Silanos wasn’t even really interested in shopping. He was tired and sweaty and hot, his back ached and his right shoulder was killing him from taking a rough landing earlier. But he’d diverted via the market just to irritate the loutish guard who’d been assigned as his bodyguard-see babysitter- as Daxos was on leave. This one was grumpy as hell and the Valaoritis Lord was taking some perverse pleasure in seeing how much further the man’s brows could lower before he was squinting.
And so the nobleman wandered through the stalls, stopping here and there to pretend to be interested in something, deliberately engaging the stallholders in conversation. He flipped a couple of coin to a pretty snake charmer, but didn’t stay too long because even knowing the viper would be without its fangs, he wasn't fond of snakes.
Suppressing the shudder, he walked on to the next stall, rolling his shoulder which was starting to stiffen up. It was getting really old being dumped on his ass in the sand multiple times a day, and yet seemed to be an integral part of Maleos’ plans for him. Fucking idiot.
Scowling at the thought and at the surly presence of the Captain’s man trailing along behind him, Sil almost walked right past the dolls. Almost, until one of the little Plaggonas caught his eye, with its pale painted features and wild cloud of dark hair. He smiled a quiet, secret sort of smile to himself and called over to the stall keep, a weathered old woman stooped low over her goods.
“Hey, how much for this one?” The Lord pointed towards the dark-haired doll, and when the old crone named her price, he rolled his eyes but handed over the coin anyway. It was a trifle, but surely more than twice what she would have charged a commoner. Silanos surveyed the doll, and then handed it off to the man trailing him. “If you’re going to follow me, might as well make yourself useful and carry this” He said in an offhand manner, not pausing for the man’s outrage to be made known. He might be forced to be as one of them within the walls of the barracks, but Silanos was still a Lord, and walked the walk as he had always done.
Which was why he was shocked when the man let the doll fall to the ground, where it rolled a little to land by his feet. “What in Hades do you think you’re doing?” he snapped. “Pick that up and carry it like you were told to”
But the soldier merely lifted a brow “ Don’t take orders from you, Captain says. It's the Baron, the Lieutenant or the Captain himself. So carry it yourself”
Silanos could have throttled him, and his hands curled into fists at his sides, his frustration at the fact that he actually couldn’t throttle him, because the man was built like a stone wall and could possibly crush him with his little finger, making the whole thing worse. With a glare so fierce it would have flayed flesh from the bones from lesser men, the Valaoritis Lord bent to snatch up the doll, only as he stood upright, his hip caught the edge of the next stall, jostling it and all of its wares.
If the table had been less flimsy, or Silanos’ movements less driven by frustration, then there might have been a different outcome. As it was, the pictures that were so neatly propped for display all tipped over, and the Lord gave a muttered curse that would have seen his mother’s hair curl had she heard.
“Fucks sake” he grumbled, reaching to try and right one of the pictures. His hand paused when he looked up into the face of the stallholder, his scowl relenting almost immediately as he found himself looking upon a girl. A very pretty girl.
“My apologies” The switch from irritated to smoothly ingratiating was almost instant, Sil even cracking a smile for the dark-haired girl. He forgot the idiot soldier he’d be so annoyed with and instead glanced from the girl back to the table of paintings he’d managed to topple. “These are very good. Do you know the artist?”

Today was market day.
Adelpha could only spend so many days in her beach house before she needed to collect some coin and buy herself more food and supplies. She couldn't ask for any from her parents. Although her mother would give some willingly, her father would only tell her to join the army and earn her coin with honour as he had done. But he just didn't understand her, nor her pacifist nature. Besides, she could better wield a paintbrush than a weapon.
But it wasn't as though he cared. So it was decided more than a year ago that she was better off on her own to fend for herself.
And fend for herself she did. Adelpha's artwork helped to fund her life. And although she wasn't super rich, she wasn't exactly poor either.
Her table at the market was decorated in such a fashion as to draw the eye. It was the colour schemes and shapes within the paintings that she used. Most people were of the same mind and certain colours caught their eye more than others. Red was one of those. Many walked her table from right to left, so she kept her redder paintings on the right, followed by purples and blues.
And just as she was getting the last of them set up, Sil bumped into her table. It wasn't just a gentle nudge either. The table lifted off the floor and the paintings fell over like a house of cards. Adelpha gasped and saved what she could, yet the majority of the canvases fell over. It took a moment before she looked up at Sil, who's quick shift in emotions caused her to raise a brow for a brief moment. No doubt he came from a wealthy family.
"Yes, I do know the artist. She is me." Though she didn't take the compliment as anything else but a formality. "You're not hurt, are you?" Adelpha spoke as she started to remakr her display.

