It was a beautiful day at the docks. Marietta had to get out of her home to clear her mind, and Sofia just so happened to visit that day. It took little convincing on Marietta’s part to get Sofia to go to the docks. Her friend was always up for an adventure, especially with Marietta who seldom was. Although a trip to the docks was exactly what the young girl needed. She enjoyed watching the common folk as they performed their daily activities. The boats were interesting to watch, as well. They were great feats of engineering, able to float on water while carrying people and cargo great distances. And the sea breeze would do well to calm the young woman’s mind.
Marietta strolled arm in arm with her friend. The sun shined bright in the afternoon sky. Its rays beat down upon the two girls, warming them while the ocean’s wind kept them cool. It was a beautiful autumn day, and yet Marietta’s mind was lost, missing in dark clouds. Even as her friend chattered on about this or that, Marietta could not focus. Her mind was on one thing.
Adrestus. She had been foolish. Marietta always thought before she acted. She was careful with each and every word she said. She rarely acted out, and when she did it was typically at Elias or Sofia’s prodding. But to travel all the way to see him, get him drunk, and then kiss him? He likely awoke the next morning horrified. How could Marietta do something so crass? To throw herself out there without any decency? Had his mind been clear, never would Adrestus have made that decision. Yes, her position as an Antonis daughter is not something to scoff at. But when she had sisters such as Evi or Sanasa or her cousin Vasia, Marietta was nothing. Even the friend beside her, Sofia of Marikas, was a much better choice than Marietta. She was the girl too afraid to speak. She was pretty, but not beautiful. She was smart, but not overly intelligent. What Marietta had was her painting, and that was a skill that at the end of the day did not make her any more suitable than the next woman. She wasn’t even the eldest daughter. Marietta was as uninteresting, insignificant as you could get.
She sighed, despite of herself and stopped. She blinked, looking over at Sofia. “Oh I apologize, were you speaking? My mind is… elsewhere.” She wrinkled her nose at her friend. “Sofia, might I ask you a question? Hypothetically speaking, of course…” She bit her lip. “I wanted, uh, a better understanding for my next artwork. It’s about… mistakes.” She lied terribly. “A mistake such as… well, what would you do if you got a man drunk and kissed him? The man wouldn’t typically be interest-” No, that would not do. No man wouldn’t be interested in Sofia. She paused again. “What would you do after you run away? Would you send a letter of apology? Or would you pretend the whole affair never happened?”

Sofia was glad to be on the move. It was the perfect day: warm enough still for lighter fabrics, but with chilled water droplets flinging themselves from the sea every once in a while, shocking bumps onto her arms. Another day of living with her best friend by her side. The two friends strolled along contentedly, with Sofia listening to the chatter of the workers and providing amusing commentary to Marietta as they went. Only, Marietta didn’t appear to be listening. Even before they had disembarked for the walk, it was clear to Sofia that her friend’s mind was elsewhere. Still, she knew not to pry. Either Marietta would eventually share her woes or she wouldn’t, and that was that. Better to enjoy the day regardless—perhaps the way the sunlight struck the water would strike Marietta’s artistic fancy and do the job of lifting her mood for her. She certainly hoped so: Marietta’s paintings were something to marvel at, imbued with emotions and perspective.
Sofia herself was in a fine mood, swathed in forest green fabric, gold bangles decorating her wrists and a faint smile etched on her face. There was nothing quite like people-watching to entertain. “There, see that fisherman?” she grinned, starting in on another story, though she knew it would go largely unheard. It was one of her favorite little games: covertly watching someone and their interactions for a while, then making up a story about their life. The stories were often outrageous and unrealistic, but that was the point: these people could do anything. They were free. And that made them excellent puppets for her imagination.
