One would think that an arduous, four month long journey would have been enough to put anyone off continuing. What should've been only done in one and a half months had only been delayed by a squall in the ship she took, being cheated of her money she would need to get her to Egypt, and then even more when the rest of her belongings had been taken away from her when she had found refuge in a stable one night to sleep. Kahi had been absolutely worn out, and her appearance was completely nothing to shout about.
In fact, had she not met a beautiful soul in the form of Mayet, she likely wouldn't even have made it to Egypt to begin with. But maybe whatever Gods that existed actually saw pity on her for once, for they had her meet a sweet girl and her father who agreed to bring her to Egypt on their wagon. Mayet couldn't do much for her tattered outfit, but the few days she spent on the back of the rattling wagon, the two girls found a kinship with each other, and Mayet eventually at least managed to wipe much of the dust off Kahi's face when they got to the house Khufu had instructed her to find. Did she look a fright? Yes. She had no belongings to speak of, her clothes were stained and dirty, her hair haven't been washed for days and looked like the nest of a rat upon her head - but she was here.
Bidding her goodbyes to her new friend (thank goodness she would be living nearby!) and finally turning to face the front door, the Judean born girl took a deep, fortifying breath.
Had he forgotten her? Had he already taken up with someone else? Khufu had been so much more older then her, why would he continue waiting for her? But he had sent for her! He wouldn't have included that much coin for her passage over to Egypt if he didn't actually want her - right? Or maybe her father was right and he simply wanted her to be his whore, like what most Egyptian men did. Already as it was, her first few days in Egypt, and Kahi found herself needing to avert her eyes so many times. Mayet explained to her that it was normal for many female's in Egypt to go topless, and while the network clothing they wore look absolutely liberating, her lifelong upbringing in Judea still had her finding it odd.
But she was wasting her time.
Taking another deep breathe, Kahi lifted a wrist and rapped on the door three times. She lost the gifts he had given her when he had been in Judea - would he mind? Biting her bottom lip, Kahi tried to keep the self-doubting thoughts out of her mind, and a smile started on her lips as the door opened...
...Only to fall when a woman half-naked, her chest clearly for all to see opened the door. It was obvious her clothes had been haphazardly dragged on, for even as she stood there, the rest of the dress she wore fell, and Kahi gasped at the naked form, before taking a step back in horror. Did she get the wrong house? With hesitant coptic, Kahi asked slowly, "Is this the residence of Khufu of Benin?" When the naked lady turned over her shoulder to call loudly up the stairwell, Kahi could almost feel tears spring in her eyes.
So he had forgotten her afterall.

At this point Khufu was sure that Ketzi was not coming, more than enough time had passed that she should have been there, or at least sent word that she was on her way. But there was nothing, not a single whisper that she was actually on her way. He had a suspicion that she had just taken him for his money. She was likely back in Judea, laughing at him for sending his money to her, for thinking that she would actually agree to marry him and come to Egypt.
He had learned his lesson, and had decided to try and stick with women from his own area. So far there had been no women that interested him quite the way that Ketzi had, but at the very least he was having fun with a few quick flings. One of such flings was currently at his house, and things were just starting to get good. The wine had been flowing, and the woman was beautiful and... then there was a knock at the door. Khufu groaned, who could that possibly be? He wasn’t expecting any company, and if this was some sort of prank from Zoser, he was going to kick his ass.
The woman he was with left to answer the door, half-assed throwing her clothes on as she did so. He waited for her, figuring that if it was Zoser he would realize what was going on and would leave him to it with his most recent lover.
But when she called for him, Khufu groaned and rolled his eyes. He grabbed the nearest clothing and tied it around his waist to cover himself up at least, Zoser didn’t need to quite see the entirety of him, they were close but not quite that close.
“Zoser, I swear to the Gods...” He started as he came down the stairs, but he froze when he saw who was at the door. He was lost for words, shocked that she actually came, and embarrassed that she was now being greeted by his naked lover.
Ketzi had been the woman he wanted to marry, but he had given up on her when she hadn’t shown up and hadn’t sent word. And now there she was, standing in his doorway, looking like someone straight off the street. Her hair was a mess, she was covered in dirt, her clothes were filthy and ripped.
Contrasted, there stood a beautiful, clean and well groomed woman, already naked and ready to sleep with him.
“Ahmose. Go.” He said, and the naked woman whirled around, looking at him with great offence. She huffed and gathered her clothes from the floor, pushing past Ketzi, she stormed outside fully naked and made her way down the street away from his house.
He stood there for a moment longer before a wide grin broke out over his face.
“You look awful.” He said, then he stepped toward her, taking her hand, he pulled her inside.
“Come, lets get you out of the street and inside.” He said, closing the door behind them.
“What happened? You didn’t show up, you didn’t send word. I thought you weren’t coming.” He said, shocked and excited that she was actually there. He wanted to get her cleaned up, to make sure she had food, and something to drink. He was overjoyed to see her there, and couldn’t believe that she was actually at his door.
“Come, sit.” He said, guiding her over to his table and chairs, she looked exhausted and like she had been through hell.