The young lord was making some token effort to help right the paintings that had tumbled over, pausing to look over one here or there, though he looked up again at the pretty girl when she claimed to be the artist, looking vaguely surprised. Huh.
“Hmmm, I’m not sure” Sil replied when she enquired if he was hurt, affecting a look of concern as he peered down at himself. “Do you want to take a look? I could be bleeding.” He raised his eyebrows at her before laughing at her expression and stepping in a little closer. After the day he’d had, this was something he was comfortable doing, and it was like a balm to his frazzled nerves, a Nice bit of flirting never hurt anyone and she was a hell of a lot prettier than the oafish guard who was so getting on his nerves. Still clutching the plaggonna that had caused so much destruction, he braced his other hand on the tabletop. The Lord didn’t seem to have any issue with the fact he was holding on to a child’s toy, rather turned very bright blue but tired-looking eyes back to the stall owner.
He was tall enough that she had to tilt her face up to look at him properly, face unlined and boyish still but with dark shadows painted beneath his eyes and a pallor that made him look like he needed a good nap or perhaps to spend a little more time out in the sun. Sil would have agreed with the first part but had spent quite enough time outdoors for his liking on that particular day. Being hauled from his bed at the crack of dawn and forced to submit to Maleos’ idea of training was not his idea of fun, but the young lord had been left under no illusion as to how much say he had in the matter. His brother had made sure of that.
So this, this was a gentle reprieve from the rest of his day, and the trip to the market seemed worth it already, and for more reason than just irritating the soldier who trailed him. The man stood back now, looking bored and fed up with his young charge. He wasn’t thrilled with his babysitting duty either, the lord already having proven he was going to behave like the brat he’d been warned he was. It was a relief for him to that the nobleman had found a new focus, even if he had to stand around a bit longer.
The man in question called the girl’s attention back to him. “I’m Silanos,” he said, flashing her a grin. “ And you are...clearly very talented, but what’s your name?”

Adelpha was quite certain that Silanos was making fun of her. That was proven more evident as he laughed. Yet perhaps he wasn't meaning it in a cruel way.
Maybe.
The man was clearly of noble birth. He had come to the market with what appeared to be a guard of some kind. So it was probably safe to say that his attitude came from a life of privlege. Of course Adelpha was no pauper, yet she wasn't a noble either. Instead she was someone inbetween.
After the paintings were all righted again and set up as before, she looked up at him as he leaned on the table. He was handome in his own way, yet she had the feeling that he knew that very well and used it to his advantage. That was something that she had to keep in mind.
"My name is Adelpha. Nice to meet you, Silanos. Are you shopping for your little daughter?" She pointed towards the toy his held in his hand.

She wasn’t quite sure to make of him, that much was clear and Silanos thought was sort of endearing in its own way. So he waited for her to set to right all of her work, toying with the doll in his hands. There was no urgency in this after all. Why not linger a while and talk to pretty girl? The Lord watched her as she moved around to reorder the display and made no attempt to hide it. He didn’t recognise her which convinced him she couldn’t be much for the taverns of the city. Or..and this wasn’t entirely unlikely..that he wasn’t always sober enough to remember faces too well. It was a thing that had come to bite him in the ass more than once, but he was reasonably he didn’t know this girl.
Laughing at her question, he glanced down at the doll in his hand and then back up to Adelpha. “Oh fuck no.! It’s for a friend. Her hair is kind of crazy and frizzy like this, I don’t know it just made me laugh.”
He turned the toy over in his hand and eyed her curiously. “Do you have children?” Because Silanos really wasn’t sure he could be bothered if she had a beast of a husband lurking around the corner with a couple of kids. He was aching already and didn’t think he had it in him to make a quick escape. The girl was attractive but not worth that much effort.
Switching his attention back to the paintings, he looked over one, a seascape that had a familiar rock formation in the foreground and the lord glanced at the girl curiously again. “I know that beach” he motioned towards the picture. “These are pretty good. I’m impressed”
He wasn’t saying it just as flattery, though that fell from his lips as easily as anything in such situations. They were interesting. That their painter was easy on the eye was even more interesting as far as Silanos was concerned. If he wasn’t so fucked off with Timaeus he might have bought his brother a painting as a gift, but the mark from where the man had struck him still showed on his face, and the accompanying words still smarted.
Dismissing the idea and the unpleasantness of recounting that quarrel, Sil instead looked at Adelpha again. “Are you from Midas?”

