The last few days, there had been plenty of news to be going around in the city of Vasiliadon. Most of it had been concerning the house arrest of the King and Queen after Prince Irakles had presented evidence that the King had been responsible for the death of his father and older brother. However, that wasn’t the only news that had been circulating. Apparently, there was going to be a group of Egyptians who had been planning to meet with King Stephanos. There had been much speculation about what would happen when the King was not there to greet the arriving Embassy. While she knew that Vangelis would be informed when the embassy was arriving, she hadn’t heard anything from him on when it would be expected. The idea of getting to meet someone from such a faraway place as Egypt excited Imeeya and she knew that she was going to have to convince Vangelis to take her with him. Everyone from Taengea’s court would be there as well, so she didn’t think that he’d have any grounds to refuse.
That afternoon, Imeeya knew where she would be able to find Vangelis: in the office in the Order House where they were staying. Imeeya first stopped by the kitchens, where she grabbed some baklava that the cook had prepared. Bringing food would be a better excuse to bother him than dropping in to ask him a favor, and it just might put him in a better mood for when she did. Imeeya savored a small piece of the honey and nut flavored pastry as she walked towards the office where Vangelis was conducting his business.
When Imeeya reached the office, she knocked gently on the doorframe before entering, not waiting to be acknowledged. “I thought you might want a snack,” Imeeya said as she entered, placing the plate down on a clear spot of his desk within Vangelis’s reach. However, Imeeya knew she could only stay in the office for so long before it became apparent that this was just a pretense, so Imeeya decided to cut to the chase sooner rather than later. ”I heard that an Egyptian embassy was coming to Taengea soon.” Imeeya paused before wording the next part carefully. She didn’t want to appear too overeager ”I was wondering if I could go with you.” Imeeya was already excited at the thought of getting to meet foreign ambassadors, but she didn’t want to get ahead of herself. Of course, she’d have to know when they were expected so she could properly prepare to present herself, but she could worry about that after Vangelis had agreed to let her come.

Vangelis was a strong and capable man on the battlefield but he was also a diligent administrator. His discipline in his physical training led to a perfectionist tendency in the paperwork he was charged with completing - both as a baron and as a general (and even occasionally as a crown prince if it was something his brother Zanon could not take care of himself). He was the sort to pour over his work into the later hours to ensure that everything was exactly as it needed to be, with every instruction in his correspondences clear and every order he made for supplies or shipment he signed off on being complete and accurate. It was a good thing he didn't need much sleep.
What Vangelis was not however, was a multi-tasker. He was the sort of person and man who would focus on one thing incredibly intently and then move to his next task or duty with an efficiency that was beyond the norm but allowed no distraction or other elements to intrude. He worked in silence, in a private room away from other people and he never attempted to complete more than one task at a time. He was the same way in conversation. He only ever had one discussion with a single person and he disliked large gatherings where everyone would attempt to attract his attention all at once. He preferred one on one discourse where he could keep eye contact with the other person. It was a manner of socialising and talking that had many people consider him too intense to be comfortable around, but it worked for extracting the truth from people and cutting through the social, political politeness that he so despised.
As such, when Imeeya walked into the room, Vangelis was very distracted and hardly listening to her. He needed to finalise the piece of work he was completing before he could look up and address her appropriately - for then he would be able to give her his full attentions.
A murmured, "Thanks" was all she received for her efforts in bringing him a snack which, while sincere and heartfelt, was decidedly distracted. No doubt used to speaking with her mother at work (a woman renowned for her ability to politically juggle) and Chares whose job it was to listen when Imeeya spoke, it was understandable that she didn't realise that waiting would have garnered her a clearer minded Vangelis. Either way, Vangelis wasn't at all offended when she started up a conversation - he just wasn't properly listening.
"Yes, they arrive tomorrow." He responded to her query regarding the Egyptian envoy. He was frowning at the clay report in front of him, confused as to how supplies had dwindled below the standard level back in Chaossis when there had been no report of weather damage to the limited arable land they held. He took out a piece of parchment ready to write his steward a letter for further confirmation, his mind already registering Imeeya' first comment as dealt with and failing entirely to link it to her next.
At her request, Vangelis happened to look up, because to answer it, he required a question of his own, his hands stilling in their work.
"Go with me, where?" He asked her, with a frown, showing that - apart from his basic answers - he hadn't truly been listening to a word she said.

