Not for the first time in the last several weeks, the youngest daughter of the late king Irakles found herself alone and consumed with her thoughts. The last weeks of her life had been some of the hardest she'd ever had to face, losing her father and home within days of each other. It had all happened so horrifyingly fast; and even now the thought of it brought tears to her eyes. If she had been fond of cursing, she would have said some -- hell, she might do it anyway.
The reflection pool had become one of her favorite places since her return to the palati at Emilios' invitation. It had not been...entirely unexpected, seeing that he'd asked her to stay in the first place. She had not been able to say yes in good conscious to that offer, despite the temptation to stay where things were somewhat familiar. She hadn't been able to leave her mother and sister, both who were in the midst of similar feelings. She'd had to take care of her mother. Saying goodbye to her brother however, had been more difficult than she imagined.
Her mother had been the one to encourage her to come back to the palati. She had thought that perhaps Sara could be the way back to their life of comfort, that she could forge a strong enough bond to have some influence over her elder brothers. Somehow she couldn't see that, not really.
The young woman had waded in just past her ankles, holding up her chiton so that it did not get wet. Her sandals waited on the nearby shore for her return. She probably wouldn't dare to venture farther than this, for while the reflection pool was safer than the sea -- she was afraid of deep waters. She sloshed through the shallow ends of the pool, her reflection broken by the ripples she caused. If she believed the elders then this pool should reveal something and she wondered what her unclear reflection meant for her 'true nature'. Even when she stilled, worried, it didn't seem to stop shaking -- unable to be seen clearly.
She frowned at that.

Nikolias did not often visit this area because he usually felt it was the family's space to be by themselves. But with that said, he felt he needed it today for some reason. Water was so relaxing that he wondered why Poseidon was always thought of as being so angry all the time.
He smiled at the girl in greeting. " How are you? Do you care if I join you, Miss Sara?" Truthfully, he had never been sure just how to properly address Irakles' illegitimate children. They were not exactlynobility or royalty, were they, if they were illegitimate? Didn't one have to be legally added in in order to be able to have a title and inherit part of Irakles' worldly possessions? (well, enough for dowries, anyway) He was unsure if Irakles had allowed them that.
Nonetheless, regardless of being unsure whether or not the young ladies had a title, he liked them.
"It's relaxing, isn't it? The pool. Gazing into it, I often used to wonder as a child if one's image can give clues to their future," he admitted.
He actually still wondered that now. His future at the moment seemed uncertain enough, regardless of being third in line for the throne. Achilleas seemed to almost always misunderstand anything Nikolias said. What was it about people who were like him- blunt- that they could be perceived as insulting whether or not they always meant to be?
And Irakles' daughters, how were they coping? He missed Irakles, too. Most especially because Nikolias had found him easier to understand than the young king, but also because he had been his cousin. Social events without him were still all kinds of awkward. He had seemed to have such a commanding presence.

Her gaze lifted from the pool as a male voice interrupted her thoughts, finding Nikolias of Condos had joined her at its edge. He smiled at her, and reflexively she smiled back although it did not quite reach the bothered expression in her eyes -- bowing her head in deference to him. “Lord Nikolias.” She said, making her way back to the edge. She took a seat, hitching her chiton just high enough to keep the water off of it. She had not had too much interaction with him before, but he’d always been a pleasant man. Close in age to her father, but the similarities of them ended there in her mind. ”I am doing well.” She lied, thinking of her recent plight. What was she going to do about that?
”My brother, Emilios, has bestowed me with a kind gift to visit him for a few weeks.” She said, unsure if others would yet know why she was back in the palati. They had not been gone very long, just a few weeks. ”Are you well, Lord Nikolias? Her voice was soft and pleasant to the ear, and she reached up to tuck a long strand of her dark hair behind an ear. She usually wore it down, letting the waves fall just past her shoulders and today was no exception.
”What did you conclude?” She asked, truly curious. She was not sure he would tell her the truth if he had seen his future in the pool, but that wouldn’t keep her from asking the question. She was always like that, full of questions that sometimes had answers better left untold. ”Did you see anything then that resembles now?” She asked with a slight tilt of her head. She glanced back at the water, kicking her feet. ”Mine looks a bit murky.” She admitted, watching the ripples drift away until they were gone. ”A bit ominous, don’t you think?”
She shrugged, smiling brightly again as she looked away from the water. ”I think I’ll just have to find my own way.” She said, sounding more optimistic than she felt. ”Things will work out for me in the end, I just know it.” She shifted her weight, scooting higher onto the edge. ”How is everyone in your family? Everyone is well, I hope?” Her question was sincere, although she had little to do with the Condos on a regular basis. His children were more in line with Emilios and Achilleas’ ages, and she couldn’t think of a time when they had been playmates -- they had practically been grown before she’d been born.

