A pirate needed her contacts, and Akila made sure to accumulate them wherever she could. So when arriving at Cairo it wasn’t long before word reached her ears about a potential job with a very wealthy client. And who was Akila to turn down the call for coin?
There was a tavern in the Mabsoot District that was perfect for a meeting such as today. It still being afternoon, the tavern would be empty. The man running it was a long time… friend of Akila. They helped each other out over the many years they have known each other. He was tight-lipped seeing as the amount of information the two had on each other, if one went down the other would go with it. And.. it was very good business being friends.
With the sun still very high in the sky, she made her way to the tavern with Khalid, her first mate. The man was tall and built, and often mistaken as captain by those who did not know better. And while some may take offense to that mistake, Akila quite liked that. It worked for her advantage. For Akila would prefer to listen first, judge if this was worth their time. Being able to quietly observe gave her an advantage. And too often if Akila was first to speak she would be immediately disregarded and put down because she was a woman. And that was a mistake that would cost her a potential job… and them a whole lot more.
Entering the tavern Akila left a small bag of coin at the bar. “Take your break,” she said simply. She was met with an eye roll but of course, he complied, leaving the two to their business. This had happened enough times now that a routine was in place. Akila circled the bar and poured Khalid a drink.
Not a moment later the door had opened. Akila could practically smell the wealth on the man. Adorned with jewels and lavish clothes, he was the exact type of person Akila would love to kidnap and hold ransom. Actually… upon a closer look was that…
Oh, this was interesting indeed. Akila did not make it a habit to know all the little Lords and Ladies in Egypt, but the H’Shiefa had caught her eye before. How could they not, with the amount of money at their fingertips? And with their vested interest in trade, Akila found herself robbing a Shiefa trade vessel from time to time. And even with a ship of stolen treasures, did it not seem to put a dent in their riches.
Interesting, Akila thought. What does a little Lordling what with a bunch of pirates?
Akila turned her back to him and his guards and topped off Khalid’s drink. “H’Shiefa,” she said under her breath so only Khalid could hear. Recognition flickered in his eyes. Akila turned to get another cup, pouring wine for the lordling.
“Word is,” Khalid said in his deep, rumbling voice. He didn’t even glance once at the guards, and Akila couldn’t blame him. They didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. “You’re looking for someone to do a job?”
Great, straight to the point. No pleasantries. Let’s see what the Lordling wants… and let the real fun begin.

Hena did not know yet that he entirely wanted to do business with this pirate. He knew of him, assuming it was a man as he had not been told otherwise, and while Hena had no problem with women doing jobs that were normally for men, he would not place his cards on a pirate captain being a woman.
He had heard of this person’s reputation none the less, and he wouldn’t be surprised to learn that they were one of the ones who had taken out a trade ship of the H’Sheifas or two. Such was a risk of doing business on the seas. A certain amount of loss was to be expected, whether it was to pirate or the weather or what ever else might be out on those waters.
He approached the tavern that they had arranged to meet at, he had been assured that discretion would be used. Either way, the Lord approached with a group of guards, armed to the teeth, with others hidden in the area should they need back up. He was not taking chances with a filthy pirate.
Akhenaten scoffed as he entered and a man with a deep voice spoke immediately.
“I am not looking for anyone to do a job. Any idiot off the street could ‘do a job.’” He mocked, brown eyes studying the man who sat, and the woman behind the bar who seemed to be listening with her back to him, observing but not participating. Interesting. Perhaps this man was not who he seemed. But Hena would continue to address him until the situation changed.
“I am looking for a partner, one who wishes to see their pockets lined with more money than they can hold.” He stated, arms crossing, his guards stood carefully behind him, ready to strike at a moments notice if anyone made a move.
“If that is not you and your crew, then there are plenty more out there who would take such a prospect.” He said, a challenge in the air. If this particular pirate was not smart enough to see the opportunity that the H’Sheifa Lord presented, then he would find one who was.
He was not intimidated by pirates, there wasn’t much in the world that intimidated the egotistical Lord Akhenaten. With good reason. He had enough money to buy all the protection or assassins he could ever hope for. There was little that would stand in his way of expanding his wealth either.
“I am not here to play games. I need someone long term. Stolen goods from merchant ships, bought at a discount price. An ongoing contract if you will. In exchange, on top of money I can offer much in terms of the connections I hold in Egypt.” He stated, plain and simple. Either they would be interested in not only his money, but also his political power, or they would not and he would move on to the next less than legal connection until he found someone capable and willing.

