A smile hovered on her lips at the expression on his face as she took a moment to relish the wordplay. She might not have Selene or Theo’s trademark beauty but she had most definitely inherited the Leventi brains and penchant for making a game of words. With a shrug from him, he finally offered, ‘I think, in our new spirit of frankness, Lady Evangelina, that you know the answer to that already. I prefer things to have some order, it’s true.’
Her smile only widened, cheeky dimples appearing along with a teasing glint in the earthy tones of her eyes. There wasn’t any doubt in her mind he craved order. Catching the plumpest part of her bottom lip between her teeth, she looked downward, diverting her gaze.
“Ah, so you’re on to my little game of moving your stuff around…” She didn’t bother blushing at being caught, he was far too observant not to have noticed. It was only how quickly had he noticed and he’d noticed the instant she’d done it yesterday. Had she only moved things around once, he might have overlooked it but it had become a highlight of her visit to him. Darting a glance at him, it was her turn to offer a small shrug along with a grin, “What can I say… I like touching things.” It was flirtatious and she knew without a doubt it’d cause his ass cheeks to pucker at her frankness, even if she was just teasing him.
‘It is true that your House brings to mind certain traits..but I for one can say I have been summarily disavowed of the notion that you are at all the same.’
The petite brunette didn’t take offense to what he said. It was true and she could accept truths no matter how hard they were to swallow. And it did please her to some degree that he was beginning to see the light… they were definitely not all little cutouts of whatever this image was that people seemed to cast upon them.
“It’s no different than if people were to cast you and Emilios and Stephanos all the same pot and say that what one of you were like all of you were like… And how true would that be?” Tilting her head she gave him another look from under the sweeping thick lashes as her head tilted down. “I am not saying this to pinpoint it onto you. You are hardly the only person to ever be surprised that we are each individual and just because you’ve met one of us… that we are all the same lot of girls.” She offered him another smile to ease some guilt, “Most of the time people don’t know whose daughter I am. You wouldn’t believe how many times I get asked how my sisters are doing.” She laughed, “I am afraid my brother does not find it all that funny when I am asked that and I turn to look at him and ask him how he is doing, but he rebounds quite well and usually finds some mischief to cause that poor person.”
It seemed to be sinking into Achilleas mind just how many girls there were in her family. ‘Nine is a lot.’ He said after a moment, ‘I just thought to ask because I would not want our acquaintance being the cause of any bother. I wouldn’t want anything to be misconstrued or to make things uncomfortable.’ Her head came up and she pinned him with another amused look, hadn’t she said that yesterday when he’d spoken of writing her letters? Blinking, she let out a soft sigh and nodded her head, “There isn’t anything to misconstrue. Theo has no reason to believe otherwise.” She gave a small half-hearted shrug, “I am simply little Evie. I spend too much time with the horses, my gowns are always just a touch too long, and it’s very possible if there is a crash to be heard that it’s me. Theo can stop a man on the streets with just a glance, and she knows it. As long as you give her all the attention she needs, she would probably never even notice our friendship.”
Feeling like she might have said too much, her lips tightened and she reached for her wine glass to occupy her hands. Grasping it she brought it up to her lips to prevent her from saying anything else on that matter. He was marrying Theo, he’d laid claim to knowing and loving her… he knew who she was. Taking a sip, the watery wine lingered on her tongue before she swallowed slowly. Her gaze dropping into the glass.
His gaze was on her but she avoided it for the favor of the contents in her glass. After a moment, ‘I don’t know that I will get the chance to speak with her before the wedding. I’d appreciate it if we could continue to keep the… Griffen subject to yourself until I can talk to Theodora myself.’ That was enough for her to hop off the desk, taking her wine glass with her as she moved abruptly to the window without looking back. Hadn’t she already told him it wasn’t her secret to tell? Taking a deep breath, she let it out slowly, staring out the window, “Of course. But as I told you yesterday… That’s your secret to tell, not mine.” Glancing over her shoulder at him, she offered a faint half-hearted smile, “Just don’t wait too long to tell Theo, she needs to know.”

‘What can I say… I like touching things’ The Prince gave a snort, not quite rolling his eyes, but aware enough that she was attempting to fluster him again. If he was being honest, he was surprised that she had such a read on him already, to have honed in on the little idiosyncrasies that he thought he kept better hidden. But then Achilleas had never been very good at hiding things.
