in his arms before she knew what hit her. Frightened because her breathing still felt labored, pleasantly surprised because she hadn’t expected him to sweep her off her feet, and unexpectedly exhilarated because he was probably going to try to make an escape with her in his arms, Celine managed a grin and held onto Max for all she was worth.
“I love you, I love you, I love you, ten thousand times and more…”
It became her lifeline, her mantra, her reason to keep breathing. Oh gods, she loved him so much! With her free hand, she covered her heart, as if to check that it was still beating evenly.
“I love you, I love you, I love you, ten thousand times and more…”
She wondered how far away from the dock a kafenion might be. On top of all this, her head was starting to ache, probably because of her lack of air. “I love you, I love you, I love you, ten thousand times and more…”
She closed her eyes to better focus on how safe she felt with her head against his chest, only now, some time earlier, she had rained kisses on every inch of it… How different life felt now from the day he'd gotten her the dress she was now wearing! Now they knew they were mutually in love, where before she had been miserable, afraid to say anything lest he reject her. His leaving for war had somehow made her brave- and angry enough at the situation- to dare to bare her heart.
“The dress…” she whispered. “Remember? It hurt to breathe then, too. Only this time I’m in your arms…”
Everything had somehow come full circle, again, just the way it had when she gave him the hair necklace and said it was fresh cut flowers and time had seemed to freeze. Brutus the hound didn’t know what he’d unintentionally started back then by ripping the celadon gown to shreds. If she had any dog bones right now, Celine would give him about a million.
And that reminded her…
“I’m going to need another dress. I can’t very well wash my clothes naked.” She had no breath left with which to add ‘anywhere near a war camp, let alone in one’ but she knew Max would probably guess what she meant.
She wondered if he just might be able to find another filmy celadon green one….
Celine opened her eyes, feeling the sunlight hit her face, and despite her still wheezy breaths she felt she’d never been happier. She wondered what the people watching them would think of the chiseled young man in the armor and the fine-boned young lady in his arms. She wished she knew if there were any artists in the crowd; she couldn’t very well paint a picture of their current positions herself, but it might be worth paying to have a portrait of them done for posterity….
Posterity? Now Celine knew she really was close to losing her mind, attack of her breathing problem or not. It was as if she’d totally forgotten that she and Max could likely not be together forever.
As if there were only now.
Or maybe there was only now, and life was made up of many tiny pieces of now that stretched into forever. She reached up to caress Max’s cheek with gentle fingers, and though she had no breath to recite it, a poem she couldn't remember the author of came to mind.
'Some say that the most beautiful thing on this dark earth is a host of horsemen, others that it is an army of foot-soldiers, and others that it is a fleet of ships;
But, I say it is what you love.'
(OOC: Really, Sappho, Fragment 16, but even though she wasn't born until 630, it fits so well!)

“I love you, I love you, I love you, ten thousand times and more…” There was something about that line that placed Maximus at ease, it often took a lot for Maximus to focus and to remove any doubt and fear he might have and have a calm mind. “Have your mind flow like a river going down a gentle stream,” his father once told him. “Do not care whether you live or die, focus on the moment allow the Gods to guide you through battle. You are a conduit, a light in the shadows, only feel do not think and always your instincts.” The problem was that Maximus struggled to purge the fear out of his mind. It took a considerable effort to do so and he ended up frustrated. Yet these simple words spoken by Celine barely above a whisper had Maximus at calm his only goals were getting Celine off this boat and taking care of her breathing problem. “I love you, I love you, I love you, ten thousand times and more…” Maximus was focused on his duty and Celine’s soft and gentle words further placed him at a calm composure. At that moment he was Maximus the soldier, a person who has been training nearly his entire life to be a soldier and serve Colchis faithfully. He was sharp and observant slithering through box to box while carrying a woman in his arms. There was no doubt there was only his duty but it wasn’t to Colchis but rather woman who is snuggling against his chest. “I love you, I love you, I love you, ten thousand times and more…” Although Maximus was in a state of serenity, he couldn’t help but smile at Celine, she never gives up even when everything is against her. It was one of the many qualities Maximus admired about Celine, but he always thought that it was because he thought of her as a sister. However further revelations revealed that Maximus saw Celine more. It was something he needed to figure out why did he bury his feelings for to the point where he forgot. New memories popped up and it muddled everything Maximus had built around himself. Still Celine was here and she was beautiful, the young man planted a kiss on her forehead. “I pledge myself to you Celine of Acrais,” he said spotting an exit. “I have someone to fight for in this war and someone who will cheer me on. As long as I live Celine I will do what ever it takes to keep you safe starting with getting you this tea.” He listened for her desire for a new dress, it was a shame since Maximus loved the dress she was wearing now. “I love the dress you are wearing,” Maximus said as he began to run. “I thought you promised me you’ll wear every day through out the war.” It was selfish of him but there was something about Celine’s dress that made him adore even more. The various colors which reflect her vibrant personality, the cut which revealed her bare leg and of course her bare back. Celine was perfect and the dress complimented that, the young man sprinted out of the boat and on to docks looking back to see if any sailors saw them much to his relief they didn’t. “We did it!” Maximus said placing Celine down. “All right! I believe the Agora isn’t too far from here.”