Akila had contacts from all over. She had people in Greece, Judea, and of course, Egypt. They ranged from slavers who just needed new stock, to people looking for something more sinister, like poisons, to… merchants who wanted to shave some expenses. Despite what many were led to believe, there was more to piracy than stabbing and smuggling illegal goods. In fact, a lot of the time what Akila had in her ship was legal. It simply wasn’t… taxed. Don’t get her wrong she did steal, and she did it quite well but it was more nuanced than that.
Which made this more interesting. If he wanted goods at a discount, Akila could easily offer that. He wouldn’t be the first rich person going to the crew looking for just that… but he was among the most powerful. The little heir, how intriguing. What could Akila get from him?
And the answer was obvious. For years there was something that had bothered Akila. It was a thorn at her side, really, more than anything. The Library of Alexandria. Alexandria used to be a place ripe with crime. After all, it was a port city and a large melting pot of cultures. It made the city more unique, vibrant. But as the library got underway more scholars found their way to Alexandria. And while, yes, they were good people to sell the occasional book or stolen artifact to, Akila’s old clientele all but moved onto different pastures. The increase in the number of guards found in Alexandria had become… irritating.
The longer the war went on, and the longer there was a decrease in trade between Egypt and Greece, Alexandria was bound to suffer. But it didn’t hurt to… nudge it along a little. It would be interesting, really, to see what the little Lordling could do. In fact, it would even be fun. Not to mention a chance to see what use the man could continue to have for her in the future. His morals were questionable, reaching out to pirates for stolen goods. But how questionable… well, it would behoove Akila to find out.
Khalid had gone to speak again, but when Akila brought out a third cup, pouring herself that drink, he remained silent. A gentle hand on top of Khalid’s was enough to tell him that she was ready to take over. He had moved from the chair and Akila went around the bar to replace him. “Many that might take the offer, but none would be even half as good as me and my crew.” Akila’s finger traced the rim of her drink, dark eyes now examining the man at this closer angle. He was handsome, dangerously so, and with the already apparent ego evident by his words, he seemed a man that could cause trouble.
Good.
“I can get you the goods you need, little Lordling. But if you want them, you’re gonna have to do me a favor…” Her finger tapped on the rim. She crossed her legs, leaning back against the chair. “One that, if done right, should benefit us both.”

Hena couldn’t say he was entirely surprised when the woman took over and started talking instead of the man. He had thought she had been more than just some woman at the tavern, but he was addressing who ever addressed him. He listened as she spoke, doing his best not to snap at her for asking for a favour when he had offered through his connections already. But there was no reason for him to lose it, not yet at least. She was simply working on stating her terms, at least that’s what he told himself. His anger had been becoming harder to control lately, and most of the time it was something he had to actively work on.
“What is it then? This favour you require? I will not agree until I know the full terms.” He stated. He wasn’t about to just agree to anything without knowing what he was agreeing to. He wasn’t dumb enough to just agree because she said that she could get him what he wanted.
“I also want to see the quality of the goods you can offer me before I agree to anything long term.” He added on. He wasn’t about to sell low quality goods, whether they were stolen or not. If she wanted the long term deal with the Lord and the connections that he held, she would need to prove that what she said was true, and she would need to prove that she and her crew were the best for what he was looking for.
He had no issues finding someone else if she was not able to provide what he wanted.
The deal would be extra good for him, because if she hit the right ships for him, she would take out his competition and would kill their supply lines while his thrived. There was a reason he was going to a pirate of all people for his goods. He could easily find them some where else if he really wanted, but the prospect of cheaper prices meant more profit, and cutting off his competition meant he would be the top supplier.
He took the cup of wine that had been poured for him, and took a drink as a sign of trust. Hopefully they could build a bond between them, one of business and one where they could trust each other, or at least as much as either of them could trust. He would never truly trust her, nor did he think that she would ever trust him fully. But some semblance of it could be built upon working together.
Assuming that she could provide what he wanted, and he could provide what ever favour it was she wished from him.
“Your name?” He asked, his eyes trained specifically on the woman. He didn’t care if the name was fake, he just wanted something to be able to associate with her, Not that he planned on discussing their deal with anyone, but for his own use, a name would be good.

