The sun was setting, allowing some semblance of freshness to the streets of Alexandria. People walked home, but some business remained open – mostly taverns and opium dens. But at this hour, it was the time where a particular kind of district began to be busier…
Hesiodos was not a stranger to the red light districts in any city of kingdom. He was actually proud to have been to them at least once, and he was quite clear on what he wanted, and what he could give in return.
Tonight, though? It was different; not in what he wanted, but in what he was expected to give. Money would be part of it, but there was something else he possessed that was perhaps more valuable: secrets. Being a bard, he could go everywhere, and knew a lot about everyone, and many people could pay a lot for it, and while he was no interested in money, he was interested in something else…
So he entered the establishment and smirked. He loved the fresh smell of brothel…

This evening was much like any other for Deshra. During the day, the brothel saw very little activity. Only the occasional man was willing to visit such an establishment during the day. But now that the sun was going down, and the hot Egyptian air was cooling from the heat of the day, the activity in the brothel was finally beginning to increase.
The activity in the main room of the brothel was fairly quiet, with the girls trying to provide a pleasant atmosphere for the clients who were still attempting to pick out who they wished to bed. The girls were all in various states of dress, many draped loosely in the sheer fabrics that were so popular in Egypt. A few trays of dates and small pieces of spiced flatbreads were set out around the room, providing light snacks for anyone looking to hire companionship for the night. Music was provided by the girls themselves.
Deshra was playing her small harp with some moderate ability, accompanying another woman who was singing in a thin voice, and dancing seductively. Deshra was dressed in a sheer length of undyed linen, which had been wrapped around her waist then draped loosely over her shoulder, to keep the skirt from sliding down, only barely covering her chest. Her hair had been oiled to a sheen, and framed Deshra’s face, in a halo of deep red.
As the man entered the brothel, he was immediately greeted by one of the older women, who asked for his preferences, and offered refreshments, attempting to match the man to a woman. Deshra glanced up for a moment to look at the blond-haired, blue-eyed. He was no Egyptian, probably a Greek. They were common enough in the port of Alexandria that Deshra wasn’t overly surprised to see the man. Deshra had turned back to her own music only to look up a few moments later to find that the Greek man had been led over towards hers. She glanced down again, politely averting her gaze, waiting for the man to address her first.

Hesiodos loved brothels, no matter where he was. The snacks, the drinks, the music, and what was about to come made him giddy, though he was there for another reason entirely. One of the older women came to him and asked for his preference, and he talked about someone rather specifically. The woman looked around, then behind him to make sure he wasn’t being followed, and she directed him towards Deshra.
She was gorgeous, he thought. Delightful olive skin and curly, exotic red hair, and her clothes just accentuated her figure. And she was also playing music? It was her kind of woman, he concluded. Hesiodos took a date from a nearby tray, and began to munch on it, and when asked if he wanted something else, he requested a cup of wine. After that, he took a moment to enjoy the melody, closing his eyes, until it stopped. He opened them and nodded at the woman.
“Deshra, correct?”, he approached, at a distance that was accustomed for clients of a brothel with the girl they wanted, “You’re exactly the woman I’m looking for”, his tone was an odd mix of seductive and one that was hiding something, “Your music is delightful, by the way. I can see Apollo’s influence even in this place…”

It wasn’t unusual to find herself with one of the first customers of the evening. She was popular with the clientele and that was something that she was proud of. It wasn’t even a surprise when the man was led over to her. What was a surprise was that he knew her name. She only broke form momentarily, her eyes flicking up to his for a moment, seeking any recognition of his face, but she had none. Instead, she hummed an acknowledgment of his inquiry. “Oh, am I?” She smiled up at him putting a hand on his shoulder and moving closer. “And why would that be?” On one hand, Deshra was just being flirtatious, but on the other, she could never hear enough about herself.
The man did not disappoint, complimenting her music as well. Her lips curled up into a smile. Perhaps her reputation had preceded her enough that there were men willing to come all the way from Greece to ask for her by name. It was a nice thought that stroked Deshra’s ego. On the outside, she appeared much less confident. Deshra glanced down. “Oh, I’m not really that good. I just play a little.” That was also far from true. Deshra had taken the time to practice and hone her skill at the harp. It was a skill that could make her invaluable at a higher class establishment where men expected entertainment along with a good time. It was thinking like this that had found her at higher and higher-class brothels as she developed her talents.
Desha slid her hand down this man’s arm and took his hand starting to lead him deeper into the building without a word. It didn’t need any. This was an action that could only have one implication. Perhaps the man would explain how he ended up here once they had some privacy.

Hesiodos smiled slightly when he was touched. He was a very physical person, and enjoyed being touched, even more if he was being flirted with, “Yes, you are”, he confirmed, with a tone that suggested that while he would rather be in another place, they were in a good way there, “Mm… many reasons. Principally, because I’ve been told your beauty is beyond compare, and that your skills are even better… I can confirm the first statement”, he loved the game of flattery, honeying his words for people, even if they didn’t need to hear them. Seduction was a clever and delightful game in which neither party truly lost.
“Oh, but I greatly enjoyed your music”, he complimented again, “It was a most welcome gift I received as soon as I entered, and I was immediately drawn to it”, he was being honest, although exaggerating it a bit. His skilled musical ear knew well she was not an expert in the harp – he knew he was a better musician, and wouldn’t have minded giving her some classes. But everything in due time, he decided.
He didn’t resist once she led him to the deeper part of the brothel. He got excited out of instinct, with his loins stirring. He had other plans, though, but nothing said that he couldn’t have his favorite kind of fun later... once they stopped, and they both were completely sure that no one was listening, he told her, “As much as I enjoy complimenting you, I don’t want to waste your time… you’re interested in secrets, correct?”

