Nikolias was worried about Gavriil today more than he was about his own problems. In fact, in their own way, maybe Gavriil's problems were larger, or could become larger more quickly. He wrinkled his brow in thought. If the rumors were true, they might even affect political outcomes.
He wouldn't put it past the Leventis to try everything they could think of to do just that. Lady Evangelina of Leventi might be a sweet-faced young lady, but anything Leventi spelled trouble to Nikolias. Period. It was bad enough that Gavriil was head of house. It might possibly be considered an enviable position to some if not most to be the wife of a head.
But to possibly try to influence someone's vote based on whom they may or may not marry... well that was just genius, much as Nikolias hated to admit it. He hoped Gavriil would be smarter than to fall for such a trap, but he had heard of pretty women causing men to do things they normally wouldn't. Yes, the god Eros seemed to control many a man's thoughts through a woman.... Nikolias could imagine that the god was laughing his head off right now, with Gavriil as the butt of the joke. As he made his way to Kalopsiti Dimitrou, he was aware that he might seem angry. But although his eyes did smolder, it was due to House Leventi. He hoped Gavriil would be the one who got the last laugh, but Nikolias, on top of everything else, wondered if Gavriil might possibly be in love. His wife had been dead for fourteen years now. As he approached the door, he fought the urge to determinedly march in. Perhaps it was nothing- only rumors.
Instead, he waited until someone could announce him, even though his uncharacteristic anger nearly made him ignore protocol.

Sunlight blazed across the sky in a brilliant display of dying fire. The last meal of the day was cleared from the table and his daughters had dispersed, each to their own amusements for the evening before the coming night made reading by candlelight necessary. For his part, Gavriil lounged in a deep chair in his study. His bare feet stretched out before him and he leaned heavily against one arm of the chair, his eyes on a rather dull report about the breeding stock of the Dimitrou lands. If it was not this paper in his hand, he might have easily had another even less thrilling one. There were plenty to choose from: the comings and goings of ships from the few ports, what cargo was brought in, what was exported, how much of all. The most thrilling thing that he’d been able to read was a letter asking his presence to try a man accused of murdering his neighbor over a cow squabble. Hardly anything riveting and Gavriil did not find criminal proceedings as vastly entertaining as other people seemed to do. They were tedious and often had unhappy outcomes to more than the accused.
Barely had his servant announced Nikolias’s presence than the man was in the door. Gavriil glanced up from his paper but did nothing more than lift his chin, assessing Nikolias where he stood before him. The agitation etched in the other’s craggy features, the intensity about the shoulders, the embers glowing in the Condos lord’s eyes were so far out of character, that Gavriil did not mind the oddity of the hour, nor the abruptness of the visit.
“Nikolias,” he greeted in his calm, gravel timber with perfect unconcern. Sweeping his free hand to the seat opposite him, he wordlessly offered his old friend the chair. Gavriil’s attention dropped back to the letter in his hand, mostly to give Nikolias time to compose himself. Whatever had the other so flustered, Gavriil would rather have heard the man out when he was rational. Therefore, he waited for a while until NIkolias seemed a little better, and then lowered the letter into his lap. Still leaning on the chair’s arm, giving himself every appearance of a large bear lounging against a rock, at his ease, Gavriil clasped his hands and trained his steady blue gaze on his visitor.
His attention would be enough to get the other speaking, he was sure, and so he said nothing to prompt conversation. There was every reason to believe a fount of words would flow forth and Gavriil was ready to hear him out. Though his mind was jumping to situations that could have brought the Condos lord away from his own hearth to sit before the merry, crackling fire the Dimitrou lord had going in the grate. None of the things Gavriil could think of gave him much pause. A town crier would have been sent out if there was some horrendous news and both his children were at home. There was no way that Nikolias would have heard anything from Iason before Gavriil did and since there was no catastrophe, Gavriil could only assume this had something to do with court intrigue, which was even more dull than the horse breeding papers he’d just been perusing.

Nikolias did not waste any time, though standing near the fire felt good. "I've come about some rumors- or at least that's what I pray they are, Lord Gavriil. About you and a certain Leventi young lady?" There wouldn't be need to say whom, if Gavriil really had any idea what Nikolias was talking about.