“You know, its rude to touch people’s things without asking” he replied, with a very precise arch of one brow, refusing to be ruffled. He might have drawn the line at discussing certain things with her, but he was not some blushing maid to be made uncomfortable so easily. Gods, he had spent enough time with Stephanos and Emilios to have developed a thicker skin than that. But that did not change the fact that Evangelina was the cousin of his betrothed, and therefore there were lines drawn that would have him guard his words around her, and that should have her conscious of her own, though he was beginning to doubt that the longer he spent in her company.
And he accepted the gentle correction in what must be an ongoing frustration for those of her family, giving a shake of his head in response to the idea of his being confused with either his cousin or his brother. For whilst he and Emilios shared more than a passing physical resemblance, they were as different as day and night in every other way. Emilios and Stephanos shared more in common, but even so, it made her point well, there was no reason anyone should be surprised at their differences.
“Fair” he shrugged, feeling secretly relieved he had never made such an obvious misstep. He was familiar enough with Lord Georgios’ daughters, and to a lesser extent Lord Fotios’ too, but had marked his own ignorance well enough all those years ago in not recognising Evangelina. Not a mistake he was likely to make again. “How old is your brother now? He is a little outnumbered in your family..he has my sympathies in that” Achilleas notionally had sisters of his own, though there was an inevitable distance because of the age difference, and a more deliberate distance because of who their mother was that meant they were not at all close. Even the very brief insight he had been given into the Leventi family had him a little apprehensive as to being suddenly in possession of three sisters in law, and another raft of cousins. Retreating to Euttica was appealing for more reasons than one.
The Lord sighed, stretched his long legs out before him as he raised that little niggling worry with the woman before him. It was all quite unprecedented, the extent in which Evangelina had so quickly found herself in his confidence, and now sat here with him, unaccompanied, in his study. Perhaps easier for him to understand why Theodora might find such a thing unacceptable compared to a letter, for example.
Achilleas gave an uncomfortable shrug, he could see well enough her amusement that he had so suddenly changed his tune, but he found himself in need of the reassurance that this would not be a thing to return to haunt him. And he tried to find it in the answer Evangelina gave, thinking it was not the first time she had mentioned Theodora’s need for attention. There was certainly an edge of something….an edge to her words, and the lord pressed his lips together, looked pensive as Evie took a sip of wine and let a telling silence say more than she had.
Feeling a little awkward and not wanting to press a subject that had brought them to that point, Achilleas rounded off with a request, following Evangelina with his eyes as she walked past him to the window.
“Yes I know. It is just not the same kind of secret we thought it might have been yesterday, so I didn’t know if you would afford it the same courtesy.” He realises how that sounded and corrected himself ‘ That is, I would not necessarily expect you to protect Condos at all.” But then it sounded like he would have expected her to protect him and that wasn’t right either. Achilleas frowned. “It’s not important. It’s just close to the wedding and I don’t want to worry her with something that has little relevance to her.”
He looked at her questioningly, because she seemed to have lost some of her sparkle in the preceding moments and he found that he missed it. “I wouldn’t usually keep anything from her, I hope you know?”

He looked at her questioningly, because she seemed to have lost some of her sparkle in the preceding moments and he found that he missed it. “I wouldn’t usually keep anything from her, I hope you know?”
There was a reason the tiny brunette got along so well with her cousin Agape. They both shared a very similar wicked sort of sense of humor. The newly crowned Prince gave an amused snort at her daring choice of words. The little minx was definitely trying to fluster him again. She had found pushing his buttons to be one of her new favorite past times.
His reply was met with a full, throaty laugh. The corners of her eyes crinkling at her merriment and laughter.
“Only if you truly didn’t want them touched,” She archly tossed back at him, “And you wanted them touched.” Her lip curled impishly and she gave a flick of her head sending a couple of rebellious strands of chestnut hair bouncing before she continued teasingly, “You just didn’t know it.” Her grin grew, “You’ll never admit that, but we both know it’s true.”
Darting a pointed glance over to his shelf, “That vase would be much better at eye level… it’s far too pretty to never be noticed wasted there on the lower shelf.”
