Hello, everyone! In an effort to continue to push our "inclusion not isolation" policy, the staff will be putting on a video game night. This is open to absolutely anyone and everyone, from our readers to our members. The goal is to encourage everyone to get together, have a laugh, and relax while we all fight for fake dominance over games of trivia and bad drawings. Sounds fun, right?
What are we playing today? Well, everyone! We're going to play some online party games together! Jackbox Games are packs of party games that can be played over a livestream (or in the same room) using your phone, tablet, or computer. Each game hosts 6 to 10 people to play and up to 10,000 to spectate. Spectators can still participate in the games by voting, betting, etc on the players. They can tip the scales of who wins or who loses the games.
What if there are too many people to play? Good news! There isn't! Inclusiveness also includes sharing. Sharing is caring. Everyone will get to take turns playing the various games. Many are short, mostly 15 minute games, so its super easy to get many games in in a single night. Everyone will get a turn both playing and spectating!
How do we play? It seems a lot more complicated than it actually is. We will play the games in the voice chat of the main discord server and we will livestream the game to all of you to see. If at any point you lose view of the stream, you can double click on the streamer's name to bring the window back up.
You, the players and spectators, will play the games using your phone, tablet, or computer. You'll do this by going to jackbox.tv. There, you will find a landing page that will ask for a room code and a username. The room code will change with each game we play and we ask that you use your username on the discord as your username in the game. You don't have to sign up for anything at all! You just have to go to the website and put in the code that is presented to you.
From there, the game will begin. A lot of the time, during the interludes within the games, you will only see a blank screen. However, once the games start and we actually start a round of trivia, drawing, etc., your device will show you options, a drawing page, a text box, or whatever else you need to participate. Spectators will also have some options.
By the Way Sometimes technology can be a bit of a doofus. Our computers are smart, but they don't have common sense. Sometimes they do things we don't want them to do or don't completely understand. Sometimes your internet just plain doesn't like you. If you run into technical issues, we will do our best to work with everyone to get it fixed and situated to the best of our abilities.
The sounds of each game are timed. If you lose connection on a round, you can a) refresh your device and log back in (it should save your place), or b) let the game finish and then come back when we're in between rounds. There will be a dedicated text channel for ensuring that everyone is engaged and in working order between each round.
The big thing here is that we want everyone to have fun. If you’re having technical difficulties or feel overwhelmed, just walk away, let the round go and make a cuppa. There’s no need or fun in getting stressed. So, we let those for whom it’s working have their fun and in 5-10 minutes you know that we’ll be circling around to see what went right/wrong and how we can make sure that you’re more involved in the next round. We want to make sure that everyone is involved, but that we also keep the fun going! This is mostly going to be a fun experiment for everyone to participate in. We are constantly looking for new ways to keep everyone included instead of isolated and our goal is to make sure that everyone is as comfortable and happy as possible.
With all of that said: For the very first game, we are going to do a sign-up for our first players. The very first game we will be playing is Trivia Murder Party 2, so brush up on your trivia and mini-game skills because it's going to be a wild ride! The game takes a maximum of 8 players, but up to 10,000 spectators. If you don't get in on the very first round of the game, we will rotate out after the first game is finished. However, to make it easier, we ask that if you want to participate in the first round of gaming, you sign up below!