It was halfway through the Fantastic Tale of Chares the Fisherman that Marietta began speaking. For once, Sofia could not be annoyed at the interruption. Finally, her brooding friend was sharing! Instantly, though, her eyes narrowed slightly, stopping their leisurely walk to turn and stare at Marietta properly. She had kissed a man? Drunk? The running away bit was characteristic enough, but Sofia was shocked. When was this? Why was she only now hearing about it? This would require a certain level of delicacy, or she risked Marietta shutting the story and her feelings away again. “Well, hypothetically,” she said wryly, trying to keep her lips from twisting into an excited smile. It was no use telling Marietta that she wouldn’t have run away in the first place. “I would certainly not send a letter of apology. Never be sorry for kissing a man. Unless he was hideous. He should be honored that you kissed him.” She thought for a moment, placing a hand on her friend’s shoulder, “If I were to see him again, hypothetically, I would probably pretend that I only ran away because I wanted to leave him wanting more. Playing coy is important.” Pale green eyes peered at Marietta. She lowered her hand from her friend’s shoulder, adjusting one of her bangles. “This sounds like a fascinating painting, Etta. Please, tell me more.”

Adrestus entered the northern harbor, dressed as a nobleman from head to toe. He was groomed, and while he looked ready for the day, he just wasn’t feeling it. It was beautiful weather and the docks were running smoothly… but he couldn’t get Marietta out of his mind. He didn’t exactly know what happened, but he knew there had been a kiss, and he knew he had walked home alone. With only those memories, he felt like something went wrong. Did he say, do anything to offend Marietta? It was as if it was a nightmare. He really liked Marietta, and at this point, even started to think about courting her, but… what if he had already ruined it before it had even started?
It made his heartbeat at a rapid speed just thinking about it. He fiddled with his clothes in a nervous fashion as his first mate caught up to him, speaking about a contact. Adrestus nodded absentmindedly about it, not really caring to make any decision one way or the other. His father hadn’t spoken yet of his family duties, but he knew it’d be soon, and he’d have less time for business strategy. Even less if he was planning on starting to court someone. Adrestus stopped to look at his first mate, after ignoring him during their walk. 'Whatever you think is best.' He spoke, before his eyes trailed away from his friend.
There she was. Adrestus nodded at his first mate’s response, before touching the other man’s shoulder and telling him goodbye for now. He wanted to catch up to Marietta. He wasn’t sure what he was going to say, or do but… he knew that this was his chance. He noticed Sofia there, too, and almost held back. However, he had enough determination to not let anything scare him off. Moving towards them, Adrestus put on a friendly smile and stopped a few feet away. He didn’t want to appear he was intruding, though at the same time he wanted to be noticed. “Lady Sofia, Lady Marietta,” Adrestus bowed his head, still smiling. He stood up straighter then and shifted his weight, fighting to keep his nervousness hidden.
“Marietta…” He spoke, looking over at his friend who he had recently gotten close to. “Can….Can I…” He glanced over at Sofia, his voice stuttering just a bit. He looked back over at Marietta, his confidence coming back in spirts. “I would like to speak to you,” He announced, before pausing. He reached to run his fingers through his hair nervously and flinched just slightly. “Please?” His voice lowered in volume, and he stepped back a step or two. “Unless…” He looked over at Sofia, finally talking to her. “Is she angry?”

Marietta’s eyebrows furrowed at Sofia’s words. So apologizing was not the correct response? Should Adrestus feel honored that they kissed? Aside from Marietta being of royal blood, she couldn’t see why he would feel honored. Horrified, maybe, uncomfortable for sure, but not honored. But maybe apologizing would be an insult? Maybe he would rather forget the moment ever happened. How did she repair their friendship without further embarrassing the young Lord?
“Play… coy?” Was that possible for Marietta. Could she be aloof? Be chased after? Could she make him want more? She wasn’t even convinced she could make him want anything at all! “I don’t know if that’s ri-”
Her statement was interrupted by a single voice, the very voice she did not want to hear right now. Her eyes widened when she realized that Lord Adrestus was here. What was he doing here in Athenia? Did he not have business in his own province?
Hiccup. Hiccup!
Marietta moved behind Sofia. Her hand pressed to her mouth to stifle her hiccups. “L-Lord Adrestus! Wh-What are you doing her? I-I mean… I mean you are a sailor… a-and we are -hic- at the docks. B-But this is Athenia!”
Why on earth would Marietta take Sofia here when she was trying her best to avoid a sailor. How idiotic could she be? She cursed her brain for not thinking of every possibility. Marietta should have remained locked in her room where there was no danger of running into the heir of Nikolaos.