Imeeya had hoped that this conversation would be fairly straightforward. She’d ask Vangelis if she could come with him to meet the Egyptian embassy, he’d say yes, or at worst she’d have to do a little bit of convincing. Then she’d know when she had to be prepared to go to court and she could make her plans accordingly. Nothing had been going according to plan so far. Perhaps it was true that she shouldn’t have entered without waiting to be acknowledged, but Vangelis had been completely distracted for the entire time she was conversing with him. A small part of her wished that she could grab the papers out of his hand and force him to listen to her, but she quickly pushed that thought out of her head. It was neither polite nor helpful, and she knew better than to listen to her temper over such a minor irritation.
When he mentioned that the Egyptians were arriving tomorrow, Imeeya frowned a bit. That was little enough time to prepare. She had hoped that perhaps she might have had time to go out and shop for a new chiton for the event, but there would be no time to have a new one made now. She’d have to do with one of the ones that she had brought with her.
At last, Vangelis finally did look up at her to give her his full attention. Though the question only served to annoy her. It was as if he hadn’t heard a word that she had already said. How he’d managed to answer the other question without the words she said actually penetrating into his brain, she couldn’t fathom. ”To court, to meet the Egyptian delegation, like I was just saying.” A tinge of irritation had crept into her voice as she answered and she paused for a moment, trying to get her tone under better control. ”Surely, you’ve been invited.” It would have been unusual for him not to have been invited as a visiting royal. Yet, as thing stood in Taengea at the moment, she wasn’t sure that she could expect what was left of the Taengean government to adhere to expected courtesies at a time like this.

Blinking in recognition of what she was actually asking him, Vangelis - had he been a chattier or more open person about his thoughts - would have likely spoken: "oh, I see - my apologies." But the crown prince of Colchis was not just a man and unable to draw up the exact wording of the conversation they had had so far, he wasn't entirely certain if Imeeya had been unclear or himself too distracted to understand. As such, he made no apology and simply addressed the issue at hand with the same formal efficiency with which he approached every issue or topic.
"I was." He commented very simply when she expressed surprise upon whether or not he had been invited to the Court session that would herald the arrival of the Egyptians. "I had not been planning to attend." He added with a frown settling over his brow.
For the most part, Vangelis detested public events, but for another he disliked the idea of meeting a man who was General in the Egyptian armies. The chances were high that he would face such a man in battle - or even had done so in the past. He did not need a personal connection with someone against whom he had or might in the future lead an arm. It was prevalent to keep such emotions or personal attachments out of one's life when you were a military man. Or risk the softening of the iron will and temperament needed in the heat of battle.
Leaning back in his chair and rubbing the tips of his fingers over his chin for a moment before speaking again to his apparently startled cousin, Vangelis exhaled.
"I'm guessing that was neither the expected nor wanted response?" He offered the woman, a touch of informal connection breaking through for the girl he had watched grow up on the opposing branch of his family's genealogy tree. The both of them were baron and baroness, royalty in their bloodlines. It didn't mean they couldn't also know one another as cousins. And clearly Imeeya had been wanting a favour in his escorting her to the court session the next day. He frowned, his jaw popped out to one side, as his teeth ground out of line. "Is it so important to you that you attend?" He asked her with an open and genuinely curious tone, offering up the opportunity for her to secure that which she had entered his office wanting...

Imeeya had become increasingly used to her cousin’s bluntness during the trip to Taengea, so it didn’t surprise her when he got straight to the point. In fact, Imeeya found that she preferred conversations that way, without the unnecessary frills that diluted understanding. When Imeeya heard that Vangelis hadn’t been planning on attending she had to clench her jaw to keep it from falling open. While she knew that Vangelis never seemed entirely comfortable participating in state occasions, surely the duty to his country would take precedence.
Still, she didn’t feel like she could question him so directly. Vangelis was both the elder and the more high ranking of the two. Imeeya clenched and unclenched her jaw as she tried to rein in her disbelief that Vangelis would so casually decide not to attend an event of such importance. She started to carefully word her response in her head, with deference to his station so that her mouth wouldn’t run away with her. But it was Vangelis who broke the tension, addressing her in a more casual way. At that point, all the words she had planned left her head entirely, and the words swirling around in her mind lept from her mouth.
“As the future king of Colchis, I don’t see how it would not be important to you.” Imeeya only just managed to keep an accusatory edge out of her voice. At least she still had the wherewithal to keep from expressing just how idiotic she thought Vangelis’s behavior was. Imeeya grew bolder as she spoke, each word only serving to fuel the argument that she was trying to make and thus stoking her anger. “This is a chance to develop a diplomatic relationship with another country outside of Greece. Is that really that uninteresting to you? To have the potential to make new allies for our own future.” Imeeya stopped abruptly, realizing that she had overstepped, and falling quiet. Yet, she didn’t apologize for her outburst either. Perhaps it was something the prince needed to hear. ,

