The sea darted across the sand as it tried to catch up to the beach, only to fall backward among the bubbles of the water. It rumbled in its frustration as it made an effort to try again, cursed to fall each and every time. The tide was low, however, which allowed Athenians to enjoy the day along the sands and rocks. Laughter was heard in the distance, drowned out by the crashing waves. Adrestus was often at the beach himself, and today wasn’t any different. He was laying along the beach, away from the water, and smiling to himself as he glanced up to the sky. The teenager was waiting for a friend of his so that they could hang out together. He had specifically come to the northern harbor because he had something to tell her, which he knew she wouldn’t like, but he hoped that if they had some fun at first maybe it would make his words not feel so bad. He was going to give a lot of his life to the sea, traveling around the world. Unfortunately, that meant leaving some things behind.
He glanced over to the side as he saw her walking his way, and the young noble boy moved to a sitting position. He wasn’t particularly close to the girl that was walking up to him, but he knew her enough to like her. He was probably a little closer to Evi then he was to Marietta, though compared to the rest of his friends, such as Ismene, he wasn’t super close at all to either. He thought Marietta was very pretty, though, and, although he had a big crush on Calliope, he couldn’t help the feelings of wishing that he could have gotten closer to Marietta. Not just closer in friendship either. He gripped the sand underneath him as Adrestus stood up, and waved his hand in greeting towards the royal teen. “I’m so glad you came! Poseidon has given us great weather, hasn’t he?” The teen said in an incredibly cheerful voice.
“I was very bored today, I was wondering if you would like to have some fun?” Adrestus was just interested in fun, and he was sure Marietta wouldn’t say no. The water was sparkling blue, and the skies were clear. Who wouldn’t want to go into the water now? Of course, being from his province, he just assumed everyone knew how to swim. Adrestus smiled over at her as he suddenly got an idea. “Marietta, I challenge you to race me. The first one that is headfirst in the water wins!” He backed up a bit before drawing a line in the sand facing the water and standing behind it. “I won’t cheat, promise.”

Marietta was excited! She loved to watch the sea. It was a wonderful inspiration for her music. She wished she could drag her harp to the beach and pluck at it, using the sound of the ocean waves to set the tempo. She would dedicate her song to Poseidon, that day’s source of her muse.
But alas, today was not about music, nor was she going to work out the logistics of bringing a harp to the beach. Today she was going to spend it with her friend, Adrestus. Any moment she spent with Adre was one worth cherishing. The two weren’t close like she was with Elias or Sofia, but she still very much had a special place in her heart for Adre. He was fun, carefree, and very easy to spend time with. It was hard for the child to truly make many friends. At twelve years old she found it near impossible to speak, hiding behind Sanasa or her parents when at any events that had many strangers. And yet Adre was special, able to crash through her shy barriers and drag the real Marietta out to the surface. She found herself able to laugh and joke, run around and have fun, with Adrestus of Nikolaos, a feat too few people could claim. Even if he had the unique ability to get under her skin and draw a blush in a blink of an eye.
Marietta made her way over to the young teen. She had a wide smile on her face, waving back to his greeting. “Oh yes, the day is beautiful! Hardly a cloud in the sky. And the shade of blue is impeccable, I could never get my paints to look that deep.” Marietta looked out into the horizon. Where the sky kissed the ocean was a draw-dropping visage. It was like Zeus and Poseidon reaching out and shaking hands, two brothers agreeing to provide a beautiful day for Adrestus and Marietta.
Her eyes snapped back to him, sparkling with pure joy. But suddenly, she felt a knot form in her stomach. He was drawing a line so that they could race to the ocean. Marietta pursed her lips. She did not know how to swim. She never went into the water deeper than she could stand, and Marietta worried that the waves would be powerful enough to knock her off her feet. So when he drew the line, she just shook her head.
“The water must be cold today, Adrestus.” Despite the sun warming the beach. Was the water ever cold in Greece? “It would do us no good being chilly. I would hate to catch something. What if I make my family ill?” Marietta blushed. She did not want to admit that she knew not how to swim. It would make her look inept. He would surely tease her about it. After all, what twelve year old in Greece didn’t know how to swim? It just always seemed so scary to Marietta. It was easier to rely on her own two feet, than float and not know what is deep down below.