She didn't know how a heart could break until that moment. Had she been mistaken? Had it been better off for her to listen to her mother afterall? Kahi could still feel it ringing in her ears, the way her parents had yelled at her when she had shown them the missive and money Khufu had sent her. They had called her stupid for wanting to travel so far to marry a man she had only just met, that she'd likely be caught in a slave trade. Kahi had left that night, eager to find her supposed love, and believing her parents simply didn't see the way she saw. She had never felt at home in her birth home anyway. How could she be expected to behave and act like a demure young lady the way Yahweh would want - when she hated every moment of it? Kahi was outspoken by nature, but outspokenness was frowned upon in Judea.
As he descended, only his waist covered up, her throat fell further into her stomach, and if Kahi had thought she couldn't feel worst, she now did, as her vision blurred before her.
Biting her bottom lip, Kahi simultaneously wanted to scream, but couldn't say a word. It would be an embarassment for her voice to tremble now, her throat clogged with emotion. But she wanted to rail at him, her vision so clouded now she didn't even catch the way the woman had glared at Khufu, her head bent down to stare at her feet as she did her best to will her tears away. Had he cheated her? Did he simply want her here to sell her as a slave afterall? And the worst part was - he could! Kahi now no longer had a single coin or belonging to her name other then the clothes she wore on her back. Even if he offered to use her as a paid whore now, Kahi would really have no choice.
Her muscles tensed as he took her head, but the woman was far too tired to fight him bringing her inside. Why had she been so dumb to believe someone of Khufu's age, with his accomplishments, would want her?
Only when he finally closed the door with a click, did her senses snap back into working order, her brain churning to understand his coptic. She understood well enough, but unlike Hebrew, it didn't come naturally to her, never having had enough practice with someone until Khufu had come along. But what was clear to Kahi, was the fact that she was angry, and as he guided her over to the table, the young brunette suddenly wrenched her arms out of his grip, before pushing against his chest, intending to create some distance between them.
"You lied!" she shouted in Hebrew, her anger making her descend to her mother tongue before catching herself. Kahi cleared her throat, taking a gulp as if she wanted to swallow her profound sadness and anger with it, before turning a pair of glaring eyes at the man again. "So I'm late for a few months - and you turn to someone else so quickly? Am I that dispensible to you? I get cheated, get my coin stolen, and then I had to sit on a slow wagon who made a thousand stops before it got to Egypt, and then I see this?!"

Khufu understood Hebrew, at least enough to get by, and he understood both what she was saying, and her reasoning behind it. He could imagine the anger she must have felt at him with another woman, but to be fair to him, it had been months since he had even heard from her, and months since she was supposed to have even been there. How was he to know that she was even still on her way, let alone that she would show up on his doorstep?
He didn’t get upset, not at her shouting or when she shoved him. She had every right to be upset considering she had travelled so far for a marriage proposal only to find the man who had proposed such with another lover. Aside from all that, she looked tired and hungry and like she could use a good bath. Khufu was sure that once she was more comfortable, she would calm down at least enough to have a rational conversation and understand his point of view.
“I did not think you were coming, you did not send word ahead of your arrival, and your arrival was supposed to be months ago. What was I to do? I had assumed you had taken my money and never left home.” He said simply, voice calm, the grin and joy at seeing her never fading from his face.
Without another word he turned and gathered some things from the kitchen, setting a clay plate on the table containing a variety of breads, pastries, dried fruits and some jerky. He didn’t imagine what ever wagon she ended up hitching a ride on had a lot of rations to share with a random stranger. Whether she was angry with him or not, he wasn’t going to let her go without proper food.
“Wine or water?” He asked, as if she was not standing there, seething with anger at him. He did not see a point in playing into it, she could be mad for awhile, and when she was a bit calmer they could talk, and he could hopefully sway her back to his side.
Now that she had actually made it to Egypt, he had every intention of marrying the woman. Despite his partners over the past couple of months, she was still the one who held his heart and that had not changed, despite the fact that he hadn’t even been sure she hadn’t just played him for a fool and taken his money.
“You’re here now. And my heart sings because of it.” He said simply, taking a seat at his table and motioning for her to take the chair across from him and enjoy the food, water and wine that was offered upon the table.
“When you did not arrive when you should have, my heart was broken, Ketzi. It remained so until the very moment I saw you standing outside my door, looking tired and miserable and absolutely breathtaking.” He said, flashing her a charming smile. He typically had a silver tongue, though today the words he spoke were not only slightly poetic, but also completely true. He didn’t know what it was about this woman who was so much younger than him, who came from a completely different land with a completely different way of life, but from the moment he had met her, he had fallen completely in love with her. He had hoped that such was obvious from his words and actions.

