The sun had started it’s descent and cast caramel hues across the early evening sky. This cove was one of the quietest places along this stretch of the beach. Maybe that’s what made this fun instead of simply embarrassing. Evangelina bit her bottom lip and fought back a giggle. Refusing to think about it another second longer, her fingers started unclipping the clasps that held the midnight red chiton in place. Her fingers fumbled but they managed to get the dress off in one piece.
It dropped and instinctively her hands tried to cover all of her parts. It was an impossible job. Nudging the shoes that she’d already discarded out of the way, she peered around the large rock next to the entrance of the cave as she double-checked that she was most definitely alone. As far as the eye could see it was deserted.
Fighting a grin as she took off across the sandy beach to the safety of the water. Diving into it, the coolness of the water sent a shock through her. Her arms had to move away from her intimates as she used her arms to pull her into the deeper parts of the water.
She did it. Evie couldn’t believe herself. She’d left her clothes on the beach and there was nothing absolutely nothing between her and the sand and water now. Diving down beneath the surface she swam a short distance and came up. Part naughty and part rebellious let herself enjoy the water with the Taengean sun shining down. This had been such a good decision to indulge in something wild.
All of the tension from the nearing wedding and the escapades Lene and Pia had started their entire family was wired so tightly that it would take just one thing to go wrong and they were going to simply combust. Dipping back under the water, she simply held her breath, her eyes open as she stared at the colorful arrays of fish and coral. Feeling the need for a breath she popped up out of the water closer a little closer to the beach.
Water in her eyes made everything a little blurry but she saw movement by the cave. Her hand wiped at her eyes. What was that? Blinking she tried to hurry the process of seeing, giving a small shake of her head she caught the sight of three figures, boys, they had to be close to her brother’s age, and they had something in their arms. Blinking again, panic started to rise and she was about to yell at them but remembered her slight predicament. Glancing wildly about, she growled.
Why did this stuff always happen to her?
One of the boys held up her chiton and started waving it around like he’d won some sort of prize. Each of the others had one of her sandals. Oh, she was going to kill them just as soon as she figured out how she was going to get out of this water. The one with her chiton must have seen her and pointed to the others as all three turned to look at her in astonishment then start laughing.
They were so dead.
Suddenly, one with one of her shoes poked the others having caught sight or sound of something and they all took off down the coast. The little rats were taking her clothes with them. Fear was creeping up on her, what was she going to do now. Hade’s short hairs! Swimming a little closer to the beach, Evangelina clung to one of the shoreline rocks. Making sure to stay just deep enough that everything was covered… or she hoped covered, she watched to see what had sent those little scamps who'd mangled her mischief.

Why he’d gotten Alexa a cat was beyond him. The animal had been nothing but trouble since the moment they brought it home. Not only that, but the thing had scratched a huge hole in his favorite cushion and would not be dissuaded from jumping on the table during meal times. His youngest daughter was besotted and he was patient, but only up to a point. She had vowed to fix the cushion and had even pointed out that the thing could always be turned over onto the prettier side once the hole was repaired and that she would lock the kitten in a basket at night. The basket idea had gone horribly. The thing had yowled so loud that Alexa’s heart had broken and she opened the wicker door. No sooner had she done that, than the cat exploded out and wouldn’t let anyone catch it for an hour.
She’d decided that the best thing to do would be to go to the market with the kitten to get the sort of box that it might like. So she and the servant had gone, with him in tow. Everything had been fine, until the cat had had enough of being held, scratched its way out of the servant’s arms, and darted away into the crowd. His daughter had been fine for the first few minutes, but when they could not find the animal, she’d broken down into tears that, he personally thought, were a little immature for someone of her age.
Then, she’d done what she had thought was best, which was to beg her father, the best tracker in Taengea, to find her cat. Did he want to go tracking when night was coming on? No. Did he have things to do and an investigation of his own into the matters of the crown to see to? Yes. Was he going to say no to the pleading face of his youngest child when she begged and begged him to go? No. Thus, he was on the beach, in search of the cat who was most definitely down here. He knew that, because the cat had been scooped up and carried away by a group of boys who had found it in the market. They’d hidden it somewhere down here because they had the nerve to ask for a ransom.
He wasn’t so much tracking a cat as he was the scamps who were responsible for such an insult.
“Ahhh!” one of them had screamed in delight once they saw him coming. “RUN!”
They tore off down the beach. He noted that they had red cloth in their hands but didn’t bother with the why. Whatever else they’d stolen was not his concern. He was in no mood to make a fool of himself and run after them. What he figured, though, was that they’d stashed the basket somewhere around here and that he could locate it without their help. Moving towards the cove, he walked toward the water, half fearing that they might have put the basket in the water just to be mean to the cat.
