It was the Summer of 672. The humidity of the day gave her reason to melt. The general demeanor of the other slaves wearing on her nerves as the day progressed. Dawn was generally a sweet woman, but even she had to draw a line in the sand on certain matters, matters she was in no mood to discuss as she finally turned in from the arduous day.
Feet dragged along the floor, shoulders sagged under the weight of the day, and new sheets nearly dropped to the floor by the time she arrived at Nic's living quarters. When she opened the door and slipped inside, she closed the door and merely let the sheets drop unceremoniously. After all they were a guise to reaching his room. Nothing more. Nothing less. Her lithe form moved from door to bed, her favorite spot as it was here she was allowed to slip into his arms. There was a sigh as she removed her sandals and then went to massage the soles of her feet.

Nic had been training with his men in the courtyard by the wing of the palace that housed the barracks. It was hot, but by this time of the day, the courtyard was in the ever lengthening shadow cast by the building. With the life of the princess at stake, Nic could not afford to let his skills get rusty so he worked out every day when he could, though when at sea he did not have the strength or energy to do any sort of workout aboard any ship.
When Dawn came back to the rooms that they shared more often than not, though technically were meant for him alone. But no one really cared that Dawn slept there with him most nights. Emilia was all too aware of how he felt about Dawn, though she was still in the dark about how he’d secretly wed the beautiful young slave. Half the palace was likely aware of the depth of his feelings for Dawn, there was no crime in that, just in the fact that he’d married her when she belonged to the royal family.
After the training session ended, Nic gave a few orders to some of the men who were going on duty then headed back to his quarters intending to get a fresh change of clothes and go to the baths, but when he walked into his rooms and saw Dawn sitting on the edge of the bed, rubbing her foot, he smiled.
“Off already?” He asked, closing the distance between them with a few quick steps, bending to kiss her tenderly. “Feet hurt?” He murmured, dropping down beside her, shifting so his half faced her, taking her other foot in his hands and started rubbing it gently, soothing away the aches. “I’m all out of oil so let me know if you want me to stop.”

Her brown eyes shifted to the doorway as she heard someone come in, but the sound of familiar steps put her at ease, and then his visage, followed by his sincere tone, and gentle touch. Tears filled her eyes and she smiled. She knew it was nothing to shed tears over. She knew that compared to the rest of the world she was a wishy washy well whose depths contained no end.
"Yes, I mean no. I mean." She gave an exasperated sigh. "Just a rough day is all I got frustrated with Olivia, and...well I yelled at her." It wasn't like Dawn to yell at the other slaves, especially not those directly beneath her. "I know she's young and inexperienced, and she is trying, but how difficult is it to hand over a brush. I told her at least five times. Then the cooks messed up Emilia's meal, and the sheets for her bed were anything but fresh as the rain from earlier...Finally the Princess desired to go to temple, I could hardly blame her, but while she was there I was dusting Apollo's statue...and...and" She just shook her head stopping before she broke down all over again. The back of her hand dabbed at her eyes. "Princess Emilia would like me to inform you we must go to Apollo's temple in two days...I kind of..."
Her cheeks flushed in embarrassment. She had to look away. She pulled her foot from his grasp. His tender touch she did not deserve. "I took his, his snake, his spitter, his you know..." Her gaze made a quick gesture to her husband's crotch. "And his finger, but I didn't mean to! I really didn't!"

Nic didn’t see the glint of tears in her eyes, his own gaze focused on the small foot in his hands, his thumbs pressing firmly against the arch of her foot, stroking from heel to toes, over and over.
Nic offered her a sympathetic smile, still massaging her foot, “I’m sure it’s not as bad as all that.” He said lightly. “I mean, older servants often yell at the younger ones. It’s just the way of things.” He’d been yelled at plenty when he’d been training to be a member of the royal guard, and in his turn had yelled at the newer recruits.
“Apollo’s temple?” He asked, looking up from her foot, dwarfed in his big hands to her face. “Why’re we going to the Naos of Apollo?” The way she dabbed at her eyes warned him that something must’ve happened that she had yet to tell him about.
Nic had been rubbing Dawn’s foot gently so it wasn’t had for her to pull her foot from his hands, but he’d have certainly argued that she deserved tenderness now more than ever. When she told him what she’d done earlier, he burst out laughing, nearly falling off the bed as he gave in to his mirth.

Dawn shook her head, "No no. You misunderstand me Nic I was in the garden where there was a-- Why are you laughing!? Stop laughing! It's not funny! Hush! Stop!" She started hitting him in the arm and chest not that it felt like anymore that the tap of a fly. "Stop laughing! It's Apollo! He's a God of Plagues you know, and I...I took his, well it's not funny!"
She watched him as he just about fell off the bed. Her own expression not nearly as merry. "You won't be laughing when he curses us Nic, it's why we have to go to his temple! So we're not all doomed, do you really think Hera has any appreciation for this?...Well come to think of it, Leto and Zeus...No no I shouldn't be thinking of such...Oh Nic stop your laughter." She whacked him again for good measure. "It's not funny!"

Nic wasn’t laughing because Dawn had broken the manhood off of the stature of Apollo, but because he knew his shy young wife very well, so had no trouble imagine that the look on her face must’ve looked like when it happened. He believed in the power of the God, so he knew Apollo was powerful enough to know what was the true source of his laughter. Nic wasn’t able to speak just then, instead he feebly waved an arm, fending off his wife’s attack.
“No…” He managed to gasp, catching her wrist in his hand after she whacked him one last time. “I wasn’t…. laughing because you accidentally…. Broke the statue of Apollo.” Nic gasped, then wiped away the tears of mirth, and let out a deep shuddering sigh, chuckling deep in his throat as he fought to normalize his breathing again, "But I can just imagine what the look on your face must’ve been.” He smiled at her, still hold her wrist in his hand. Using it to tug her closer, “I’m sorry for laughing my love. It just….” He shrugged, looking apologetic, since he had not meant to make light of her fears.

Dawn wouldn't hurt a fly, so her swatting at him was comical at best in itself, and it was no surprise when he managed to take hold of her. She fussed for a time trying to twist and turn her wrist free before finally just settling with a pout.
"You-You...oh." She said feeling silly if not rather dumb for assuming he would laugh at a God or her molestation of one's statue. "So does this mean you'll come in two days time to the temple with me and Lady Emilia?" She smiled sweetly almost innocently. They both knew though that she had done a wrong. At least by now she was no longer sobbing. "Oh and they are going to make Him a new statue, a better statue! So...maybe I did a good?"

Nic’s hold on her wrist, while secure was still gentle enough that not even her twisting this was and that was enough to bruise the delicate skin of her wrist during her efforts to free herself during her fit of pique.
“Of course. I am her body guard after all.” Nic said easily, then caught the oh-so-innocent-smile on her face and lifted an eyebrow, “Am I going to have to pay for it?” He asked, for that did worry him a little, not because he didn’t have the money, but because it meant that much longer before he could free Dawn. “I’m sure that Apollo will be pleased with his fine new statue.”
He shifted to the edge of the bed, and drew her down onto his lap, arms cradling her close against him, “I do love you so.” He told her, tipping her face up so he could kiss her.