He had hoped that such was obvious from his words and actions.
Despite her bubbling anger, a small part of logic in Kahi's brain reminded her to calm down - technically, she had taken three months to arrive, which was one and a half months too long. For all she knew, Khufu was the one who thought he had been cheated. He had been the one to send money over to her afterall, and she had had nothing to lose. That he trusted her enough to send that much coin over and hope she didn't just run off with it, Kahi should be touched.
But seeing who she had thought would be her husband practically fall out of bed with another hussy who she had just got an eyeful of very bountiful breasts, did not put her in a good mood.
The reminder from the logical part of her brain did, however, calm her down enough to finally reduce her anger to a simmering heat, as she glared at him puttering around the kitchen until he finally sat down at the table. When he did motion, the brunette looked looked suspiciously at the chair for a moment, as if the seat would be an entrapment upon it, before finally taking a seat.
Despite herself, the girl found her hands eagerly taking the water, her parched throat still getting used to the Egyptian desert heat. It was hot in Judea, sure, but she had always found the balmy breeze a great reprieve. But Egypt seemed hot and stifling - or maybe it was just who she sat across. But the girl had to remind herself to not simply fall for his sweet tongue again as she set down the drained cup of water, and then eyed the proffered food carefully.
Her gaze flicked to the man as he explained, and then her nose wrinkled. She had renounced her name when she left, and Mayet had been more then happy to name her when she had heard her story. "Kahi." she muttered first, correcting his usage of her name. That was the name he had used and been introduced to her by back then, but hearing the Judean name made her wince as she remembered the last altercation she had with her parents, and the way her mother had screamed wishing she had never been born - that she wasn't her daughter.
It was a memory she preferred to forget.
So Kahi was more then happy to take the new name - and hopefully, if she could get over this little bump with Khufu seemingly taking new lovers - to take a new life. Raising a brow at his claim of her being breathtaking, she took a look down at her dirt-stained, messy hair self, and looked back at the man with a challenge in her eye. "Breathtaking?" she echoed in passable coptic. Her accent was still there, but it would go away in a few months with exposure. "Are you hiding some other woman in this house, Khufu? And for that matter, do you take up women regularly? Because this looks like a habit you conveniently forgot to tell me when we first met." she murmured sarcastically, albeit with a lilt of amusement. Kahi had always fought Khufu's silver tongue with sarcasm of her own - how that had ended up with a marriage proposal, she was still trying to figure out, and was half the reason why she was still finding it slightly hard to believe Khufu actually wanted to marry her.

When she drained her cup of water, he grabbed the pitcher of water to pour her another glass, in case she was in need of more. He wanted to take care of her already, whether or not she wanted him to, she still held his heart. Especially since he knew now that she had not just taken his money and run with it. He had been fairly upset for the first while when she had not shown up when she was supposed to.
He raised an eyebrow as she corrected him on use of her name. He hadn’t been aware that she had decided to change her name to something Egyptian, but he made note of it. He also realized, it was part of shedding her old life and coming to Egypt. She really did plan on leaving everything and everyone she knew behind to start a life here with him. And he could appreciate that, it was something amazing that she had come so far for someone like him.
“There are no other women.” He said simply, then shrugged as she questioned him further. He knew that they came from two very different places, that Judea was a lot more prudish than Egypt, by a lot. He knew that sex there was not as casual as it was, so he supposed for Kahi, it would seem like a much larger deal than it was to him.
“Things are different here. Sex is part of everyday life. For the record, I did not take up with another woman when we started courting, until I thought you had stood me up and were not going to show.” He said, wondering if she would understand that. He had thought she was not going to come, was he supposed to wait forever without knowing if she was going to actually come or not?
“Should you choose to still marry me, there will be no other women. There is no woman I would rather be with, just you Kahi.” He said, using her new name, which for some reason felt more right than her old one.
“I am sorry, truly.” He said, this time it wasn’t charismatic flattery, it was the truth. Had he known she was coming, he would have waited. None of the other women he had been with while waiting for her had meant a thing, not even a fraction of what he felt for this young woman. He didn’t know how or why, but there was something about her that drove him crazy.
“Forgive me, for being with other women. But let us move forward. You are here now. I am here. Let’s get married. Let’s start our lives together. Your new life, here in Egypt.” He said, her reaction would determine his next steps. Either she would want to stay there, to still marry him, or she would not and he would find her somewhere to stay until she figured something out to do with her life. He doubted that she could just go back home, after running away to marry a man in Egypt, he doubted her family would take her back.