He didn’t look surprised when Akila replaced Khalid. That was a good thing. He was perceptive, and he wasn’t an idiot. Most would discount Akila. Some had even sputtered when they’ve come to realize she was the captain. They’d stare at her with their mouth hung open like some fish, until they come to their senses and try to then ask for her services. The man, on the other hand, didn’t even blink. He sipped the wine and continued the conversation.
This made her that much more interested in what he had to say.
“You can see my wares, that won’t be a problem,” Akila responded with a wave of her hand. She had quality wares from quality ships. She didn’t make her money off of any old wares. She was a good pirate and had a good eye. He won’t have an issue with what she had to offer.
But it was what he had to offer that interested Akila. She stopped circling her finger on the rim to take a sip of the wine. “Have you ever been to Alexandria? It’s a beautiful coastal city. A melting pot of different people. And it’s a… profitable city, or at least it was. There’s a little black market tucked in a cove not far from the limits. It was a convenient place once upon a time. But since the library has neared completion and an increase of guards have made their way to Alexandria the city had begun to… clean up.”
Now maybe her pirates could bring fire to the library. Maybe they could destroy all it’s progress. That wouldn’t necessarily help the cause though. The project would start anew, with increased protection. No, destroying it wouldn’t do. This would need a more… subtle hand. And for it to be trouble that wouldn’t link back to the pirates.
“You want stolen goods? Alexandria is the main hub to smuggle it in. It’s ripe with opportunity. My favor? Cause trouble for that library. Lessen the number of guards patrolling the city and docks. Play your little politics game. An easier time for my crew would mean more money in your pocket.” And more money in her’s.
Really, though, this all seemed to be just a fun time. Could she make do without Alexandria? Probably. She had done well thus far. But a weaker Alexandria still meant very good things for criminals in Egypt. So in this arrangement, all parties had a chance of winning.
“Akila,” She finally answered when it came to her name. Sure, it was her real name. She wasn’t the only Akila in Egypt, and she didn’t much care what the Lordling did with it. She didn’t supply the of Edwa, nor did she do the fanciful Songstress of the Sea. She didn’t need anything other than Akila. “Is this of interest to you? If not, then I suppose you can go find another pirate.” Akila lifted her shoulders and dropped them. “But as I said, you won’t find any as good as me.”

He didn’t look surprised when Akila replaced Khalid. That was a good thing. He was perceptive, and he wasn’t an idiot. Most would discount Akila. Some had even sputtered when they’ve come to realize she was the captain. She seemed confident about the quality of what she could provide him, which he took as a good sign. Either that or she was completely oblivious to the fact that her product was terrible. But he would assume that she was competent and could provide him what he was looking for. Either way he would inspect the goods himself the first time, and then have someone who could do it for him. Likely Callidora.
She started talking about Alexandria and the guards there and it clicked immediately what she would want from him. He wasn’t sure exactly what he would do to assist her with that, but he was fairly certain he would be able to assist. He had money, he had title, he had ways of getting things done. He was confident that one way or another he would be able to do what she wanted so that their deal could go through. Plus, it was a lot easier of a task than he had been expecting, so that was a nice surprise.
“Done.” He said, agreeing to the deal at least for now. “If your goods are as quality as you say, and not stolen from my own family, you have yourself a deal.” He said, throwing that little stipulation in there. There was no point in selling goods that were stolen from his own family after all, that would be counter productive.
“I think our business relationship will prove very profitable for both of us. As long as you do not double cross me, this deal can see us both weighed down with gold and opportunity.” Hena stated. He did not expect a pirate to be fully truthful and not move in the shadows, he full expected her to be sneaky and underhanded, but as long as there was no sort of betrayal that involved himself or his operation, he could care less. This was about money, securing a richer future for his family name and ensuring that he would be able to continue on with his lavish lifestyle for as long as he lived.
He finished off the cup of wine that had been poured for him.
“Shall we discuss terms then? I have yet to fully build business, but I know the demand.” He stated, growing up in a merchant family meant that he knew the ways of the markets well, and he knew the changes in demand, what would sell well and what would never sell. He also had his connections to keep him updated with the ebb and flow of the market.
“The more foreign the goods are that you are able to procure for me, the more I will pay for them. Things from Lands Afar, trinkets, cloth, spices. What ever it is, the further it originates from the better.” He stated, he knew the market for foreign goods was a big one, not only in Egypt, but he would also be able to sell it to contacts who would then take it to Greece to sell it as well. Either way, very profitable.