Moving toward the shoreline, he looked around, not immediately spotting the girl clinging to the rocks.

The water was gentle, arcing softly into the waves that teased the shoreline with foam. Clutching onto a large rock, she watched the maddening scene play out as her clothes and what was left of her dignity race away with the little scamps who’d stolen it. The moments of freedom and the intoxication of her rebellion were long gone as the consequences of her actions were now settling down upon her.
She straightened, her body tensing as another figure strolled down the length of the beach. The sturdy frame and lightness of foot almost instantly recognizable. She closed her eyes, letting out a soft groan, her body sliding back a little deeper into the water. Of all the beaches on this blasted island, he had to come strolling along on this one.
Her eyes flashed open again as she pulled herself a little further behind the rock and peeked out watching him. Would he see her footprints in the sand that the tide had yet to erase? She winced, of course, he would. Tilting her head a little further out and away from the rock formation she continued to watch him. What is he doing?
Evangelina pressed her fingers to her lips. Under different circumstances, she might have called out to him and waved but… considering the exact nature of this predicament she thought it best to just let him be on his merry little way. It seemed every time she got near him, she turned into some sort of bumbling little fool who needed rescuing. Her nostrils flared with a little huff as the thought hit her that the bumbling little fool had really outdone herself this time in front of him.
He moved to the cove and was standing upon almost the exact spot she’d left her garments. Following the gentle trail of the water, he started down to the shoreline. Her heart stopped and her mind went blank. Her eyes flew wide open, water droplets clinging to the lengths of her lashes. He was walking almost a direct line to her.
At that moment, she was perfectly willing to overlook the fact that she’d issued an invitation for him to ride with her again a few mornings ago. Did he know she’d waited at their oak tree for almost two hours before she’d given up hope and instead of going for her ride had just… went back to the manor in a sulk? She wasn’t sure why she cared so much, but the fact remained that for whatever reason it was, she wanted him to care. Even if it was just a little bit…
Steeling herself for what she knew was about to happen, she tried to make sure all of her lady bits were covered and that there was an uncomfortable smile that would have been described better as a grimace on her face. Evie’s drenched hair looking more like an imitation of seaweed as it plastered to her face. It wasn’t a matter of if, but when the Taengean hunter caught sight of the bare-assed, stark naked mermaid staring a hole into him.

Because of her proximity to the rock, he did not notice her immediately. Instead, he noticed the water currents swirling around the coast and the crystal clear water that allowed him to see to depths as yet unknown. What he hoped was that the boys had not been cruel enough to place the cat's basket under the water and let the thing drown. That would be a bit too much to allow to slip. His attention was diverted by a school of small fish that darted toward taller rocks jutting out of the water and at first, he mistook the pale hand on the side of the rock as some sort of starfish but a second glance revealed it for what it truly was.
A human. His mind did not immediately leap to naked-hiding-girl, though he knew without needing to look a third time that his new query was a woman. The fingers had been too small for a man's and the size of the hand said adult, not child. With equal certainty, he also knew this woman did not want to be seen. What he then thought was that she was in some way connected to this cat ransom scheme. Why else would she be down here, at this exact place, at this time? It was too much of a coincidence. Perhaps she was the guard or mother of the boys. Who knew? What he did know was that he was going to find this blasted animal, one way or another and she was his first lead, and easiest one, on this search.
"I see you," he called lightly, stepping into the water. It was only ankle deep, though surged almost immediately up to his calves on the second step. The natural shelf of land was steep and water came up to his thighs as he stepped ever closer. "Stop hiding."
He had a speech planned. There wasn't much to it, exactly, except to use words first and force second. His title should do the heavy lifting for him, as far as wrenching out information. Leaning to the side, he followed hand to wrist to arm to shoulder. He was not terribly surprised not to see much fabric. It was silly to swim in a ton of clothes but he definitely did expect to see cloth when he was waist deep in the water. Not a woman huddling down and stark naked.
He didn't bother to try to identify the face. All he got was the impression of unclothed body before he jerked his gaze upward to the clouds. "Why are you naked?" He asked without preamble. Apparently he'd been wrong about the cat guardian.

She would probably regret not diving into the watering and putting as much difference between herself and him as soon as she heard the accusation come out of his mouth. So he saw her, did he? Her arm tightened on her slippery, wet breasts. Evangelina had never been the sort to turn around though. She wasn’t going to tuck tail and run away. That was probably the exact reason she ended up in these sorts of situations as frequently as she did.