Deshra couldn’t help but smile as she was complimented yet again by the Greek man. He certainly had a way with words. She would have to figure out where this man had come from, so she could figure out if she could get him to come back. That is, if he turned out to be as generous with his money as he was with his flattery. While kind words might be a nice benefit of the job, they certainly weren’t the goal.
When they reached her room, she sat him on the bed while she lit clay lamps around the room. They bathed the room in a flickering light. The last rays of the day’s sun filtered through the thin fabric that draped over the window. Deshra turned back to him with a flirtatious smirk, and approached him slowly, letting her top start to slide slowly down her shoulder. However, when he spoke, she was brought up short.
What did this man want with secrets? She knew that Tassos had some dealings in secrets, and they had come to some mutual agreements about sharing the information that she collected. Still, this man was not familiar to her, and she had no desire to find herself, or Tassos for that matter, in trouble for knowing things that they weren’t supposed to know, or telling them to people that weren’t supposed to know them. It was just a moment’s pause while Deshra tried to figure out how to deal with it, but she had let down her guard for just a second too long, and she knew it.
Deshra immediately tried to smooth it over in the only way she knew how, seduction. “I could be into secrets if you are.” Deshra grinned at him, running her hand across his shoulders sensually. “Why don’t you tell me what your secret desires are? I’ll do what I can to make them come true.” What man couldn’t resist that? Maybe he’d say something that would help give her some kind of hint as to where he was from and if she could trust him. Not that she really believed in trusting anyone. It was too risky a prospect for someone in her position.

It was often that Hesiodos got a beautiful woman in bed, and yet, the sight always got him excited. It was a feeling he would never get tired of. The light of the room complimented Deshra’s skin beautifully, and he found himself desiring as her clothes fell slowly… but when she stopped, he regretted speaking.
But the way she became flirty again made him regain his confidence. He licked his lips, “I’m into a lot of things, my dear…”, he said smoothly, with his hand reaching out and caressing her hips, “Mmm, my secret desires? Why, I never make my desires secret. That would make me easy to use… not that I mind being used”, he chuckled, stepping a bit closer to her, “Some good wine… mirth and merriment… beautiful music… and you…”, Hesiodos inched closer to softly kiss her bare neck.
Once he got back, he realized what he was doing… once again, he was letting his libido get the better of him. He was here for a reason, and he was once again getting distracted. But what a wonderful distraction… he decided that he was willing to let this happen if she was, but he needed to try something first. “Mmm… Tassos was right about you. I will be always grateful for recommending me…”, he said with a husky tone, secretly hoping that he was wrong, and what he wanted to happen, would happen.

Aside from the fact that this man seemed to know her interest in secrets, Deshra had expected that this might be a relatively normal evening. Her redirect had had the desired effect, at least for a moment. She closed her eyes and smiled as he kissed her neck, but then he pulled away again, mentioning that Tassos had sent him. That meant that she could no longer ignore his request for secrets.
The fact that he could name Tassos in conjunction with his desire for secrets, it meant that he could be trusted. Or at least it meant that Tassos thought he could be trusted. Deshra still wasn’t sure how much she trusted Tassos’s judgment, but it wouldn’t do any good to have it get back to him that she had refused the request from someone that he trusted.
At the mention of Tassos’s name, Deshra’s demeanor changed. She sat back on the bed leaning away from him, clearly no longer attempting to seduce the man. “Oh, so it’s those kinds of secrets you’re interested in,” she asked, her eyebrows raising. “Well perhaps we can still explore your not so secret desires later,” she added with a smirk. Of course, that would come with its own price. Deshra had never understood the people who said to never mix business with pleasure, of course, in her profession the two went more or less hand in hand.
“So are you interested in buying or selling? Or a little bit of both? Perhaps an information exchange?” The man hadn’t explained his interest in her knowledge. She was more than willing to share secrets for the correct price or to listen to any information people wanted to tell her. It wasn’t often people approached her so directly, but she was intrigued by the request.

Hesiodos would have lied if he said that he wasn’t disappointed by Deshra’s change in disposition. In fact, he made it know by a long sight once she got away from him and sat on his bed… such as he was enjoying this business, he thought. But at least she kept her options open… that softened the blow, at least.
“Indeed, though now I’m reconsidering what I’m looking for now”, he said with a sardonic tone. The ardor on his loins refused to leave, much to his frustration, “Oh, and I count on that… the night is young, after all”, it wouldn’t be the first time Hesiodos ended doing an exchange and ended with an extra tip. Sensuous things seemed to go after him rather quickly, he realized over the years.
He decided to sit down next to Deshra, mostly to hide the arousal between his legs, though at this point it was fairly obvious than it was there, “I’m interested in buying and selling, my dear. I came to know some information that may or may not seem interesting to you… you’ll be the one to decide, and the one to see if it’s worth the price”, he said with the tone he used to discuss payments for a gig – from something as innocent as playing music on a wedding, to something a bit less innocuous as stabbing someone on an alley.
He resumed, “I came to learn the names of several people of interest, mainly those working with smuggling, and corrupt officers of the guard. Now, I admit than that may be easy to come information, so I thought I’ll start with that”, he said with a considering tone; even then it was clear that he was aroused by the beauty before him, “I also learned something that might be more valuable, though… the secret entrance to some important places”, he left it at that, not saying anything else, pondering what she would say instead.