" Without saying more than I should have to- I would hope such tidings are false. Or if they are true, I would at least hope you know what you are doing, and why. Because as it is, the Leventis look down their noses at everyone else- but more importantly, they may be trying to trap you politically by engineering a match between you and Lady Evangelina. If there are any better ways to win votes, other than threatening someone's life, that is, I am yet to see them. I wouldn't trust any Leventi further than you feel you can throw them, if you get my meaning." This was not just Nikolias' warning as someone who did not trust the Leventis- it was also his warning as Gavriil's friend.
"Unless you've already thought of that- the possibility of political entrapment because of the rumored nature of your relationship, that is. And maybe you have." In fact, Nikolias did hope Gavriil had considered that. "Unless, perhaps, you have the thought that your possibly marrying her might trick theminto voting for you," he suggested, wondering if Gavriil might have political plans of his own.
That would have perhaps been equally brilliant.
"And if you haven'tconsidered either possibility, well then, there they are. I'm just telling you this as a concerned friend." He said nothing of his rivalry with the Leventis, which made it unlikely if not impossible that he would ever vote to put one of them in any position whatsoever.

Gavriil did not have to wonder at his friend’s purpose for long. Nikolias appeared to be gathering his thoughts within himself. His face always took on the sort of expression Gavriil thought of as earnest, and then words tumbled out of the Condos lord’s mouth. They were not rushed, but they were firm and all Gavriil did while Nikolias spoke was to curl one hand into a loose fist and keep his attention steadily on his friend.
“I've come about some rumors- or at least that's what I pray they are, Lord Gavriil. About you and a certain Leventi young lady?”
Nikolias was right. There was no need to say who. Though, Gavriil did wonder how the rumors had started to circulate but he came to that conclusion fairly easily on his own. Achilleas’s wedding. Apparently Irakles’s shocking, untimely (or timely, depending on how one felt about it) death had worn off and people’s minds turned ever further for gossip. That and hadn’t she and Gavriil walked through the city late in the evening together? She’d been wearing his clothes and he’d worn nothing but a basket with a yowling cat in it. Nothing romantic but definitely delightful for itchy, gossipy ears. Then, of course, he’d been seen riding with her several times.
Gavriil had not been careful, but he’d never set out to be. His business was his own and if Nikolias was not here, inserting himself into it by administering obviously well thought out caution, Gavriil would never have told him about it. Sitting quietly as Nikolias laid out his case, Gavriil’s only motion came from his shifting his elbow to brace against the arm of the chair, resting his chin against his thumb while two fingers pressed his cheek. His eyes never left Nikolias as the other stood before the merrily crackling fireplace. It cast a brilliant glow behind Nikolias so that half of him was lit and half was in shadow.
His eyebrows raised slowly as Nikolias pointed out that Evangelina could be used against him as a political weapon. That expression conveyed Gavriil’s complete attitude of I’d like to see them try. It was hard to twist the arm of a man who did not care about the political games.
“And if you haven't considered either possibility, well then, there they are. I'm just telling you this as a concerned friend.” Nikolias finished.
Gavriil drew in a long breath and let it out slowly. Dropping his arm, he looked up at Nikolias and offered a single shrug of his shoulders and a wry smile. “I’ve already proposed to her. It is done.”

Gavriil drew in a long breath and let it out slowly. Dropping his arm, he looked up at Nikolias and offered a single shrug of his shoulders and a wry smile. “I’ve already proposed to her. It is done.”
A knock on the Dimitrou door announced yet another arrival to Gavriil’s home, it was a most spontaneous visit. She’d sent no note and had not made any sort of arrangements with him but she’d managed to slip away from her familial duties for a few hours and thought she might lead her new betrothed astray for a bit of afternoon fun. Evangelina had felt the shift of things between them… had felt the shift in things in her. Maybe when this had all started, she’d expected him to be an answer to her problems or the best of a worst possible situation. The butterflies in her chest fluttered and she bit her lip fighting the big smile that she couldn’t seem to keep from doing every time she thought about him. She was quite certain her family believed she’d absolutely lost her mind.