‘Stop hiding.’ It was a bit of an arrogant command. Had anyone who was hiding ever in the history stopped hiding simply because someone commanded it? A rather unladylike snort escaped her.
“Go away,” She half-hissed and half-croaked. The briny air leaving her throat a little drier and her voice a little scratchier. The very fact that she was hiding, should have told him she didn’t want to be seen. Pulling herself another step back behind the shelter of the tall rock.
She peeked around the rock and came face to face with him. It was a simple reaction to being spooked that caused her hand to drop without a thought from her breasts and scratch the surface of the saltwater and flinging it towards his face. Realizing she was standing there almost completely exposed, both arms shot out to cover her breasts.
He’d found a kitten in the water all right… just not the one he was looking for. Eyes that she knew were a stormy blue color shot straight towards the sky. Was he waiting for the sky to open up and suck him up into it? Why was he the one embarrassed, she was the one who was standing there completely in the buff.
‘Why are you naked?’ He certainly didn’t waste any time just jumping straight to the point. No, hello. How are you? Lovely day for a swim isn’t it. Just straight to the point.
“Why are you clothed?” Evangelina found herself shooting back at him with a slight snarl. Blinking, she opened her mouth to continue talking but as long as he was staring up at the sky like that she couldn’t concentrate on what to say. “Oh, for Gods’ sake, Lord Gavriil… Do stop staring at the sky like that… This isn’t the first time you’ve seen a naked woman, I hope.” Her arms tightened around her again. She huffed heavily, “I’ve lost my clothes… What are you doing out here?”

"Then what, pray, would you like me to look at?" He asked as he followed the command to look away from the sky and instead looked at the surface of the water. That wasn't safe, it turned out. Her form rippled across the glass sea in a near perfect reflection. This prompted him to cast his gaze completely to the side, his profile now all she would see. Her snarky question as to why he was clothed went unanswered. It was obvious she was struggling for some sort of control of the situation and he let that pass.
"I have, but the point is that I haven't seen you naked and I am attempting to preserve your modesty-what do you mean you've lost your clothes?"
What did she mean to be undressed in the first place? This beach might seem private but he and those boys were perfect examples of how it wasn't. In his own forest, on his own land, he swam naked too, but not right outside Vasiliadon where anyone could just come up. It was reckless but he should have expected it from her, considering their last few interactions. She'd proven herself a bold young woman. This was probably nothing. He might find her down at the docks playing a game with sailors next. The sky was the limit with this one.
She'd managed to get him a bit off balance and he didn't like the feeling. He knew what to do in most situations but instead of shouting "excuse me" and fleeing, here they were, having a heated discussion. Heated on her side, at least. His tone was perfectly calm.
He waited for that answer before answering her next question with, "I am kitten hunting." Probably he should have explained about the missing cat and how he'd find no rest at all at home until he came home with the bloody thing. How there'd be tears if he didn't. Yet, he left that part off, because he didn't think it pertinent to tell her.

Blinking at him, she couldn’t tell if he was serious or not. Could he really not tell what the correct answer to that question was? His gaze fell from the sky to the water, or more interestingly to the reflection of the shallow depths. Her reflection. This probably should have embarrassed her, modesty wasn’t something she really understood. Water lent to the buoyancy of breasts and saltwater even more so. She wasn’t built quite like her Aunt Eirinni in that department but, her breasts in the water looked pretty darn good if she was going to be rather candid about it.
It was obvious, he’d seen a bit more too because his eyes darted from the water to sideways still not looking at her. Did he realize how frustrating that was? Was he trying to push her buttons?
“How about my face,” She growled warningly at him, “Why don’t you try there.”
‘I have, but the point is that I haven't seen you naked and I am attempting to preserve your modesty-what do you mean you've lost your clothes?’ He stressed the word ‘you’ and her eyebrows rose just a tiny fraction at him. She waited until he looked her in the eye before she spoke. Evangelina was not going to have a conversation with him while she was naked in the water and have to talk to the side of his face. If she was going to be embarrassed about this… so was he.
“My modesty seems to be a bit of a lost cause at this very moment and while I appreciate your attempts at preserving it. I’d much rather not have to talk to your throat or the side of your face.” The need to wipe one of her hands was growing, and it was starting to bother her. Between her wet breasts and her wet hands and the ocean… all of the moisture was starting to make her concerned that something… Okay, so she was worried one of her breasts might make a break for it and slip out of her hands. Gods, this had seemed like such a fun idea at the time, she sighed inwardly at that.
