“I can’t tell what expression you’re making.” Hebe told Evi. That was actually the point of the whole experiment. Her comment was actually a compliment. Her sister praised her efforts as well, so she assumed she was doing it right. As young children often did, she wanted confirmation from an adult … in this case, Lady Eloria. She thought nothing of marching up to her and asking directly.
She held the funny face as Lady Eloria moved closer and observed her. She could smell the scent of her perfume. I wish I was old enough to wear perfume. The foreign lady admitted that she didn’t know what kind of face she was making but pointed out that she had rolled her eyes. Oops! One could tell what another was thinking by what they did with their eyes. From now on, she would have to remember only to move the parts of her face that were covered by the flab.
Still, Lady Eloria had not guessed correctly. Her lips had not been curved into a smile or a snarl, because she was pretending to be annoyed and not happy or angry. I fooled her! When the woman claimed she had done well, she lowered the flab and grinned at her. “Thank you, Lady Eloria! You are an excellent teacher!”
Hebe skipped back to Evi and Emilia. She paid no attention to what the other ladies were doing. The youngest three girls formed their own little group. Her sister made another face. She looked at her eyes but they held a blank expression. Hebe was about to make a guess when Emilia stepped on the hem of her chiton and fell to the floor. Evi was closer and knelt beside the princess, asking if she was all right. Hebe hoped she had not hurt herself.
Princess Persephone apologized to Lady Eloria, who didn’t seem bothered by the interruption and was also concerned about Emilia. Hebe felt an affinity with the younger princess, for she was clumsy too. Noticing Emilia’s fab lying forlornly nearby, she picked it up and folded it before holding it out to the princess. “Here, Your Highness,” she said. “Why don’t we all try again?” She had the perfect face in mind, one that nobody would ever figure out.

It was nearly all Elysia could do to keep hold of her fan. Her shoulders began to shake and she pressed the fan right to her face, trying her absolute best to suppress the giggles but they kept coming. Thankfully, they were silent. No one was looking at her anyway. They were focused on Princess Emilia who, somehow, had managed to trip on her own dress while standing in place. Honestly. They couldn’t pay for entertainment this good. She had absolutely nothing against Princess Emilia whatsoever but, she was for the moment, entirely happy that the young princess would never have any real power. She could see it now: the Athenian military lined up, ready for battle and Princess Emilia was there to send the troops off into danger...except she fell straight on her face into mud.
That sent a fresh wave of giggles into Elysia who momentarily buried her face against Iris’s shoulder. Maybe only nobles were invited because of what a barnyard travesty this was and they didn’t want the lessers to know that their ‘betters’ weren’t that much better. It was only when Lady Evi suggested that a physician be called that Elysia finally got it together. She fought down her giggles, making full use of the fan to keep the top of her face straight while her mouth still struggled a little to keep the giggles at bay. But, at last, she was in full command of herself and able to snap her fan closed.
She stood from her chair and moved over to see if the princess was alright. The fall was only funny, of course, if no one was hurt. If Emilia did harm herself, then that was a different matter entirely. There wasn’t any blood that Elysia could see from here. She moved beside Evi, dipping down and sitting back on her heels while her legs remained closed and to the side in an elegant pose. “Your highness?” she didn’t presume to reach out and when she sensed she was in the way, she edged to the side. “I think she is alright,” she said to Evi and then looked around the group at large. However, Elysia was no physician and if one did need to be called, she felt Princess Persephone ought to be the one to make that judgement for her own sister.
Princess Persephone, however, seemed to feel the way Elysia did. She swooped in to gracefully help the younger princess to her feet and it was at that moment that Elysia snapped her flabellum open again to hide her lips pressing themselves together in yet another attempt to suppress giggles. The Princess was evidently not happy and Elysia chose to move back to her seat so as not to be in the way but she did tap Lady Evi’s back with her fan in a ‘hello’ as she did so, settling again by Iris.
The rest of the lesson, thankfully went fairly smoothly. By the end, Elysia approached Princess Persephone. She dipped into a curtsey and gestured to Lady Eloria. "Thank you for a most diverting afternoon, your highness. I am sure our guest has never had the honor of teaching such a group as ours. You did most beautifully."
She was now tugging Iris behind her, sensing her cousin would rather dust the entire palati's ceilings than to stay much longer.