Perhaps it was something the prince needed to hear. ,
Vangelis watched his cousin with a calm expression that changed little as she spoke. The only hints at annoyance or reaction to what gradually turned from surprised curiosity to chastisement, were his eyes that narrowed a little at a time as she kept his hands together upon the desk, his forearms braced against itself surface, his attention focused on her. He stayed deliberately quiet as she never really answered the question, he had put to her. Whether he needed her answer or not, he guessed wasn't really the case. She had attended upon him to seek his escorting her to the event in question, which meant she had an interest in it regardless. His question had been more rhetorical in that sense, he supposed.
remaining quiet, however, only allowed Imeeya to continue speaking. Whether it was because she was attempting to seek a response for him or simply because she didn't like the quiet, he wasn't sure, but either way he found that holding his tongue on his part allowed an insight into Imeeya' truthful thoughts and feelings. Everyone tended to start out, in their communication polite and friendly and with social decorum ruling what they said and how they said it. Yet, given enough tension and wordless space, Vangelis found that most would speak to naturally fill the air and their more truthful thoughts and feelings were allowed to bubble to the surface.
When his cousin did bite her tongue in the end, Vangelis' eyes had narrowed enough to lower his brows a little. There was a dip of shadow between them as if in a semblance of a frown but it never properly gained the irritation or frustration of a full glare.
Taking a long and slow breath, the crown prince pushed himself up to standing behind the desk, keeping his movements calm and slow and nonthreatening - as he tried to do around young women (being a very large and very tall man who was limited in his proneness to smile, made him intimidating whether he attempted to be or not). Once on his feet, he moved around to the front of the desk and lent his rear against its edge. His legs struck out in front of him, one ankle over the other and his arms folded across his chest.
"Whilst I commend your political perspective on the situation, cousin..." He began, not wanting his corrections of her determinations to come across as condescending without some kind of praise of her manner of thinking to accompany them. "It will be a social event with no truth or honest connections for diplomacy..." Vangelis' lips curled into a sardonic and mocking smile at the falseness of just such events. "There will be no real interaction going on. All social decorum and polite manners that get you nowhere. On the other side of things... There will never be any diplomatic solution with Egypt. Their culture is too based on seek, conquer and destroy that which is not Egyptian. I would rather keep the face of the man I will likely one day fight in battle hidden from me for now..."
After a moment’s pause and a soft lift of one shoulder, Vangelis pursed his lips a little, as if in consideration for an alternative idea.
"That being said, the presence of Colchis there at a Taengean function might encourage the image of unity." He nodded, as if coming to his conclusion on the matter. "So, if you would like to attend the event, I'm happy to escort you." His face shifted slightly to flash one of those half smiles in her direction, happy to grant his cousin her request so long as it didn't negatively impact his own plans. And while he didn't particularly want to attend a social event with someone he one day might have to look into the eyes of and kill on the battlefield, it also had no significant impact on his life or his plans as prince, if he did...

While subtle, Imeeya could see her cousin’s growing disapproval as she talked. Yet, she wasn’t going to let him make her back down on her positions. She meant what she said, and she couldn’t think of any good reasons to think any other way. After she cut herself off, the silence stretched on as Vangelis deliberately rearranged himself before responding to her argument. While he didn’t actually chastise Imeeya, she knew just from the number of words that he was using that he felt very strongly about his argument, even if it was wrong. Imeeya felt herself frowning as he argued the point that there was no possibility of a diplomatic solution. She knew Vangelis had fought the Egyptians, and maybe he did know more about their culture than she did, but she couldn’t help but think that perhaps meeting Egyptians on the battlefield would not provide the most accurate impression of their culture.
When Vangelis was completely done with what he was saying, Imeeya opened her mouth to argue her point again, but then quickly shut it again as she processed what he had just said. While she still had a strong desire to argue against her cousin’s point, he had just agreed to bring her to the event. If she pushed her point any further, then perhaps he would change his mind. She pushed her temper down, not willing to risk ruining the entire purpose of coming and talking to Vangelis. She smiled back at her cousin, at first looking slightly forced, but then becoming more relaxed as she brought her annoyance under control. ”Thank you. I’ll go make the proper preparations.” Imeeya turned to leave the room, already thinking about what gown she would need to air out in time for the event. One day was not a lot of time to make sure that she had everything ready to be the most presentable.