Her dark grey eyes widened as he continued to speak. He wanted to talk to her? Why? Was he going to yell at her? Or lecture her on her impropriety? No, no Adrestus was far too kind for that. He was going to make fun of her! That was it! The boy always liked teasing Marietta, and typically she could handle it with a blush and few swats to the shoulder. But this would not be something she wanted to hear. Over and over again she replayed that kiss in her mind before seeing the vision of her running away like a coward. Maybe his dad heard of their kiss in public and got mad? Maybe he was here to warn that his father would be speaking to her father! Maybe this was a scandal and the world all knew what a big idiot the Antonis girl was. She was a disappointment to her family and everyone around her, surely!
“A-Angry?” Marietta blinked, her mind returning to reality. “I’m -hic- not angry! I… I…” she trailed off before all of a sudden, “I’m sorry!” tumbled from her lips. Marietta’s hands cupped her mouth. Wait, she was advised not to say that! “I-I mean I’m not sorry! I mean… I mean…” Marietta turned her head towards Sofia. Her heart was pounding so hard that she could hear it echoing in her ears. She needed her help from her friend before she drowned in a sea of shame and humiliation.

Sofia smiled politely at Adrestus, though he hardly seemed to notice her. In fact, he was giving off a strangely hysterical energy and looking right at Mari—oh. As soon as the nobleman opened his mouth, all became clear. She resisted the urge to pinch the bridge of her nose, instead bracing herself for the disaster that was sure to come. It was already far too late to lead Marietta away without appearing rude; there was nothing to be done. Sure enough, moments later she had become a human shield, a wall between the two apparent lovers. Though, really, there was no need for a wall: they were both stuttering messes. Still, if Marietta felt the need to hide, Sofia would oblige. Her dearest friend’s continued sanity was, after all, of the utmost importance.
The two continued fumbling at each other, and while Sofia did not turn around to look at Marietta’s expression, Adrestus appeared nearly desperate. He was trying to appear confident, but Sofia saw right through the weak façade. She would have hoped that Marietta could, too, but her friend seemed to be hiccupping instead. Sofia resisted the urge to roll her eyes as the man finally addressed her, opting instead for a coy, if not suspicious and threatening, smile. “Hullo, Lord Adrestus. As Lady Marietta said, she is not angry. However, if you would like to speak with her, it would be for the best if I stayed within range.” Her eyes narrowed slightly in Adrestus’s direction: he was far from off the hook, even if she was secretly thrilled on Marietta’s behalf. “It would be the least scandalous arrangement, or don’t you agree?”
In truth, despite his merely noble status, Adrestus seemed to Sofia to be a good match for her friend. Kind and polite, charismatic… well, that would not stop her from having a bit of fun with the anxious pair. Slowly, so as not to startle either of them, she sidestepped, revealing Marietta in all her beautiful, terrified glory. Subtly reaching out a hand to stifle Marietta’s trembling, the Marikas woman arched a brow at each of them, “Isn’t it a lovely day? I think I would like to examine that boat more closely.” She pointed to the nearest boat, which was neither particularly fancy nor interesting in any way. It was a warning. An illusion of privacy would be the most they could get. Sofia wouldn’t dream of completely abandoning her friend. Not without a back-up plan, at least. “It really is fantastic craftsmanship.”
The wicked smile had faded, leaving only a glint in Sofia’s pale green eyes and she glided the extra few feet required to ‘examine’ the boat. This would be fun.

Sofia smiled politely at Adrestus, though he hardly seemed to notice her. In fact, he was giving off a strangely hysterical energy and looking right at Mari—oh. Adrestus knew the hiccups were coming. But this time he didn’t laugh because this time, things weren’t really a game. Marietta had ran away from him, and that certainly hadn’t been fun. He narrowed his eyes as she asked why he was there, and he glanced at all the ships in the docks. If she was avoiding him, she had made a poor choice. “I work here, Lady Marietta,” His voice was full of hurt, still not really knowing what was going on. Was she angry with him? He had thought they had a great time together that night. They laughed a lot and while he only remembered parts, he did remember her saying yes to him. He remembered that she had had a good time to. He didnt understand why he had ended up alone. He heard Marietta’s words and he stepped forward. He was stopped by Sofia, and he looked at her wide eyed as it looked like she was protecting Marietta. Protecting her from what? The scene to him just felt so, so wrong. “Did I hurt you?” His voice raised as he became even more sorrowful.