Whilst Persephone feared the entire event to have been a disaster of the highest order, it appeared, by the end of it, that Lady Eloria had rather enjoyed herself. Determined to see the girls master the basic machinations of the flabellum and not wishing to continue their learning until they had accomplished the foundations first, talk of flirtatious fan use and gameplay against the males of court was placed to one side as a possible future event. Instead, the young women of the Athenian court spent the next hour flicking the fans back and forth and attempting to hide expressions behind the fabric and lace.
In truth, with all dignity mostly gone given their rate of three bottoms having hit the floor already, the lessons ceased to attempt to be something of elegant decorum and turned more into an activity for the youngest of the group. As Persephone was approached by her sister and those like her to guess the face she was making behind the fan, Persephone was left with little choice but to play along and resign the entire event to be more for them than the elder ladies of court. She played with her sister, offering guesses that she knew to be wrong so as to ensure her confidence in using the flabellum and then returned the trial upon Emilia, asking her to name the expression that she was making behind the slats of the little affect.
The afternoon passed more easily once the prestige and dignity of the woman teaching them was thrown out of the window and Lady Eloria seemed only too happy to encourage such things. She found the younger ones of the group highly enchanting - particularly that of Lady Hebe - and enjoyed coaching everyone through the innocent mistakes and childish larks that such skills often caused in the process of their development.
By the end of the session, Persephone found her embarrassment over such antics receding to little but a minor fog in the back of her head and her spirit undoubtedly lighter with jovial amusement.
When the ladies parted, in order to return to their homes, she was able to offer them all a fresh and genuine smile of parting, with warm wishes for safe travel upon her lips. Most of the noble ladies were the first to leave, the royals and the closest acquaintances of Persephone or her sister the ones to linger the longest. Persephone turned to greet the farewells of Lady Elysia when she stepped forward, Iris at her arm.
'Thank you for a most diverting afternoon, your highness. I am sure our guest has never had the honor of teaching such a group as ours. You did most beautifully.'
Persephone smiled kindly.
"Beautiful is perhaps not the word I would use, but there was an art of entertainment to the afternoon. Diverting is indeed suitable." She glanced upon the fan that was still in Lady Elysia's hand. "I noted that such skills served you well at times. So, perhaps the afternoon was more useful than it might have otherwise purported to be." Her gaze was knowing, as she offered Elysia a look of amusement. She had picked up on the woman laughing at her sister behind the folds of her flabellum...

Let it be said that Emilia was trying, really she was. But why was there such a need to have so many things going on in one's head? She had to walk just so, act just so, laugh enough but not too loud, tilt her head just that but not too much, never linger too long with one person, never linger too short a time with one person and on top of that, she had to carry on a decent conversation and find conversational topics? Emilia really felt she had all the right to be clumsy really, since she was using up all her brain cells just to get all the things she needed to do straightened out.
That she had fallen yet again in the span of an hour was something Emilia was fairly sure she'd be hearing from her sister later after everyone left. The young princess tried to convince the kind Lady Evi when she tried to come over and assure her, but as Persephone came over and whispered, Emilia had to swallow a gulp. It was rare for her elder sister would reprimand her, but it was more of that Emilia hated disappointing her sister.
Biting her bottom lip, she flashed Evi a quick grateful glance, before hurriedly nodding and scrambling up. The brunette winced a little as she placed some weight on her feet, but it would hold out for now, the brunette decided. It had to. She didn't want to be the cause of Persephone's embarassment.
Taking the fan offered to her again by Hebe with a whispered "Thank you." before they returned to the lesson. Emilia was grateful the rest of the ladies did not make a fuss, but the princess had to pay even more attention to not cause a scene again. Her movements were, thanks to her fall, slower as a result, which likely helped in reducing the likelihood of her having yet another mishap. At least she hoped she got it? It would seem the flabellum was indeed used to be a cover for facial expressions, as they spent the afternoon guessing one another's, but her sigh of relief was still quite palpable the moment the tutor announced the end of the session, and Emilia turned to Hebe and Evi as everyone made a move to leave.
"Thank you for the afternoon, my ladies. I confess... it would likely have been far less entertaining had you been absent." Emilia whispered the last part after checking none of the elder ladies of court were nearby. Her cheeky smile was fully in place as she grinned, and took a step back to offer them a small curtsy before their departure.

