Nikolias had felt violently ill the last couple of weeks, and hadn't known much of what was going on. He did know, however, that there had been some kind of a meeting that Irakles had facilitated. What had it been about? He'd have to ask Nikos soon, today if possible. Meanwhile, he certainly hoped Irakles hadn't been taken down with whatever Nikolias had been suffering from. Mysterious illnesses were a nuisance, particularly when there was so much going on in one's life and in the kingdom at large.
Then again, he supposed it must be inevitable to some degree that people would get sick. Stress seemed to beget illness, which of course always seemed to beget more stress. And right now, stress seemed to follow Taengea the way a hunting dog followed its quarry.
Determinedly.
Well, no use wishing for different political circumstances. Nikolias was sure that better men than himself had tried that many a time. It did seem, though, that having to be in court at this time increased his stress more than anything else ever had previously. His cough was still pronounced, but his sore throat seemed to have gone away, and the fever had abated, too, though he was still often napping in the afternoon.
When he could find a moment where he felt awake enough to discuss such things, he called for his son and gathered a quill and a sheet of vellum to take notes on. The meeting must have been important, he knew, and Nikolias was sorry that he'd had to miss it. He had heard by now of the escape of Stephanos and Olympia, but he didn't know any more than that.
"So," he began, sitting forward on the reclining couch and preparing to take notes. "This meeting with Irakles, what was it about? I had heard that the queen and king had...gone elsewhere, and that some sort of document was signed, but I'm afraid I was ill enough at the time not to remember any more details than those."

Nikos had been worried these past weeks for his father's ill health. He'd visitedbthe temples as often as he could, making offerings and praying for the gods to help his father come through this sickness. The elder Condos had been down and bed ridden for too long. While Nik felt certain he could step into the role as Head of House Condos just fine, he was not reasy to lose the father he loved and idolized.
Nikos had been woken that morning with news that his father was awake and had summoned him. The young Condos wasted no time, dressing in Condos blue that happened to match his eyes and understanded jewels, and rushing to the Condos estate in the capitol. He'd been greeted by his father's servants and escorted to the study where he found Nikolias on the reclining couch, paper and ink close by. "Father, I am most pleased to see you up and about. I hope this means your health is on the mend?" Nikos gave a warm smile and a small bow in respect to the elder man, before moving further into the room. He took a seat in an over stuffed chair across from Nikolias.
As per usual, however, his father didnt seem to wish to waste time in pleasantries for the elder leaned foward, poised to jot down what news Nikos offered. Yes. The meeting with the heads of the royal houses. Of course his father would want to know what the meeting was about . As Head of House Condos he should know - needed to know. A lot had transpired over the last few days for the kingdom of Taengea, but as hagard and weary as his father father's still appeared, Nik worried that the news would set his health back again.
The younger Condos man sat up straighter, nodding at his fathers inquiry. "It's true. It appears the King and Queen have fled from Taengea. Irakles called the meeting to determine the best course of action with the throne left vacant. Two options were presented. Neither an ideal course to take, but something had to be done. Taengea could not be left without a king. A king who is here and present." Nikos used the words he'd spoken at the meeting to emphasize to his father the importance of what had transpired. In these next moments, Nikos was careful to keep his visage as serious as he could. He knew his father feelings towards Nik's ambitions for the throne. He could not let on that this turn of events satisfied him in more ways than one. "We all agreed - I, on behalf of yourself, Father - that the situation must be rectified. I am afraid, Stephanos has been declared guilty of treason and removed from the line of succession. Irakles is now King of Taengea." Nikos did not move, he held his breath as he watched and waited for his father's response to the news.