"I am... coping, yes." He smiled softly, as if to say that he understood why she probably felt she could not be as honest as she might want to. Nikolias himself still worried about Emilios as much as anyone else- governing a country in the middle of war while the current king was gone and had been so recently crowned before that anyway was a mess. He was surprised Emilios might feel capable of having anyone visit at such a time- but perhaps it only showed that he might be trying to be kind. They had all had the same father, after all.
"And I have come to the same conclusion about my own reflection, at least lately." In Nikolias' case, his murky reflection also came with a surprising new dose of power as third in line for the throne, so perhaps it was not that his future was murky, but that he was struggling with how to best utilize the power now at his fingertips. As he had said to Achilleas previously, war or no war, if a king could not be kept present, it could at times call into question the entire government of the country which could not keep its king within its borders.
"I think we all have to find our own way at many stages in life," he offered. "New circumstances can be a challenge for anyone. But remember this- the ripples only blur one's reflection. It becomes clear again when they pass."
Just how long it would be before the ripples passed was what was unclear. But pass they would. Both of them would do well to believe that, and for her part, Sara did seem to be trying.
"Everyone is well. Perhaps I'll encourage Ophelia to pay you both a visit," he offered, referring to his youngest daughter. She was still a good bit older than the girls. but not so much that she could not presumably remember what it was like to have been their ages. And she tended to stay away from the political antics, by and large- something that might be a relief to them.

Coping? She thought, glancing curiously at him. She supposed that she had never stopped to consider the problems that others might have, so wrapped up in her own predicaments in a way that kept her from being fully present for others as they too must face the trials of life. She splashed gently, causing more ripples across the water as she leaned back on her palms to relax a little further.
Sara smiled in sympathy as he told her that he’d come to a similar conclusion about his own reflection, the murkiness surrounding them both seeming to be a heavy thing for their minds. She understood what he meant, and for a moment she found him almost relatable in a way. He had been catapulted up however, whereas she had been cast down. So perhaps, not so relatable. ”The gods will guide you.” She said in a tone that was quite motherly and soothing. ”Just continue to do your best and put your trust in them. Things will be fine.”
She turned back to the water, before pulling her feet from it completely. Her chiton had been saved from getting wet at all it seemed, as she dropped the hem to let it cover her ankles again. She walked with an air of naivety as she fetched her sandals from where they waited for her return. She smiled at his sage advice, and wondered briefly if her father would have given her the same should he have been the one here instead of Lord Nikolias.
She liked to have thought he would, though perhaps with less of the kind air that Nikolias had done so with. She could almost hear his gruff voice, and she thought that she might give anything for him to bark at her again. He had not been a kind or particularly loving father, but she’d loved him dearly anyway. ”I believe that too.” She said, her smile a little more wistful now. ”But I am glad that...it does not seem to be just the young who lose their way.” Her tone was slightly teasing, her blue eyes disappearing as she closed them to smile again. ”What strange times we are living in, Lord Nikolias.” She said with a shake of her head and a chuckle. Sometimes one had to laugh to keep from crying.
She slid the sandals onto her feet, taking a moment to ensure they were on correctly before brushing off her chiton. ”I would love to see Ophelia.” Sara said then, nodding. She was a little over ten years older than Sara, but now was the time to be fortifying connections within the families. While she did not intend to be her mother’s pawn, Sara did have a mind to make connections and rekindle relationships that perhaps she had let falter. She turned to look back at the palati, and gestured back towards the home.
”Would you care to walk with me back to the palati?” She asked, sounding hopeful. ”Perhaps you could...tell me what you know of Achilleas? If there has been any word from the front? Did Lord Nikos go with him? I have missed so much by being away.” She looked ashamed, her fall from her previous station having cost her so much. She couldn’t imagine what it was like to have been born amongst the common people, they seemed to be the last to know anything.