The Princess seemed fine as she scrambled to stand up. For her part, Evi had fallen silent, much to frightened to speak when Emilia’s older sister had also approached, rebuking her sister in a quiet whisper. Evi’s offered hand was taken and she leaned back to help Emilia up in silence, smiling politely, though her expression carried an edge of pity in it too. It seemed things like this happened a little too often. Maybe there was something wrong with the Princess after all. Evi didn’t ask though, knowing that would be beyond rude, especially in present company.
Feeling Elysia’s fan tap her on the back of her shoulder, Evi turned her head and smiled shyly at the older woman in greeting. She didn’t know Elysia well, but she certainly liked what she did see: a woman who seemed so confident in her own skin, and ready for any event or situation that life threw at her. She seemed poised and calm and confident, exactly how Evi wanted to be. Evi thought to herself that, if the opportunity presented itself, she would get to know Elysia better.
The lesson passed without another hitch, save for the odd flabellum being dropped here and there as the ladies continued to practice with the craft of using them. Evi watched the older women for most of the lesson, as they seemed to understand what they were actually supposed to be doing. Evi tried to copy, sometimes with success, other times without. It wasn’t easy to use the flabellum, that much was true… but she had been introduced to it now and she could continue to practice - in no time she would be an expert at using the strange contraption.
“Yes, I am very glad you were here also, Your Highness,” Evi replied when Emilia thanked Evi and her sister. “It would not have been nearly as much fun had we not been able to spend some time with you.” It was placatory, in a way, and Evi stumbled over her words as she tried to sound extra formal in her goodbye to Emilia. She was a Princess, after all, and was to be treated respectfully, that was definitely something she remembered from her etiquette lessons, and she returned the curtsey, but couldn’t keep her smile from growing into something warmer as they said their goodbyes. Evi liked the girl.
The girl nudged her younger sister as they parted from Emilia, “Hebe, we should head home now, would you like to walk back?”

The Princess seemed fine as she scrambled to stand up. The girl nudged her younger sister as they parted from Emilia, “Hebe, we should head home now, would you like to walk back?”
“You’re welcome, Your Highness,” Hebe grinned as Princess Emilia took the flab from her. She seemed to be fine, as Mistress Elysia said. Why did she smack Evi with her fan? Did they know each other? Her sister smiled at her shyly, so probably not. Maybe that was how she thanked her for assisting Emilia. At least she didn’t smack me too.
It seemed that making faces was all the flab was good for. It wasn’t magical at all. Her disappointment didn’t stop Hebe from enjoying the rest of the lesson, bouncing around the room from one lady to another asking them to identify the faces she made. She was glad she didn’t have to sit in one place anymore. A seven-year-old girl had too much energy to stay still for long … which she proved by not only making ridiculous faces but twirling and leaping around the room with her flab open, pretending that she was at a grand ball.
She eventually went back to join Evi and Emilia, her face flushed and her blue eyes sparkling. The session finally ended and the three young girls said their farewells. “I’m happy that you were here too, Your Highness,” she chimed in, not to be outdone by her older sister. “Now we’re all friends.” Hebe thought everyone was her friend, even horses. Especially horses ... and cats and dogs and all of the animals in the world. It was probably fortunate that she didn’t voice those thoughts aloud.
The little girl curtsied to both princesses and then began walking toward the door with her sister. Her flab was still in her hand. It was pretty and she planned to keep it forever. Maybe it really was magical and she just had to figure out how to make the magic work. “Yes, let’s walk,” she agreed. “Or better yet … let’s run!”
