The guest suites were not a place Evras visited very often. Whenever she was in the capitol, and residing in the main Kotas residences, the princess tended to keep to the main house, and very rarely headed over to the other wing unless guests were around that she had to entertain. The last time she had been there with a slew of servants with her was when Vangelis had returned with surprise royal Taengean visitors, but ever since she had been on bedrest by the physician, the princess had barely seen the world beyond her bedchamber.
But today, her steps were with purpose.
The men were due to leave for war in a couple of days, and having just seen the physician two days prior, the princess had practically been strapped to her bed under the orders of the Queen, but she had stressed the importance of the visit to the servants that now trailed behind her. They had agreed to Evras to allow her for a brief respite, but she had an exact destination she was headed for, especially after the conversation she had had with Zanon the night before, where her husband shared information he had discovered from his own brother.
Information her own sister never saw fit to tell her.
Her outfit was simple, a day chiton in pale mauve and silver trimmings, with no strappings whatsoever aside from the fibulae holding it in place over her shoulders. Unlike the public persona Evras usually put on for the people of Midas, looking perfectly coifed, this was a look Evras wore at home, loose outfits and barefooted, with her hair loosely braided over her shoulders. But her steps were anything but light and easy.
Purposeful and with a bit of anger in them, Evras walked briskly with one hand over her swell of her belly, until she arrived at the door the servant led her to. There, the woman hesitated. This was the sister she's trusted her life, who had defended her when their eldest sibling and father wanted to force Evras into a corner and betray a husband she did not wish to. This was the sister who had fought her battles, the first before she turned to when she was terrified she would lose another child before they could be born.
Was it all a lie?
Taking a deep breathe, Evras lifted a hand, knocked, but did not wait for an answer as she pushed open the door to find her sister. The moment her eyes settled on Thea's form, Evras's gaze narrowed as she entered and settled with her hands on her hips. "Is there something you've forgotten to inform me over the last.... oh, say eight years?"

Thea found no sleep that night, instead occupying herself with pacing the rooms of the Guest suites, disjointed and all but disconnected from the Kotas Estate. Once, she slept in these rooms. It had been in the days following Dion's birth. That night, even, the rooms had been prepared for her, but she hardly did more than walk around in them or lay in the bed, sleepless for being in a new location.
Hours had passed and she had done everything from scrutinize the artwork to open every inch of storage to taking a seat in each chair in the room. Anything to keep her mind and her body busy as the anxieties washed through her. Her hands fidgeted with the rings there, spinning them around in circles, sliding them off and then on again.
There were plenty of windows in the suite, but she kept them all but drawn, a few cracks in the curtains to let in the light of the dawning day. For a few hours, she tried to lay in the bed, but found herself moving about again. A meal had been brought to her, but all she could do was nibble on some fruit which felt as though it stuck to her throat.
A knock at the door startled her and dread washed over her. It began.
Was it the King? The Queen? Zanon? There was an endless train of visitors that she could have in this position, at least, limited to those under the roof. How many days would it be before she heard from Nethis or her Father? Or Mihail? There was no knowing.
Perhaps, she thought, if she did not answer they would go away. Surely, if they knew she was here, they knew about her condition. Anyone with a sense of decency would leave a woman in her condition to rest...
But, instead the door flung open, and Thea found herself on her feet as her body argued between its instincts to fight or flee. Thea's expression was still and steady, though her eyes wider than usual as the dread and anticipation filled her to the brim like a vase.
Thea's shock increased further at her sister's words. Yes, she was expecting news of her pregnancy and new residence to lead to her sister's ire, but...how in the name of the gods did she know about the length of the affair? Not even Nethis knew about that! With her mouth waggling open soundlessly and her eye blinking rapidly in shock, Thea made a few stilted sounds. She was prepared to at least confess to the tryst following Vangelis' temporary ascension to the throne, but this was not a conversation she was ready to have.
"How- How did you...?" Thea stammered out quickly, glancing away awkwardly for a moment before seeing the uncomfortable stance her sister took. It was not a true avoidance of the topic, but Thea did not want her sister to remain standing at this point in her pregnancy, particularly not while this angry. "Evras, sit. Please. I'll...I'll explain. Just sit."