Every second of Max carrying her off the ship with her clinging to him was punctuated with pain, even as Celine repeated the mantra over and over again. The touch of her hand on his face was the only thing that made her sure she was still there in this moment…
How was it that time could move so slowly and so quickly all at once? How could she feel she could stay this way forever one minute if it would keep him with her, yet feel like she was going to go to the Underworld in the next minute and be afraid?
Because it’s never been this bad, Celine of Acaris. You’ve never made love quite this much. You never loved anyone else enough to let them see you as you were, even if that meant seeing you in the middle of an attack on your lungs.
Wasn’t that what true love was? Not being afraid to let the one you loved see you at your worst? Even though she was scolding herself, Celine fought a grin. And then, when Max kissed her forehead, the grin won.
‘I pledge myself to you Celine of Acaris….’
That was all she heard. And she felt that he had, with everything.
“You did. How lovely of you… to save yourself…”
For those moments in time, she’d had all of him, his first kisses then, and his first lovemaking just now. If only she’d known he’d loved her all along- if it hadn’t seemed like he was oblivious. He would have had all of her, too, then.
While he might be smiling down at her and thinking she never gave up, she knew differently.
You give up far too easily, Celine of Acaris.
Well, not now. Not anymore, ever again.
‘We did it!’ Maximus said placing Celine down. ‘All right! I believe the Agora isn’t too far from here.’
It was more sheer force of will than actual strength that kept Celine on her feet when he set her down.
“That was so…” She shook her head. Even if she had had the breath, for it, Celine wasn’t sure there were any words to describe what she’d just felt. “Never again. I promise.” The next boat she would get on would have a seat that she’d rightfully paid for.
Celine followed her nose to the spot in the agora where there was a kafenion; Max would be able to tell, too, not only by his own sense of smell, but by the way Celine’s breathing eased when her nose inhaled the steam. She even managed to keep the tension her mind wanted to feel here in Taengea from showing in her body, though she didn’t let go of his hand, either.
Cups of rich, steaming Greek coffee were soon put in front of them, two for her, since she’d have to travel on alone and might not know where the next place with coffee or tea would be right offhand.
She took a sip of the bitter but smooth brew, leaning against the wall a little to steady herself before being able to take what felt like her first full breath of air in ages.
“I love you, I love you, I love you, ten thousand times and more…”
Could she ever really say that enough? Maybe not as long as she lived.
Which reminded her, she still had two things to try again to explain to him. It seemed that he hadn’t understood either one. But then again, she hadn’t exactly had the breath for a lecture, on poetry or anything else. She took another deep drink of her coffee, feeling that the faster she drank it, the faster its effects might kick in, before starting the poem, though she still spoke slowly.
“Some say that the most beautiful thing on this dark earth is a host of horsemen, others that it is an army of foot-soldiers, and others that it is a fleet of ships;
But, I say it is what you love. “
“See, to me, it seems like my even remembering this at such a time-“ Celine set down her cup, patting her aching chest for emphasis- “Means that it all will be okay- that we are doing the right thing, and, maybe, for you, that duty and love aren’t always separate. You can love me, and love Colchis- both equally- and fight for us both, and so your duty becomes to us both, because somehow-“Celine lost her words again, and this time it was from too much emotion she couldn’t quite find the right words for.
“Somehow- without love… Colchis can be less, can’t it? If the person you love isn’t there, it might feel less like home.”
In her mind, it explained everything- even why Celine felt uneasy about staying behind with so many of her friends and family gone, when she no longer feared physical injury or death for political reasons.
“And as for the other dress, I need it because I can’t wash the one I’m currently wearing if I have it on, right?. I love you passionately, Maximus of Laconia, and you only, and if you think I’m going to chance another man possibly seeing me... naked... in a war camp, maybe you really are thickheaded.” She couldn’t quite manage a laugh, but she gave him a wink, though in reality, she was only half teasing. Still, now that she could breathe more easily again, she was tempted to kiss him thoroughly in front of everybody in the kafenion.