Stayed within range? It sounded like… “I am not the villain here, Sofia! I just want to know what I did.” He tried to explain himself, and took a step back from them both. If Sofia told him to leave he would, but he wouldn’t without trying to see what he did wrong. That was all he wanted to know. He never meant to upset, or hurt Marietta. He just wanted her to be happy. He watched Marietta, trying to see if she wanted him to leave and just didn’t say it. It looked like she had just as much anxiety about it as he did,and it just confused him even more. The nobleman reached up with both hands and rested them against his hair, pulling at it slightly. He didn’t know what to do. He didn’t want to make the situation worse. He glanced at the boat Sofia pointed out, and the nobleman gave her an annoyed expression. He didn’t want to talk about boats. He wanted to talk about Marietta, and why they were acting like he did something horrible. Clearly, he didn’t believe Marietta wasn’t angry. She had to be. She ran away!
He let out a sigh, and, without speaking to Sofia, he moved towards the boat without getting close to the royal ladies. He didn’t want them to think he was angry, or going to do something. He wasn’t. When he got closer to the boat, he made sure he stood with the intent to not be in view of the public eye. He looked towards Sofia. “I just want to know what happened, that’s all.” Adrestus said calmly, but his body language was not at all calm. He was fidgeting with his clothes, staring at Marietta every so often. “She came to my province.” It wasn’t like he had sought after her, she came to him. To him!! “Marietta, why did you leave. I thought you were having fun.” His voice was quiet, and he looked away. “I don’t understand.” He frowned and his expression was of hurt and honestly, he was quite offended. He didn’t really like when people did not like him, especially if it was someone who he really liked himself.

At the words Lady Marietta, her heart sunk. The formality in his tone killed her. He had called her Lady exactly two times since returning home, both in jest. They were close, they were friends, they were beyond the use of a title when in a casual environment. While yes, Marietta did refer to him as Lord quite often, his use of Lady felt a lot more… impersonal.
Perhaps it was her overthinking things, but she could not rid of the notion that he truly was furious with her actions. And as his voice raised, she was more and more sure of this. He had a look of hurt evident across his face, an emotion so blue that his eyes paled in comparison. Marietta was trembling. She loathed confrontation, and seeing the pain Adrestus was under was that much worse. Did kissing her hurt him that much?
Marietta started panicking even worse when Sofia sidestepped her, revealing the trembling girl. Her hiccups got harder. She clutched her sides as they began to cramp in pain. Marietta hesitated before walking over to the boat too, where it was more secluded and they could speak. At least Sofia was remaining, and could hopefully speak for her when words inevitably failed her. Conflict was not her forte, and Marietta didn’t know if her desire to run beat her desire to vomit right now.
“I… I did have fun!” Marietta said with her eyes wide. They glistened with unspilled tears. Marietta very rarely cried. She could count in one hand the times she’s cried, all usually in the privacy of her own room. But this was a moment that was truly grating at her. She was guilty, and she may lose a dear friend because of it. “I… I did. It was fun, Adrestus. I’m so sorry.”
Her voice cracked. She didn’t know how to go about this. How could she make it better? Was there any salvaging this? “I… I behaved horribly didn’t I?” She asked quietly, tears still remaining unshed despite the constant stinging. “I… I shouldn’t have done that to you. It was unfair. You were drunk, and I’m of royal blood. How could you have said no?” She bit her lip before it too began to tremble. She took a step back, further increasing the distance between the two of them. “I put you in a horrible position that I never should have in the first place. You deserve so much more respect than that, Adrestus. And to cause such a scandal in public? I deserve the shame that comes from it, but not you. You didn’t want for that. Your mind was riddled with alcohol. If you were sober things would have gone completely differently. And if I were sober I would have had the forethought to truly keep your desires in mind. I wouldn’t have acted so… selfishly.” Marietta ran her fingers through her hair, tugging at the strands anxiously. “I can’t begin to apologize enough, my Lord. Words will never truly cover how horrible I feel and the misdeed I did that night. I shouldn’t have kissed you. That was far too selfish of me.”
She knew Sofia said never to apologize, but it didn’t feel right. She had to, in hopes that they could forget that night happened, and continue their friendship. She didn’t want Adrestus to remain upset. She wanted her friend back.