Dismissing the idea and the unpleasantness of recounting that quarrel, Sil instead looked at Adelpha again. “Are you from Midas?”
"Well,...that's very nice of you for your friend." Silanos was quite the puzzle. But it wasn't really for her to solve it. There was no doubt that he had a long line of people wanting to do just that.
He turned her question right back at her and for a moment she was caught off guard. Adelpha dropped her gaze slightly, tucking some of her hair behind her left ear as she shifted her weight on her feet. "No, no children. Not even close."
Thankfully the subject was changed to that of her artwork. For that she had a lot more confidence than she did about talking of her personal life. She gave him a small smile to go with his compliment. "Why thank you. I try to capture the beauty of the world and the way that I see it. There's enough tragedy as it is. It's nice to look at something beautiful every once in a while."
Silanos once again returned the conversation to Adelpha as opposed to her art. Was he just stalling or something. She gave his guard a momentary glance. "I haven't ventured out of the area here. But one day I might travel far and wide to study and learn other art forms." She'd have to save up enough first, and prepare herself for the long walk that such a journey would entail.

“I am nice” Silanos replied with a throwaway smile. And he was, for the most part. At least to those who weren’t insisting he do something other than what he wanted to be doing. The girl - Adelpha- he reminded himself, didn’t volunteer much about her situation, though he decided ‘not even close’ was positive. The change between answering a question about herself versus a question about her painting was quite eye-opening though, and the lord made a note of it.
He kept his gaze very steady on the woman as he nodded in agreement with her sentiment. “You’re right, it is” There was humour in his voice like he was teasing her again, the young man trying to get her to relax a little in his company. Of course, it didn’t help that he had that idiot guard trailing him. Sil frowned a little as he saw Adelpha’s attention shift to the other man. Yeah, that was cramping his style. What the fuck did Tim think he was going to do on the walk between the manor and the barracks? Sil let himself feel outraged for a moment before he conceded that actually, had the oaf not been shadowing him, he probably would have headed to a tavern to drown his sorrows. And that was against Tim’s stupid rules. How he hated it when his brother was right. The young Lord sighed.
“Oh...don't worry about him. He’s just there to make sure I don’t get into any trouble. Or have any FUN” Silanos tossed the last word out a little louder with a dark look toward the soldier but then was all smiles again for Adelpha. “But more fool him, I’m having fun right now”
Given that the most words he’d gotten out of the girl had been when it came to her artwork, Sil decided to continue down that route.
“Which is your favourite?” he pondered, directing the girl’s attention to her work whilst he, in turn, admired her in profile. “I’m always in awe of those with artistic talent, as I possess none.”

Adelpha was quite glad that there was a table between them. Silanos was standing close enough as it is. She wasn't used to that, especially as of late. That was a part of growing up. Her friends had their own lives, a couple had gone off to war. Adelpha was an only child. Given her stubborness at not joining the army to fight and bring the family honour, she didn't really see her parents often either.
But Adelpha wasn't bothered by her isolation. She wasn't a chatterbox like some ladies were, nor was she a part of any gossip rings. It was probably a lot better that way.
As he informed her of his guard, she couldn't help but give an amused smile. No doubt her Father would relish at such an idea, not to protect her or to keep her out of trouble, but to see to it that she follows the life path that he wanted her to have. "You have a habit of getting into trouble, then?" No doubt that question would get him to laugh. At least it was a pleasant kind and not some hawkish snorts and weezes.
But back to her artwork. Adelpha looked at the pieces she had out on the table. Most were landscapes of the ocean and beaches, a few were of Clochis itself in different stages of daylight. "I like this one." She gestured towards one of the beach paintings consisting of a sandy shoreline with rocky outcroppings. Trees dotted the area as well. The water itself was calm and inviting. " This is the view that I see everyday. It's home. But my favourite piece I could never sell. Even when it finally gets finished." Adelpha was painting a mural on one of the walls inside her home. It was of a forest and a pathway in the center. The image came in a dream and she just had to bring it to life.

