The fact that he hadn’t made his appearance yet didn’t sit too well with him. Emilios knew that he wasn’t making the best impression on those who were depending on him to act in the King’s stead. He wanted to be out there, but he felt it was more important to wait for his extended family to arrive. The united front was important, no-- it was critical. He was the head of the family now, and he was determined to set that example.
They would walk in together.
He was relieved when Xene was quickly behind the last men, breezing into the room with a smile on her face. Her arm looped through his, and he was quick to bring her hand up to her mouth for a quick kiss before she pulled back to give him a once over. He looked at his outfit once more, suddenly unsure of what he’d chosen. But she was quick to adjust him to appear more proper and gave her approval. Emilios laughed, “Let’s hope that we impress. Lord knows that none of us are really ready for this.” And he was certain that every single one of those men were aware of how little the rulers knew.
“Good, I know they won’t wait much longer.”
It was then that Theo walked in, a vision in gold and jewels. The air that she carried was that of a Queen, but hadn’t she always been that way? Even when they were just sneaking around alone, he had always been in awe of how gracefully she carried herself. She deserved the crown she wore today, and he knew that he would never be good enough for her. Even now, he could never fully deserve her. But still, that didn’t change the racing of his heart as she appeared.
He bowed to her, then leaned in to press a brotherly kiss to her cheek. “Your Majesty.” There was a twinkle in his eye, but it was impossible to know exactly what was meant behind it. There was a little concern over her delay, but it was something that he would address later. “Perhaps we can speak to your uncle about providing some funding for that.” It would have to have something to do with the war for it to be paid for now, but perhaps he would see a need to fix the streets of the capitol.
Even with Xene on his arm, Emilios held out the other to her. “Would you permit me to escort you as well? Perhaps we may show a united Mikaelides house for the others to know exactly where we stand?” It wasn’t just that he wanted to be close to her. He wanted the correct image, to set the standard of their new places. The old guard would make their judgments of the new ones, but he was certain that this would at least cause them to take note.

With the Queen joining them, Xene took the moment to bow properly to her cousin. It was only polite and she found that she truly liked Theodora, so why not show her the respect that she deserved. Barring that, it was hard not to be affectionate toward a woman of such a sweet and almost tender demeanor with nearly everyone she came into contact with. It made the princess wish that she had aimed to be better friends with the woman long before she and Achilleas married. "We do not wait for royalty. Royalty waits for us," the princess murmured in a way that told the queen that she was not late.
The princess watched Emilios offer Theodora his other arm and she found herself nodding at his words. It was important for them to appear as a united front. To be anything other would be a signal of their weakness as a family. Of which they could not be when the Kingdom and the government needed them the most. "That is a fantastic idea, and better for us as well if we appear that we will not cow to demands today," Xene said quietly, dipping her head at her cousin.
With the three of them united, linked arm in arm, they started fully down the stairs and into the gardens. Xene took graceful steps, keeping pace with her two other companions to ensure that they did, in fact, step into the meeting as a united group. As they reached the bottom and trailed further into the gardens, the princess purposely kept her gaze off the object of her affections, smiling peacefully at the other men who had gathered there. This time, it was her that introduced them all to the group, using Theodora's words as her own. "I hope that we have not kept all of you waiting too long, my lords," she said delicately, letting go of Emilios' arm so that he might break free and settle wherever he wished for the time being.
For now, the princess would listen, only interjecting when she thought it necessary for her voice to be heard. She was knowledgeable of war and the military, but she would not claim to be a master. However, if they were all called here, that meant that all of their voices were important in this moment.

Perhaps Theodora’s eyes closed for a moment too long when Emilios leaned in to press his lips to her cheek, his all too familiar scent dizzying in his proximity. Maybe she even leaned into the touch a little, only just managing to restrain herself from turning her head and instead meeting his lips with her own. When he stepped back, she felt his absence with a keen mixture of relief and disappointment alike, firmly reminding herself that now was not the time to get caught up in girlish fantasy. No matter her feelings for the man at her side, this was a meeting for the well-being of the kingdom, and she could not allow herself to be distracted.
Xene was a welcome diversion as she greeted her, the queen inclining her head with a smile when the princess dropped into a polite curtsy. Her bolstering reassurance of not waiting on royalty, but rather royalty waiting for others had Theo’s smile deepening, her shoulders relaxing a fraction. The Queen was nervous enough on her own, and she was immeasurably grateful for Xene’s calming presence. Truly, the woman was a delight, and she regretted that she had not known her better before her marriage. She meant to remedy that as soon as things calmed down further; gods knew she needed other strong, like-minded women around her with the chaos in which Taengea seemed constantly embroiled.
She only hesitated for half a second when Emilios offered his other arm to her, gently clasping his elbow and drawing in closer. He was right; it was good for them to appear as a united front, particularly with all the tumult in the Mikaelidas House of late. Though she was Leventi born, she was a lioness now, and she meant to do her new house proud. Even such small gestures as walking into the meeting arm-in-arm went a far way in the delicate dance of kingdom politics. Whatever she could do to support her new family, she would.
“Let’s go meet them, then,” she murmured as the trio stepped forward, calming her racing heart and doing her very best to ignore the stir of her blood at the touch of her former lover. She could not let her face give anything away, particularly not in this meeting with so many of the powerful men of the kingdom in attendance. The last thing she needed was a vicious rumor circulating about her and the crown prince. Even if there was far too much truth to that rumor. Because there was far too much truth to that rumor.
The queen paused for a moment when they reached their destination, trying not to make a show of the deep breath she took. These are men you’ve known all your life, she reminded herself as she pasted a gracious smile on her face, one she was proud did not even tremble. And you are queen now. Do not let them intimidate you.
“My lords,” she added her voice to her cousin’s, relinquishing the prince’s arm to walk toward the blessedly open seat next to her father. Kissing his cheek, she gently squeezed his shoulder before turning to nod to each of the other men in turn. “Uncle,” she smiled as she nodded to Fotios, the inclination of her head perhaps a touch deeper than the ones she gave the others. “Lord Konstanos. Lord Gavriil. Lord Nikolias. Even if you have waited, at least it’s a lovely day for it, yes?”
Taking her seat, her smile deepened a little at the reassuring pat Georgios gave her knee. “So, let us not wait any longer, then. Please, my lords, proceed.” Falling quiet as she looked toward Emilios, her gaze sparkled with a silent encouragement, as he was the one with stewardship of the kingdom, whether she was queen or not. It was his time to lead, to speak to those present and listen to what more could be done. Whether he doubted himself or not, she knew what he was capable of. There was not a doubt in her mind that he could fill the absent king’s shoes and do so admirably well. It was those around them that needed the convincing.