The was opened and she was let in, quietly she waved the staff off telling them that she hoped to surprise Lord Gavriil. ‘He’s in his study, my lady, but…’ The servant’s words were cut off with another dismissal of her hand, “Oh, I’ll see myself there….thank you.” Too giddy to let him finish she half bounced, half walked down the hallway to the door to his study. Her hand on the doorknob paused at the sound of voices.
It wasn’t Gavriil’s she’d heard first but… Lord Nikolias of Condos. What was Niko’s father doing here? She didn’t mean to eavesdrop. No, she’d meant to barge right on inside but the name Leventi caught her attention driving her to a halt. She blinked, this couldn’t be happening. Was Lord Nikolias defaming her? Was he telling Gavriil about her once believing she’d been in love with his son? How his son led her on a merry chase? She swallowed, her hand falling from the doorknob. Fear deflating her joviality.
‘Without saying more than I should have to- I would hope such tidings are false. I wouldn't trust any Leventi further than you feel you can throw them, if you get my meaning.’
She stiffened at the Condo’s words. The man seemed to have a very set opinion of her, one that she wasn’t sure what she’d ever done to incur. He continued.
‘Unless you've already thought of that- the possibility of political entrapment because of the rumored nature of your relationship, that is. And maybe you have.’ Her brown eyes rolled, ‘Unless, perhaps, you have the thought that your possibly marrying her might trick them into voting for you, and if you haven't considered either possibility, well then, there they are. I'm just telling you this as a concerned friend.’ Pressing her lips together, she counted slowly taking a deep breath. Who needed enemies around when you had friends like him?
Her hand raised back up to the doorknob but she waited just a moment to see what her betrothed would say to this. Would he defend her? Would he tell the man to mind his own business? Would he agree? That last thought left her a little numb.
‘I’ve already proposed to her. It is done.’
Gavriil had spoken. It wasn’t in her defense. It wasn’t to tell the Condos to mind his own business. And somehow, it wasn’t an agreement to what his friend had said. It was middle of the road on all accounts. It might have been easy to throw her hands up and just walk away and maybe that’s what she would have done before things had progressed but right now, right in this moment she wanted to settle a few things before she walked herself outside and then took herself on a very, very long ride… probably alone.
She knocked twice at the same time she opened it and stuck her head in. Her gaze pinpointed on Gavriil for half a moment, silently letting him know she’d heard quite enough before she looked to Lord Nikolias and offered a tight smile before she pulled her gaze away from him to glance at Gavriil again.
“I am sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt. I had a few moments this afternoon and thought I might steal you away for a ride but I see that you are otherwise busy…” Straightening her small body, she put her hands on her hips and looked slowly up and down Lord Nikolias before she cleared her throat, “Is it my family or just me that you have objections to, my lord? If the first, shall we judge you by your son’s behaviors? And if the second, I would very much like to know what I’ve ever done to you to think of me as such a scheming little pawn of my uncle.”

A rush of air was all the warning either of them had before the door opened to the sound of abrupt knocking. To his lack of utter astonishment, the very topic of their conversation was staring at the two of them eyes blazing. The tight smile that accompanied it told him her entire opinion on this conversation and that he would most definitely be hearing about this the second Nikolias was elsewhere. Up to now, Gavriil had lived for quite a few years without having to answer to anyone at all about anything at all, save for his king. Things would be changing, he realized but had the good sense not to smile at her. If she knew he wasn’t afraid, then that would be worse.
“I am sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt. I had a few moments this afternoon and thought I might steal you away for a ride but I see that you are otherwise busy…” she said in a tone that sounded distinctly like a threat. It was when she affixed her fists against her hips that Gavriil actually did shift in his seat to stand up straighter. Whether that was to save Nikolias or to restrain Evie remained to be seen.
“Is it my family or just me that you have objections to, my lord?” she asked scathingly. Gavriil didn’t interrupt her, because he was curious to see her in action. She’d warned him multiple times that she was not to be trusted to keep her tongue properly bridled. Yet here, she had a bit of a point. So far as Gavriil knew, Evangelina did not have a sullied reputation, nor one of great cunning or sly behavior. However, dressing down a head of house was daring and Nikolias would be within his rights to demand apology.
”If the first, shall we judge you by your son’s behaviors?” Gavriil wisely put his fist against his lips to hide his expression as she spoke. ”And if the second, I would very much like to know what I’ve ever done to you to think of me as such a scheming little pawn of my uncle.”
