Maeri could hardly wait to get home. First, they had traveled to the council meeting, then to Damascus to visit Amiti’s family and finalize the agreement that she should be married to Amiti. Now they were finally on the way back home to Judah and once they were there, she was going to get formally engaged to Amiti. Maeri couldn’t wait. This was only what she’d be waiting for for her entire life. She was going to be a wife and a mother and finally, she would be an adult and be able to be taken seriously out there in the world. It was so exciting that she just couldn’t stand it.
Of course, there was still so much to be planned. It was her first time really properly planning an event. Her aunt and sisters had gone back to arrange some of it before she got there, but this was something that she was going to have to do to show that she was capable of being a good wife. There was so much to think about with having to host Amiti and his whole family. Luckily, she was going to have some help with the situation. Amarissa’s family had allowed her to travel back with Maeri to help prepare for the engagement. So Maeri was going to have her friend’s help in all of this.
Maeri and her mother had only brought a donkey for each of them to Damascus, so Amarissa had had to share with Maeri for the trip back to Damascus. It was so nice to have someone to share things with like that, and Maeri was having a very enjoyable journey back home. Amarissa had been riding in front of Maeri on the donkey that day, with Maeri holding on around Amarissa’s waist. It wasn’t entirely necessary as the donkeys were just walking along at a fairly sedate pace, but Maeri definitely felt more secure that way. Also, she was going to have to ask Amarissa what she used in her hair. It smelled very nice, kind of like flowers and spices.
Of course, the thought of spices made her wonder what she needed to cook for her guests for the engagement party. “Do you think the guests will expect a full meal, or just snacks?” Maeri asked Amarissa out of the blue. “For the engagement I mean,” Maeri added hastily. She realized she hadn’t given any context at all for Amarissa. “I was thinking maybe I could make some bread with raisins in it, but I don’t know if that makes sense if we’re having something more substantial. Like, would it go with roast chicken?” Maeri was sure that Amarissa would be able to sort something out. She always seemed like she had such good ideas for things like this.
