Celine was afraid to move. She didn't like to admit it, but she was. She was feeling a lot more afraid now that nearly everyone she cared about in Colchis was gone. At least she and Max were mutually in love. And she would come to him, because she'd promised. But not now. What was she going to do for the next couple of weeks until the next round of ships came in? She had friends she could stay with, but the truth was that, this very first time in Taengea in years, she was afraid to walk the streets even though she didn't want to be. Who knew how long a person's grudge could last? What if, ten years later- nine, after the move, whoever might have burned her house down was still looking for her family? Celine had matured, but she didn't think she'd changed so much in appearance that those who knew her by sight might not recognize her.
What had she been doing? Were the reasons behind her confession of love worth her life?
Yes. Love is always worth everything.
She still believed that with her entire being- but she wanted to be safe enough to get to him, too.
Standing still, staring off into the distance after the disappearing warship, the first of the tears she didn't want to shed ran down her cheeks. Crying wouldn't solve anything. It wouldn't restore her lost dreams, or add back the time Celine and Max could have had in love together before the war. But she couldn't help it, though her sobs were soft, her voice still somewhat weak from her earlier lung attack. She didn't want to draw attention to herself- there must be many friends, lovers, and family members of warriors feeling sad today- but she didn't know how she could get to her friends after she finished crying either.
Perhaps the departure of nearly all of those dearest to her in Colchis really had made her lose her mind, as she had feared it might. Since the move, she had rarely if ever been without at least one of her dearest friends close by. That was why she cried. But if the war only increased her sense of alertness to danger, it had also seemed almost inevitable.
Safety never lasted. Never. That was part of the reason why she felt she could never make very many new relationships.
But now she presumably had no choice, and she silently prayed to meet someone trustworthy in order to get through the next few weeks. The possibility of the future fulfillment of what dreams she still had might depend on it.