His eyes traveled between his intended and his friend, wondering how Nikolias would bear the onslaught. However, he didn’t actually interfere. That would come later. Right now, he wanted to see how she fared on her own. However, If Lord Condos did need rescuing, Gavriil would step in. But Nikolias was old enough that Gavriil was fairly sure he could handle Evangelina. After all, the man was married to Olivia. He should be used to it.

Nikolias was visibly shocked to see Evangelina show up almost the instant the words of warning had left his mouth, but he kept his voice firm enough in response that hopefully his shock was not betrayed by anything other than the widening of his eyes.
In truth, it wasn't the girl he had anything against, and in fact, he felt a little sorry for her even now that Nikos had treated her the way he had. Still, it was not exactly easy for him to articulate just what the problem he had with her family was, because he had not really meant to cause any offense when he had come here; he had only hoped his words might encourage Gavriil to think as carefully as possible. And the fact that he had not meant to cause offense somehow made not causing it seem that much more important- and impossible.
"Your uncle can seem to be rather intimidating, my lady. I would not put it past him to be capable of intimidating even yourself. And given some of my own family's troubles with yours in the past, I did wonder whether some members of your family might be after more power than is rightfully theirs."
Because truthfully, could Nikolias think of a single person who didn't at least desire more power- politically or otherwise- whether or not they actually went as far as they could to obtain it? In that sense, he could identify with Nikos' wanting the crown. Nobody was immune to wishing for more than they had. Even- and perhaps most especially- those who had the most, wondering how much they could still gain.
"Perhaps I have overstepped my boundaries- but in truth, what good friend would not risk it?"
This last question he posed to Gavriil.

This last question he posed to Gavriil.
She’d liked this room from the first time she’d been in his home. It wasn’t one of those overly large rooms where the amount of space seemed to engulf you. Instead, there was a homey warmth to the room. The windows and hearth opened it up but kept you feeling at peace with the world on the outside. That’s how she’d come to feel about the room but at that very moment she wasn’t quite ready to make peace.
It was insulting enough to walk into a situation only to find that you were being talked about. It was much worse walking into a situation to find out that you were being examined, underestimated, and found entirely lacking for whatever reason. The surprise of her appearance seemed to throw off the conversation and she’d half expected to see Gavriil step in and quietly manage this situation. It’s what her father would have done. Fotios would have too, probably more quietly and with greater finesse but still… they would have stepped in and managed the situation.
At that precise moment though, Evangelina intended fully to be heard and not simply managed. The Condos’ Lord’s eyes had widened and he very much looked guilty. She darted another quickly frown at Gavriil, had he intended to stand up for her at any point? Or were the two of them just standing in here laughing at her? Oh, what a little fool she’d been!
‘Your uncle can seem to be rather intimidating, my lady. I would not put it past him to be capable of intimidating even yourself. And given some of my own family's troubles with yours in the past, I did wonder whether some members of your family might be after more power than is rightfully theirs.’
Clenching her jaw, she pulled her hard gaze back to Lord Nikolias. Was that his idea of an appropriate answer to her questions? It sounded weak. Taking her time to answer him, using her moment of silence in the room to size him up, she blinked at him. Really? That's the answer you want to go with. Had she been the sort to run along and tell her uncle what was being said about him she was sure he’d have laughed. The head of the great family Condos was scared of her uncle. She might have laughed too if she’d not been so angry. Single-handedly he admitted to finding her uncle intimidating and that the root of all of this was his fear of how this would affect him. She straightened a little and crossed her arms in front of her chest as she raised an eyebrow at him, looking at him squarely now.
“Intimidating?” The question spilled from her curled lip. The man obviously had never seen her mother and this… intimidating Leventi Lord tear into one another. Even she’d had her own confrontations with her uncle over the years. When you were raised by a pack of wolves you didn’t become too concerned about being bit by a dog. Evangelina stepped further into the room towards Nikolias, her voice dripping into dangerously sweet tones, “How so?”
Was Lord Nikolias really in a position to discuss family members wanting more power than was rightfully theirs? She knew well enough about the various trade wars between her family and his. She knew about the fact his daughter still wasn’t married and that her family had snagged not one, but two Mikelidas’, meaning not one but two Leventi women had recently sat on the throne. Somehow, she’d managed the art of simultaneously looking up at someone while looking down her nose.