The conversation seemed to drift away from the teasing and more towards the unveiling of opinions… of course mostly hers. There wasn’t much of a need for him to feel too embarrassed. It was a common mistake and no one was perfect after all. She shrugged it away. Evie had found a long time ago that people would believe what they wanted. The idea of truths was a rather grey area in her mind. Truths could contradict if seen through different eyes. It was like ten people could read the same scroll and take away at least twelve different meanings to the words… despite the words never altering. Now, which of those ten people had read it correctly? Ask each of them and they could all explain the truths as they saw them and they’d each believe their truth was the right truth.
Her mind had drifted into thoughts of truths and untruths and she wasn’t even entirely sure now how that had happened. She met his gaze again as he spoke. ‘Yes I know. It is just not the same kind of secret we thought it might have been yesterday, so I didn’t know if you would afford it the same courtesy.’ His words brought her eyebrows up a fraction and he tried to correct himself, ‘That is, I would not necessarily expect you to protect Condos at all.’ Her eyebrows continued upwards and her head tilted just a fraction at him. ‘It’s not important. It’s just close to the wedding and I don’t want to worry her with something that has little relevance to her.’
Evangelina’s dark gaze held onto him for a few long seconds as if she was about to maybe give him a few more of her choice opinions but finally she just simply replied, “Ahhh.” She looked out the window again and caught her bottom lip with her teeth, “I still stand firmly by that it isn’t my secret to tell.” Dragging her eyes back to him, she pinned him with a bland look, “Whatever secrets you choose to keep from her, or her from you, it’s neither my job or my place to be the go-between. If you want her to know, you’re a big enough boy to tell him yourself.”
‘I wouldn’t usually keep anything from her, I hope you know?’
She smiled tenderly then and drew her eyes back out the window, “I didn’t think you would.” Over her shoulder she glanced back at him gauging his reaction, “You are too earnest to keep things, I think, from those you care about. It’s an admirable trait.” Her tone might have been just a touch contradictory to her words though.

He looked doubtfully at her, though whether it was at what she suggested or her proclamation that he would never admit it even if it were true, wasn’t clear. And as his gaze tracked her over to the bookcase that had so caught her attention, Achilleas frowned a little. It was not as if he had some particular vision, some creative execution that he wished to see brought to life. He didn’t know what looked good where. That wasn’t the point. It was just that things went where they went and it irritated him to find them out of place. And what irritated him more was that she had so quickly picked up on the fact and it was now taking more effort than he would like to downplay it.
“Move it if you want then” he said lightly of the vase. Because he knew he could shift it back when she had gone but it at least would make him appear less of a madman. He realised his eyes were roaming the bookcase as if to identify anything else that had shifted, and he made himself look away, deliberately returning his gaze to the woman before him.
He managed to tangle himself up in trying to explain his rationale to her when it came to keeping secrets, and his assurance that he would not usually do such a thing seemed necessary somehow. Perhaps it was own guilty conscience about the number of whispered conversations he’d been involved in lately, or maybe he just felt the need to express his loyalty to her cousin, because actually, it felt a little odd now to be talking about Theodora with Evangelina.
The Prince paused at her response, not sure what to make of the smile, of the words that should be complementary but sounded as if perhaps they were not. And he felt called out, as if she somehow thought it a fault of his. Too earnest It was too close to things he heard from his father for it not to bother him, and Achilleas pressed her, pushed at the aggravation.
“Is it? You don’t sound certain. And anyway, it is more the fact that I am a terrible liar than anything else”
At least, with some people. He thought he could tell a passable untruth to the public, if he needed to. He didn't like it, but it was a necessary part of political life and one that he’d had to swallow a long time ago. And to those he didn’t know, again, it was easier. But - as Evangelina had already accused him off - he gave too much away sometimes, and that meant trying to deceive those close to him was a stressful endeavour. Admirable or not, it was an unfortunate trait to be is possession of at the current moment in time, and Achilleas was torn between wanting to avoid his father all together to avoid the man’s suspicion, and wanting to regain his trust so he might be able to keep closer eyes on what the King’s plan’s were. Though the main requirement of him just seemed to be to get this wedding done with. He was hopeful that after the ceremony his father might have a little more time for him, but he would have to wait and see.
“But I have no intention of lying to your cousin, anyway” he finished. “And when the time is right I’ll let her know of Condos’ poor idea of humour, or whatever this whole mess was. And when it comes to addressing the problem, I hope you won't mind if I do call upon your knowledge.” He stood and moved over toward the shelf that stood between them, furrowed his brow as he looked over the contents, as if he were searching something out, and after a moment, his large hand closed around a scroll that he presented to Evangelina.
