She had been doing well so far, she thought, at keeping her feelings bottled up and stashed away. There were times late at night when she laid beside Achilleas, that thoughts of Emilios crept in, almost able to see him in the shadow-darkened figure laying at her side. But when those thoughts came in, she shoved them viciously away, desperately compartmentalizing everything she felt in a nearly futile bid to keep herself grounded and sane.
Since Achilleas went to war, those thoughts were harder and harder to keep at bay, every time she was in his brother’s presence drawing them back out against her will. Theodora had tried to convince herself that what they had was nothing more than a first crush, a childish fantasy that they both knew could never come true. But now, after this…
She knew just how profoundly she had been lying to herself.
That kiss had shattered the little bottle she stuffed it all in, the feel of his arms around her drawing everything forth that she had ever felt for the man who held her in such a tender embrace. It had never just been a crush, despite the lies she tried to comfort herself with. What they had was real, and all of this only served to remind her of why she had tried so hard to lock it all away. No matter what she felt for Achilleas, no matter that it was him she was bound to, what they had could never be the same as what she had shared with Emilios. They were made for each other, and even if she denied it, that wasn’t going to change.
But it didn’t matter. None of that mattered. Her life was pledged to Achilleas, even if her heart still belonged to Emilios.
Tearing herself away from the comfort of his embrace was hard, harder than it should have been, but at least he seemed to be in agreement. They couldn’t do this. Achilleas didn’t deserve it.
She didn’t dare to look at him, nor to speak, as they walked back to where they had left their horses, busying herself with untying Calista’s reins and pulling them back over her head. Attempting to calm the erratic pace of her heart, Theodora vaulted herself up onto her mare’s back and ran a soothing hand down her neck. Though, whether it was meant to soothe her or the horse remained to be seen.
Only looking over when Emilios trotted his stallion in front of her with a challenge of ‘rematch’ on his lips, Theodora felt a grim sort of smile tug at her own. “You’ll be eating my dust soon enough,” she returned with a valiant show of false bravado, hoping her voice wouldn’t crack as she passed him by.
Spurring Calista into a gallop as the trees rushed past them both, the Queen forced her mind to clear, to focus only on the feel of hoofbeats shaking the ground and wind tangling her hair. It was better for them both if they just forgot about today, put it behind them and continued on as they had before—quietly resigned to their fates.
But some boxes, once opened, aren’t so easily closed…