“I’m failing to see the connection of your family’s troubles with mine and how they affect Lord Gavriil.” The Condos Lord had dug himself a hole and she wasn’t quite through with letting him just walk away, even if that would be the polite thing to do. But the man was insufferable, did he really believe that he was the only one of the three who was capable of knowing what was best for all of them? So, Evangelina handed him a bit more rope to hang himself… she had not expected it to be this easy. “Unless of course you are saying you believe that he is susceptible to the whims of his… impressionable… new bride.” Her lips curled again into a smile with a bite, “In which case, I find that a rather terrible assumption to make of your friend.”
Stepping past him to the small table that held some wine. Without asking or offering, the pint sized Leventi started to pour one of three intended glasses, “Here I thought you were a man, Lord Nikolias, turns out you’re really just an ass.”

"Lord Fotios... well as they say, he can certainly make someone want to do something. Sometimes it can seem as if what you did was your own idea when it is really his. I would only hope he didn't threaten you, my lady. Gods know you've likely been through enough." He couldn't resist one of his most sympathetic smiles, meaning it despite the words that might seem to be scathing.
"Don't think I didn't notice how you were around my son. I'm sorry for the way he treated you. If nothing else, please believe that. That boy..." He sighed in frustration. He could not quite seem to see Nikos as a man, in this instance. It might be one thing to cheat on one's spouse, if done discreetly, but to behave in such a manner when one was not even married...well, after a while it might cast a bad light on the family name. He could just imagine the comments made to the generations of Condos men there might be in the future. 'Those Condos men are rakes, and they don't fulfill their duty to society very well, either.' While Nikolias, as a young man, might have liked a chance to experience true love for himself- though he did have an affectionate friendship with Olivia- he was suddenly somewhat glad he'd never had the opportunity, self-made or otherwise. Love was heady, and he had no doubt it could be sweet, but more than one woman inside your head could always mean trouble.
But back to Nikos, if only for a moment. That just made the whole situation even more...well, awkward didn't even begin to cover it. "Perhaps you will understand that to see my good friend with a woman my son was with might be something of a social embarrassment." And from there he turned from her for a moment to face Gavriil. "There could be rumors, you know, of a feud between us of some sort, which you won. You and I know differently, but because it is possible that others knew of Nikos and Lady Evangelina, perhaps you can see how it would look."
He did not want to lose Gavriil's friendship, but this might indeed complicate things.

Poor Nikolias. Gavriil’s gaze softened somewhat as the other man’s eyes widened at the realization that Evangelina had heard everything. Attention traveling between his intended and his friend, Gavriil didn’t actually offer a defense for either person. They did not need it. Evangelina was quite capable for speaking up for herself and even though he felt Nikolias’s intentions were good, he wasn’t going to protect a grown man from having his ear chewed off by a Leventi girl. Gavriil was quite sure that Nikolias had to be used to the female temperament by now, if Olivia was anything to go by.
“Perhaps I have overstepped my boundaries- but in truth, what good friend would not risk it?” Nikolias threw a beseeching plea his way. While Gavriil could have and would have given Nikolias a pass, simply listened to what he had to say and then let the matter rest there, with Evangelina in the room, that was no longer an option. Her fear about being ridiculed, at least on Gavriil’s end, was unjustified. His opinion of her remained unchanged no matter how passionate Nikolias had been, but she didn’t see it that way. She came further into the room, a lioness’s glint in her eye, and Gavriil realized then and there that Nikolias was in trouble.
His decision that he didn’t have to rescue a grown man was quickly reversed as Evangelina easily cornered the poor lord in such sharp tongue lashes that Gavriil was a little surprised Nikolias wasn’t bleeding. Gavriil could no longer remain in his chair. Specifically after Evangelina called Nikolias an ass in such dulcet, whimsical tones. However, once he was on his feet, Evangelina moved past him and towards the table, pouring herself a glass of wine. He eyed her, deciding that here and now wasn’t the time he wanted for the conversation they most certainly would be having. However, she wasn’t exactly wrong and he wasn’t going to rescue Nikolias, either, who did appear to have a terribly low opinion of Gavriil’s own morals and steadfast disposition. He wasn’t sure what he’d done to gain that kind of reputation but he was a little miffed that Nikolias thought so little of him.