If the young lord was aware of how his new friend was grateful for the enforced barrier between them, he made no show of it. Indeed Sil seemed perfectly at ease talking to her, there was no sign of nerves. Though why would there be? He was a nobleman, and her just a stall keep, albeit in an uncommonly pretty one. If anything Silanos was almost encouraged by the fact she seemed a little of the shy side. It made it into a challenge, a game to see if he could get her to relax a little. Each smile was like a reward, each laugh a progress marker. Come on, sweet thing.
And she was warming to him, he thought, given the teasing edge her own question took, and Sil blew out a breath at it, somewhere between a laugh and a sigh. He glanced at the guard.
“A habit? No. Or yes. Dependent on who you ask. Today I’m being good” A flash of a smile. “ What about you? You ever make time for trouble, or too busy with all of this” He gestured vaguely towards her paintings. When she went on to point out her favourite, Silanos turned his head to look at it, dutifully admired the scene before he looked back at Adelpha when she went on to say it wasn’t actually her favourite. Whatever that mysterious painting was, apparently she’d be keeping it close to her always.
Silanos couldn’t help the little derisive snort that escaped at the comment equating work with talent. What was [i[with[/i] everyone and work? Surely the whole thing about talent was that you just had it, or didn’t? He had a talent for avoiding work, and he was quite happy with that arrangement. It was a pity that everyone else couldn’t just stay out of it. He didn’t correct her though, just more..ignored that part of the conversation and moved on.
“You live near the beach then? Outside of the city?”
He was beginning to get bored and had realised a flaw in this scenario. One: he had the stupid guard with him, and technically, was supposed to be heading home. Two: This girl had all her paintings and what have you and was hardly about to leave them to go anywhere with him. He sighed. Wasted effort.
“ Can you wrap up one of the beach ones?” he said. He could send it to Eubocris, to his mother. She liked the sea and yet was about as far from it as could be in the gorge. Never mind that he owed her an apology anyway, after how he’d left.

"Well outside of me not bowing dowm to the wishes of my father, there is no other trouble for me to get into." And that was the truth of it. And besides, Adelpha didn't mind being alone. It helped to improve her art. Yet she had the feeling that Sil wouldn't do so well though.
"I live on the beach, yes. It's nice and quiet. Perfect for what I need." Every artist needs to be able to focus on their craft. It was difficult to do that with a lot of distractions.
Sil then gave a look that she knew all too well. Boredom. There had been many, friends included, that also shared that same look. One had even fallen asleep within minutes of being in her company, so she knew that she had that affect. At least she was never in the middle of something importang to have to worry about it.
"Which beach painting to you prefer?" There were a variety of different types, each at various stages of the day and weather conditions.

Sil pulled a bit of a face at her words. She’d been missing out on life if she thought that was the only trouble to be found. “You’re not looking hard enough,” he said with a shrug and a wink. In other circumstances, he might have offered to open her eyes a little to exactly the kind of trouble she could get into, the best kind but Silanos was having to walk the path of the straight and narrow for the time being. He could admit to himself the reason but it didn’t make it any less miserable.
Living on the beach though? That didn’t sound so bad. “Seems like it,” he said, with a cursory wave towards her paintings. She certainly had enough inspiration to draw from it appeared, judging by the many seascapes.
When he’d made his decision to send one to Eubocris, the lord paid a little more heed to the paintings, looking over each one with an appraising gaze. He tried to picture which his Mother might like the most, in the end settling on one which was easily recognisable as Colchis’ rocky shoreline. “That one,” he said, pointing toward it. “Can you have it wrapped and sent to my home in the upper levels?” He wasn’t about to lug it all the way up the hill, and his shadow had already refused to carry a fucking doll, so he didn't bother asking about a painting. Besides, if the girl brought it herself, well that wouldn't be unpleasant now, would it?

Adelpha furrowed her brows in thought, puzzling over the very notion that she wasn't looking hard enough for getting herself in a bit of trouble. What could she do? Toss some paint around? Already she was being a horrible daughter in more ways that one. She was quite certain that at some point her Father was going to cease speaking to her altogether. But hopefully her mother wouldn't.
"And what kinds of trouble do you get yourself into?" Oh wait! Adelpha mentally chided herself for oversteppjng her bounds. "I mean, don't answer that. It's not my place or my business." She lowered her head a little and then began restraightening the paintings, not that they really needed it, but that she just needed to redirect the attention away from herself.
Silanos was hopefully distracted enough with trying to pick out a painting. Her anxiety rose a little as he seemed to be taking his time. But finally he had chosen one to purchase. Adelpha set it aside from the others, that way it wouldn't be purchased by another. However his request had caught her a little offguard. Her movements slowed as she contemplated on her own schedule and how she could fit a visit to the upper levels within it. "I could...bring it to your home after the market is closed. But which home is yours?" Silanos wasn't going to try to trick her, now would he? Is this the kind of trouble that he would cause; tricking people into going to the wrong houses?
Without knowing people it was very difficult to be able to hazard a guess as to what they would do towards strangers. There was a playful glint in Sil's eyes that Adelpha wasn't entirely sure that she could guess it's meaning. Perhaps one day she'll learn.