Alexandria was just the beginning. If he proved his worth to the girl and took care of the library and the guard problem, then a whole new world would open up for the pair. Alexandria was key into getting hot goods into Egypt quickly. Should that be under control, then the pair would be making riches far beyond what he expected.
But it would be a good test to see what he could really do. Was he confident or was he cocky? He may have power, but did he have the brains to use that power effectively? Akila was interested to see what it was that he was capable of doing. If he impressed her, then they could potentially do some real big things together.
… and not stolen from my own family. Akila could not help but smirk at that little addition. “Stolen from your own family? I wouldn’t dream of it.” Honestly if he paid well enough, then she would ignore the H’Shiefa trading ships. It wouldn’t be worth the risk pissing off the man that could do Akila some serious good. Though if he didn’t care that was another story. Even if he didn’t buy his own family’s items, it didn’t mean there weren’t others out there ready to pay for H’Shiefa goods.
The more foreign goods you are able to procure for me, the more I will pay for them. Oh, how lovely. Akila had another large client in Egypt. They had asked her to procure children from Lands Afar to use as their slaves. The more foreign they were, the more they were worth. She spent a lot of her time abroad, and rarely would she fill her ship with just slaves. So, if she already had an interested buyer for her goods she got when she made that trip, the better her profit was. How efficient, just how she liked it.
“I will be leaving Thebes in five days. I have business… elsewhere.” Akila said flippantly. She stood up, having finished the rest of her wine as well. As she stood, Khalid had rose too. He gathered his spear, glancing at the guards for only a second before returning to Akila’s side. “I’m docked just south of the city. You are welcome aboard to see the items yourself. Otherwise send a name of your liaison should they be the one to check the merchandise.”
“What I have should be enough to get this… started.” Akila continued. “But should you want more, then I expect progress to be made in Alexandria first. We’re in war now, so an easy port to go in and out of would be… very valuable.” Very valuable indeed. “You can contact me the same way you did before. I’ll have the goods prepared.”
With that, Akila stepped away from the bar. She didn’t even glance at the guards as she walked by. This… was far more interesting than Akila had expected.

Hena wanted to make sure it was clear, that his family was to be off limits. Though he didn’t get along with his father, and he was setting up this whole thing to have his own trade contacts and his own empire outside of his fathers, it benefited Hena to have his father continue to pull in as much money as he could until his son took over the family. The more money his father made, the more gathered for when he fully took over. H’Sheifa wealth was his own wealth. And he was sure what ever deal he had to make with her to lay off his families ships would be less than they would make with reduced attacks on their trade ships.
He rose as she did, not thinking she was about to attack, but recognizing that this meeting was likely coming to an end. He was fine with that, there wasn’t much more to discuss until the two of them had something to provide each other for their side of the deal.
“If I do not visit myself, it will be the head of my merchants, a Greek woman named Callidora.” He said. There would be no one else he would trust to meet this woman and not tell of the less than legal ways he’d be getting the goods, nor would he trust anyone else to properly inspect the goods to ensure that they were of the quality Akila promised.
He nodded a little as she said that she would need progress in Alexandria before she would provide more goods. He would hold up his end of the deal, ideas already popping up in his head. He would need to sit down on his own and he would need to figure out his exact plan and the steps needed to bring it to fruition.
He waited there for her to leave, not wishing to follow immediately behind her. He stayed for a few minutes, finishing off his cup of wine before he too took his leave, guards close in tow. His mind was racing, but he was leaving rather pleased with the whole situation. It had gone well, and with any luck both himself and his new connection would find their pockets lined with a lot more money than they expected.
First, he needed to get the ball rolling on his end of the deal. And so he headed back home, to figure out how to do just that.