Until she realized that maybe she didn’t deserve his love now that she had it. Celine took another drink of coffee, then lowered her head in shame, feeling unworthy to look at him. Max was somehow more handsome to her because he’d given himself only to her… “Or maybe I’m the stupid one…for not realizing that you loved me even if you didn’t say it. If only I would have waited just a little longer, then maybe I could have…saved myself…the way you did until just now,” she whispered, her face coloring. “It was only a few times, and my fault for being curious, but if I’d known you loved me too, none of them would have ever happened. I love you so much, but I gave up too easily. Can you forgive me- and dare I ask you to continue loving me? “
Celine had neither the breath nor the tears for crying yet, but at least they were fairly secluded here in their corner of the kafenion, so few people would probably see her red face, even if a full audience might have been well deserved.

Celine loved tea not only was it the drink that kept her breathing problems at bay but she claimed it was good maintain a healthy and smooth skin. Despite the fact that Celine often dragged him around when to the tea stores in Colchis, it wasn’t Maximus’ favorite drink. He was more of a wine person like many of his fellow Greeks though part of him wondered if his fondness for tea was influenced by the Professor who couldn’t get enough Tea to go alongside the copious amount of opioids he consumed daily. Celine would often talk Maximus’, Adelpha’s and Basil’s ears off about the many different kinds of tea there was around Greece. Whenever she came at the Agora the first she would look for if not the latest dresses were type of tea leaves imported from around the world. Maximus admired Celine’s passion for tea even if he found the beverage to be a little dull.
The young man allowed Celine to take point, she always like to say that she had a good nose for tea as the fumes would clear her lungs whenever she had problems breathing. Celine’s lead Maximus deep into the Agora where the Kafenion was located at. Her hand squeezed Maximus’ for comfort while the young man smiled squeezing back apparently she was still embarrassed about coming into Tangea alone. A smiling man approached the two and lead them to their seats, Maximus took out some coin and ordered two cups of tea which came almost immediately. Maximus sat down and took a sip, feeling a sharp pain on his lips. The beverage was too hot, he always preferred his drinks to be cold. Celine on the other hand took a small, short sip but the results were huge.
“I love you, I love you, I love you, ten thousand times and more…”
Maximus smiled, Celine’s voice came out clear and fresh. The words once again placed Maximus’ mind in a state of calm as he reached out to touch her soft hand. “Never stop saying that,” he said half jokingly.
“Some say that the most beautiful thing on this dark earth is a host of horsemen, others that it is an army of foot-soldiers, and others that it is a fleet of ships;
But, I say it is what you love. “
Maximus raised an eyebrow; he wasn’t much of a poet only reading poetry written by Greek warriors on the battlefield. However, Adelpha and Celine loved poetry and would often recite to one another as children. Before Maixmus could ask what it meant though, Celine answered.
“See, to me, it seems like my even remembering this at such a time- Means that it all will be okay- that we are doing the right thing, and, maybe, for you, that duty and love aren’t always separate. You can love me, and love Colchis- both equally- and fight for us both, and so your duty becomes to us both, because somehow-“
“I guess,” Maximus answered unevenly. “This is all too new to me, I don’t know how to deal with this. It’s all coming at too fast.”
The young man sighed, why couldn’t things be so simple? Celine then kept saying that she wanted to wash her dress constantly which would be tough considering that she will be in Maximus’ tent the entire time. “I don’t have enough coin for a dress,” he said. “Maybe when we get to Egypt and I can save up.”
Who knows what they’ll face but it wasn’t the time for shopping. It was then Celine was one the verge of tears. “Or maybe I’m the stupid one…for not realizing that you loved me even if you didn’t say it. If only I would have waited just a little longer, then maybe I could have…saved myself…the way you did until just now It was only a few times, and my fault for being curious, but if I’d known you loved me too, none of them would have ever happened. Maximus raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?” he asked. “You know whatever you said I don’t care, I love you Celine. Isn’t that simple? Can’t things be the way they were it was just easy to accept things?”
Maximus sighed and kissed Celine on the lips. “Please repeat it,” he whispered. “You know what I mean?”

Maximus smiled, Celine’s voice came out clear and fresh. The words once again placed Maximus’ mind in a state of calm as he reached out to touch her soft hand. “Never stop saying that,” he said half jokingly.
“Some say that the most beautiful thing on this dark earth is a host of horsemen, others that it is an army of foot-soldiers, and others that it is a fleet of ships;
I love you so much, but I gave up too easily. Can you forgive me- and dare I ask you to continue loving me? “