Thea crossed to the door at least and managed to close it shut, a bit too harshly to the point where it echoed down the corridor. Taking a moment with her back turned to Evras, she swallowed and recalculated the way she was going to explain this. Taking a few breaths, her eyes scanning the air as if to find some help or guidance there, she turned to face her sister in profile.
"It...it's a long story, but it is a true story," Thea started, still standing by the door with her hand on the latch as if it were to help keep her upright. Steeling herself and straightening her spine, she felt a small well of courage in her gut, or at least the shield she could throw up in place of it so her sister's words could not hurt her. If she claimed all of it, almost defiantly, then she could hide behind whatever image her sister formed of her in her mind.
"I did not forget to tell you anything, Evras. I told no one. We told no one. On purpose."

"I did not forget to tell you anything, Evras. I told no one. We told no one. On purpose."
Evras's gaze all but dared Thea to try and lie to her. While she held no hard anger at her sister, a large part of her current state came from the fact that she now realized Thea had actively withheld information from her for almost a decade, when she had been the sister Evras had told almost everything to. She had trusted Thea, yet now it made Evras wonder if perhaps, she did not get the same trust back.
The awkward glance was more then enough confirmation Evras needed to know her husband had indeed relayed the correct information, and that merely drove the knife in deeper.
Without a word, she picked up the edges of her dress and moved to sit on the edges of a kline near to the door, not at all eager to act with the same familiarity she used to act with her closest sister. Had this been any other occasion, Evras would've been happy to run right in, eschewing all forms of formalities to flop on Thea's bed and demand for information, but now the princess looked straight as a ramrod as she sat, her back stiff and her lips unsmiling. Her hand remained splayed over her belly, but that was the only thing that differed from a stoic seated position one would usually take, not showing any outward affect despite her sister's obvious discomfort.
Not wanting to be the one to break the silence, the dark-haired female waited till her sister started, but frowned as she paused halfway through, a little but of her tough veneer cracking when she asked. "Why?" Her voice shook, more from hurt then anything, but also a wealth of many questions behind that one word. Why hide it from her? Did she not trust her enough? Was it because Thea had other, more nefarious plans that was in line with their eldest siblings?
Biting her bottom lip to try and control the light quiver in her voice, Evras turned away from her sister, not wanting Thea's actions to affect what she wanted to say or do, or even feel. She had a soft heart, it had always been part of Evras's personality. She felt deeply for everyone and anyone around her, and while it was a part of her that their father deemed as weak, it wasn't something she wanted to let go of either. To Evras, it helped her connect with people, understand them more... but it definitely did not align with the plans their tyrant father had. "Was it.... Did Nethis and father put you up to this as well?"

For bearing the standard of courtier calm and Thanasi stoicism, Thea found her nerves fraying slightly with the unfamiliarity of it all. Her body seemed to want to reject most everything she took in that might have brought her comfort, and other forms of distraction being forbidden on Vangelis' orders given her condition. Usually able to keep mind and body occupied, she felt much like a creature trapped in a cage here.
No doubt, Evras would be the first of many to enter into this den and ask her the same lines of questioning. Dread and annoyance pooled in her gut at she made the mental roster of names in her mind, all the while keeping her composure as her lily-soft sister managed to pin her with a glare.
Ah, she may be a Kotas Princess, but she was still a Thanasi deep within.
Noting that Evras shifted to the kline and left little room for her to join alongside as they would have done under certain circumstances, it was made quite clear that for this moment, she was in the presence of Princess Evras of Kotas, not her sister. And that was entirely fair. This had now become a Kotas issue, not just a Thanasi one. Part of her wanted to ask Evras to not be that way, but it did not even take the space of a breath before Evras' hissed word relayed more of the hurt and betrayal of a sister than of a Thanasi-leery Kotas.
At Evras questions, back to back of one another, Thea scoffed a laugh and shook her head, not yet letting her eyes meet Evras' for a moment.
"Why? For that very reason, Evras. Don't you see?" Thea's eyes narrowed, as if truly analyzing whether or not Evras understood. Shaking her head and scoffing, she guided herself to a seat adjacent to the kline, "It was not for anyone to know - not you, not Nethis, not Father. No one. For once, it was something entirely of my own, simply because I wanted it. I do not regret my choice in doing as I wished or in keeping it secret. At all."