“Perhaps you might try this one. It is one that I have found useful” And then he held up his palm toward her “Don’t think about returning it. Consider it a thank you for all your help with the boy.”

Evangelina knew this trick. He offered to let her move it but as soon as she was gone and he was certain she wouldn’t pop back in, he’d move it back exactly where he’d had it. Her lips curled up on one end and as she let her gaze flicker over his features impishly, “How about you move it?” She hadn’t missed the way his gaze lingered over his shelf as if he was cataloging every item he owned. “And while you are over there you can check to make sure I haven’t had any more sticky fingers, your highness.”
There wasn’t any malice in her tone, perhaps a bit of amusement, but nothing catty in her tone. Generally speaking, she wasn’t so easy to rile. There were certain scenarios, certain people, and certain triggers of course that could flip her switch from good-natured to something more fitting of a one-eyed ally cat, but it was that way with everyone, wasn’t it?
As the conversation drifted very closely to something that felt like a combination of a plea and a bribe to keep her silence. She let him tangle himself up with his words and just as quietly let him untangle himself. He reminded her a bit of a colt that was learning to lead by standing on his line. If he’d just move his foot a little his head would be free, but instead, he was fighting against his own weight trying to free his little head. She looked out the window again with a half-smile. Achilleas would learn too.
‘Is it? You don’t sound certain. And anyway, it is more the fact that I am a terrible liar than anything else.’ He pushed against her words just enough to bring her gaze back on him for a long moment before she answered.
“Too earnest…” She mulled over the words as if she’d not been the one to say it a few moments earlier then she turned her back to the window and leaned her small, feminine body against the frame. “It’s admirable to me,” She offered after her moment, her arms crossing her chest. “But I am afraid it is a bit of a double-edged sword. It isn’t easy to be earnest and be the keeper of secrets… from anyone. Which is also probably why you are a terrible liar…” Tilting her head, she studied him in the same way she might a horse who was presenting a problem to her. “Just a thought to keep in mind, your highness, you can please a few people all of the time or all of the people some of the time but you can’t please all of the people all of the time.” So find out who matters the most to you and please them...
‘But I have no intention of lying to your cousin, anyway. And when the time is right I’ll let her know of Condos’ poor idea of humor, or whatever this whole mess was. And when it comes to addressing the problem, I hope you won't mind if I do call upon your knowledge.’
He stood with an unexpected grace for a man of his size and moved to the shelf. Procuring a scroll, he walked the few feet to her and offered it out. ‘Perhaps you might try this one. It is one that I have found useful.’ Hesitantly, she took it and opened it just enough to scan what it was about as he spoke again, ‘Don’t think about returning it. Consider it a thank you for all your help with the boy.’
She rolled the scroll back up and looked up at him, “Thank you, your highness.” It would appear that he was dismissing her. Straightening up, the pint-sized chestnut-haired girl prepared to leave, “Although, it’s unnecessary. I’d have helped you simply to help you… and him. If you happen to hear of any news of him please, send word to me.”

If you happen to hear of any news of him please, send word to me.”
“But I’m not the one who has a problem with it where it is now, am I?” Achilleas countered, though he at least had the grace to look a little abashed at having been caught in his cataloguing on all the items that should be there. “ Can you blame me?” he offered lightly, with a shrug. “ And here was me thinking that it was Fen i would have to watch, when all along you were the criminal mastermind”
He was still bemused at the fact that she had managed to make off with one of his scrolls unnoticed, and much as he would have liked to have put it down to his being inordinately distracted, he had a sneaking suspicion that Evangelina boasted some skill too. Another interesting facet to the woman.
And she was astute too, though he might have wished otherwise when she described a choice that he would rather not have to make. Trying to keep everyone happy was a balancing act he had been practicing for years, and it was only recently that he seemed to be falling short. Something would have to give, eventually. Perhaps it already had, in his choice of protecting Stephanos over following his father’s edicts. “ So I am coming to see” he said on a sigh, scrubbing a hand over his face again and for a second wearing the weariness that he felt after the past weeks.
He did not want to think on it now though, and so he moved, made the offering of the scroll towards Evangelina and then spoke up to explain. “I don’t mean to suggest that you wouldn’t have. But I would not usually have dragged a near stranger into the middle of something like this. Take it and let me feel a little better. Plus..you will have an excuse to come back then. If you wanted to, ever.” He blinked as if he’d surprised himself with those words, and hastily went on to add “Krystos gave the boy enough to see him out of such straits. But he seemed to warm to you. I’m sure I could find out where he resides if you wanted to see him again”.