He remembered bits and pieces but was confused about the whole thing. He remembered faintly about her laughter, her smile… he had lost the game of poker, but they had had so much fun. Yet it had ended so abruptly, with no clear explanation as to why. She had practically run away from him, and the sailor could not figure out why. Was it something he said? Was it the kiss? Was it because he had been drunk? He didn’t remember much, but he didn’t remember doing anything wrong. She had to have said yes to what had happened…. He started asking questions, and her responses only made him have more. He felt hurt even at the idea of hurting her or making her angry. If he got an answer as to why she had run away, maybe he could make it better. He narrowed his eyes in deep confusion as she apologized once more, the sailor still not understanding. She started to speak again, and slowly he started to realize what was happening.
The look of hurt never left his expression, but he felt water in his eyes as he listened to her. Her words started to make sense, and his heart grew heavy for her. Of course. Adrestus had never thought that Marietta had forced him to get drunk, but it would make sense as to why she was upset now. Nothing had happened that day that Adrestus hadn’t already wanted. Sure, he had lost but… he wanted to make Marietta happy. He had wanted to kiss her. In fact, he had always wanted to kiss her, ever since the day that he had said goodbye. She started talking about scandal, and Adrestus sniffed and shook his head.
“I don’t give a fuck about what people say.” Adrestus called out, before flickering his eyes over to her. “Marietta, stop for a moment.” She seemed to keep talking, but Adrestus wanted to speak. “You are not selfish, it’s me who is.” His expression towards her grew of fondness, hinting at what he was about to say. “I really like you. I really do.” Adrestus confessed. “I’ve been wanting to kiss you…. For a long time. You didn’t force me into anything. I was worried that I had tricked you because...I don’t know, I’ve been thinking about kissing you for a long, long time.” He bowed his head, a bit embarrassed of his confession and scared that she would tell him off.
“I’m sorry for being a coward about it.” He wiped his eyes with his fingers, berating himself for not telling his true feelings about it now. “Ever since I got here I just… my feelings for you have grown. Nothing happened that I hadn’t already wanted to do. I have great fun with you, it’s like everything bad that has happened melts away when you are with me. You are so smart that… Marietta, you are perfect.” He paused in between his words, taking deep breaths as he confessed his truths. He didn’t know what she would say, or react, but he at least had to get this out now. She could do with it what she wished.
“I don’t care if you are royal, and I’m just a noble...I know I have feelings for you. Strong feelings.” Adrestus looked up towards Marietta. “I wish to court you.” As he said the words, he froze for a couple of seconds. He didn’t know if Marietta would walk away again, but he glanced towards Sofia. He knew what he had said was yet another scandal entirely, and if anything, Sofia would be the one to tell him off first. “If I had been sober that day…. I may have not kissed you. But I would still have thought about it. I have always been scared because I never knew if you liked me that way yourself. If you don’t please say so. I don’t want to bother you, or scare you, or make you angry, or anything like that Marietta.”
He glanced over at Sofia. “If I am out of line, tell me so.” His expression was of genuine concern, not for himself but for them. He didn’t want to make the situation worse. The truth had been bound to come out one way or another. That time just happened to be now.

Oh. This would not be fun. Sofia was horrified: instead of adorably nervous, Marietta and Adrestus were now depressed wrecks. It was a disaster, and all Sofia could do was stand and watch. There was a guilty knot already forming in her stomach. She should have left Marietta hide. She should have told Adrestus to go. She should have taken the heat for her friend, rather than let the encounter devolve into such a sad, sad calamity.
With eyes nearly as wide as Marietta’s, her gaze flicked quickly between the pair, heart aching on each of their behalf. They were so clearly in love with each other, but each stumbling word they spoke made it worse, driving knives through each chest. Sofia was starting to piece together what must have happened, but it was too little, too late. Adrestus had the most pained, pitiful look in his clear blue eyes and Marietta seemed to be on the verge of tears. That hurt worst of all. Sofia could not recall a single time that she’d seen her dearest friend cry. Anxiety was nothing new, but this was a new level of pain, and Sofia could not protect her from it. Not this time.