Nikolias nodded and smiled at his son. Despite their disagreement over whether or not Nikos should have designs on the throne, he did love his son very much, and they were close. He was just worried sometimes that his only heir would quite literally lose his head, which could lead to anger and frustration on his part more often than not. "I am much better- still tired in the afternoons, but generally well." He appreciated Nikos' concern for him more than he could say, especially given that more often than not there seemed to be few enough people who would care either way.
He smiled his approval. "Good, then it is presumably as I had hoped." Whatever other conclusion father and son might come to, there was little doubt in Nikolias' mind that having Irakles on the throne would be good for the country as well as- potentially- for any of his supporters.
"Quite honestly, I think it will be better for everyone involved, as well as for the country. Sometimes, experience can be necessary- just remember that." Nikolias prayed that Nikos would indeed remember that if by some miracle something did happen to put them closer to the throne. It was yet another reason he worried about Nikos, who had his own indiscretions, and he was well aware that some people would likely think Nikos was just as bad as Stephanos when it came to women. Perhaps having Stephanos disappear for the time being would mean one less influence on Nikos in that way. Indiscretions- kept secret- could be viewed as permissible for anyone. Letting them outshine one's other achievements, however, spelled trouble more often than not, and could damage trust as it presumably had with the people and Stephanos.
"Let us hope there will be no more quick coronations necessary. I sometimes wonder if the whole of Taengea is not as mentally exhausted as I have been physically."

Nikos gave a curt nod and breathed a little easier at this. Of course, given previous meetings with Irakles, Nik had suspected that this was where his father’s wishes lay. That this was the outcome the older Condos lord had desired to see take place. But father and son had not really discussed the issue so directly. So it was a relief for Nikos to have confirmation of his assumptions.
’Quite honestly, I think it will be better for everyone involved, as well as for the country. Sometimes, experience can be necessary- just remember that.
A tic started in Nik’s jaw as he ground his back teeth together, to bite his tongue against blurting out a retort that would surely strain things even further between father and son. ”Of course, Father.” Nikolias had always seen Nikos was too immature, too brash, too temperamental. Too eager for more power, and higher station. King Irakles had taken a liking to Nikos, seemed to appreciate the young Condos lord’s ambitious side. Why couldn’t his own father praise him as Irakles had?
’Let us hope there will be no more quick coronations necessary. I sometimes wonder if the whole of Taengea is not as mentally exhausted as I have been physically.’
Nikos leaned back in his seat, elbows on the arm of the chair, his left hand coming up to rub at his chin absently as if dealing with a troublesome itch. ”I agree that the kingdom may not survive another sudden change in power, my lord. King Zenon had been a good and fair king, and Stephanos was not experienced enough to deal with the affairs of the Crown. But do you honestly believe that Irakles and his branch of the Mikaelidas family is really the right choice for the throne?” As far as Nikos could discern, his father thought of Nik’s ambitions for the crown as purely motivated by greed. But it was more than that. It was more than personal glory at stake here. Nikos of Condos had been more than willing to bide his time whilst Zenon Mikaelidas had held the crown. But things were different now… much different.

If Nikos thought his father deemed him brash and immature, he was most likely right. After all, what better way to show one's immaturity than to attend wild parties and flirt shamelessly- and who knew what else- with what seemed to be a lot of the young women who crossed his path? Sometimes he was tempted to ask Nikos if he had been taking lessons from Stephanos as far as how to be the ultimate ladies' man. As far as him wanting the crown, Nikolias understood his frustration to a degree; he, too. was often tired of their house seemingly taking second place. But it didn't excuse that he thought there might be money involved. Considering his lifelong trouble with deciphering numbers, any topic that involved money made Nikolias nervous- not because he would not have liked more money, but because he questioned at times if those in charge of his money were honest, and not being able to see numbers properly didn't help his skepticism.
For the sake of relative peace, Nikolias did not add the question about whether Nikos had been modeling the former king Stephanos' behavior. But he was sorely tempted to do so.
With that being said, it was time to be at least a tiny bit more honest about something.
"I am reasonably confident," he answered to his son's question. "If nothing else, the man knows how to comport himself, even if he does dare to flaunt his mistress for all to see. And there is another thing. We will be closer to the throne, perhaps, if we ally ourselves to our close cousins. For myself I do not want the throne, but you have desired it for as long as I can remember. And who knows- Irakles' sons may prove not to have their father's capabilities. And while I admit that I sometimes question your motives for wanting the throne- being especially curious if greed is among them- I do not doubt you are capable of ruling well, particularly if you watch Irakles." Nikos could make of that what he would. "Sometimes, however, with respect to your motives, you are incorrect if you think I don't care about you- indeed, I do- almost too much- and I would not like to see you- quite literally- lose your head," he admitted. "But perhaps I should relax more than I have been, regardless of the kingdom's current fragile state."