Another thing he could offer in some way of thanks for Evangelina’s having gone so far out of her way to help him with what could have been a very embarrassing situation. “Just send word if you do. And if not, then I suppose I will see you at the wedding?”
Achilleas looked for a moment as if he might be about to lean down and drop a kiss upon her cheek, but then he appeared to reconsider and instead took her hand within his own for a moment, inclined his head. “My thanks again, Lady Evangelina, for your understanding and candour these past days”.

Evangelina gave him a look. Her head tilted slightly as her sharp eyes bore into him as she arched questioning eyebrows at him in response to his words. The look might have been light but it was silently doubting his words. He might not have had a problem with where the vase had been but now that it was brought to his attention he’d notice it unfailingly.
“Fine. Then leave it there,” She said, giving him a small shrug of her shoulders. It was a bit like flicking a bull on the nose and knowing the small insignificant prod would be enough to see results. Her lips quirked into a knowing smile at the words ‘criminal mastermind’. “Ah!” Evie feigned a gasp, her dark eyes full of teasing mirth as she continued, “You’ve discovered my secret. I’ll have to run away now and change my name, maybe even the color of my hair. I hear there are ways for women to do such things…” Her lip curled wickedly, “I hear blondes have quite a lot of fun.”
The moments of reprobative teasing disappear as she offered advice on pleasing people. She knew it wasn’t an easy pill to swallow, it was one she was still struggling with herself. Her dark eyes softened, she seemed to constantly be disappointing someone. Whether it was her parents, or her brother, or her uncle…. And too often it was her self that she was disappointing. There was Gavriil now too, he’d sort of suddenly become someone she wanted to please. Wanted to run to share her problems with and the fear lingered there that she would never find a way to make him smile thinking about her the way he smiled about his first wife. What if she was never important to him?
Pushing herself back to reality, she offered Achilleas another one of her sad but knowing smiles. She wanted to reach out and touch his arm and let him know that she knew what it felt like to be under the scrutiny of so many and to be failing. She wanted to offer some form of comfort but there really wasn’t anything she could say at that moment that she’d not already told him in one manner or another.
‘I don’t mean to suggest that you wouldn’t have. But I would not usually have dragged a near stranger into the middle of something like this. Take it and let me feel a little better. Plus..you will have an excuse to come back then. If you wanted to, ever.’
His last words warmed her from the inside out. The petitely built Leventi struggled with making friends of her own class. The women of her class saw her as competition or a walking disaster, and the men were too busy looking at the other women to really see her. Those that did hadn’t proved to be the most steadfast of friends or had ended up incapable of dealing with her rather brazen tongue and ready truths.
Tilting her head up, her smile lit up her features, “I would like that. Perhaps when things have settled down a bit more and you return from Euttica we can go riding. It’d be nice I am sure to get away from here for a little while upon your return visits.” Tapping him softly on the chest with wooden ends of the scroll, “Please call upon me if you need a trustworthy friend. I don’t have many but I would be quite pleased if you considered me one. I don’t imagine we’ll have much of a chance to see one another again until after the wedding. Should the opportunity not arise for me to off my congratulations on your wedding and my hopes for many happy years and handsome sons for the two of you.”
At the mention of Krysto and Fin, her smile softened tenderly, “Please, if you find out where he is residing send word. I am thinking of offering the child a position… not sure really what he’s suited for but I think he could be a boy of many talents if given the opportunity.”
He looked down and for a moment she thought he might have been about to place a chaste kiss on her cheek. Instead, he took her much smaller hand into his, ‘My thanks again, Lady Evangelina, for your understanding and candor these past days.’ She smiled again at him and gave his hand a squeeze, “Don’t apologize. We are friends now and that is what friends do for one another.” Lingering another moment, she gave him a wink and pulled away. “But I’ll be out of your hair now… I am sure there is some urgent, pressing matter for you to attend. I hear flowers may or may not be on the agenda today. May the Gods be kind to you, your highness.”
With a final glance, she strolled out the door and saw herself out and back to Than and the horses. She had her own final arrangements to see to and the last fitting for her suggestive lavender gown. Yes, she fully intended to turn a head or two at Achilleas' wedding…