Especially where court intrigue was concerned - a thing they both knew he didn’t concern himself with most of the time. He had better things to think about than the machinations of small minded people.
He was about to tell the two of them to sit down and relax, but at that moment, Nikolias plunged ever onward, probably with the intention of making it all better.
“Lord Fotios... well as they say, he can certainly make someone want to do something. Sometimes it can seem as if what you did was your own idea when it is really his. I would only hope he didn't threaten you, my lady. Gods know you've likely been through enough.”
“I can handle Fotios,” Gavriil offered dryly but neither seemed to be listening to him at the moment. It was just as well. Dorotheos stuck his head in the room, mouthed ‘sorry’ but motioned Gavriil forward in any case. The Dimitrou lord made his excuses but they were low and he moved between Evangelina and Nikolias as he followed his brother out of the room. One of the servants had fainted in the kitchen, as it turned out, and while the brothers consulted with each other on something a little more pressing than whether Evangelina was evil incarnate or sent by the gods.
He did, however, not stay away long and came into the room in time to have Nikolias turn to him and say, “There could be rumors, you know, of a feud between us of some sort, which you won. You and I know differently-”
“Yes, we do know differently,” Gavriil cut through the rest of his words, not hearing exactly what it was that Nikolias was trying to get across about Nikos and not really caring. That was yet another person that Gavriil didn’t feel like discussing. “Nikolias, today is too beautiful to waste arguing between the three of us. I have heard you,” he promised. “My choice seems sudden, perhaps, but it is made and I am happy. Be happy for me. It is all I require of you as a friend.” He was walking the other man to the door now, highly interested to part Nikolias from Evangelina, fairly certain that his friend was going to be the one on the raw end of that mauling.

She continued the slow deliberate act of taking the top off the pitcher of wine, pouring it into the glass, and then putting the stopper back in as Lord Nikolias continued talking about her uncle. Gods! Fotios would be amused to hear just how scared he had the Condos head of the house. She almost reveled in that amusement. Here he was talking to her about her uncle, as if she didn’t know, about the ways he could bend and break you, wielding you as well as any soldier could a sword. Lifting the glass to her lips she slowly turned a little so she could focus her penetrating gaze on the Condos lord.
‘Lord Fotios… well as they say, he can certainly make someone want to do something. Sometimes it can seem as if what you did was your own idea when it is really his. I would only hope he didn’t threaten you, my lady. Gods know you’ve been through enough.’
The wine in her mouth trickled down her tight throat. He was showing a lot to talk to her about the things he thought she’d been through. Looking down into her glass of wine was the only formidable way for her rein in her temper. It was a bold accusation on his part, insolent even.
“Oh, I think you’ll find that I do not take to being threatened well, my lord.” Her voice held a quiet sort of grit as she raised her dark gaze a moment to focus on him. She didn’t have time to say more before Gavriil’s flinty voice broke the silence offering a simple solution dryly, ‘I can handle Fotios.’
Her gaze shifted momentarily to the doorway that called Gavriil away for a moment but as soon as she heard the sigh of frustration and the words that Lord Nikolias was saying, her head snapped back around to him. Of all the things to discuss. This was what he’d chosen? Her fingers tightened on the stem of her glass as her gaze bore into him.
‘Don’t think I didn’t notice how you were around my son. I’m sorry for the way he treated you. If nothing else please believe that. That boy...’
Her breath stilled in her chest, equal parts fury and indignation filled her. How dare he stand here in his friend’s house, her betrothed’s house and mention something like that?! Her spine straightened and she felt her body shifting closer to the man that at that moment her fingers itched to dig into the skin of his face.
‘Perhaps you will understand that to see my good friend with a woman my son was with might be something of a social embarrassment.’ She could feel the tongue lashes of anger flickering across her skin, her nostrils flared. Without thinking whether or not Gavriil heard her, “Let me make something very clear to you.” Her body shifted closer to Lord Nikolias as she stepped quite uncomfortably into his space as she glared up at him, “Your fucking son never had me…” Each word she could feel her teeth gnashing on and the control starting to slip from her hands. He was toting such a very fine line line with her at that moment.