Did she regret where it landed her? Well, that was to be seen.
Her eyes shot over to Evras again, a defensive glint in them. Yes, she held the same softness of demeanor as Evras, which is why they got on so well, but they were still not one in the same. In court, Thea spoke little, but between the two of them.
"Everyone has secrets, Evras. To think otherwise is foolish." Her brow quirked to her sister slightly, as if silently remarking that, though they spoke of much, there was likely a lot that Evras had not told her as well. Shifting her demeanor slightly she released a breath and leaned forward, straightening her own spine as she laid out what she was to say.
"Now, I want to make a few things perfectly clear, since this has made its way out into the open. Vangelis and I hold no love for one another, not in the same sense as you and Zanon. Our 'connection' was purely that of desire and convenience and...enjoyment." A lightly devilish curl of amusement tugged at her upper lip. If Evras wanted to know now, well, Thea could tell her the details in depth. However, given the look of bewildered disgust on her sister's face, Thea had a feeling that was not at all what she was after. "We avoided this for years. We were careful because we never wanted this. But...the tonic did not take, nor the abortive. I still do not know why."
Thea's expression grew pensive for a moment, the clear frustration of having been foiled in something she had taken for granted drawing her eyes away from the steady gaze she had trained on Evras. It was no secret that Thea had a deep devotion for the gods. In these hours of seclusion, she had considered that her recent straying away from the rampant worship of Dionysus towards what she felt was the guiding hand of Apollo in her recording of herbs and tonics could have angered her long-time patron god. Could this all have been retribution? Why this though? Thea knew there was no use trying to understand the games the gods played with mortals, but it did not make the disruption of their machinations any less frustrating to her.
"Regardless. This is were we find ourselves."
Her eyes turned back to Evras, assessing her reactions. Thea had been alone with her thoughts for some time and these words in various orders and spilled out from her. There would be others words of various levels of acceptance and confession to be given and administered to whoever demanded such explanations of her, but Evras was different. Right now, Evras would hear it all, as impossible at it seemed.
With a slight smirk, as if trying to soften the deluge of information she just gave to Evras, she softly added, "You know...not even Nethis knows how long it has been going on. I suspect only you, Zanon, Vangelis, and myself are the ones who know."

Yes, Evras had always been the softest of all her sister's. She did not have the iron clad determination that Thea showed, nor the great ambition of Nethis. She didn't even have the conniving way in which Dysius thought, nor Mihail's ways in manipulating words - but what Evras seemed to have inherited from their mother, was kindness in droves. She however, also had a stubborn presistence in seeing things through, be it good or bad, and making sure things got done, and she was unlikely to leave her sister's temporary residence in what was her in-law's manor, before she got her answers.
She really didn't want to be angry at Thea. Of all their siblings, Thea had been the one person Evras could've trusted and relied on throughout this hazardous period, when she already had many different strains of tension to deal with. To find out that Thea was the root cause of another of it was a crushing blow to a time of great uncertainty already.
Hearing Thea's explanation though, for a brief spurt of a moment, Evras hated to admit it, but she could... sort of, understand. Hadn't she lived her whole life under the thumb of her sister and father? That disastrous dinner they had a few weeks ago had been the first time she had spoken out against their controlling father, but had it not been for the Queen and her husband stepping in, that would've been the first and last time, for Evras being Evras, would've quietly returned to the Thanasi household every evening to do as he had bidded. He may be a tyrant, but Dionysios was their father, and it took alot for a child to completely disown their parent, something Evras still wasn't at the level to... at least, not yet.
Her brows furrowed, and she was so innocent in that when Thea indirectly called her foolish for thinking there would be no secrets between sisters, a pang of hurt crossed her chest. But wasn't it true? Perhaps then, she shouldn't feel so guilty for keeping the myriad of secrets from her own siblings then. Maybe she had been the one being stupid all this while, feeling like she was betraying her siblings whenever she spoke of them to her husband, and to his family. Maybe all this while, she had been the silly one to think loyalty was a trait that went both ways, as was trust and honesty.