Nikos was not surprised to hear his father say he was confident in Irakles’ abilities to hold the crown. But the younger Condos lord did raise a brow and sit back in his chair at his father’s suggestion of getting close to their cousins who were now royalty. Well, Achilleas a lost cause. Nikos would never be able to repair that relationship even if he wanted to. He and Achilleas had been at odds with each other for as long as he could remember. He supposed he could try to befriend Emilios, but Achilleas would most assuredly put an end to that before it even began. But Irakles… the man had already taken a liking to Nikos. Perhaps it was time to strengthen that bond. A slow smile lit up his face.
That smile began to fade though as Nikolias continued. In one sentence, his father both insulted his motives but praised his potential to rule this kingdom. Nik lowered his gaze. He had given up long ago trying to explain his reasons for wanting the crown to Nikolias. Had resigned himself to the fact that his father thought him greedy and frankly not good enough for the throne. But now… ”Thank you, Father.” he said quietly in the short pause his father allowed.
He looked back up to meet Nikolias’ gaze. It meant a lot to Nik to hear the man say he cared. And soon that smile was back on his face. ”And I know just the place for relaxing. Forgetting your troubles. I’ll take you. Just as soon as you are fully recovered and back on your feet, Father.” He sat up straighter, humor in his blue eyes, and that charming smile wide on his lips. His father had revealed much of his thoughts and feelings today. Nikolias was right. They were closer to the thrown now. And Nikos would do what he could to take advantage of the opportunities that would bring.

Nikolias smiled, feeling he might be able to have a closer bond with Nikos in some respects now that he had revealed his true thoughts at last. "As soon as I'm on my feet again, properly," he promised. "It should not be more than another week. I can't wait to see what you have in mind." And if it got a little wilder and crazier than he was used to, so be it! Even Nikolias, who supposed he must often seem stiff to others due to a barely veiled dislike of court and all of the political tension lately, realized that it might be time to let loose a little. He liked to- occasionally- but could not necessarily remember the last time he had done so with his son along- or indeed, his son planning most of their excursion.
"Perhaps, if you have the time, a gulp of wine would do us some good? In celebration of your dream perhaps being closer than ever before," he suggested, though he also suspected that he might need the particular wine he was currently thinking of for its dark color- wasn't that supposed to invigorate the blood somehow? He couldn't remember, but thought he might have read it in some medical information of some sort somewhere. And if it was true, maybe the more wine he drank, the faster he could be strengthened enough to go somewhere with his son. Unfortunately, that outing might also mean that he would be well enough to return to court shortly after it, but the blessings the gods gave were often mixed, it seemed. In this case, though, it seemed that there was perhaps far more good mixed in with the bad.

'...I can't wait to see what you have in mind.'
Nikolias was just full of surprises today, wasn't he? Nikos had not expected his father to compliment him as he did, or to seem so eager to go on an outing with him. Perhaps the elder Condos should get sick more often? It appeared to have given him a much more relaxed demeanor. Nikos dismissed that thought though. The last weeks of his father being ill had left him a mess - at least on the inside, for Nikos prided himself on his composure, especially when he was in the public eye. He couldn't allow himself to appear weak to the other lords. Especially now, with the Condos House ever closer to the throne. Instead of voicing all of this, Nikos simply offered a warm smile to his beloved father. Perhaps there was hope for their relationship after all.
At the offer of wine and celebration, Nikos' features brightened even more. "Of course I have the time. I never turn down a good cup of wine, my lord." Nikos stood up out of his seat, heading for the door. He'd left his retainer in the hall to wait for him. Now though he told the man to fetch a tray of wine and a bit of food so that he might enjoy a small meal with his father.
Minutes later, one of the housemaids came in with a tray of wine, cheese, bread, and fruit. Nikos took it on himself to pour the wine and he offered a chalice of the dark red wine to Nikolias, before he resumed his seat as before, sipping at his own goblet. This was a nice change of pace, Nikos thought. He'd always loved his father, looked up to him, was loyal to the man. But he'd always felt as if he wasn't quite what Nikolias had pictured when he had a son. He'd never really felt as if the Condos Head of House was... proud of the man Nikos had become. It appeared now that Nikos had been wrong in that assumption. And it pleased him more than a little...