“I mean I obviously do not have them anymore,” Her tone was tense like she expected that to be a simple enough answer but she continued. “I left them on the beach and then these boys showed up and they… well….” Her head bobbed a little as she tried to think of a nice way to say that the little scamps had played a rather nasty little prank on her and had taken off with them. “Well, they aren’t on the beach now.” She huffed feeling her blood pressure starting on it’s way up again thinking of those little boys. May the Gods have mercy on them if she ever got a hold of them… She was going to drag them by the ear back here, have them strip their clothes and then she was going to light their garments on fire.
It was at that moment Gavriil decided to answer her with what he was doing out here.
‘I am kitten hunting.’
Her head slowly lifted back from where it had ducked down moments ago in thought. Dark eyes were wide with surprise, shock, and mortification. He’d just said he was kitten hunting. Had he been watching her all that time? He made a point of telling her he thought she was a kitten on their ride, hadn’t he? Was this some sort of kinky thing of his?
“Kitten hunting… KITTEN HUNTING. Preserve my modesty, why I ought to… I ought to…,” Without a thought, her right hand came off her breast and smacked him with all of the force she could muster across his cheek. Her inside palm burned and she instantly regretted letting herself lose her temper but there was something maddening about this man. Her hand instantly reached to her breast again covering it. She tried to stomp past him, but stomping in chest-deep water is next to impossible. She looked more like she was skipping, so she just started walking past him. Who cared if he got to see her backside in the buff? She sure didn’t now. Passing by him, “Well, you found one… Now if you’ll excuse me… I have to go plan three murders and find some clothes.”

This was, without a doubt, the strangest conversation he’d ever had. Somehow he’d managed to offend her by not looking at her while she was naked. Eventually he brought his eyes to her face and locked them there. This was not a good thing to be doing. He should be turning around to give her privacy or perhaps even walking away. Yet, here they were, with her demanding he look right at her and speak. Highly unusual.
He was not unaware of her naked state, either, which made it all the worse. People liked to joke that he was immune to temptation but that was the furthest thing from the truth. He was just better at hiding it than most people and not indulging in vices. His thoughts kept trying to slip away to places long shut away but he valiantly forced them to stay in the moment and focus on what she was saying. So those boys had taken her clothes. That accounted for the cloth in their hands. His thoughts were on that and his answer about kitten hunting dryly said.
His attention had wandered away from her completely, over to the beach where the boys had taken off. He was running the speed of the boys’ flight against how long they could reasonably keep up such a pace against his ability to get out of the water and run after them. His stride was longer and, though they were children, he was in marvelous shape for a man his age. He could absolutely catch up with them - especially if they no longer thought he was after them for their prank.
The movement of her head drew his notice and he looked back in time to find her staring, wide eyed and alarmed. Her words screeched out in short, spluttered bursts. He frowned, confused why kittens made her so angry and then took a step back as she slogged toward him. “Evangelina what are you-” her hand came away from her chest and then pain exploded across the side of his face.
For a moment, he thought nothing at all. His mind was completely blank and he stared at the horizon that his face had been forcibly turned to. Then he blinked and briefly touched his cheek. He did not need a mirror to know that there was a perfect handprint there. For someone so innocuous looking, she had amazing strength.
He dropped his hand away from his cheek and watched her, still in shock, as she slogged past him. The more offended part of him told him not to follow and to just let her go wandering nude on the beach. That’d work out just great for her. Then she could slap each and every other poor soul that found her. The other, less logical part - the one still confused about what had just happened, merely followed her progress through the water.
“Naked?” he gestured to her back. “You’re going to tromp across nearly a mile of beach naked? And why did you slap me?” Gods above. This woman made no sense.

The motion of the water hid just how much she was trembling. It had been years since she’d lost her temper enough to strike out at someone. Everything was crumbling around her right now and then there it was, he’d said just the thing to cause the glass to shatter. It had been strike him our burst into tears.
Gavriil’s hand on his cheek, the way he looked at her. It tore at her a little. She wanted to be angry. She wanted to stomp her feet and scream. The man was maddening with the things he caused her to do. Too easily, Evangelina’s guard slipped around him. Too easily, everything she knew better seemed to just float away. Hadn’t she learned anything about trust people? Hadn’t she learned the only person she could depend on was herself?
Switching her hold on her breasts, she wrapped her forearm across them and used her free hand wipe a wet lock of hair from the side of her cheek. The water had dramatically lessened and now the curve of her backside was exposed as the water tickled her thighs.
‘Naked?’
She twisted a little to look over her shoulder at him, she bit her lip. She couldn’t just wave her hands and conjure something to wear, now could she? What did he expect her to do? Live behind the rock the next couple of days while waiting for clothes? It was only dumb luck he’d stumbled upon her.
‘You’re going to tromp across nearly a mile of beach naked? And why did you slap me?’