For him to so quickly say there was no other woman went against what Kahi had grew up seeing. The marriages in Judea was sacred, and unlike Egypt, one identified a life partner and stayed with them. Partners outside of marriage resulted in the person who strayed being looked down on for life, and Kahi had heard of more then one occasion where the woman who sought comfort elsewhere had gotten stoned. She had much to learn about Egypt yet, so despite Khufu reassuring that sex was very much an everyday part of life, she still had her misgivings.
Still, Kahi was not illogical. She remembered Mayet saying something similar on their slow carriage ride over, not to mention the sparse amounts of clothing she saw the woman of Egypt wore ever since they had crossed the border. So to a certain extent, Kahi knew there was some truth to Khufu's words - she simply was trying to see if she wanted to believe him or not.
The young woman's eyes narrowed at the man in front of her as he proffered his offer of marriage again. But truly, where was she to go? In a way, she had been late. But was she truly expecting him to wallow in misery until she came along? That wouldn't at all be the Khufu she had known anyway. It was a nice imagery to have of course, but Kahi should've been far more honest with herself and knew that Khufu wouldn't be the type to mope and drink himself to oblivion simply because he was sad.
Yet, it wasn't any of his flattery or flowery words that got to her heart, but a simple, heartfelt apology. Perhaps that was what that had caught Kahi's heart to begin with, for despite how charming and flirtatious Khufu could be, he had always spoken to her with honesty and genuinety, that Kahi could never see a lie in his eyes. Maybe he simply was a very good liar, and if he was, she would see her own choices being thrown back in her face in a few years. Maybe she'd regret it then, and maybe then she'd return to Judea and apologize to her parents.
Maybe.
But for now, she had to stand by her choice and her gut. She had chosen to follow Khufu on her own gut feel, and that same feel now told her he didn't lie. She may as well see through her own choices, right? She was here, and since he had admitted his own wrongs and apologized for it, Kahi could see no reason why they couldn't just start again on the right foot again, after the various unfortunate happenings that had landed on her after her arrival in Egypt.
So after a long, contemplative silence, Kahi finally offered a hesitant smile which grew into a bigger, slightly wry one as she nodded slightly. "Now, how does this marriage thing work here? I hope you don't need the father of the bride to discuss matters, because if you do, we may have a problem."

Khufu waited in silence, and he had no idea what thoughts were going through her head. But he had said what he needed to say, and it was up to her now to figure out what she wanted to do. He would pay for her voyage back to Judea if that was what she chose, he was not going to just leave her here with no where to go and without knowing anyone, he wasn’t a cruel man. She had come here for him, but if she did not want to stay here because of him, then so be it.
He grinned widely as she asked after marriage. She had made her decision then, despite the slightly bad start to her life in Egypt, she would still marry him and stay there.
“No need to worry, we can get married without your father’s permission.” He assured her. Generally it wasn’t a huge deal for the lower class to get married without knowing each others families. He didn’t think that her family would be too happy about the marriage, and he assumed that she was forsaking her own parents and family to come and marry him, and that wasn’t lost on Khufu. She had really given up a lot for him, and he wanted to make sure it was worth it for her.
“But we can discuss marriage at a later time. You look tired, and like you could use a bath.” He stood from his chair and offered her his hand so that she could do the same. When she stood he had to resist the urge to pull her into a kiss, he didn’t want to be too forward, knowing that where she came from, modesty was common.
He wasted no time preparing a bath for her, giving her some privacy to get clean, he stepped out for a few moments to try and find her something to wear. He returned with a few dresses, the most modest ones that he could find in Egypt, he knew that the culture difference would be a bit of a shock for her after all, and after being used to women being covered up, he wasn’t sure she would want to go straight to exposing so much skin.
When she was clean and feeling a bit better, he made sure she was settled in his bed comfortably before he went to sleep in another room on an extra bed he had for when Zoser would come over and get too drunk to make it home. He knew that they would be married soon, and as such they would be sharing a bed and much more, but she had just gotten there, and they hadn’t yet had the chance to figure everything out. He could stay in the guest room for an extra night or two until the two of them had the chance to talk things out and she had a chance to start getting comfortable with her new life and future husband.
