Xene was an early riser. She always had been and it was a difficult habit to get out of. She woke early, slept late, and filled her days with as much activity as she possibly could. These days, she tried to stay busy at all times. It was one of the few ways that she was able to keep her mind off the grief and off of whatever impending doom she was feeling that day. But some days Xene found that what she really wanted to do was pretty much… nothing.
Shirking her duties as princess every once in a while was a-okay in her book. Even a people person needed to recharge. But those days often came with the feeling of loneliness, another demon that Xene was trying desperately to avoid.
That morning she had woken early as usual, but had decided to laze in bed for a while. She listened to the birds outside while get cat snoozed peacefully at her side. Trailing her fingers into vibrant orange fur, Xene stared at the ceiling of her room, debating what exactly she could fill her day with. Stephanos was out of the question. The queen was so heavily pregnant Xene was hesitant to bother her… and she refused to allow herself anywhere near the Lord Leventi at that time. Too many confusing emotions. Too much frustration and a deep insecurity in determining her own feelings.
No, Xene's choice of action that morning was simply to ignore everything else. She washed and dressed without her ladies in waiting, donning her favorite soft pink chiton and leaving her blonde hair down with no plans on actually styling it. She planned to meet no nobles or senators or even courtiers. But she did plan on impressing her company on her sister. Her sister that she had missed out on too much time with in the last few months.
With this in mind, Xene navigated the halls of the palati. It took nothing to get the guards to let her into Gianna's room. Padding on silent bare feet across to her sister's bed, Xene found herself flopping beside Gianna and draping an arm across her body. "Gia, my beautiful, sleepy sister," she hummed sweetly as if to coax her sleeping beauty from sleep, poking her gently in the side for good measure. "I think it's time we be lazy princesses for once," her voice was sing song, hoping it would be enticing enough to draw her sister in for a day of relaxation, and frankly, much needed girl time. No kings. No uncles. No men.
Just the two of them.
"It's been so long," she complained as an afterthought.

"It's been so long," she complained as an afterthought.
It had been no secret within the walls of the palatí that Gianna had become a restless sleeper, plagued by nightmares every time she burrowed within the piles of linens on her bed. She would more often than not send for all manner of brews and concoctions from the kitchen and the royal physician. On the rare occasion something lulled her into Hypnos’s embrace, she would do everything in her power to make the most of it. And so the young princess had given explicit orders to her servants not to wake her unless the palace was under attack or her nephew was making his entrance.
Such explicit orders and specific circumstances were the very reason the blonde found herself stifling a scream when a body indelicately flopped next to her own, reaching an arm across her middle. Surprised and greatly annoyed, Gianna did not have to wait long for her sister Xene to announce herself in a honeyed voice, soothing enough for the girl to forget how she had been so rudely awakened. Instinctively, Gianna nuzzled deeper into her sister’s embrace, caught between sleep and listening to Xene’s proposition to laze about for a day.
“Hmm? I believe I am doing just that, sweet sister,” Gianna giggled, a yawn cutting her words short. She stretched her arms before gathering the quilts and bringing them closer. She had to admit that she welcomed every chance to avoid her duties as a princess and the never-ending lessons as an apparently never-ending student. And if she stayed in bed all day, her unfortunate tutors would know just where to find her…
“It’s been so long.”
An impish smile settled on her face as she scrambled out of bed, kicking at the quilts that had twisted around her legs in the night. With the time it took Gianna to cross to her wardrobe, her floor became covered in chitons as she pulled them out, searching for her favorite—a pale purple chiton the color of a wild iris. Once found, she made quick work of dressing, combing the sleep out of her hair with her fingers and twisting it out of her face. Forgoing her usual ornamentation, she sat on the stool and faced her sister, composed and ready for the day.
“So...what exactly does being a lazy princess entail?”

This was not the first time that Xene had woken her sister like this in her life. Many times, before their father and brother had died, Xene had made it her mission to bother her younger sister whenever time permitted. However, this was the first time since close members of their family had passed that Xene had taken the time out to crawl into bed with Gianna. For the moment, when Gianna had curled more into her, Xene couldn’t help but to melt slightly, her fingers grazing their way through the woman’s hair in delicate strokes. She would have been completely content for Gianna to go back to sleep if she wished.
Sleep was a struggle for Xene as well, though she had heard talk that Gianna’s struggle were particularly bad. She would have felt bad for her sister, but Gianna seemed inclined to sate Xene’s need for company. With Stephanos so constantly busy, Xene had been missing her main confidant and her closest sibling. But such were the woes of a new king who had no experience nor training. Though, the man truly was trying his very best in all things.
Stephanos had such a hedonistic nature that Xene had silently worried, at first, that Stephanos would keep to his normal philandering, drinking, and whoring instead of running the Kingdom. But she had been proved to simply worry too much. Stephanos surely did a mixture of those tasks, but at least he was not shirking his new duties as king.
With Gianna clawing her way out of her bed and padding across the stone, Xene leaned more into the blankets, stretching out luxuriously and giving a slight groan as she stretched out her back. She unabashedly watched Gianna dress and brush through her hair, fingering the quilts silently, as if in quiet contemplation of the room around them. Xene’s gaze drifted to the ceiling when Gianna asked her what being a lazy princess meant, a smile settling on lush lips. Running meticulously manicured fingers back through her hair, Xene gave a peaceful sigh.
“It entails asking the kitchens to bring enough food to last hours, enough wine and water to keep us sated, and not leaving this room until dark falls. Its been too long since we’ve been able to keep only each other company, Gianna. I feel as if we have to spend at least a little time catching up,” Xene noted casually, “And then maybe running our own personal gossip mill,” her shoulders shrugged before Xene pushed herself up into a sitting position. Her golden curls fell across her shoulders, unkempt and left wild. She had no intention of going anywhere else, so what did it matter?