Her free hand slipped to shield her garden as she turned around, her eyes narrowed.
“Do you have a better idea? It’s not like I can just wave my hands and conjure clothing for me. I also, highly doubt, you thought ahead and brought spare clothes,” She bent one of her knees and twisted it a little to help shield her as she waved her hand around to gesture just how secluded it was. “So what else do you expect me to do?” Her hand drifted back southward and she huffed a heavy sigh.
Tilting her head at him, her gaze narrowed at him. The last thing she wanted to do was to explain how humiliating it was to be standing there naked in front of him. He’d stood her up on the invitation for a ride. He’d told her she didn’t interest him… or was it that she wasn’t interesting? He’d teased her about being a kitten and a tree. He was a tree and he could handle her. Had she mentioned he’d stood her up and then found her after yet again another debacle? Naked and wet… alone and duped by a trio of scamps. Then to tell her he was kitten hunting. She’s snapped.
If he was watching her, he’d see the wheel’s in her brain spinning as she blinked staring at him. He wanted to know why she’d slapped him.
“Kitten hunting. You are kitten hunting? I snapped,” She gritted her teeth trying to remain patient with him. “You were being inappropriate and I snapped.” Her gaze softened and her gaze dropped to the water, her cheek twitched as the guilt set in a bit more. She hated losing her temper, and it somehow seemed even worse in front of him. “I am a little sorry. Only a little bit though…”
Bending her leg a little to help shield her again, she bit her lip and raised her dark eyes to him, “Why didn’t you go riding with me?”

When she whipped around, he sighed and forced his gaze elsewhere. Her slap had helped rid him of concern over her feelings. That she wanted him to face her while she was naked was now irrelevant. He did not want to be tempted down avenues that he’d closed off to himself and that she had already made perfectly clear were not her intent. That meant that his eyes were on the coastline that she’d been heading towards while she spoke. Her temper was something to behold. That was for certain.
The comments about clothes, he didn’t bother to acknowledge. Of course he hadn’t brought extra clothes! His himation would have been a good thing to have brought with him but he was walking along the beach. He hadn’t thought he’d need it. The thing was like a long blanket and would have been perfect. Alas.
As to the kitten hunting, he couldn’t read her mind and didn’t see the thought process. He’d quite forgotten the joke he’d made about the tree and kitten claws. “Yes. Kitten hunting. Those boys stole my daughter’s kitten as a prank and have hidden it somewhere near abouts. I fail to see how that’s inappropriate.” It was nowhere on the level of being in the Aegean with her like this, though, he reflected, that wasn’t her fault. Although, he did now have an idea about how to clothe her.
“I didn’t ride this morning, now turn around.” Her question did make him wonder if she’d waited for him though, because it seemed that way. He glanced at her, more and more sure that, yes. She had waited and had apparently expected him to be there, even though he’d given no word that he would. That was...interesting.
He turned at the same time that he essentially ordered her to and loosened the belt around his waist. His chiton was made for a man, which meant it would drown her, but it would also give her covering and that was the point. Lifting it over his head, he then held it out for her. “There.” It was more wet than not but the shoulders and chest were dry, at least.
The water was not freezing cold like it was in other parts of the world, but it was cold enough to make goosebumps zip across his skin. He was impressed that she'd stood here so long without shivering. With her having his chiton, though, he was resigned to a very awkward walk back into town.

It did not fail her notice that he’d not had a better idea. So maybe that would mean they could get past the astonishment of her standing out under the Taengean sun naked and wet. Her chin jutted out just a fraction. So, her idea was the best she had at that moment. Evie felt a tag smug at that. He could either leave her alone and let her deal with this humiliation or he could stop staring at her like she’d grown a second head.
As if her wish was answered, his gaze darted past her once again on something other than her. She cleared her throat softly and raised an eyebrow at him.
“Last I knew, I was fairly basic looking,” She feigned looking down and back up the length of her body, “Maybe a little smaller in some parts, but I do promise they are all the same as what you’ve seen before. I do not understand why it’s so hard to look me in the eye while we are talking.” Had she maybe had some clothes on she might have put her hands on her hips and stomped her foot at him, but right now that was not a good option.
‘Yes. Kitten hunting. Those boys stole my daughter’s kitten as a prank and have hidden it somewhere near abouts. I fail to see how that’s inappropriate.’