Quickly hiding the flash of hurt in her eyes, Evras steeled her back, intending to return to that train of thought later, but turned her focus back on Thea as she continued speaking, even if her frown was now a little deeper, her blue-green eyes a little less innocent, and a little harder then they were before.
She couldn't stay as quiet, as submissive, as she always had been. Everyone grew.
"Could your tonic have been old?" she asked, more in curiosity then anything. Evras had seen instances where when one tried to use herbs or tinctures left out for too long, the effects seemed to be less then desired, or may even have an adverse effect instead, just like how food turned bad when left out in undesirable conditions for too long. There was no sense in berating Thea, for as she had said, this was where they found themselves now.
Raising a brow when Thea gave a smirk, Evras finally rolled her eyes accompanied with a wry smile. "What did she say when she found out about this? I can't imagine she was overly sad. And Father?" she asked, curious. She had not seen their father in over three weeks, ever since she had stalked out. She had heard from the grapevine, that their eldest sister had been on the receiving end of their father's fury over her outspokenness, and for that Evras was thankful. That was something she'd have to bring up with Nethis later - but she had no wish to return to the Thanasi household for now.

That was something she'd have to bring up with Nethis later - but she had no wish to return to the Thanasi household for now.
Thea watched as every thought and feeling Evras had played across her face, like staged performers in a show. It was as if she could see the words play unspoken across her sister's lips, as if she spoke each thought aloud. After a lifetime together, Thea knew Evras' gutpunch reactions to most things. In fact, that was partially why she laid her own revelations out so blatantly, for those reactions.
Satisfied that her piece was said, she eased in the way she sat for only the briefest moment before her sister's question drew a frown across her features...
...why hadn't the tonic worked?
The question was one she had asked herself ever since she realized her condition. For years, she had used the same measurements and herbs, consistently keeping them stocked in her own, personal apothecary in her chambers. Nothing had changed. Nothing! It felt like a failure on her part, and the dark part in the back of her mind almost mocked her, finding this a suitable punishment for such idiocy, even. Still, she knew her own meticulous nature, particularly when it came to the upkeep of the craft that had nearly personified her adult life. Her knowledge was something that others had looked to - even as seen by Zanon calling for her on the night Vangelis was poisoned.
This failure made her question herself more than anything else.
"I do not know," Thea finally replied, her voice dark and bitter at the admission, "When I realized, I went to Nethis for something to completely rid myself of the issue...like some careless commoner whelp." She spat out the self-insult as if she were in fact speaking of some filth-covered whore. After all, she had the means to both prevent and remove the issue, yet none of it worked. "And that failed as well."
Thea did not tell her the state in which Vangelis found her, prepared to do damage to herself in order to rid herself of the issue. That would remain only between the two of them til the day she died, as far as she was concerned. If he even realized what nearly happened...
It was fortunate that Evras took the baited comment and smirked at the rare moment of Nethis having one pulled over on her. But, in answering Evras, there was still bitterness on her tongue as she scoffed, taking dark amusement in turn, as she would have if it had been someone other than herself in this situation.
"Oh, you could practically smell the smug satisfaction of victory off of her," Thea replied, rolling her eyes and sighing bitterly, but somehow still holding a smile, "It was she who told Vangelis, who then sought me out and brought me back here. If she has told Father, then I have yet to hear anything of it." With that, she gestured to the room around them, as if to lead that to the end of the tale.
Thea released a heavy sigh, having said her piece before her own eyes drifted down her sister's form, the swell of her belly having grown even in just the passing few days since the fateful dinner. There was a slight clench in her chest at the sight of her, knowing that, in time, she would not look so different. Except, within her womb, likely grew the next heir of Colchis...
"How are you faring?" Thea blurted, in an attempt to wipe away her own worry of the changes known and unknown before her. "It will not be long now.."
There was a moment's pause for her sister's response, when a thought crossed her mind.
"I trust you will tell the others." She used a forced blithe tone "It will be sheer agony to tell each one in turn. I am certain I will have my fair share of discomfort in the days to come."