He waved in excitement when he saw Marietta coming forward. The beach was nice to be at, and the waves wrestled in the distance. He smiled as she talked about her painting, and the teen turned his head to the side. “Not with those words you won’t.” Adrestus smiled. “Just keep painting and one day you will surely be able to get the most fantastic colors.” There wasn’t anything to say she wasn’t and she had plenty of time to practice too. Just like he had practiced sailing. He was quick to spur into action and came up with a game they could play. The whole reason was to tell Marietta some bad news, but the teen didn’t want to do so. He would stall for it as long as he could, knowing that the royal wouldn’t necessarily like it. He wasn’t too keen about the whole telling her that he was leaving for what would be years. Races fix all, however, and Adrestus made a line in the sand with his foot.
Adrestus growing up in a seafaring province, loved to swim. He loved everything about the sea. This was all that he knew, and he didn’t even think about the fact that other people may have not learned to swim. He had been swimming from a young age. He paused at Marietta’s words and looked at her like she had said the wildest thing. “Cold? Who cares about that.” He looked over at her, and his face changed from confusion to realization. “Oh! I know what this is about!” The young teen pointed at her. “You’re scared of a non-royal beating you!” Adrestus broke out in laughter and shook his head. He clutched his hand to his chest.
“You….” He laughed more before taking a breath. “You’re not going to make your family ill. If it’s really that cold to you we can get out quickly.” Adrestus explained, before preparing himself for the race. He swept the sand so it was even under his feet, and stretched his arms. “Come on Marietta, I’ll go easy on you, how about that?” He called over to her, chuckling. “I never knew royals could be scared of losing so much.” Elias was never scared of anything. Adrestus was overconfident, but it never even crossed his mind that Marietta could be scared of the water instead of the actual race. “What if I gave you a head start? Would that make things more fair for you?” He asked, watching for her response. He really wanted to have fun with her, before he told her the bad news.
“Or, what about this? I close my eyes while running too? That sounds fun.” He’d probably fall on his face, but… whatever made Marietta comfortable. “Don’t skip out on me please!”

Was it possible to get blues quite as deep as the day’s sky? She was only new to painting, still getting inspiration from everyday occurrences. Would she one day be good at it, so good that she can match Zeus’ blue sky or Poseidon’s oceans? Wait, this didn’t matter right now. Adrestus wanted her to swim. Marietta couldn’t do that! If she had known today they would be swimming she would have tried to learn ahead of time. Or she would suddenly become terribly ill and send a gift basket of fresh fruits and cheeses to Adre in apology.
Marietta bit her lip and now a blush formed on her face. He was laughing at her. And he would laugh even harder once he found out she didn’t know how to swim. How could she tell him the truth when the truth was so embarrassing? Would he look at her again? What if they stopped being friends? What if he was so perplexed by the mere notion that a human being couldn’t swim at her age that he found her to be an idiot? And then she would become the gossip among all the nobles and everyone would laugh at her and call her names. Maybe even Elias and Sofia would stop being friends with her as to not sully their reputation, especially now that the two of them were going to court.
Wait, no, Adrestus was a nice person. He was one of the nicest people that Marietta ever met. She didn’t have many friends, but Adre was certainly one of them. He wouldn’t do that. He wouldn’t gossip and hurt her feelings. He’d just tease her and make her blush so hard that she would start hiccuping. And then he would laugh again and Marietta would throw sand at him or hit his shoulder lightly until he stopped. And then they would do other stuff. It would be fine.
She just had to… not get in the water. And to convince Adre, who seemed not to comprehend that the young Lady really didn’t want to go into the ocean, she should tell the truth. He would only laugh a little bit, and then it’ll be over and the two could go back to playing. Maybe they could look for sea shells! Sea shells were so pretty. Or maybe there was buried treasure in the beach that they could go on an adventure to find. Swimming wasn’t necessary to have fun.
She rocked back and forth on her feet nervously. “I don’t know how to swim, Adre. The ocean is scary, and I dunno what’s under my feet. What if I upset Poseidon? I don’t know if I have because I never learned how to swim so he could have been angry with me all this time. But it’s okay! If you want to swim I can watch! I’ll look for seashells. Oh and maybe there’s some pretty rocks too! Do you think someone dropped gems on the beach? There could be treasure out here! I can look for that while you swim.”