There was a moment caught somewhere between sleep and waking, when Gianna, wrapped in her sister’s embrace, could almost forget the horrors that had befallen their family. For the briefest of moments, as she clamored from her bed to dress for the day, she felt whole. In that moment she was just a girl planning to spend the day with her sister as she had done so many times before. She watched Xene as she took over Gianna’s place in bed, making herself at home in the quilts.
With Xene’s response including copious amounts of food and wine as well as the promise of togetherness and gossip—all of the youngest’s favorite things if she was being honest—Gianna could feel the glimmer in her own eyes. It would be like when they were children hiding away from their tutors (and duties, by extension) in the secret nooks and crannies within the palace as they made their way to the kitchen for a midday snack. Just thinking of the figs and cheeses caused the girl’s stomach to growl and she was abruptly made aware of just how hungry she had become in the night.
Without waiting for her sister’s signal, Gianna made for her door and poked her head out, looking for any sign of life in the empty hallway. The corners of her mouth turned downward as her features took on an uncharacteristic frown, an expression that was becoming far more at home these days. The princess had almost given up hope when a servant turned the corner at a brisk pace. The girl couldn’t be much older than Gianna and she was certain she had seen this particular servant puttering around the kitchens once or twice.
“You there!” The girl startled at Gianna’s voice. Wide blue eyes stared at her and she felt a twinge of regret for exercising her authority in a way she had avoided since childhood. Lowering her voice in an attempt to ease the girl’s nerves, she continued, “Princess Xene and I have incredibly important matters to discuss today. Go to the kitchens and gather as many figs, cheeses, and olives as they can bear to part with and bring them promptly to my chambers. I am certain it goes without saying that our privacy is of the utmost importance, so we are only to be disturbed to keep the wine flowing and our bellies full.”
The servant nodded and hurried off with her orders. A stroke of inspiration had Gianna calling after the girl to remind her to provide cake as well. After all, what was a lazy princess without her cake? Satisfied with her work, she slipped into her room and returned her bed. Sinking into the quilts next to Xene, Gianna rested her head on her sister’s lap to relay her triumphs.
“I am pleased to report that we are well on our way to being the laziest princesses Taengea has ever seen, dear sister.”

Xene couldn't help but laugh with the briskness that her own sister exhibited in making Xene's vision a reality. They hadn't had moments like these together with one another for longer than she could remember. Maybe they had, really, but the stress of the last few months had done nothing good for Xene's own memories. Being able to spend quality time with her sister was important, just as spending time with their brothers and father had been just as important.
Sure, they were not the celebrated gender of human being that most people looked to, but Zenon had loved his daughters all the same. There hadn't been any instance of lack of love or resentment on either side of things. But now that their father and brother were gone and Stephanos far too busy to really give them any more than his attention at meals, it left just the two sisters to their own devices.
If they wanted to be lazy for an entire day? They were going to be lazy for an entire day. Surely the two of them deserved it after such horrors of the last months were impressed upon them. Lazing in her sister's quilts, Xene watched her sisters back as she alerted a servant to their needs, even smirking at the sound of the tone Gianna took with the girl. "We have such important matters to attend to," Xene conceded when Gianna joined her in bed again, trying not to grin too fully and give the other girl some more room in her own bed.
"Honestly, I don't think I could have said it any better myself. What did her face look like when you told her to bring cake?" Xene laughed, threading her fingers back through her loose golden locks and watching her sister with bright eyes. "Was she confused? You aren't usually one to ask for much, so I'm sure she must have been concerned. Hopefully we don't have our ladies in here asking if we're ill," Xene commented easily, stretching once more and then sitting up and rolling her shoulders slightly.
"I really just wanted some long moments alone so that I could ask you how you've been," Xene admitted when she was sure that the room would stay quiet. For now. Before long, people would be entering with the food and wine that Gianna had ordered for them. "Because we haven't... ever really gotten a chance to talk about anything or what any of this means for either of us." By this, she meant the death of their father and brother and the rise of Stephanos to the rank of King. "I also wanted to see if you had any thoughts of how we might better be able to serve our brother to ensure that he doesn't outright lose his mind with all of the extra strain he is under."
"Our world has taken such a... precarious turn and I wanted to make sure that either of us were not lost in the fray, dear sister," Xene finished gently, giving Gianna a weak, but tender smile.