He looked towards Gavriil speaking again, ‘There could be rumors, you know, of a feud between us of some sort, which you won. You and I know differently, but because it is possible that the other knew of Nikos and Lady Evangelina, perhaps you can see how it would look.’ There was a small, shaking tremble in her body not from fear but of the internal brimming anger that was boiling in her from Lord Nikolias’ taunting words. He wanted to believe he knew everything and yet what he knew of her he could fill with a thimble.
As if sensing how close she was to pulling his friend apart limb from lip, Gavril was intervening. ‘Yes, we do know differently.’ His words cutting through it, quick and deliberate to shut Nikolias up. ‘Nikolias, today is too beautiful to waste arguing between the three of us. I have heard you…’ Evangelina forced herself to step away and turned to stare out the window, sipping her glass of wine and hoping the shakes would stop. ‘My choice seems sudden, perhaps, but it is made and I am happy. Be happy for me. It is all I require of you as a friend.’
She could hear him shuffling the Condos towards the door and safely away from her. Smart man, but that’s why I am marrying him...

She could hear him shuffling the Condos towards the door and safely away from her. Smart man, but that’s why I am marrying him...
Perhaps it was enough to be happy for his friend. Or at least, it probably should have been. He knew Gavriil had been alone a long time, so it was just possible that if he was getting married again after this long, there might be a spark of some kind between Gavriil and Evangelina. That being said, he was both a little curious to know whether or not such things as 'sparks' or 'love' lasted, and still a little stunned from the awkward confrontation with Evangelina.
Just as he thought that last part, she positively did what felt to him like seething from tense, probably gritted teeth.
'Your fucking son never had me.'
Nikolias' eyes nearly popped out of his head. Now just what was thatsupposed to mean? That Nikos hadn't slept with her, or that she had not let her heart, at least, be claimed where he was concerned?
Either way, perhaps it was a good thing. There was no further need to upset any more Leventis than necessary. He really did like Lady Evangelina, as far as Leventis went. And as for Gavriil saying he could handle Fotios, well, Nikolias had to admit that if any man could it would probably be him.
"For what it's worth, I am glad for both of you, and it is good to know that my concerns are now rendered meaningless."
It was mostly true, though he did wonder what Nikos would think of the whole thing in the end, even if what Evangelina had said might be true.
This, however, he did not say, and he merely bid them both a good day as he was guided toward the door.

It was a bit like kicking a puppy, Gavriil reflected, as he stood in his front doorway, watching Nikolias’s back as the man moved across the courtyard towards the gate. Shaking his head, he closed the door and went back to where Evangelina was no doubt still frothing at the mouth. He’d not been present for the real part of the conversation that had bothered her, but he’d seen the effects well enough. There was nothing Gavriil wanted so much as to distract her. Not given to intense displays of emotion himself, under general circumstances, he definitely wanted to bring hers down a notch or two so that she would be a bit more comfortable for the afternoon. If left in the state she was now, he was half convinced that a herald would be running through Vasiliadon tomorrow crying out the murder of Nikolias of Condos. Being that this should be avoided for several reasons, Gavriil returned to the room and leaned on the doorway.
He might have wrly said ‘that went badly’ or some other incredibly observant remark but he merely watched her steadily, assessing her mood. There was only one thing he could think of that might get her calmed down and also make himself happy in the process. It was what he did whenever he could possibly get away with it; be out of doors. They’d met on horseback several times. He didn’t have to guess that this was one of her favorite things to do.
“Ride with me,” he said and then stepped out of the doorway, giving it a solid pat as though to close the conversation, and disappeared down the hallway. The rest of the afternoon would see them following after each other, his blood mare, her own gray gelding, passing through an ocean of sunlight. They rode through fields of waist high, swishing grasses beneath an endless sky of summer blue. Red flowers dotted the fields here and there. In places like that, where they were hedged in on their far side by city and by forest on the other, with ocean at their backs and nothing but rolling hills to the front, it was easy to forget the troubles of the afternoon. The glorious present was what mattered. The wind in their hair, the birds wheeling in black shadows overhead, and the simple presence of each other’s company. This was why he was marrying her. She didn’t detract from places and times like these. She only enhanced them. She was fast becoming his person.