Did Lord Nikos go with him? I have missed so much by being away.” She looked ashamed, her fall from her previous station having cost her so much. She couldn’t imagine what it was like to have been born amongst the common people, they seemed to be the last to know anything.
Nikolias could not agree more. "Strange times, indeed," he murmured. "Achilleas went to war just two weeks after the wedding." He prepared to follow Sara to the palati, talking as they began to walk. "King Achilleas left for war a mere two weeks after the wedding." It seemed to be just another thing that must feel odd among many. Nikolias could not remember a year with so many deaths and new kings, let alone the rest of the turmoil. Of course, one might argue that at least a little chaos might have been avoided if it had not looked as though Stephanos were responsible for part of it. In his own mind, Nikolias doubted that Stephanos would have stooped so low as to murder the king- appearances notwithstanding- but neither would he have put anything past so brash a young man. He sighed heavily at the state of things before continuing.
"I imagine before Achilleas left, he was getting to know his wife and settling into his new role. No, Lord Nikos did not go." That was probably a good thing, one of very few Nikolias could see, all things considered. "I hope we get word of how things are going soon...but meanwhile, how is your visit going? I hope you don't find yourself bored- in the middle of a war as we are, with one of your brothers gone to it." He was unsure how well the girls would have known Theodora before Theodora went from a Leventi to a Mikaelidas, so perhaps it went without saying that aside from their brothers, they might know very few people in the palati well. Knowing he could sometimes feel awkward when meeting new people himself despite his age, Nikolias could perhaps empathize a little.

The brunette nodded, his information not entirely new to her. She had known that her brother would be leaving fairly quickly, and that she had run into him at all during her move out of archontikos has been a surprise to her then. War was one of those things that either moved swiftly like a river or slowly like a creeping vine. There never seemed to be any inbetween. She thought of Theodora, wondering how hard it must have been for her. The wedding day had been far from the happy day that Sara had been hoping for, so the gods above -- she could not imagine the queen’s feelings.
She knew that the last few months had been some of the most absurd that she had ever witnessed in her short fifteen years, and she wondered idly if Nikolias might have seen anything like this before. She grimaced at the idea of watching similar tragedies and dramatics play out over the rest of her life, and used her distaste as momentum to begin walking back to the palati with Nikolias in tow.
”I did get to see him, before I left the archontikos.” She said with a little nod. ”I imagine that he was very busy, but he did take the time to see me before I left.” She smiled a little at the memory, because somehow -- despite how horrible it was to be forced out of her home, it was one of the few times that she could keep close to her heart. Family was so important, time was so fleeting. And even now, it pained her to worry about him across the seas -- fighting for something that she didn’t even understand. Not really.
It did surprise her to hear that Lord Nikos had not gone to war with her brother. She could not remember just then if Nikos was even involved with the military actions of Taengea. She had little use for such knowledge, but it seemed that it would be exceptionally rude to imply the strangeness of the idea to his father. ”I imagine that you’re glad to have him home and safe.” She said instead, keeping her tone diplomatic even as she internally disapproved. Nikos was an able-bodied man. There must have been some reason she didn’t understand as to why he had been spared the war.
”Bored?” She asked, thinking the question an odd one. She could not help the sharp tone of her tongue as she thought of her situation. ”I think I have plenty to keep me busy, Lord Nikolias.” She said, the palati having started to rise around them as they had walked. ”Settling my mother and sister in our new home has kept me from being bored.”
”What of you?” She asked, ascending a pair of marble steps. ”I understand little of the ways of men and wars and the like, but...I am curious as to why you and your son did not go with my brother?”