For once in her life, Sofia of Marikas was speechless. She should say something, anything, to stop this, to get them to realize that everything was just one huge misunderstanding. But she was frozen in place, feeling like the worst friend in the world. When she was frozen in a huge tree as a child, Marietta had gone to fetch help. But there was nothing Sofia could do to make this better but be there in the moments that were sure to follow, whatever happened. And then, oh, and then… finally. Adrestus got it. Marietta was still stumbling over apologies, convinced that she had taken advantage of the sea-faring lord, but Adrestus spoke louder, obviously still anxious, but stronger and steadier with each word. And there it was. He wanted to court Marietta. Sofia’s heart nearly burst with relief. Oh, she knew she should disapprove. He was below Marietta’s royal station. He was a sailor, for gods’ sake. But Marietta very clearly wanted this, she was just petrified that Adrestus didn’t. And wasn’t it true that, given the chance, she herself would have wanted a situation just like this?
It felt wrong to speak, but Adrestus had finished talking and was staring at her, waiting for her verdict. This was their moment, and while the tiniest piece of her burned like dying embers with envy, her overwhelming feeling was joy on her friend’s behalf. “You are far from out of line in my opinion, Lord Adrestus,” she said quietly, faint smile appearing on her face. This time, it was devoid of any hint of mischief. “But I am not the one whose voice matters here.” Looking fondly at Marietta, Sofia bowed her head slightly to defer to the Antonis woman. Saying anything more would not be right. Most likely, she owed them both an apology when all of this was over. But for now, she waited with baited breath, praying to the gods for a happy ending. Of all the people in Athenia—in the world—Marietta deserved happiness most of all.

Marietta couldn’t understand what she was hearing. This didn’t make any sense. Adrestus wanted this? He wanted her? But why? How could he want her when someone like Sofia was standing near? Sofia who was beautiful and charming and adventurous and kind. Marietta was none of that. She wasn’t beautiful or charming, she was a coward, and she was too afraid to talk to ever be considered kind. Marietta dreamed of the sea but would never venture forth to fulfill this fantasy for the dangers that lurked in the waters frightened her too much. A drop of blood made her nauseous, and she was afraid of the dark for gods sake! How could Adrestus want her?
For a split moment a dark thought entered her mind. What if he wanted her for the Antonis name? That was one thing Marietta had that few others did. She had riches, she had a name that had a long lineage of royalty. Marietta’s family had connections all over Greece, some that would benefit Adrestus.
But no, Adre was not that kind of man. As soon as the thought entered, it vanished, and Marietta’s shining eyes widen. He wanted her and she did not know why, but he did want her. He was telling the truth and she was sure of it. She felt her heart soar. He wished to court her! And while this was certainly not marrying up (should it ever get that far) as she was sure her family would prefer, they would be overjoyed nonetheless. Because Adrestus of Nioklaos was someone who made her happy, happier than anyone has ever made her. He made her thump heart wildly and her breath catch just by being near. He was everything she ever wanted and more.
But it was Sofia’s voice that broke her from her stupor. It wasn’t her opinion that mattered, that was true it was… Marietta’s. She was the one who could make a decision here, no one else. She couldn’t hide behind her friends, or sisters, or parents. This was… Marietta’s choice to make.
“Really? You… You like me?” She bit her lip, but a small smile was tugging on the corners. “I… I really like you, Adre. I do. I went there to see you because I do like you. I… I kissed you because I wanted to, I really wanted to. It was all I’ve been thinking ab-”
Marietta cut off. She had taken nervous steps back, not realizing that there was no longer floor beneath her. A small startled sound escaped from her lips as she plunged down into the cold ocean. She had walked right off the dock. As she fell, she reached towards her friend who had been ‘looking’ at ships. She managed to grab her arm, but it was not enough to keep her from completely disappearing into the ocean.
A wave crashed over Marietta. Then another one. She knew how to swim, albeit not very well, but the shock of the cold, sudden water seemed to lock her muscles in place. Her body had gasped in surprise, and a sudden taste of salt water filled her mouth and entered her lungs. Her head bobbed above the water for just a moment as she coughed, before another wave had moved over her and she was back kicking, trying to surface, and yet falling deeper and deeper.