The words were like dumping a bucket of ice water on her. Her eyes blinked soaking in what he said. He was looking for his daughter’s kitten. She paled and all of the haughtiness slipped away. Her eyes widened. He hadn’t meant her. He wasn’t hunting for her. Reeling her head just a little bit backward, it was her time to look away. Oh boy! When I make a mistake I make a good one…
“Your daughter’s kitten…” The words slipped almost quietly out of lips, catching her bottom lip with her teeth she worried on it. She said a silent prayer that Poseidon would just drag her to the depths of the sea at this point it was the only merciful thing to do to her. “Ohhhhhh….” She murmured, “Ohhhh.”
“That’s… um… well… that’s not inappropriate.” She blinked, looking back to him, “I am… let’s just forget about that slap then… and well… everything… Let’s just forget all about all of this conversation.” Somewhere her words had started rambling. This was worse than standing in front of him without clothes. Oh, Gods! Closing her eyes, she took in a deep breath. He rattled her to her very bones. Growing quiet, she dipped her head and focused her attention on the water.
‘I didn’t ride this morning, now turn around.’
Lifting her eyes momentarily to him at the mention of not riding that morning. It was like it was a simple answer. She wanted dearly to probe at that. What did it mean that he didn’t ride that morning? Had he skipped riding because he’d known she was going to be riding? Or… or… There were so many options. She’d stuck her foot in her mouth regarding him quite enough so she stayed oddly quiet. Until he issued the order for her to turn around.
“What? Why?” The words leaked out of her mouth before she could stop them, as did the odd look she gave him. What did he want her to turn around for? Pursing her lips and rolling her eyes, she turned around, sighing at the inconvenience of this.
It didn’t stop her one bit from tilting her head sneakily and glancing back to see just what he was doing. Her gaze stopped being a simple glance when she saw him undoing the belt on his chiton and she found herself staring at him. What was he doing? He lifted the chiton over his head, the fabric running over his body in a teasing reveal. Sweeping her gaze slowly up the length of his muscular thighs, narrow hips, and up the flat firmness of his chest. Good Gods! What was he doing! Her heart was racing and her mouth had suddenly gone dry. Had he lost his mind?
‘There.’
When had she turned completely around? She didn’t immediately register he was handing her his chiton. Her bravado had disappeared with his little strip show. She couldn’t take her eyes off of him. Biting her bottom lip without thought, she ran her gaze back down him. He was firm but a softness existed there too. The strangest urge to reach out and touch him made her palms itch. She wanted to bite that curved spot where his neck connected to his shoulder. Oh, Gods! This was bad. This was so bad.
Snatching the chiton from him, she entirely forgot that her own body was on display. She needed to get away from him before she did something incredibly stupid. Bite him? Why in the fuck did she want to bite him?! Nope. It was wasn’t safe to look at him. She peeked again at him, her gaze falling to the fabric of his perizoma. It was wet and… and she could see everything. Oh, Gods! It was so hard to look away. She licked her lips, he was larger than she’d imagined. Wait! Had she imagined... Oh, Gods! She had. What was wrong with her?!
“I… um… This was a bad idea… I um…” Her brain wasn’t even working. Why couldn’t she speak? “I am not really seeing how this was helpful.” She only managed to get those words out after she’d dragged her gaze to the sky. The sky was interesting after all. Who knew… Look there was a cloud there… Oh, Gods! He might as well be naked.
“I can’t believe this was your solution,” She growled at him crankily, “You are the most confusing… irritating…” Remembering the chiton in her hand, she started fumbling to put it on. Dressing was a pretty basic life skill, but her brain wasn’t allowing her to succeed at that. “Arrrrgh! Stupid clothes.” She growled again. This was his fault. “I am resending my invitation to be friends. You, sir, are trouble…. With a capital ‘T’!”

Basic looking? Such a female thing to say. It didn't matter if she looked exactly the same. His base nature still wanted to look. Look and touch, which he was not allowed to do. Propriety forbade it, his respect for her as a person forbade it, and his position as not her husband all said that he would neither look, fantasize, or touch her. It took all of his more logical nature to calm any thoughts that tried to go to places they shouldn't.
She was in no danger of him suddenly coming undone and losing all control. If there was one thing that Gavriil of Dimitrou had in spades, it was self control. This was possible through years of practice, of self denial, and patience. He could not stand weakness of character and would not permit it in himself.
When he turned to give her the clothes, he did not let himself look at her. Her vanity didn't need stroked by his gaze and he already knew he'd like what he saw. There was no point in making sure.
"I am not likely to ever forget such a slap," he said. "I am an archer. I rarely engage in hand to hand combat, so I'll thank you for the reminder that I need a refresher course." It had been such a long time since he'd been hit or slapped or punched. The battle with the Creed had been such that he'd barely had to wield his sword. As an archer, his was a highly valuable skill and kept toward the back of the line. A general's top priority was to protect their long range fighters. She'd reminded him that perhaps he'd relied a little too much on that fact.