Nikolias smiled a little. "Having had no siblings of my own, I can imagine it must be a comfort that he took time to see you," he offered. It was something, in a world which had most likely gone topsy-turvy for Sara and Tasia. "Would you consider yourself to be close to your brothers? I am honestly curious, as I can't imagine having such a relationship myself." He used to- fleetingly and only in childhood- but now, it would almost certainly be a shock of epic proportions to become aware that he had a sibling. He wondered briefly how Emilios and Achilleas had felt about their half-sisters at first, but he was asking his questions for Sara, not for them.
He couldn't quite have said he knew all of Nikos' reasons for staying home from war- not that he didn't care, but perhaps everyone was entitled to a few secrets now and then. He was unsure, if he'd been in Nikos' position, if he'd have wanted his parents knowing everything he was up to either- especially when it came to his romantic life.
But he did know at least one reason why Nikos might have decided to stay home.
"Nikos has not been to war, and as an only son, such a thing is particularly risky, though I will not go so far as to say I pressured him into staying home at all. As well, he is a baron and I am a senator. If everyone went to war- important as it is- who would rule?" Considering that he had never been in line for the throne, Nikolias had never thought seriously about ruling himself, but that didn't mean the question hadn't bothered him from time to time. Especially in Taengea's present circumstances.

He asked about her brothers, claiming that he would not know about having such familial bonds. His questioning might have been innocent enough, and yet Sara hesitated to answer him. Was he looking for information? Simply curious? Once she might have answered his question with the bare truth, laying it all out on display like a feast -- but with age came wisdom and she was not so quick to divulge the family dynamics. ”I love all of my siblings very much.” She said simply, giving a light shrug of her shoulders. It was the truth.
She walked with him, keeping her pace measured even as they approached the palati gardens. She found herself wishing once more that she could stay long enough to see something planted here, and then again wondering if her garden at the archontikos had been ripped up. Some part of her almost did not wish to know, worried about the feelings of ill will that would bubble up should she find that her most prized possession had been torn apart like it was nothing.
Her gaze flickered to his as he answered her question about his son, her brows furrowing down.
Admittedly, Sara knew very little about the inner workings of political games and military strategy. So when Lord Condos told her that his son had not gone off to war, it made her pause for a moment and she had to be cautious about the sharpness of her tongue. How was it that his first born son had been spared the hardship of war, when the king was off on the front lines? She felt a flash of irritation, which quickly burned through the lingering sadness she had been feeling earlier.
”How fortunate.” She said, her voice forcibly light. ”What a blessing.”
And yet…
”It seems there are plenty of men here left to rule. The king departed and left not one…” She paused, thinking through the lines of succession. Emilios was obviously the heir, until Achilleas and Theodora produced a child. Then Nikolias Condos, and if all else were to fail...Nikos. ”But three potential replacements if he were to fail to return. Surely not all of you are needed here, surely one of you should have gone to stand with him.” She felt a flush warm her cheeks. That most certainly was inappropriate to say.
”I apologize for my impertinence. I mean no offense...this...this whole situation has been...difficult.” She said, pausing in her step to bow stiffly to him in apology. When she looked up, a familiar voice was calling. Erika, the housekeeper.
”Thank you for escorting me this far.” Sara said quickly. ”But it appears I am needed elsewhere.” She bowed politely, and turned on a heel -- grateful for the reprieve before her mouth could cause anymore trouble. She was suitably pleased to find that Erika had brought her a letter from Alastor, and that soothed her troubled heart further even as she left Lord Nikolias behind.