Evras raised a brow at the fact that despite a tonic and a concoction by Nethis to rid Thea of a babe, both ad failed in quick sucession which had led Thea to her position today. The Thanasi sisters, whilst it being untrue of them being witches, had earned their reputation purely because they were good at tonics and herbal concoctions. That both her elder sisters, who were far better then Evras at matters of herbs and tonics, had failed in such a matter, was surprising to Evras, and it registered in her eyes.
Curious as to what had occured, or perhaps the babe was just extremely strong and eager to live. Of course, having been through a few miscarriages herself, Evras couldn't imagine wanting to be rid of a babe. The one she carried now was so precious, it made her nervous even when the idea of losing an unborn child presented itself.
For Nethis to be absolutely delighted that Thea now carried a child of the crown prince was absolutely no surprise to her however. It was not surprising that her eldest sister was ecstatic that they now had a direct link to the throne. While much of their hopes had been riding on Evras, there was no doubt her sister and father was getting disappointed as Evras made it clear she didn't wish for Dion to resume a spot on the throne.
"I don't know if Father would remember, judging by his state, even if she did tell him." the dark haired princess mused curiously. Their father's mind came and went, and no doubt after his outburst just a few weeks ago, she doubted Dionysios even remembered what he had commanded his children to do.
Shifting in her seat as Thea asked after her own wellbeing, Evras subconsciously laid a hand over the small swell of her belly, the smile that was soft as it was loving appearing each time she spoke of her unborn child. "Tired, but that is to be expected. The physician has asked me to remain abed, so I am bored. Do you mind visiting?" she asked, although she wondered if Zanon would have something to say about her sister visited. No doubt, her husband wasn't happy with Thea's state right now. That Zanon didn't lump Evras together with Thea's condition was already a boon Evras thanked the Gods for... but she could really use some company when ensconced in the room all day.
Momentarily surprised when Thea tasked her with telling the others, she blinked a few times, before her lips twisted in thought. "I'm sure Nethis has done that part for you. I doubt Dysius wouldn't know. Mihail however.... I don't know if I wish to send a pigeon to him, with such a news. Plus, the news itself may disorient him. I think we'd want him to keep his senses for now." she murmured thoughtfully, knowing Mihail's lack of experience in war meant he needed every streak of luck any God saw fit to give him at this point.
Pausing to allow some silence to marinade between them as Evras processed her thoughts, she trusted Thea to not have the supposed intentions her husband thought her to have, but the sting of betrayal of not being told of the ongoing relationship her sister had with her brother-in-law was still fresh. It would likely fade in a few days, but for now, Evras still pondered her next actions, before she turned to cover Thea's hands with hers, giving it a brief pat. "Do let me know if you need anything, would you? I should return to my chambers before Zanon realizes where I am." she said with a wry smile.

Thea all but rolled her eyes at the thought of her father, knowing that simply thinking about it would simply add another layer of frustration to her current situation. Who could even predict how he would react in the end, even lucid? For all he knew, given recent events and the return of King Tython, the thought of another child wedding anyone of the Kotas name might send him into a rage, as opposed to the logical 'victory' of having their blood one step closer to the throne.
Who knew, anymore.
It was clear, though, that Evras had at least part of the answers she sought from Thea. Though Thea expected blame for her condition, she was surprised at Evras knowing the details of the hidden affair - more specifically the length of it.
As the conversation turned towards Evras' more advanced pregnancy, as well as her newfound restrictions in order to care for the babe, Thea offered a soft smile, reaching a hand out to take her sister's.
"Of course, I will," she affirmed, giving her sister's hand a squeeze, "Just as I always have. Only, this time, with less travel time." After all, crossing the corridors was far less of a walk than crossing the Upper Levels.
Leading her sister to the door, she smiled softly, dampening it only slightly.
"I agree. I suppose that will leave plenty for us to catch him up on when the returns." After all, the thought of him not returning was not even an option worth voicing, not in present company.
"Wouldn't want that, now would we?" Thea teased in sly tone, knowing the tempers that seemed to accompany all but one of the Kotas bloodline - their own precious Dion. Thank the gods he retained the Thanasi demeanor. "I shall visit you...but I am certain that you will not be my only visitor today."
With that, she guided her sister to the door, placing a quick kiss on her cheek before bidding farewell.