He was a little surprised that she didn’t immediately take his offer of the clothes but he refused to look at her, except to side eye her to see what she was doing. The confusion was immediate. He had not taken into account that the water was crystal clear, that his hip coverings were now sheer, and that she looked so beyond horrified that he couldn’t quite figure out for the moment what to say. Except, he realized as he caught himself staring at her face, she wasn’t horrified so much as shocked.
Swiveling his hips away so that she’d only see his thigh, he pressed his lips together and covered himself with his hands once she finally snatched his clothes. “You can put those on at any time,” he encouraged, keeping his eyes down at the water lapping against his body. This wasn’t quite as embarrassing as he’d assumed it might be. He could now see why she wasn’t totally unabashed, now that he was practically naked and she wasn’t.
“You had the right idea,” he said presently while she was gawking at the sky. “This is refreshing.”
That started a whole cascade of babble, that he merely grinned at. Her being flabbergasted was the territory he’d expected right off, not the anger. This was playing to the way events should have unfolded and he was incredibly patient with it. When she’d finally finished, he shrugged his bare shoulders. “I figure it’s less appealing for people to look at me naked versus you.”
He waded past her, keeping his hands over his groin so that she wouldn’t have to worry with where to look. “Go home. You’re safe now and it’ll be dark soon. I still have to find the cat.” His progress toward the beach was swift.

‘You had the right idea, this is refreshing.’
Evangelina closed her eyes and tried to ignore him. She needed him out of her mind. At least just for a few minutes. That was all she needed was just a few minutes to put her walls back up. She didn’t have a lot of experience with these sorts of feelings and what experience she’d had… It had left her feeling like a bird with only one wing.
“Mmm… Fantastic idea. You see where it landed me.” She mumbled just under her breath. The evening sun was setting, it no longer felt like she’d just tilted her face upwards toward a flame.
It was easy to look at her and label her outbursts as anger, but it was the emotions that simmered just underneath. She’d gotten pretty darn good at hiding those feelings. They were the real her… Insecurities lay there. So did frustration, helplessness, and anxieties. It was easier to act out then put names to feelings that too many people would use against her if given the opportunity.
‘I figure it’s less appealing for people to look at me naked versus you.’ He’d been grinning at her rant, that wasn’t the usual reaction. She might not be very big but she was used to at least commanding a bit of fear in her outbursts. Instead, he shrugged, simply shrugged and told her better him to be naked than her. That stopped her mid-argument and she stared at him.
“Less appealing?” Her voice squeaked pausing only to suck in her breath before resumed with, “After that teasing strip of clothing you just did?” Evangelina survived untangling the garment enough to get it on her correctly but it did swallow her, and in all her fumbling it was completely soaked through as well.
He waded past her but she didn’t spare even a sideways glance at him. He wasn’t interested in her. She wasn’t interesting. He didn’t want to get married again. She closed her eyes again. This whole ordeal had become so mangled. He’d mangled all of this for her, all of her thoughts of him as just a friend were ruined. Whatever this was that she was feeling, it was more real than anything she’d felt since…
A grimace touched her face. She wouldn’t go there right now.
‘Go home. You’re safe now and it’ll be dark soon. I still have to find the cat.’
Somehow his words hurt a little. Not that he’d want to be looking for the cat dressed like that with her around. She wasn’t so cruel as to buck against those orders. Sensing he needed to remain with some of his pride intact, Evangelina started sloughing off making sure she was turned to go the opposite way down the beach. Coming out of the water, she paused on the sand, readjusting his chiton on her now that the water wasn’t trying to pull it in different directions.
Tilting her head, she glanced at him, “I am sorry for slapping you and you having to help me again… I didn’t mean to sound ungrateful. Thank you for the chiton.”

Tilting her head, she glanced at him, “I am sorry for slapping you and you having to help me again… I didn’t mean to sound ungrateful. Thank you for the chiton.”
Their trek through the water didn’t take too long and soon enough, he made contact with dry sand. He looked at her. His chiton hung on her like a huge, dark green blanket, hugging her in odd places, with the belt bunching the fabric around her hips. He kept his hands cupped around himself for modesty’s sake, despite the fact that he might as well not. It wasn’t like she was staring. He’d let go once she was on her way.
He stopped when she spoke, not interrupting her apology. His head tilted a bit to the side and a slight frown creased his features once she was done. “I don’t mind helping you when you need it. I don't rescind my friendship, even if you've rescinded yours. I know too much about you now.” That was a strange thing for her to say - like he was terribly inconvenienced helping her. Which...maybe in their current predicament, he was a little bit. He considered asking her to go into the city and get him clothes, but he really, really didn’t want her showing up to his house, in his chiton, asking for garments and bringing them to him. Or, worse, sending a servant to do it. Too many explanations.