The sea was his life. It was what he was made of. His province was close to the ocean, and naturally young Adrestus thought it was a part of everyone’s life. Hence why he thought meeting at the beach would work for a place to soften the blow of he had to give Marietta. There was no avoiding it, but he could stall for as long as possible. He smiled over at her, and while she was refusing to race, he was sure it was because she thought he would win. Ha! Adrestus tried to make it easier for her, but it seemed to not work. She was scared he was going to win! The idea felt good- winning against a royal. He pondered the thought for a moment. Well, he didn’t want to win by default… He moved closer to her, wondering the reason why she didn’t want to race. There had to be some reason. He watched as she looked nervous, and Adrestus let out a sigh as his smile dissipated. Now he really felt bad.
“Oh, I didn’t know.” Adrestus seemed to stop in his tracks and looked down. He hadn’t even known there were people out there not knowing how to swim. He turned his head away from her, towards the water, and let out a deep sigh. “Well…” He took her to have fun. Not to scare her, and while he did have bad news, he didn’t want to start off like this. “Shells sound nice, but I wanted to swim with you first.” His grin grew on his face. “The ocean isn’t scary, Poseidon protects us. Plus, I’m here.” As if it was any comfort, but Adrestus was trying. “What if I…. taught you how to swim? That way you won’t be scared of it anymore. Plus, we have plenty of time to look at shells.” Young Adre explained, before walking closer and reaching out his hand. “Try? At least? I won’t make you do anything, but… like I said, I’m here.” He nodded, before gesturing to the waves crashing along the shore. He started to put one foot in front of the other, before glancing over at his friend. “Let’s stand in the water together. We can go slow. It feels nice!” He started to step towards the tide and dipped his feet in before watching Marietta. “See! Nothing happens!” He called over to her, before moving so that the water touched his knee caps.
“You can hold onto me as long as you want. Poseidon is on our side.” His voice was confident and soft. He wanted to show her that the sea was a good thing. It was a fun thing! “Soon enough, you’ll be fully in the water! Nothing is going to happen to you, or me.” He said comforting her. Adrestus took another step, going deeper still, the waterline almost to his waist. “We can take it slow, you are going to be fine. The water feels nice, yes? Follow me!” Adrestus observed his friend for a moment. “What made you so scared of the water? Did someone tell you bad things about it? I’m not judging you, I just want to know.”

Marietta didn’t want to do this. This was really, really scary. If she was going to learn how to swim she didn’t want to learn it in an ocean. Poseidon was a good god and she had faith in him, but she also didn’t know for sure if he had faith in Marietta. Marietta can do a lot of silly mistakes. He might have taken offense at something the child has done.
She bit her lip with each step. The water was cold, but not too cold. The salt in the ocean stung her skin a bit, but not so much so that it was unpleasant. It also had a bit of a smell that reminded Marietta of the sailors at the docks. It wasn’t quite like the bathhouse nor a lake.
Marietta jumped when she felt something at her feet and grabbed onto Adrestus’s arm. “What was tha-” Seaweed. She blushed deep red, a color that grew even more scarlet when she realized how close she was to him. Clearing her throat she took a step back.
This was awful. This was terrible. But she still went in one foot after another. She grabbed Adre’s hand again, nervous that a t any second she could be swept away by a wave, or a siren beneath the water pulls her deeper in.
The water was about the middle of her stomach now. She had to keep her arms lifted so that they did not dip below. Marietta bit her lip. Why couldn’t he have just chosen seashells? That would have been really fun. She could have gotten a really, really pretty shell to give to him. Maybe they could have identical ones and so that way when they were separated it was like they were together. Or shells that they would trade back and forth, like a memory they keep reliving.
Instead, she was chest-deep in water. “Water’s scary Adre.” Marietta said, her grip going even harder. Some of the waves made her take a few steps back, and as it broke it lightly splashed her face. “I can’t see what’s beneath me? What if there’s something bad, Adre?”
She wanted to go back. She wasn’t ready to start floating, to play in the tide. One more step and…
Splash! Marietta stepped off what felt like a cliff and suddenly there was no floor beneath her. She dipped quickly into the ocean and when she resurfaced she clung to Adrestus’s body, legs and arms wrapped around him. There was no respect or decency for personal space. Not when she was this terrified. “I want to go back. Yep, I want to go back,” she said now dripping wet from the ocean. “I don’t know what’s down there, and I don’t know how to swim, and I want to go back. This is far too much, my Lord.”
It was funny that even when she was clinging to Adre like some sort of leech that she still had a semblance of propriety. Enough that she could make this request for the lower noble and pray to the gods that he would not laugh and push her to venture further.