Adrestus had finally confessed his true feelings for Marietta. He wished to court her- and Marietta deserved to know. He didn’t care that he wasn’t royal and that there could be a backlash with scandal. All he really wanted was for Marietta to know so that, if she felt the same, they could be more then just friends. Or, if she didn’t feel that, he could go on his way. He looked to Sofia, not really knowing what to expect. He had just told her friend that he wanted to court her, so perhaps Sofia had some say about it. He knew that Sofia would mind about a scandal. Sofia had been quiet as he had spoken, so he felt a knot tie as she looked at him. He felt himself relax as she told him he wasn’t out of line, and for the first time, he had hope. Hope that Marietta and he could be together. But of course, Marietta’s response was the one that mattered the most. “Thank you, Sofia. Your words mean a lot.”
Adrestus pulled his arms behind his back and swayed when she spoke, hanging on Marietta’s every word. She could say no, she didn’t wish for him to court her, but Adrestus prayed to the gods that she would say yes. He smiled softly as she seemed struck by his words. “Yes, it’s true.” He really did like her. The nobleman stepped forward towards her, feeling even more confident that it was looking like she liked the idea of being courted. His eyes gleamed as she said that she had gone to his province to see him and that she had liked the kiss. Adrestus looked incredibly happy and didn’t even notice that she had started to move. What Adrestus wanted to do was bring her into his arms, now that it was looking like they were actually going to do this. Just the idea of being able to potentially kiss Marietta even more then when they were drunk excited him!
“Marietta, I…” He started, smiling from ear to ear. His smile changed to fear as things happened all at once. Hypnotized by Marietta’s confession, he hadn’t seen the royal woman take a wrong step, and Adrestus was not fast enough to stop it. “MARIETTA!” His voice raised in utter fright as he heard the dreaded splash, and he was just fast enough to catch Sofia’s waist in order to stop her from following Marietta into the water. Adrestus took all his strength and heaved Sofia away from the side of the docks. Adrestus made sure Sofia was in a safe spot. “Sit down, please.” The sailor asked her in a slightly more panicked voice, not wanting Sofia to stumble in shock, nor did he want her to try to save Marietta and fall in anyways. Adrestus, after taking a big gulp of air, picked up his legs and ran from where he had put Sofia, and stretched his arms out far as the sailor dove into the ocean. He hit the water with a clean splash as if he had been diving most of his life, which he had. In the water, he regretted keeping his clothes on. It was heavy weight, and it made it a little bit harder to be fast.
He kicked his legs and grabbed Marietta by the shoulders and hauled her up to the surface. He prayed to Poseidon to protect them as he did so. Still holding his breath underwater, he pulled her up more over the waves, to get her relief from the salty liquid. Adrestus then moved his arms and legs with force beneath the surface, with Marietta’s head and shoulders out of the water, towards where Sofia was. With another push he forced Marietta up and over to lay on the wood on the docks, resting his arms on the wood. Adrestus was panting heavy, as he was still fighting against his heavy clothes. He looked towards Marietta, and realized that he had to check if water was in his lungs. Adrestus took heavy breaths and let Poseidon bring him down to the water again.
Adrestus floated in one spot for a moment before jumping back onto the dock with a loud grunt, this time leaning on the dock with his torso. He groaned as he pulled his body out of the water with his hands, and he crawled over to where Marietta was. “Marietta?” He asked to see if she would respond. Adrestus, still laying on his stomach, quickly turned her head to the side with his hands, to make sure any water was still there that needed to come out. He moved his body closer to her, still tired, and laid a hand across Marietta’s body. “Marietta? Can you hear me?” Adrestus spoke a little louder, hoping that she would be responsive. He looked to Sofia. “She’s breathing.”

The little smile on Sofia’s face continued to grow, no matter how much she tried to contain it. Marietta seemed to be saying yes, and Andre looked so pleased—stunned, of course, but pleased—and everything was looking bright again. In truth, she nearly started applauding. The pair had hilariously similar reactions, fumbling unsurely over each word. Yes, Sofia approved of this courtship. How could she not? But, of course, things could never go that smoothly.
It happened in slow motion. Marietta, smiling nervously, finally confessing her feelings to the sailor in front of them. Marietta, falling off the dock. Marietta’s hand, closing around her wrist as she fell. Her own balance failing as she slid towards the water, too. Luckily for Sofia, Adrestus was a skilled sailor and had much better reactions times than she herself did. Next thing she knew, she was sitting in the middle of the dock as per the nobleman’s instructions, frozen. It was agony, watching Adrestus dive into the murky water after her best friend, who had yet to surface. That last fact was what really scared her. Marietta could swim, but instead she had sunk like an anchor with no sign of emerging. Water could be such a cruel element and Sofia was not at all sure what would happen when Adrestus found her.