“I am sorry that I alarmed you and made you feel as though you needed to slap me. I should have walked away the second I saw you uncovered.” But he hadn’t. At the time, it had seemed rude to just wander away. Now that he was thinking much more clearly, not being as shocked and distracted by her, he realized he could have left her here, gone and gotten a servant to fetch clothes and had one of her female retainers bring them back for her. That would have been totally appropriate.
Hindsight.
“I’ll just carry the basket at my hips. This will be...” he searched for the word but let the sentence drop when it didn't immediately come to him. His thoughts were already on when he would be walking back into Vasiliadon. His only saving grace would be that the night would be fully upon them by then and he’d be able to go under cover of darkness. Those looking out the window might not recognize him at all. Firstly, he wasn’t a regular fixture in the city as it was. Secondly, no one expected the head of Dimitrou to be wandering naked through the streets with a mewling kitten in a basket.
This was his silver lining.
At that moment, he heard what he thought could be whining. He hadn’t noticed it before because of the sounds of the water, their conversation, being distracted in general. “Oh...I think I might have found it already.” He began to walk to the left, towards where she had been hiding behind the rocks, intending to go a bit past that.

Evangelina should never have stopped, she should have kept walking and let him go on his own way and her on hers. But something had stopped her and she found herself studying him as he replied to her. His face creasing as he spoke.
‘I don’t mind helping you when you need it. I don't rescind my friendship, even if you've rescinded yours. I know too much about you now.’
Her toe dug into the dry sand as she swiveled it digging a small hole. Tilting her head, she bit her lip. What did it mean that he knew too much about her now? Ducking her head, she stared at the sand.
‘I am sorry that I alarmed you and made you feel as though you needed to slap me. I should have walked away the second I saw you uncovered.’
She’d said a lot of things lashing out, had lost her temper and had slapped him. Most, if not all, of it, hadn’t actually been meant for him. From beneath her lashes, she slid a glance across to him.
“You know those things I said… they weren’t meant for you, don’t you?” Licking her lips, she settled her gaze back on the sand and sighed. “The blame. The anger. It wasn’t meant to be directed at you. You were just the unlucky victim of a lot of pent of anxieties that came spilling out.” Shifting uncomfortably, she wasn’t sure what he’d said exactly but she’d found herself opening up just a little bit to him. Slanting another look over to him, she met his reassuring gaze, “I hope you realize it would take more than this latest fiasco for me to truly rescind my friendship. And I am very glad you didn’t walk away.”
Her lips quirked up in an odd sort of sad smile, “Somehow, I think you leaving me there would have made me feel even worse about this mess.” Just like she’d been about to do. She’d been very near just leaving him here to figure out what to do with this mess that she’d put him in. Catching her bottom lip in her teeth, the guilt punctured her conscience. Throwing her shoulder’s back she prepared herself, she wasn’t the sort to just walk away when there was a friend in need. Even if they would prefer that she just... go away.
“I am sorry for slapping you,” She started towards him, “You did wound my pride by saying I wasn’t interesting when we were riding.” Evie quirked a smirk at him and shook her head, “Then you didn’t show up with my invite to go riding… and that bruised my delicate pride a bit more.” Siding up to him, she tilted her head, not breaking contact with his eyes. “Then you show up and I was naked and wet stranded on a beach after having my clothes stolen and you said you were kitten hunting.” She blew out a long sigh and looked away, “My bruised pride instantly assumed you were meaning me and… I snapped. I didn’t know you were looking for your daughter’s kitten. I won’t make any more assumptions regarding you that’s for sure.” Slanting a quick glance at him, she smiled and blew a strand of her hair away from her face.
“I am not going to let you have to walk back to your mansion in that,” She glanced down, briefly, very briefly and pointed with her index finger before she continued. “I am sure those boys probably dropped my clothing a little way down the beach… as soon as the thrill of stealing it wore off along with the fascination of ladies garments... I don’t see them toting it around for long. There are too many other things for those scamps to get into. I’ll just walk a little way down the beach there and hope they’ve just dropped them.”
She was quiet for a moment, watching him listening to something. Blinking, she looked about and then she heard it. The faintest of meows. Frowning she followed him from towards the rocks she’d been. He was actually hunting his daughter’s cat. A part of her wished the ground would just open up and she’d be lost in a sinkhole.
“That’s an actual kitten. Oh, Lord Gavriil! I am so sorry!” She winced, but didn’t take her eyes off of him as he looked for the hidden basket.
