I do hope this letter reaches you in good tidings. I do apologize, as this letter was unexpected, and from a stranger no less. My name is Marietta of Antonis, second daughter of Alehandros and Sotiria of Antonis.
Even here in Athenia we know of the beauty the hails from Taengea, specifically of its art. Apollo has certainly blessed its lands and people with a magnificent vision that artists around the world envy. I have personally heard that those that live in Messenis have a proclivity to the creative arts. I am sure that the festivals thrown there, as well as the rest of Taengea, are something to marvel over. (Although, that is not to say that Athenia is lacking, of course.)
And Apollo’s temple is something that I dream of visiting myself. I shall never have the opportunity to gaze upon the Gods myself, but there at least I could give Apollo proper respects for the beauty that he has spread around the world, blessing all us mortals. I take care to dedicate my greatest works to him, for through his blessings upon the world I gather my muse and attempt to contribute to its beauty.
Last, the University would be something of great interest to me. I visit the University in Athenia often, but one of the arts is a privilege very few would get to witness. Only the best may enter and learn, and to see art as it is being formed rather than a finished product, would be a breathtaking sight. The emotions behind an inspired artist and their work can stir memories deep within, hidden behind years of life, forgotten until an artist appears to pull it out.
Alas, I have rattled on in this letter. I must admit, the last two drafts turned out much longer. Art, as you can see, is something that drives me. There is no greater joy than seeing my creations completed. And in that, I must gather the bravery to ask you, Princess Xene, of a favor. I do realize I am a stranger from a foreign Kingdom, and in these times there is the chance that this letter never makes it to you. However, it is because of these times that I cannot go to Taengea myself. So, my request, should you be so gracious to grant it, is this: Enclosed I have sent two paintings. (One of which I do admit is rather dark.) I would love it to be displayed somewhere in Taengea where others may share the same joy that I do seeing a finished work (and as well the feelings I wish to portray in my visions). Should they not be adequate, however, a letter in response to what you think I should do to improve would urge me to work harder, so that this request could one day be worthy of being fulfilled.
I thank you for your time, and once again do apologize for the unexpected nature of this request,
Lady Marietta of Antonis
[Enclosed are two paintings:
The first, a vision of the Athenian harbor. It’s ocean tinged green, poisoned and rotted with death and decay. In it a single ferry with a man reaching forth towards a crowd. The crowd pushes and clamors over each other, skin sallow and thin. Charon beckons for Athenians, the ocean now the river of Styx.
The second is of a man, a soldier, dripping with rain. All around the world twists and turns, Poseidon bringing down a tempest onto the people. But through the swirling grey clouds, a sun’s beam breaks through, shining onto the soldier giving him an ethereal glow. His hand reaches out to a girl next to an overturned carriage, and she does the same, their fingers nearly touching. While this is the center of the portrait, the background shows a doctor nursing the hurt, and two Ladies attempting to help soothe animals. This is an imagery of commoner and royals coming together, helping in times of crisis.]