At last, at last. Sofia sighed heavily, forcing the stale air from her lungs and crawling the short distance to where Adrestus had deposited Marietta, cold and unmoving. She looked terrible and dead. Sofia reached out and took her friends hand, and it gave neither of them any comfort. She scanned the surrounding area and saw no sign of anyone remotely qualified to help them. Hopefully, Adrestus knew as much about how to revive a drowned person as he did how to retriever their body, because Sofia felt entirely useless. And she was still in shock, too, at how such an endearing end to a conversation could turn dire so suddenly. Adrestus, finally emerging from the water, looked as grim as she felt. She joined him in calling Marietta’s name, clinging to her friend’s hand like it would revive her.
She’s breathing. For the second time, Sofia heaved a sigh of relief, shaking her head to try and clear herself of the stupor that had prevented her from noticing. Yes, Marietta’s chest was rising and falling, shallow and slow but alive. “Oh, thank the gods,” she murmured, eyes flickering between the two, still panicked. “What can we do? What can I do? Should I fetch a physician and a carriage?” Sofia started to rise, but now she felt like she had an anchor in her stomach, keeping her there at Marietta’s side. Sofia always prided herself on her loyalty and devotion to her dearest friends, but now she was deadweight, unable to improve the situation in the slightest. It was a horrible feeling. Was this how it felt to be friends with her, watching her flirt with danger for nothing more than a momentary rush? Sofia shuddered, green eyes littered with shame as she stared down at Marietta’s face. “We’re here, Marietta,” she murmured, giving her friend’s hand a squeeze. “We’re here.”

I know how to swim.
Marietta was not a strong swimmer. She preferred calm waters, never the ocean, but she knew how to swim at the very least. Perhaps it was the shock of suddenly being in the water, or it was the strong ocean waves, or the chilling cold that froze her muscles, but Marietta was sinking. The waves were pulling her back, deeper into the ocean, and she could do nothing but close her eyes, body refusing to listen to her mind.
I’m drowning… this is my end…
She shouldn’t have run away. She shouldn’t have apologized. Why did she apologize? She should have jumped into his arms, not the ocean behind her. Why did Marietta have to be so cowardly? Why couldn’t she live life in the moment, live life happily just as her sisters and friend did? Why must she suffer by her hand, no one else’s?
Her thoughts became silent, lungs aflame, and her body stopped trying to fight her way up. She was gone… but then a hand reached out to her. It pulled her back to the surface. She was bobbing above the water now until she made it back to the dock.
We’re here, Marietta. We’re here.
Marietta’s eyes flew open and she rolled to her side, coughing. Water spewed out from her mouth and she was gasping for breath. Gods, she was nearly gone. Marietta gave her friend’s hand a weak squeeze back. She was shaking and cold, the Panamos waters were all too unfriendly. It did not help that there was a wind on this day, chilling her even more.
“Gods, I’m sorry,” she said as she continued to gasp for air. She looked at Sofia, at Adrestus, with her wide grey eyes. She had worried them, clearly she did.
And then her heart broke when she saw Adrestus laying right next to her, his hand on her body, Marietta threw his arms around him, burying his face in the crook of his neck. “I’m sorry, Adre. I’m so, so sorry.” She whispered against him. “Thank you so much. Gods, thank you. You saved me, Adre.”
She knew at that moment that this was right. She wanted to court him. She needed to court him. Everything, as if it was destined, was falling into place. And for once, with confidence, Marietta gave him a soft and quick kiss. Then she looked up at Sofia, eyes shining with happiness. And not caring about the fact that she was soaking and shivering, she threw her arms around her best friend. “I’m so sorry for scaring you, Sof.” She said. “I shouldn’t have been that careless. But I’m okay!” Well, mostly. Her throat was aching, and her chest still very much hurt. And she would likely fall ill from the chill, but she was alive. And that, at the end of the day, was all that mattered. She was alive, she was happy, and she was with two of the people that she cared about most in this world.
Coughing once more, and with a shiver running down her spine she looked at the pair- her now boyfriend and her best friend. "We should get out of here." Her voice was quiet, but despite what just happened... she had the largest smile in the world.