Sil gave a little laugh at Adelpha’s question, surprised at how bold she was in asking it. She seemed to realise herself the moment it left her mouth, stumbling to take it back but the lord waved a hand. “The kind that gets you stuck with a babysitter,” he said with a dark glance toward the soldier who just stared back. “But also the fun kind. I’m sort of hobbled right now but I’d be more than happy to show you sometime?” Sil returned his gaze to the pretty painter and raised an eyebrow. Maybe all hope wasn’t lost.
When he’d made his selection and dug out enough coin, the lord let his fingers brush deliberately against Adelpha’s as he handed it over. “ I’ll write it down for you,” he said through a smile. “Draw you a map too if it helps”
There was no gain to be had for him in giving her false information. He wanted that painting after all. Sourcing a bit of parchment and a stylus, he bent over the stall to scribble down a few directions in a sloping, haphazard scrawl. “Here,” he said pushing the paper toward her. He wasn’t certain if his current confinement precluded visitors, but decided to try his luck anyway. “If you ask for Lord Silanos”
Again with that smile that was a little sure of itself, the gaze that was not at all shy in its perusal of her. “I’ll see you later then, Adelpha the painter” He backed off a couple of paces, still with that insolent little grin in place and then turned, disappearing into the throngs of people browsing in the agora.

Adelpha wasn't still quite certain as to what trouble Sil would get himself into that he'd end up with a guard. Perhaps he was a bit of a thief, or a prankster or some other such thing. It was hard to guess given that they came from two vastly different lifestyles. "Perhaps some day..." She let her words just hang in the air, almost as though she was just thinking aloud.
His fingers touched her own and instantly Adelpha felt her cheeks flush. Was it just an accident? It wasn't just a quick touch either, it was more. Her eyes met his and the answer to her question was right there. He did it on purpose in a bid to test the waters, so to speak.
Yet she couldn't help but watch him as he scribbled the directions to his home down. She studied how he held his body, the movements of his muscles and the layering of his fabric. It was the kind of details that most artists did on instinct, usually without being aware that it caused them to openly stare at people. "Th-thank you, Lord Silanos. I will see you then." At least she had some time. Adelpha brushed some of her hair behind her ear, watching as he departed. She took the coin and the parchment, placing them into a pouch for safe keeping and continued the rest of her day, tending to the other customers that approached.
By evening, Adelpha had packed everything up from the market and had it all safely stored at her home. All except for one. That was the painting that Silanos had purchased. With due care she followed the directions he had given her, however his chicken scratches were a bit hard to make out. So when she happened upon a large house Adelpha knocked on the door. "Is this the residence of Lord Silanos?" she inquired the person that answered the door. Hopefully she had gotten the right address.

The door to the house was opened by a woman, hair greying at the temples and face lined with her years. She didn’t seem particularly surprised to find an unknown young lady standing upon the stoop, and when Adelpha asked for the Lord Silanos her eyes narrowed just a touch.
“Aye, it is. But Lord Silanos isn’t allowed….”
“Isn’t allowed out, yes yes, but that doesn’t mean no one is allowed in, Esmerelda so stop worrying so much and let poor…” There was a pause as the Lord, who had quite clearly forgotten her name appeared behind the older woman and grinned at Adelpha “...I’m sorry, it’s been several hours and I’ve quite misplaced your name. Anyway, come in.” Silanos pulled the door wider, paying no heed to the slightly vexed expression of the housekeeper and beckoned Adelpha inside.
“It’s a gift for Lady Periella, so Timaeus can hardly complain about me having that delivered,” he said blithely as he wandered away from the door expecting his guest to follow him. “Bring the girl some wine will you?”
Sil went into a room just off the big hallway Adelpha had been admitted into, flung himself carelessly onto one of the klines there and then winced as if the motion had cost him somewhat. He felt a little like he’d been run over by a carriage, but he’d sort of gotten used to the feeling after the past couple of days. Waving Adelpha over to sit on one of the other available seats he yawned widely and pushed a hand through his hair, sweeping the already rather dishevelled locks of dark hair aside. Having been forbidden from going out it was a novelty having someone to talk to other than the staff or whatever oink of a soldier Tim had following him about. Silanos had been alternating sulking in his room with amusing himself chatting to the staff, and he could tell that Esmeralda was getting tempted to whap him with for bothering the little blonde serving girl. She’d been with the Valaoritis family for years and was irritatingly over-familiar in that way. So yes, he could welcome whatshername's arrival.
“Better be the right one you’ve wrapped up there,” he said with a jerk of his head toward the bundle she held. “And you obviously found your way alright. Well done”
